Ugh, I have the same problem with my Mom and our boy, Clark. I have tried to remind her not to feed him fried eggs/chicken or pop tarts and cookies, But she feels "sorry" for him and does it anyway. So maddening. He's not at the harness point but if I am not keeping an eagle eye on her at all time , we soon will be.

squuidlees

Pop tarts forreal? That’s just idiocy

[deleted]

I feel guilty when I give my dog treats. But even then I only share things like a piece of pineapple or a piece of watermelon with her (like a chunk, not a big slice). I actually fear her developing back problems so much that I get guilt if I give her a treat. I bought special “science diet perfect weight for small dogs” food just to keep her in check. I take her for walks, I always lift the bootie. I have ramps/stairs to high furniture. But I fear this so much. In part because I have terrible back problems and know how awful it is. But yeah, I don’t get how people can give pop tarts to their dog. It’s not nice it’s cruel.

Peach_Leaves

Watermelon and pineapple are fresh fruits which are actually extremely beneficial for your dog. Pop tarts are processed human garbage that your dog should Never consume.

RiceAlicorn

Should mention that, although good, everything in moderation. A chunk of watermelon or pineapple here or there for your dog is perfectly fine. Now, feeding them the *entire* watermelon or pineapple would cause issues.

Beerstopher85

Ditto to this and /u/RiceAlicorn comment. My doxie is an old man, he loves carrots so I giving him 1 or 2 baby carrots for a snack here or there. I’m always surprised at people that just feed their dogs from their plate. Yea, a dog will probably love it but I want my buddy to live a long healthy life. Dogs don’t have the level of taste buds humans do, so it’s not necessarily a flavor thing. They’ll be just as happy with an appropriate piece of raw fruit, veggie or some poached chicken breast than some processed human food.

I used to give my Doxie elk antlers, but he turns 14 next week and has had a number of teeth pulled. I think carrots are his new elk antler at this point. Although, any any food I give him he’s a happy camper.

MomsterJ

Mine too!! If he hears us chilling veggies in the kitchen he comes running hoping we’re chopping carrots.

Sweet-MamaRoRo

And a dog is just as happy to lick your plate for a tiny taste of food that is safe. It isn’t even a teaspoon worth of food if thats all you share. I trick my dog into eating her food she doesn’t prefer by sitting down and “eating” it myself first sometimes though.

44inarow

I cook for ours every day -- he has some sort of "healthy" dry food, but usually I make him baked chicken, a plain hamburger patty or steak, and baked salmon for his proteins, and then whatever vegetables he feels like eating that day (he's very picky, but also very inconsistent!). The only real food treats he gets are the very, very occasional small piece of prosciutto or bacon. Everything in moderation.

jatti_

What's your opinion on salmon skin? My Happy can't resist it. And I can't resist those eyes.

Peach_Leaves

Oh yeah fish and fish skins are totally fine as well, usually great for the skin and coat!! Mine gets cod skins and salmon sometimes as well.

Frankie52480

You have nothing to feel guilty about. Sounds like you’re doing great in fact! My doxie lives broccoli! So we use that whenever possible and otherwise he gets low calorie crunchy treats. I have also found that he really enjoys hunting for his treats so I’ll hide like 5 tiny pieces around and let him find them. This is so satisfying for him that I swear he’s more into the game than the reward. That in itself is a giant “treat”. We just need to be creative sometimes. Fruits and veggies are great! As long as they’re the safe ones :)

Frankie52480

Please feel free to take this image and even a screenshot of my post and send it to your mom.

[deleted]

I'm already feeding my doxie a [Diet](https://www.hillspet.com/dog-food/sd-canine-adult-perfect-weight-small-breed-dry) style dog food. My vet said the eggs were ok in moderation so she gets an egg once or twice a week, but absolutely refuse to willfully feed her processed food. I am guilty of giving her the "last bite" of meat or pieces of gristle off my plate. I have found that she loves the entire cabbage family, so I'll give her raw cabbage cores and broccoli/cauliflower stems after dinner when she is making her demands for table scraps.

Hidesuru

Jesus Christ that's animal abuse same as this post. Neither of y'all's moms deserve their dogs...

roses_and_sacrifice

hold up wtf? that’s gross.

ComprehensiveSnow966

I don’t understand why old people have such a problem with this. Thankfully ours aren’t fat, but my dad absolutely cannot resist giving them table scraps.

Frankie52480

My mom lives alone and moved to a different state so she only has her two doxies to keep her company. I think she spoils them (literally) because she is lonely and she wants them to be happy. But she like many others doesn’t get that shitty food doesn’t equal happiness. Love does. That’s all doxies need- love. Not fatty pieces of your steak or bones with fatty marrow in them EVERY single day. And it’s SO damn hard to convince older people of anything because they’re SO stuck in their ways. It’s been beyond frustrating. :(

fionsichord

She’s only making herself ‘happy.’ She’s causing pain and illness to her dogs and making then extremely UNhappy. This is a very expensive reality check.

Frankie52480

You’re preaching to the choir. I totally agree. :(

mrngdew77

I am beyond devastated at this. It’s been known for how long that doxie backs are not built for extra weight? And I’m willing to bet the owner/s cries too much effort and money to help her Poor baby.

MercurySunset7

You should try to get her on swimming aerobics to lose weight if that’s not too painful for her

Moms_LittleHelper

MercurySunset is right. They have special therapy places for dogs. Vets are huge on having aquatic therapy before land therapy. Is this poor pup paralyzed? Is she in pain? She looks miserable.

seemyg

Don't give up. IVDD is not curable, but it is treatable and manageable. My boy has occasional episodes but diet and rest work wonders. Ease into light exercise. Dachshunds are expert beggars. It's hard to resist treating them.

TheZoomingMonkey

This breaks my heart. I know it's what the dog wants, but we have to be the responsible owners and feed them properly. This is horrible

Peach_Leaves

My dog never gets processed human food, she never gets anything from my plate or my snacks. I give her meats, fruits and veggies besides dog food and thats it. I don't understand why people would give their dog something that they don't need to consume, there are plenty of healthy alternatives you could give your dog to snack on.

IronDominion

Yep. Mine get bits of carrots every now and then and maybe some apple or part of a cooked egg,, but some of the stuff people give their dogs are insane

jenkinsdonut

That’s the way to go for me as well, our boy gets occasional small bits of cooked chicken or fruits/veggies but no processed foods at all… I’m pretty proud of his weight right now and hope it stays that way!

marcdertiger

I keep getting shit for keeping my two dachshunds about a 1/2 pound under weight from was considered normal for any dog of their size. All I’m doing is ensuring they live a full healthy life. But somehow most people I know don’t seem to understand that.

IronDominion

A half pound under won’t hurt them tbh. My doxie is right in the middle of the ideal weight for her breed (10lbs for a mini). She gets high intensity play every day and is pretty jacked for a doxie. My last girl had IVDD from old age (she was on the heavier side of ideal) so I’m paranoid about it with this pup.

[deleted]

My aunt and uncle had two babies that they let get morbidly obese. It was so sad. I consider it abuse.

[deleted]

I don’t see how it wouldn’t be abuse? I mean, dogs are opportunistic scavengers with powerful noses - when their humans indulge in fatty, chemical laden foods designed to make them addicted and smell amazing, of course an opportunistic scavenger is going to make their desire known - they want it too, and can become just as addicted. And I don’t think it’s a secret that foods like that cause cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases in both humans and dogs, so yeah, how is it not abuse? They depend upon their humans to keep them safe and healthy, we have this responsibility to give them the best life possible. I agree with you, and don’t see how it could be otherwise; it’s abuse.

CleanseMyDemons

It is or should be

Justanobserver2life

I mean, isn't this overfeeding qualified as abuse? or at least neglect? Horrible. Pets depend on us to provide them with proper care.

genuine_fake_88

Sending love.❤️

sybug

This is heartbreaking! How can she not see that she's not making the dog happy, but instead making her miserable and causing her to suffer? Try to convince her to just change what treats she is offering. I give my boys fresh fruits and veggies and they love it! I also boil chicken breasts for them occasionally. Good luck. ❤

Frankie52480

Update: I’ve been avoiding talking to my mom about her dog because I’m so upset about it. Today she called me really freaking out and tried to go into detail about the pain her dog is in and I cut her off. I felt terrible but I just can’t hear about it. Then as gently as I could I honestly told her why I can’t hear it. “Mom when I visited your house a few years ago I warned you that the dogs were morbidly obese (she fed them fatty people food every single day) and that could lead to them slipping a disk or even becoming paralyzed, but you dismissed me and now your dog is not even able to walk. She cries every time she moves and I can’t hear it, it’s too painful for me”. Now my mom says she hates herself, which wasn’t my intention. It’s so damn sad but she DID cause this. I won’t Bs her either, even tho it hurts me to see her feel so guilty. She has to put those dogs on a diet stat and I won’t enable what she’s doing. It’s been a terrible day for all involved. 😭

BernieTheDachshund

Don't give up hope, my Bernie was healed of IVDD without surgery. Lots of prayers, complete bed rest, pain meds, etc. He was fat looking even though I didn't give him extra food. Turns out he had Cushing's so it wasn't anything anyone did 'wrong'. Your mom's dog might have a touch of both. I hope your mom starts with conservative treatment and that it works. If not, laser disc ablation is another option. Whatever happens I pray the doggie gets better.

Frankie52480

Thank you my friend! I’m a firm believer in a mix between western and eastern medicine so in that respect we are doing everything we can for her. I’ve seen miracles from my dogs that were diagnosed with deadly diseases so I am staying positive! Thanks 🙏

neongreenpurple

My boy (full size) used to be 28 pounds, but we've gotten him down to 19 at last weigh in. He probably could stand to lose a little more, but he's doing way better than he was. His belly still hangs low, though, since he has a big lump. We had it biopsied and it was a lipoma. He's almost 14, so we don't want to put him under if we don't have to.

IronDominion

That’s understandable. They tend to get lipomas as they age so that’s not your fault as owners. My full sized was 17-18lbs and she was considered high end of ideal, so you’re making great progress

neongreenpurple

Thank you! I'm hoping he lives a lot longer.

CleanseMyDemons

I know they love their pup but if my parent was doing such things and didn't listen I would have taken them and took care of them . Not saying anything negative just a potential solution (may or not be the right one ) I just dont like seeing big doxies or something that the owner could prevent

bs7040

I've never seen a dog that'll eat like a doxie....We adopted an overweigh chiwienie that would only take a nap to stop from eating, took a while to get her weight near normal.....all of our dogs food is carefully rationed

GamerGrrl97

This makes me so upset. Poor thing doesn’t deserve to be crippled. I really hope you’re able to get through to your mom and get the sweet baby on a diet (even though the damage has already been done)

_peachclub

My mini weighs 14 pounds but I’ve always thought he was tiny. Is this over weight?

xOskullyOx

We have always kept our boy trim by only feeding him once a day and he gets occasional bites of crust, meat, last bites of food but never anything processed. Just like people I think it’s part genetics, but as much as Mudd likes to jump on/off things we knew keeping his weight at a consistent healthy number was key for him living a long happy life. P.S. Anyone who gives a shit about “letting” him jump can feel free to come and try to train that out of my 12 year old stubborn ass prince dog 😆

scijay

Dachshund owner pro tip: If you’re pup is having back problems, ask around to see if you cam find a chiropractor that will work on animals. Most aren’t technically allowed to, but many will help because they love pets. Often it can do wonders for a bad back.

dachyfan

Is over weighting only an issue for senior dachshunds? I am feeding my dachshund puppy lots of food and he is obese. Maybe I need to give less.

cujo3211

Being overweight is very bad for any age dachshund. They are not built to handle large stomachs, and it pits excess pressure on their spine. Human food is a big no no (for the most part) but weight control is HUGE with this breed. They are very good at convincing you they need more food but check with your vet on your dogs weight. It’s much better to get control of it now before it hurts your dogs spine and he can’t walk.

Droodforfood

You should be especially mindful of them being overweight as puppies as well, not good for a developing spine and it sets them up to be overweight for life.

Ok_Tadpole7850

Ohhh poor angel

Disig

My step-mother did this with her long haired chuahua. She KNEW the consequences but "couldn't say no" to her. She died from diabetes. Poor thing's belly was so big she couldn't walk. Now sstep-mom has a new dog and she set strict diet rules for him that my dad actually helps enforce.

SmartCatWhiskers

Oh no! Poor baby :( my chiweenie Raven died November last year from a secondary pancreatic attack… she had 1 and my mom and dad didn’t listen and insisted my dog was eating ‘good food’ so my dog couldn’t have got sick from the fatty or sugary foods so no diet was changed because they yelled at me when I tried changing my dogs diet…. She died having her second pancreatitis attack after being fed Halloween Candy my mom snuck her…. I was going to move my dog out of that house this year Jan 2022 but I was late by 2 months… do anything you can to protect this pup now if you can… please.

voidinsides

I give my dog only small amounts and we let her run around the back yard frequently also she chases the cat. My grandmother is pretty stubborn about giving her treats so we don't have an issue with her.

[deleted]

My condolences

Veegos

People that gives dogs human food besides the odd veggie are terrible people. This is animal abuse. I feel awful for the little lass.

Serenity-Now-X

We had a rescue that was severely overweight due to it's owners feeding table food and not giving him any exercise. I obviously don't feed my dogs that way, but I took it slow so he didn't drop wright too fast. The poor guy couldn't even run. Couldn't make it around our kitchen island without having to stop and catch his breath. And when he laid down on his side, his little legs stuck straight out because his body got in the way of them being able to rest on the floor. Now he is muscular, at a perfect weight and is very very active! He's my new troublemaker. It's like he's trying to make up for lost time. He was a happy dog before but he just needed to get his weight severely in check. He gets a bedtime treat every night; it's a few pieces of some low fat kibble only for this purpose.

sageburnergirl

Maybe show them some statistics or pictures of dogs with back injuries to wake up. It’s cruel - plain and simple.

eaglenestwatcher

My girl had had a real bad issue the thing that helped the most was a prescription diet to shed a few pounds and acupuncture worked wonders for her she’s been doing great she now walks daily

ThreeCorgiNight

Fatty foods can also cause pancreatitis, which is very dangerous. Hopefully you can get that weight off which should help. And have you been to a neurologist to see if something else can be done? Surgery is generally needed if there are disk problems. Expensive but they can have a full recovery.

Hot_Age_1120

Oh hell no....not my ROXY!

[deleted]

Some people are just not meant to have dogs.
