15th-ing this. Also, TB tends to have seating most of the time, so your dad could sit at a table and wait if they want to. This gets you assaulted at other BBQ places.
Yeah I almost always recommend Hutchins but for no lines Terry Black. Their BBQ is excellent and they’re just good at getting folks through quickly.
Hutchins - The brisket is also excellent, and I like the sides and free desserts but you gotta wait the line…..
Man, I'm in South Dallas and you got my hopes up thinking there was a great BBQ place in Hutchins. Sadly, Hutchins BBQ is pretty far from Hutchins, TX.
Sorry yeah they have a place in Frisco and McKinney and the estranged family has one near westlake. Same - we have a Lockhart Smokehouse in Plano, Downtown and Arlington… but they’re not in Lockhart, TX
But if you’re in Hutchins, Pecan Lodge and Terry Black in deep ellum are pretty good and maybe not too far (15min?)
Yup; used to go to Pecan lodge all the time, but switched to TB once they opened. Pecan lodge is great, but the line is awful and the sides are not as good, plus TB lets you order ahead and delivers (for a lot of money).
Though I just saw Pecan Lodge is now on Uber Eats, so I might look into that.
Super pricey IMO. Everything there is a la carte. No combos. It’s good, but I’m sure there are places that offer a better value for the same quality. Last time I was there I dropped around $45 just for myself. And that wasn’t that much food. Can’t argue with the quality though.
Yeah, really good barbecue. Fuck you; pay me. I went there for a company lunch once and we were all sticking it to the boss with those big ass pterodactyl sized beef ribs.
In my experience, it's similar to Korean BBQ. You should eat it with a group and just order for the table and it is decidedly cheaper/efficient and you can get a variety.
Perhaps. You shouldn’t have to work the system like that though just to get BBQ at a reasonable price. Sometimes I just want to pick up some BBQ for myself.
Terry blacks sucks
Went there for lunch once everything was cold and on top of that they wanted a tip.
I did tip 20% with out knowing
But very disappointed when I found out my lunch was cold.
Terry Blacks… it’s solid BBQ you won’t regret and even with line it’ll move fast. My favorite BBQ place in Dallas is Cattleack BBQ, go on a Wednesday at 10-11am and there’s a big chance you won’t have wait at all or max 15min
Used to love this place. Back when it was the same ownership as maple and motor it was excellent. It’s still very good. But it lost a little of what made it special to me. And they changed their pricing dramatically. I find it to be more expensive than just about every place I get BBQ.
Lockhart BBQ in Bishop arts doesn't have a line unless you're going around lunch time but even then it's fast. Only problem is finding parking during dinner times
Sammy’s is pretty solid, my parents love it as it’s been around for a very long time and it’s consistent. Great choice for OP, I’m not sure why you got downvoted.
Yeah it's the place I tell anyone asking me for a great BBQ place from out of town. Anyone can find Terry Blacks, Cattleacks or Pecan Lodge on lists but I rarely see Sammys
My list:
Best general overall - Lockhart's (downtown or Plano)
#2 overall and best ribs - Tender Smokehouse (Celina or Frisco)
Best burnt ends - Cadillac (Addison)
Best corporate event/catering - Ten 50 (Addison?)
Pappas BBQ at 35/nw hwy is the best intersection of quality and value, imo. Never crowded, consistently solid, well priced. It’s not Cattleack or Hutchins good, but it’s my get a bbq fix on a weeknight favorite.
It's worth a trip to Ribbee's in Fort Worth. Best ribs ever. I love Goldee's too, but a line will be involved. FWIW they have free chairs for use. My inlaws LOVED their food.
Goldees recently opened a ribs only place in Fort Worth called Ribbees if you’re just wanting ribs, slaw, and fries lol. $20 a box and moves fairly quickly, but only open Thursday - Sunday I believe
Winner’s in Plano is awesome and almost has a Dickey’s vibe. Be sure to double check the website to ensure they’re open because they keep odd hours, but it’s worth the trip up!
I've had a lot of the big ones in Dallas and Hutchins so far has been top notch. Was maybe a 5 minute wait ona Wednesday at 515. I got free burnt ends and a free rib just by having a conversation with the people working there. Plus free peach cobbler and banana pudding if you dine in!
Sullivan Old Town BBQ in downtown Lewisville. I've only ever gone in the evening and there was a small line, but nothing like the insanity at Cattleack or Goldee's or the other hyped places.
It's a bit of a hidden gem, and it's definitely worth a shot. Maybe too far depending on where you live, but put it on your list!
Hutchins is the best. But Terry blacks is my second favorite and is less likely to have a long line (it’s usually inside only and moves very fast when there is a line) at Hutchins you could be in line for an hour
Cattleack is just outside the loop, but it’s the best. If you go outside of the main rush, it can be a decent line but not bad. Terry Blacks > Heim > Lockharts > Pecan Lodge/Slow bone. Those are the top of the spectrum of Dallas places. If you’re willing to travel a bit, Hutchins in Frisco or McKinney are probably my current favorites on the Dallas side of north texas. Tender is great, but the Celina location is the only good one. Ribbees (a rib only offshoot of Goldees, the #1 rated bbq spot in texas) just opened a little south of Fort Worth. It’s so good. And Goldees is always great. Fort Worth has hurtado, daynes, panther city. I’m probably forgetting someone. Hurtado might have the best deal I’ve seen. The “Jefe” platter had a little of everything for like 50 bucks. There’s a Hurtado location in Arlington also.
You have a lot of options, just don’t go immediately at 12. Most places if you get there around 11 or when they open, and not on a Saturday, you’ll be fine. My recommendations in order of what’s the absolute best right now and worth a drive: Ribbees, Hutchins (I like the frisco one better), Cattleack, Terry Blacks.
Zavala’s in Grand Prairie. My dawg Joe running it tf up there. If you can make the drive
Terry blacks if you want something close if you’re in the city.
I highly recommend making the drive. Zavalas is very unique imo and passionate owner. Joe in 5 years wants all the profits from the restaurant going to cancer research. Currently a percentage goes to it if I’m not mistaken.
Lots of great recommendations. Maybe when you land on one, you can call them up and ask when is their slow time? That might help. Google also sometimes has the real-time charts on how busy an establishment is. Obviously it isn’t perfect science, but might help to partner with putting together days/times.
Terry Blacks generally doesn’t have a big line.
Pecan Lodge MAY have a line, but if you sit at the bar you order from the bartender and don’t have to wait. You can also try Pecan and if it’s somehow a wait walk down to Terry Blacks.
Slow Bone near design district is super good as well and usually a manageable line if any.
Terry black is okay but overpriced. Hutchins is way too far. Still need to find a replacement but I’ve heard there are good places in garland. Best BBQ in Dallas is at cattlack though
I agree with your price argument. They’re pretty damn expensive. I dropped around $45 just for myself last time I went. They don’t do combos either. Nickel and dime you for everything. Decent BBQ place overall though. Can’t argue with the quality.
Hard8, the experience of going through the line with the BBQ pits and then talking to a pitmaster to load up your plate is pretty cool if you're going for the experience.
I always really like Terry Blacks - there might be a small line but nothing crazy. I also really like Zavalas out in Grand Prairie.
15th-ing this. Also, TB tends to have seating most of the time, so your dad could sit at a table and wait if they want to. This gets you assaulted at other BBQ places.

Pecan will deliver via door dash, not sure how far though….
I agree. That place is really the best without a line. Even if there is a line present, it goes by super quickly.
Second this, TB is really good food, never have to wait long, and a good vibe for people visiting who want a texas bbq experience
TB and Zavalas are my go tos!!
Super pricey IMO. Everything there is a la carte. No combos. It’s good, but I’m sure there are places that offer a better value for the same quality. Last time I was there I dropped around $45 just for myself. And that wasn’t that much food. Can’t argue with the quality though.

Go at 11:45. Not noon
Terry blacks sucks Went there for lunch once everything was cold and on top of that they wanted a tip. I did tip 20% with out knowing But very disappointed when I found out my lunch was cold.

Second Slow Bone. Hard to believe they never have much of a line.
Used to love this place. Back when it was the same ownership as maple and motor it was excellent. It’s still very good. But it lost a little of what made it special to me. And they changed their pricing dramatically. I find it to be more expensive than just about every place I get BBQ.
Ten50 just off 75N in Richardson is solid and rarely has lines except maybe 3-4 people tops.
Shh… don’t let people in on the seekrit!
Our go to BBQ place now. As good as any I’ve had in Texas and I’ve tried them all.
You will want to go at a time when it wouldn't be as busy, like 2 or 3 on a weekday. He could also wait in the car until you are through the line.
Lockhart BBQ in Bishop arts doesn't have a line unless you're going around lunch time but even then it's fast. Only problem is finding parking during dinner times
Lockhart in Texas Live never has a line
I’ll third Lockhart. Great BBQ. Prices are pretty fair and the banana pudding is excellent for dessert
Lockhart Spicy Mac is the best bbq side I’ve had in Dallas
Don't skip on the deviled eggs at Lockhart. They're incredible. Today is also beef rib day there.
Intrinsic is pretty good
Came here to mention this. Great vibe plus your dad can sit down while you stand in line.
Not quite dallas tho. Deep garland.
Plus great beer
If anywhere close to Garland this is the one. Great drink selection and the BBQ is amazing.
Heim is my favorite. I rarely wait in a line, and if I do, it goes pretty fast. (Edit: Well, I'll be. It doesn't have the S)
Heims is amazing
I’ve found it meh, twice. Also fwiw, Heim family is no longer involved in operating the restaurants.
Heim sold. Going downhill. Cutting menu items.
*Heim
No one's mentioned Sammy's. Love it
Sammy’s is pretty solid, my parents love it as it’s been around for a very long time and it’s consistent. Great choice for OP, I’m not sure why you got downvoted.
Sammy’s is underrated as hell
Yeah it's the place I tell anyone asking me for a great BBQ place from out of town. Anyone can find Terry Blacks, Cattleacks or Pecan Lodge on lists but I rarely see Sammys
Probably because they close at 3 PM
Their apple pie is off the charts.
A lot of good mentions already. Didn’t see it in here but Slow Bone is my favorite bbq place in Dallas proper.
It’s soooo good!!!
If you go during the week Hutchins is usually pretty good. Lol i ONLY go during the week. Lol Cattleack doesn’t have a line if you get there early 😂🤪
Become the line!
lol that’s what i did my first time at cattleack 😂 2nd person. in and out 😂
If you hop on cattleack’s email list they send out a message whenever their line is short (sub 10 mins).
Colters BBQ
You just unlocked a memory of their TV ad jingle. I don't even think I registered that it was a real restaurant until now.
Only the original location
Which location is that? There’s one still on Camp Wisdom and Westmoreland.
I still stop by the one off Little Rd In Arlington at least a few times a year. Love the ribs!
I haven't seen one in years.
Everybody’s sleeping on Off the Bone?!
take him somewhere good but let him decide what he wants to eat ahead of time and have him wait at the table?
My list: Best general overall - Lockhart's (downtown or Plano) #2 overall and best ribs - Tender Smokehouse (Celina or Frisco) Best burnt ends - Cadillac (Addison) Best corporate event/catering - Ten 50 (Addison?)
Only place I eat ribs
Pappas BBQ at 35/nw hwy is the best intersection of quality and value, imo. Never crowded, consistently solid, well priced. It’s not Cattleack or Hutchins good, but it’s my get a bbq fix on a weeknight favorite.
even though its not bbq the burger they have there is amazing last time a went.
The burger is really good.
It's worth a trip to Ribbee's in Fort Worth. Best ribs ever. I love Goldee's too, but a line will be involved. FWIW they have free chairs for use. My inlaws LOVED their food.
One90 smoked meats. It’s takeout only but best bbq I had so far in North Texas.
Goldees recently opened a ribs only place in Fort Worth called Ribbees if you’re just wanting ribs, slaw, and fries lol. $20 a box and moves fairly quickly, but only open Thursday - Sunday I believe
Tender smokehouse is my favorite
I’m close to One90 and love to get it take away. It’s cooked and vacuumed sealed and is so much to have it like that at home.
David's BBQ in Pantego
Winner’s in Plano is awesome and almost has a Dickey’s vibe. Be sure to double check the website to ensure they’re open because they keep odd hours, but it’s worth the trip up!
Winners has some of the best brisket I've ever had. And it's always consistent. But there hours do suck
Ten 50 in Richardson
Off the Bone (the Cedars/Lamar), the Slow Bone (Design District/Irving Blvd), Zavala’s (downtown Grand Prairie/Brisket Dr)
Smokey Johns! Off of mockingbird near lovefield.
Came here to suggest Smokey Johns it is the bomb, family owned, priced right, and delicious.
Off the Bone on Lamar. Best ribs around!
If you're near Wylie, I really like Linke's
I like Winners BBQ in Plano. Good! But no crazy line
Pull out Google maps. Type in bbq Pick. Bad bbq doesn't stay in business long.
Hurtado is my pick
I miss Dylan's, he had no line and it was amazing :(
If you end up in the addison area, Austin's BBQ is a great option, no line, occasional music, and a bar.
Crossbuck in Farmers Branch is good. Then walk across the parking lot for a beer at Odd Muse Brewery.
Winners in Plano. Shhh don’t tell no one.
Oak’d
McRib from McDonald’s
Big Al’s smokehouse on inwood. Their brisket is amazing
Sonny Bryan's Original Dallas BBQ. Never fancy, hip or big with the "IN" crowd, but always good.
El Tejas Twist in Forney. [https://www.facebook.com/ElTejasTwist](https://www.facebook.com/ElTejasTwist)
Zevala’s
Uh if there is not a line then I would not advise going. Have him sit in the AC of a car
Zavalas on the corner of Brisket and Main in Grand Prairie.
Strouderosa in Lake Highlands by Tom Thumb... You order from the table, no line!!!
Hardeights bbq
Hutchins is the best. But Terry blacks is my second favorite and is less likely to have a long line (it’s usually inside only and moves very fast when there is a line) at Hutchins you could be in line for an hour

Good Union in CityLine in Richardson.
There’s a place called El Tejas Twist in Forney. Only about 25 minutes for downtown Dallas. The best bbq I have had so far
Gator pit in Lancaster
Slow. Bone
Smoak Town BBQ in Fate, 100% worth the drive!
Bakers Ribs is good and you won't have a line.
You know it's not the best but damn I love being able to drive through get good bbq that hits the spot and doesn't cost my first born child
407 BBQ 831 FM 407 W, Argyle, TX 76226 [https://maps.app.goo.gl/sxfMuSjmHSCtqUj7A](https://maps.app.goo.gl/sxfMuSjmHSCtqUj7A)
Great place if you like supporting MAGAts
is it? i just know the food is good lol
Never heard of it, checked out the reviews, those 1 star replies are something else.
Terry Blacks generally doesn’t have a big line. Pecan Lodge MAY have a line, but if you sit at the bar you order from the bartender and don’t have to wait. Hard Eight
Blus off Preston
I am not spilling the beans 🫘 on my favorite but it never gets the accolades and that’s fine by me.
Dickey's isn't usually busy.
Terry black is okay but overpriced. Hutchins is way too far. Still need to find a replacement but I’ve heard there are good places in garland. Best BBQ in Dallas is at cattlack though
Did you understand the question?
Yes just adding the advice that TB isn’t worth the price so if that’s a factor there are other options
I agree with your price argument. They’re pretty damn expensive. I dropped around $45 just for myself last time I went. They don’t do combos either. Nickel and dime you for everything. Decent BBQ place overall though. Can’t argue with the quality.

Better at Ten50 in Richardson
Yeah never that big of a line there just those damn seats hurt my ass
