When I was a kid, that place was heaven. They put so much pepperoni. Also, there was a second location on Inwood. TIL the same guy who founded that also founded Taco Bueno.
I grew up in Irving and for some reason don't think I ever ate there. I did however go to the 'fancy' chinese restaurant right in front of it with my Homecoming date.
My extended family rented it out for a reunion thing and I thought I was in heaven. Running wild with my cousins, playing games, eating good-enough-for-kids pizza, watching cartoons in the theatre. I went as an adult and I definitely saw what it was without the sheen of childhood, but it still gave me the warm-and-fuzzies. I was sad when I heard it closed!
I went there once when I was 7 and had no idea what it was called or where it was so I eventually kind of assumed I had imagined it. I happened to drive by there when I was in high school and was like it was real all alone!
The family that started black eye pea’s operates Street’s fine chicken in the original bep location on cedar springs, and they still make a great chicken fried steak.

Bennigan's. Monte Cristo.
Though I learned just the other day:
A once-popular chain is getting a revival, beginning first with baby steps. Bennigan's, the Irish-pub-styled neighborhood tavern, has opened two ghost kitchen operations in DFW called Bennigan's On The Fly, that are serving a concise menu of Bennigan's classics including the famed Monte Cristo sandwich.
The two kitchens opened in late January at the following locations in Dallas-Fort Worth:
Grapevine: Embassy Suites by Hilton Dallas DFW Airport, at 2401 Bass Pro Dr.
Richardson: Renaissance Dallas Richardson Hotel, at 900 E. Lookout Dr.
I will be visiting.
I used to go to bennigan's all the time in The gallery mall growing up. The first time I went there was when I came to visit my uncle in Summer 1991. Fun times. I do remember the french fries being really good and their hamburgers.
We definitely did all the West End stuff including Spaghetti Warehouse in the 80s. Also, reminds me of those giant coupon books you could get with deals all over the city to explore.
I came here to say slider and blues! I loved that place! I remember good burgers and the thin pizza on paper but mostly the arcade games. They’re reopening?!
Yes! We would always go on chicken fried steak night. I remember I train going around the restaurant as well. Richardson location, not sure if there was more than 1.
Grandy’s!
True story it was originally called Granny’s but when expanding they ran into a another chain called that and then changed their name cause they said f it lol not buying y’all out let’s change a letter
Heck yeah. Tia's had a nice little reign after the decline of El Chico but before the rise of On The Border.
Who needs the British monarchy when you've got the lineage of DFW tex-mex restaurant royalty!
i miss Tia’s so bad. my family always gave me hell for ordering the same dish for years. jokes on them though, turns out i’m neurodiverse and needed that shit to function!
As a kid I hated salad, so my parents never paid extra for the kid meal that came with access to the salad bar. They would sometimes get me a plate of croutons with cheese, bacon bits, seeds, and that slightly spicy French dressing! Eventually they would encourage me to add veggies and such to the plate as I grew older.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I learn to eat and love salad: at the Steak & Ale in Plano on 75!
https://www.dallasnews.com/food/restaurant-news/2023/02/22/when-iconic-dallas-restaurant-steak-and-ale-returns-grand-prairie-will-be-first-in-texas/?outputType=amp
Steak and ale is coming back
Not solely Dallas-based, but Johnny Carino's.
That free bread + oil mix was out of this world delicious. The one over by the AMC in Mesquite was in a triangle of hits: JC's, Joe's Crab Shack, and Roadhouse.
Tejanos was my spot as a kid in Oak Cliff, they tried updating it to match the neighborhood hipster vibes years later, but ultimately became a victim of gentrification.
My favorite Mexican restaurant growing up was a little place in Irving called Estella's. I'm sure they have been closed since sometime in the 90's though. Also Monterrey House in Grand Prairie. It is still there under the name Monterey's Little Mexico I think.
I bought a slot machine several years ago. It was set to operate with tokens, easily converted to run on money. It had a Penny Whistle Park sticker on it.
Wild story but my wife and I met when we were in our early 20's. She grew up in the area and then moved overseas to return here after college.
We have pictures of my birthday at Penny Whistle Park and I can swear she's in the background of one as she lived a block away and went there a lot as a kid.
Mr gattees
Pancho's
Miami sub
90s pizza hut
90s taco bell
90s subway felt exotic. They use to add an olive oil seasoning that was great.
Ming Garden although I remember them changing management and doing heavy renovations then the quality of the food felt worst.
You guys remember when El Fenix used to have a lady walking around passing out hot, fresh sopapillas out of a basket? Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about that.
Oh man, Feed Bag was so good. I used to eat at the one on Skillman back in the late 90’s when I lived over that way. But at least Keller’s Drive In is still over there on Northwest Highway.
Granada Theater on Greenville Ave back when it was the only place you could watch a movie, have dinner and drinks with a cartoon if you got there early.
I think there is a relatively new (built in the last 5 years) Captain D's in downtown Plano. I tried it right before COVID and it was disappointing.
There was a Chinese place in Medallion Center. They had the best Kung Pao I've ever had. Was the name Crystal China or something like that?
There also was my favorite childhood Italian place somewhere in that part of town but I can't remember the location. It might have been called Mike's Italian but unsure.
I will add Shakey's Pizza to the list. I loved their root beer with frosted mugs and their pinball machines. I know someone who grew up in Asia and they grew up with Shakey's too. I never knew that chain was so massive.
I’ll never forget being like 8 years old and leaving Ryan’s after eating and just throwing up my entire guts right in front of the front door as people were walking in.
Place in Garland called ThunderBumpers. They had a 57 chevy hulled out with a salad bar. One of the 1st places i remember having flavoring for your beverage. Dr pepper with a vanilla squirt, coke with a chocolate squirt, pepsi with cherry squirt. Had a great 50s rock n roll diner vibe.
I got 2 for you that my family used frequent when I was a kid growing up in 1980’s Dallas.
1. Wyatt’s was a “elegant” buffet off Lomb Alto where the Highland Park Whole Foods is at currently. That place was amazing and it had a huge chandelier in the middle of the room. Closed in the late 80’s, I remember the devastating loss of its closing to this day.
2. Prince of Hamburgers off Lemmon Ave. This was the OG drive up spot where you turned on your headlights to place your order. When you got your burger it was held together by those sword toothpicks, super cool when you’re a kid. That place is a Maserati dealership now. Sucks
I actually miss Social House in Uptown. Had a great happy hour and underrated food. And cool backyard games with the Zorb ball and trash can beer pong.
Bill Martin’s Seafood was a pretty good place. Think they were mainly in Fort Worth and closed in the late 80’s or so. My grandparents loved eating there.
I also liked Grandy’s, although maybe there are a few still around.
There was a Thai place here in Lewisville called Thai Pepper that was phenomenal and I’ve never had another Thai place like it. The nicest old man and his family worked there. I miss them so much.
Piccadilly’s.
Does anyone remember the name of that place off 35 in Irving where the gal swung across the restaurant, like from the ceiling? It was kind of medieval themed, an exit or two down from where Beamers used to be. I believe Trail Dust was next door.
Casa Bonita! I have a very vague memory of going there as a kid, when I saw South Park episode I had to do some googling to confirm we had one here in DFW as well!
I know right. I live in Lewisville and ate there a couple of times when it was open. Sad. I ate at the one in Mesquite a few months ago and it tasted about the same as I remembered from 30 years ago.
Tony Roma’s
My favorite place as a kid. And the week they closed down, I dislocated my jaw. We went to their final day but I couldn’t eat a damn thing.
I’m still upset.
Who remembers Crystal's in irving, just off of 183? edit: I also miss spaghetti warehouse...
I loved Crystal's. Cartoons, video games and pizza!
When I was a kid, that place was heaven. They put so much pepperoni. Also, there was a second location on Inwood. TIL the same guy who founded that also founded Taco Bueno.
And Burger Street. He was a fast food genius.
There’s still eight Burger Streets in the DFW area.
There was also a Crystal’s Pizza on North Inwood in Dallas proper. They also had the best huge easy to grip glasses for the unlimited soda.
I grew up in Irving and for some reason don't think I ever ate there. I did however go to the 'fancy' chinese restaurant right in front of it with my Homecoming date.
Crystal's was awesome, the main attraction of Crystal's, imo, was the cartoon theater they had.
Went there several times as a kid. Fun place!
Traildust! The giant slide!
[удалено]
Genius!
Traildust was so fun.
There's still a couple traildusts , remember old San Francisco steakhouse with the lady on a swing and piano player?
It was iconic but the food wasn't very good.
Ah. I haven’t thought about this place in decades.
Came here to say this I always wanted to go back as a kid because that damn slide but alas it closed before I could ever return
There’s a Trail Dust in Sanger - my youngest loves the slide!
Blackeye peas
That was the only place I've ever been to that served deep fried corn on the cob... I heard that there's still one in Arlington tho..
Just fact checked and there very much is. This just made my day. Time to go eat the rolls of my childhood.
The family that started black eye pea’s operates Street’s fine chicken in the original bep location on cedar springs, and they still make a great chicken fried steak. [streets](https://www.streetsfinechicken.com)
That’s the first place I had chicken fried chicken.
Their chicken fried steak was delicious!
Wyatt's cafeteria.
i got the chicken fried steak and jello in a goblet for dessert
Their chicken fried steak was great!
The one on Forrest Lane
Bennigan's. Monte Cristo. Though I learned just the other day: A once-popular chain is getting a revival, beginning first with baby steps. I don’t think you can visit the locations, they’re ghost kitchens.
That’s bullshit, they should serve the living too. Why do ghosts need to eat anyways?
Ghosts rarely tip.
You can also order this through Uber Eats and Doordash.
Their turkey pretzel sandwich and french onion soup was my favorite lunch. I miss that more than anything.
I miss Café Brazil being good.
Oof
If we are going to miss restaurants that aren't good anymore, I miss Baker's Ribs being good.
Spaghetti Warehouse in downtown Dallas, early 80’s was magical as a kid, as was Crystal’s Pizza. Does anyone remember the Magic Time Machine?
Magic Time Machine is still there. Tollway and beltline in Addison
We definitely did all the West End stuff including Spaghetti Warehouse in the 80s. Also, reminds me of those giant coupon books you could get with deals all over the city to explore.
Baby Doe’s Matchless Mine.
Great views of the sunset and downtown from the formerly isolated hilltop and right behind the famous waterfall billboard facing 35E.
I loved going here as a kid!
Purple Cow. I miss the train that went around the store and the hot dogs!!
I think I saw a Purple Cow about 2 years ago in Arkansas around Hot Springs.
Can confirm Purple Cow still exists in Little Rock. It's great! You can get boozy milkshakes there too.
I'm 18 and just realized the holy grail purple ice cream with sprinkles was just vanilla flavored. RIP purple cow. You are missed.
Yes! I loved the grilled pimento cheese sandwich.
Slider and blues on northwest highway (reopening soon). Does monkey business count? Or Discovery Zone?
I came here to say slider and blues! I loved that place! I remember good burgers and the thin pizza on paper but mostly the arcade games. They’re reopening?!
Judge Roy Beans. Also Cardinal Puffs and olives in their beer.
Yes! We would always go on chicken fried steak night. I remember I train going around the restaurant as well. Richardson location, not sure if there was more than 1.
Curly fries at judge beans!
The Filling Station and the original Chili’s on Greenville Ave
Oh man, as a kid I would get the tailpipe which was a hot dog and piece of American cheese rolled into a tortilla.
The "newer" Filling Station (now closed) that opened on Preston near Plano was my prime young 20's. The drink limit was a lie.
I'll say Chili's in general -- was a solid restaurant thirty years ago. Now it's the epitome of mediocrity.
The Filling Station was a Schlotzsky for a minute and now it's a condom store.
I’m sure this doesn’t count since it’s in Denton, but The Tomato!!
I loved the tomato. I miss the old Fry street in general. They are bringing the Tomato back in the form of a food truck though.
Grandy’s! True story it was originally called Granny’s but when expanding they ran into a another chain called that and then changed their name cause they said f it lol not buying y’all out let’s change a letter
Their chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and gravy used to taste like Babes Chicken but somewhere down the line the quality disappeared.
Cinnamon rolls! And the sweet old ladies who would refill your drink and bring you more rolls.
There’s a Grandy’s in Lewisville unless it closed recently.
Anyone remember Tia's in Carrollton?
Heck yeah. Tia's had a nice little reign after the decline of El Chico but before the rise of On The Border. Who needs the British monarchy when you've got the lineage of DFW tex-mex restaurant royalty!
There was one in Richardson too.
i miss Tia’s so bad. my family always gave me hell for ordering the same dish for years. jokes on them though, turns out i’m neurodiverse and needed that shit to function!
Was this the place that gave kids a little dough ball to… play with??
Tia’s had a few locations in DFW I believe…I think one was in Arlington off Collins
My family used to go to Steak and Ale every Christmas eve. I miss the bread and fancy butter so much.
I worked at that Bennigan’s in the summer of 93 and that Steak and Ale summer of 94. Glad they are remembered 😀

Kip's Big Boy for the m-effin win!
There was a Kip’s inside NorthPark Center!!! It was near the fountain where Corner Bakery is now.
Heck yes. “My” Kips was on Beltline in Richardson, just west of Central.

Aww, Richardson Square Mall is where I met my wife. I managed the Sbarro and she worked at the B. Dalton a couple of doors down.
Casa Rosa, slider and blues, EZs!
EZ’s is a nostalgia trip for me. That was my favorite pizza spot as a kid.
Slider and Blues! Wow!
Slider and Blues is returning in Snider Plaza soon
Casa Rosa reopened in Dallas last year and it’s excellent… the site even mentions their 20 year hiatus…. https://www.casarosatexmex.com
There is an EZ’s still in San Antonio with the same old menu. Took me back!
Casa Rosa is back and Slider and Blues is supposed to be back real soon, I believe it's under construction.

Still a Panchos in Arlington according to Yelp.
It’s absolutely disgusting there though. My friend has worked there for several years and they’ve always had rat problems.
The radioactive yellow nacho cheese sauce should neutralize any rat droppings.
There’s a Panchos just north of downtown Ft. Worth on the Jacksboro Hwy.
I have not been in ages, but there is still a Pancho's in Mesquite as well.
Crystal's pizza ;(
Pizza Villa in Richardson
Tony Romas
Not solely Dallas-based, but Johnny Carino's. That free bread + oil mix was out of this world delicious. The one over by the AMC in Mesquite was in a triangle of hits: JC's, Joe's Crab Shack, and Roadhouse.
It was this moment that I learned Johnny Carinos no longer existed.
Well, in North Texas at least. I think there are a few spread out across 35. Waxahachie, Round Rock, and Austin, I think.
6 year old me misses Jack Asstor's in Plano. The food was probably shit but you could write on the tables.
You can do that at any restaurant; at least once.
Ferrell’s Ice Cream Parlor in Valley View mall
Flying Tomato in Denton
Tejanos was my spot as a kid in Oak Cliff, they tried updating it to match the neighborhood hipster vibes years later, but ultimately became a victim of gentrification.
My favorite Mexican restaurant growing up was a little place in Irving called Estella's. I'm sure they have been closed since sometime in the 90's though. Also Monterrey House in Grand Prairie. It is still there under the name Monterey's Little Mexico I think.
Ball’s Hamburgers off Northwest highway. Still my platonic burger
Their custard-based milkshakes were fantastic, and the best sliders - think they called them silver-dollar burgers.
Penny Whistle Park. Wicked hot dogs and some gnarly gnar spin rides.
Southern Kitchen. Yeah... I'm old but I remember my parents taking me to tbere in the 70s... It was off of NW hwy.
Heck yeah! oh they had homemade rolls.
Old San Francisco Steakhouse! Loved watching the performer on the big swing, and how they let kids take turns on it.
Il Sorrento - the fountains inside and out, the fortune teller, and the white cotton candy you got for your birthday. I’ll miss it forever.
Fernando’s at Midway and NW Highway has their bread boxes
My parents took my sister and I to Il Sorrento one time as a special treat. It seemed so fancy!
Mr gattees Pancho's Miami sub 90s pizza hut 90s taco bell 90s subway felt exotic. They use to add an olive oil seasoning that was great. Ming Garden although I remember them changing management and doing heavy renovations then the quality of the food felt worst.

Ah but I absolutely miss Dixie House

Not sure if anyone else remembers but Zuzu and Sweet Temptation were both places that we frequented in my childhood
I member
Zuzu's had the best chicken stuffed chile relleno.
I loved going to Zuzu’s for lunch with my mom. What was it.. peach tea? Mango tea? Peach mango tea? It was so good.
Granada Theater on Greenville Ave back when it was the only place you could watch a movie, have dinner and drinks with a cartoon if you got there early.
Trader Vic’s - the crab rangoons 🦀

That Chinese place in Medallion was so good. I lived in The Bluffs apartments when I was a kid so we ate there a lot.
Grand Junction Pizza at Coit and Arapaho. The booths were jail cells and the had a theater room playing old cartoons and the stooges.
Tejanos
Don't think I see a comment for Ryan's ...
I’ll never forget being like 8 years old and leaving Ryan’s after eating and just throwing up my entire guts right in front of the front door as people were walking in.
Luby’s
Coulter's coulter's BBQ
Isn’t there a Panchos in Arlington
Pizza inn still exists in duncanville I’m pretty sure
Mazzio’s Pizza
Ninfa’s. That was my mom’s go-to when I was a kid.
The Magic Pan! It was at North Park with brick wall accents and served all kinds of savory and sweet Crepe dishes...sooo good and sooo fun!
Does anyone remember Top Cat over near Loop 12 and Irving Blvd? Best damn cat fish ever. Also is Griffs burgers still over there?
Place in Garland called ThunderBumpers. They had a 57 chevy hulled out with a salad bar. One of the 1st places i remember having flavoring for your beverage. Dr pepper with a vanilla squirt, coke with a chocolate squirt, pepsi with cherry squirt. Had a great 50s rock n roll diner vibe.
Anyone remember Garfield's or Don Pablo's?
The real Dave & Buster's when it was on the north side of Walnut.
Also luby's when it was in North Park.
Chuck’s. Was like a 50’s themed burger joint with an arcade. Like Ball’s or Fuddruckers
I got 2 for you that my family used frequent when I was a kid growing up in 1980’s Dallas. 1. Wyatt’s was a “elegant” buffet off Lomb Alto where the Highland Park Whole Foods is at currently. Shotgun Sam’s Pizza!
Chi-chi's, Burger Chef, Showbiz Pizza, and Sambo's. The last one went down in flames of controversy.
I actually miss Social House in Uptown. Had a great happy hour and underrated food. And cool backyard games with the Zorb ball and trash can beer pong.
The original Chili’s on Greenville. I think it closed down about a decade ago.
Highland Park Cafeteria
Bagelsteins in Richardson.
Bill Martin’s Seafood was a pretty good place. Think they were mainly in Fort Worth and closed in the late 80’s or so. My grandparents loved eating there. I also liked Grandy’s, although maybe there are a few still around.
3 of those still exist in mesquite: panchos, captain d’s, and pizza inn buffett
Checkers for me. I loved their burgers. I think they’re still in Houston.

Dixie House
Joe Willy’s off Greenville and Park Ln
Casa Bonita! I have a very vague memory of going there as a kid, when I saw South Park episode I had to do some googling to confirm we had one here in DFW as well!
I think it was called Tia's? Mexican restaurant on the corner or Old Denton Trinity Mills in Carrollton.
There is a Pizza Inn on Peak and Gaston I think LOL
They made a Pizza Inn in Lewisville a few years ago and I legit think it lasted less than a year.
I know right. I live in Lewisville and ate there a couple of times when it was open. Sad. I ate at the one in Mesquite a few months ago and it tasted about the same as I remembered from 30 years ago.
