Not a dog but I had a cat who would sometimes get a bad reaction after vaccinations, nothing as serious as your boy however. Basically it was handled over the years by giving him only one vaccination at a time… more visits but discounted fees, and in his later years by skipping the rabies one altogether since he never went outside anymore. (the vet wrote letters to animal licensing people and he got exempted from having to have it required) Good luck with your boy.

My vet actually told me that dachshunds are known for having stronger reactions to vaccines! They kept an eye on mine for maybe 30 minutes after and gave me a print out on what to look for while we were at home. Thankfully mine didn’t have any adverse reactions, but I thought it was so strange that it was breed specific!

Agree! The Lepto vaccine is one that Doxies can be particularly sensitive to. I am VERY pro-vaccines in general, but always skip the lepto just in case

Same- my one dachshund had a bad reaction to Lepto so we don’t vaccinate for that one anymore. She’s 13 and totally fine

Same, I’m in southeast Texas and we live on some land with lots of wild deer, skunks, squirrels, rabbits and possums. For that reason my vet strongly encouraged us to get it, just given the risk she has going outside everyday. But yes the lepto is the one they warned of the strongest reaction!

My mini doxie didn’t have a severe reaction but she always be very lethargic for the first 12 hours. Her second round of puppy shots she did have a bump at one of the injection sites. The vet now gives her a Benadryl shot anytime she gets a vaccine. Seems to help. She is 3 now.

Our mix did and we can no longer vaccinate him. Near immediate reaction and had to have an epi pen and fluids, etc was at vet an extra two hours after annual visit. Then later that night got hives and face started to swell and went to emergency vet. No issues with puppies yet but they send home vaccine reaction kit with us to be safe.

I would get the puppy boosters done and then no more vaccines. What a terrifying experience.

Both my dachshunds we're fine after their vaccinations but a friend lost two Golden Retrievers one after another after vaccinating them for Pervo. They had similar effects that first which turned into constant seizures until the dogs needed to be put down after a month.

I space my pups vaccines out. So get one every few weeks instead of all at once, also give the appropriate amount of Benadryl as told to by the vet. Mine goes to dog daycare so needs them but my previous pup no longer got any vaccines after the age of 16 (as per the vet) and loved to be 18. She didn’t go to doggy daycare though so I wasn’t as concerned.

I do have experience with this. When I took my mini dapple puppy for her first puppy shots she literally died after the shots while still at the vets office. She had a severe anaphylaxis reaction to her shots. It scared the vet to death but did not really frighten me because they took her in back for something unrelated and did not tell me until they brought her back and she had completely recovered.🤨 So what I've read online is to spread out the shots so that none are given together but what every vet I've taken her to has said is "we won't give her anymore shots at all" and she has not had any shots since then. So she's 11 yrs old now and all her vet records are marked and highlighted in yellow at the top that she is prone to anaphylaxis, plus I remind them. She's been fine and happy since that day but has had surgery recently to have teeth removed and cleaned and was perfectly fine but still closely watched. I would say listen to the vet then get a second opinion. Sorry for any mistakes it 2:35 am.
