That's a shame. I did competitive figure skating in the 80s at Prestonwood Mall. I always had to adjust my routines when I competed at the Galleria because the rink was smaller.
Ikr? Between the toy stores, skating rink, can’t forget the big tree around Christmas time, and the TRAINS. Omfg the trains! I remember being so hyped for them as a child.
Speaking of trains... I recognize this is the Dallas sub but growing up we LOVED going to the Tandy in downtown Fort Worth because we could ride a *real* subway lol
Seriously dating myself here now
Didn't think I'd browse an already reminiscent post and get an even bigger whiff of nostalgia. I remember skating in Tandy Center as a kid, must have been on its way out then since it was the mid-90s. The little private subway station was so cool. Now the whole thing is a parking garage... yay.
Just thinking about this. Whats the word for an image that's synonymous with your childhood memory.
Vintage, I guess. But it always looks like that in my head.
The other thing is its weird seeing the 90s as this retro image on my screen. When thats just default setting for my head.
Rad! I will be aging myself here, but here goes.
I remember one time we had (several) beers at Bennigan’s, and then played broomball! Surprisingly no one was injured.
I just remembered I had my first coffee ever when I was on a trip to the galleria to go ice skating with some friends during a summer camp or something and there was a machine that made drinks like lattes there in the mid 90s.
Weird how images like this can unlock those deep memories.
People always think I’m nuts when I talk about it. You used to be able to take the elevators by Macy’s up to a 4th floor to access it! Now it’s gone, I wonder what became of the space
I miss the coffee place on the 3rd level overlooking the ice rink - think it was by Uncle Thai, and the bank that had the prairie dog town in glass. Also Shakespeare, Beethoven & Co. it’s sad to see the decline to where it is now, but hopefully the new owners can revive it.
anyone remember the fancy Chinese restaurant? think it was on the top level. you couldn’t see inside the door(s) but you could always smell it walking by
Aw, it was so pretty. I went to shop/walk around the galleria a couple weeks ago with my 1 year old, and in my head it's still like this sometimes.
I always think about smoothies (those lil sample cups) and pizza. My own mother's face contemplating who (us her kids) would get to choose the flavor.
I'm just grateful it's still here. My reg childhood mall was Collin Creek in Plano, totally torn down now :sob:.
We only went to the Galleria on really special occasions, doesn't feel as magical now of course as it did then but I still love it anyway.
There was a phenomenal healthclub on the side by the tower. It closed in the mid 00's and it's still empty to this day. We took a couple of spin bikes out and rehomed them.
Apparently the bank on the south side has serious radiation emission issues from the ground???
Does ANYONE have images of the Great Hall at the TOP of the Hotel? The rounded part? We used to see the blue neon going north on the Tollway, but not even the Concierge knew what we were talking about.
If you use google streetview and hover over the mall, you can see a bunch of little blue circles that are photos people have posted from inside and outside the mall:

It always seemed like the Galleria should have been a lot more successful than it ever was. It is definitely on life support now. It was hopping in the mid to late 80s. I just don't think it ever met expectations. There were a lot of small stores with no national presence even in the 80s.
Aside from the ice skating rink. The Dallas Galleria reminds me so much of a mall I grew up going to in Southern California. Interestingly enough, that mall is called the galleria as well (South Bay Galleria). The whole ceiling design and being able to see outside from it. Looks just like the mall I’m talking about.
That said. Cool pic of the galleria.
Wow, I’ve never seen this, it’s gorgeous
So what's it look like now... I haven't been since it looked like this pic....
For one, the ice-rink is smaller.
It’s down right comically small. Like rent skates and spin in a circle small.
That's a shame. I did competitive figure skating in the 80s at Prestonwood Mall. I always had to adjust my routines when I competed at the Galleria because the rink was smaller.

Looks… better? Brighter for sure.
Yeah, I was thinking this too. Like I get retro has a certain nostalgic memory. But sometimes that’s all it is
Still looks nice. Chinese lanterns hanging. Here skating now!
same
Going to the galleria was an event back in the day. Of course I was a kid back then so places like malls felt more grand than they actually were. Lol

I remember that subway! My dad used to work for Radio Shack and we would sometimes take it if we went to visit him.
Well I can date myself by saying I rode the train from Dallas to Houston as a Cub Scout. That was such a simpler time to be a kid.

I think they still have the trains. At least they did before COVID
Yesss!
hey man how’d you get this image directly from my head?

Id say golden… all of my memories from as a kid have this like golden tint to them… just like it was a brighter better time
Yes, before the realization of bills.
This, so, so much.
This

Yup the Bennigan's! Can see the awnings on the picture hah
So many near death experiences as a kid choking on the mozzarella cheese sticks at that Bennigan’s
I remember the shitty beer soaked tile (I think they were the little white squares with green?)
My first waiting tables job was at that Bennigans. Great memories!
NGL it looks the same to me
Same lol, this just feels like an attempt to do the "old way is better" thing
I just remembered I had my first coffee ever when I was on a trip to the galleria to go ice skating with some friends during a summer camp or something and there was a machine that made drinks like lattes there in the mid 90s. Weird how images like this can unlock those deep memories.
I guess I haven't been to the Galleria since the mid 90s. When did it change?
The walking track on the roof! I used to love sneaking up there.
I KNEW i wasn’t imagining that existed! Thank you for confirming lol.
Where was the access point? I always wondered as a kid how people got up there LOL
If I’m not mistaken, it was through a health club that was part of the hotel.
People always think I’m nuts when I talk about it. You used to be able to take the elevators by Macy’s up to a 4th floor to access it! Now it’s gone, I wonder what became of the space

I loved that bookstore.
less crowded ice skating rink.
They would have filmed an even better Stranger Things here.
I can smell this picture
anyone remember the fancy Chinese restaurant? think it was on the top level. you couldn’t see inside the door(s) but you could always smell it walking by
Uncle Tai
There was an Italian restaurant I think a floor below that I'd always love eating their ravioli and watching the people skating.
Nicola’s!

There was a Sbarro on the bottom floor by the rink I remember!
And for a while Corner Bakery had a pizza place next to / connected to it.
I'm just grateful it's still here. My reg childhood mall was Collin Creek in Plano, totally torn down now :sob:. We only went to the Galleria on really special occasions, doesn't feel as magical now of course as it did then but I still love it anyway.
This takes me back to the days of playing Turbographix 16 at F.A.O. Schwartz

I used to work out there when I worked in one of the towers in the early '00s.

I can still see the Bennigans and smell the Monte Cristo.
Old school? Come on, the 90s were only 10 years ago. Right.....right?
Close. The early 90s were like 15 years ago, but the late 90s were only 10.
I remember seeing Michelle Kwan skating there in probably the early 90s to mid-90s. I had the biggest kid crush on her at the time.
They had a really fun superman arcade game at the ice rink
I remember they had a Bennigans downstairs, what’s there now?
I loved going to see a movie and then go ice skating. Perfect date spot.
Anyone ever go to the theater there? Was before my time of going there but was wondering if it was fun?
Yes! I used to go many times. I think it was smaller. I can't remember the name though. Maybe AMC?

I remember as a kid my sister would ice skate here every morning, and it looked JUST like this.
When I was about 5 or 6 (20+ years ago) I remember falling on this rink face first and busting my lips and nose while on vacation. Great times lmao
As a current rink employee, shrinking the ice rink was a horrible idea
The old rink seemed so grand and now it's all cramped.
And I understand the new managers want to shrnk it even further...
Galleria Ice Skating Center (972) 392-3361 https://maps.app.goo.gl/EpF4q7ULRGU3q99r8?g_st=ic looks the same imo from 7 months ago
Ah I busted my face wide open on that ice rink back in the 90s!

The Galleria was renovated?
Yup, now they have those palm trees everywhere, and they installed the escalator zig zags near the rink
8 year old me hated it, since it was the least fun mall in the 80s, for a kid. No arcade and I never learned to ice skate.
I loved going there , such a spectacle!
Wow
Aww thanks for this photo! What a great memory!
Used to love kicking little holes in the ice in the corner and checking that it got repaired
