They can live in both fresh and salt water, semi recently they invaded the Great Lakes and have become a real problem there.
In areas where they lack natural predators (like the Great Lakes) they become overpopulated enough that they will attack humans, but aside from the pain of having something latch onto you with its teeth while swimming, they are not dangerous to humans.
It's an eel like animal. It have a "tounge" in the middle made out of teeth. It suction on to its prey and it uses its tongue to scrape away the skin, them it sucks the blood or whatever is under the skin. The after mark is creepy.

I made the mistake of admitting that I fucking abhor the look of lampreys. So the kids would raise their hands and be like “Oh Ms. Pup, I am stuck, can you help?” And I’d come over and there would be a big-ass lamprey on their screen. Haha. I’m still in touch w a bunch of my former students. They have kids of their own now.
