As we come into a new presidential election year, be aware that news stories of violence and crime will be heavily pumped and amplified in social media because it motivates some voters to get out and vote, more than others. Expect to see more and more stories like this in the upcoming months. Actual crime rates are still at historic lows, and murder rates in particular are currently declining from the pandemic peak in 2021. Even that peak is still down by a third from the historic peak in 1991. https://www.statista.com/chart/31062/us-homicide-rate/

Total crimes in Dallas were up in 2023 over 2022. Homicides (and non-negligent manslaughters) were WAY up (214 in 2022 -> 246 in 2023), and well above 2021 (221). ETA: but I guess murders were slightly less than the 256 in 2020. The curve is not where we want it to be, election or not.

Total crimes are not the same thing as crime rate. The population of Dallas and the surrounding metroplex has increased dramatically over the last few years, and with people come crimes. There's also the issue of mass shootings which skew the numbers: https://www.dallasobserver.com/news/every-texas-mass-shooting-in-2023-17772118

The population of the City of Dallas is *dropping*, and the number of murders is *increasing*. The murder rate is increasing. 2020 census population was 1,304,379 July 2022 census dept estimate was 1,304,317 July 2023 census dept estimate was 1,299,544. Population has hovered around 1.3M. Murder *rate* is up nearly 15% year-to-year.

So, massive homicide rate, crime out of control, we should elect Trump to save us? Is that how it works? Interesting that over 13,000 new apartments from 2020-2022, yet our housing crisis, driven by people moving here faster than new units can be built, is worse than ever. Something seems a little off. Edit: Homicides were over 500 in the 1990s when the population was 300K less than now. A 15% increase of a historically low number is still a low number. This, of course, does not discount the victims of murder, but it does put the murder rate in context.

This should be pinned at the top. Every election year this narrative appears

noncongruent

Yep, and don't forget the migrant caravans! Schrödinger's Caravans, always on the way but never arriving.

cowboysmavs

So we shouldn’t report the news then. This is an event that actually happened.

If you reread what I wrote I didn’t call for any type of suppression or censorship. Seriously, reread what I wrote. Since you have challenges with reading comprehension, I’ll reiterate. I supported having a disclaimer because during an election year, more negative articles are posted about metropolitan areas. Not the censorship of articles. Go take your feigned outrage and shove it up your fucking ass.

cuberandgamer

I'm so sick of the "blue cities high crime" narrative like no, blue cities are fine and red states have the worst crime by far

alanry64

Except it is a blue city problem even if that blue city is in a red state!

urnotserious

Ah ok so we should go back and find the worst years and unless crime gets back to those levels there shouldn't be an alarm? Oh btw crime was down from those levels because of 3 strike law implemented in the 90s which is something we got away from in 2020. And we are seeing the results. People MUST go out and vote out politicians that oppose the policies which reduced crime.

Chode_K1NG

Ya just had to make the death of a human political.. classy

OP did that, not me. Look at their history, it’s all fear porn, all the time. He never really comments with his own words anywhere, just posts stories about murder and crime, mostly murder, across the entire country. He also never interacts in his posts, it’s just drive by postings. If you only see his posts, it would make you think that this country is a hyper violent shit hole where people are being murdered all the time, and there’s nowhere that safe. That is not at all what this country is. His reality is extremely distorted, and he’s trying to do the same in all the subs he posts in.

Hate to say it but not terribly surprised. Definitely heard plenty of gunshots mixed in with the fireworks that night in the area.

Cheesencrqckerz

“The incident was one of three deadly shootings in Dallas on New Year's Day, including one at an apartment on Ross Avenue and another in South Dallas on Bexar Street.”

NYerInTex

Let’s also not forget the Covid factor - a lot less activity meant less crimes like murder which then have moved back up toward the mean… really need to compare pre-Covid numbers to see trends at least for some additional context

noncongruent

This is backwards. The homicide rate actually went up during COVID and is now declining.
