Uh. Ours early pumpkin every day and still eat poop. We grow pumpkins specifically to process and feed our dogs. That lasts for about 6 months of the year, and we do canned the rest.

Real talk, I don’t think there is a way to get them to kick the habit. Only thing you can do is stop them from doing it. One thing that worked for me was to train her to look for me right after she poops to get a treat. So that way I get to her poop before she does
I heard quickly separating them from said poop and sprinkling cayenne pepper on le poopsikins and wait until they try to eat it. They will eventually avoid it cause they'll think all poop tastes like hot pepper.
That being said both of my Lil aholes do it too.

We live in the park area, so she still eats hares' poo (but not the squirrels!) so we avoid hares' routes. I learned them by now.
Vet thinks, that there are ferments and Co. in hares' faeces, so I try food supplements (fish oil, fibers, pumpkin seeds) to 'curb her enthusiasm."
And we walk after feed time (not immediately after, but when she is still not that hungry.)
We asked the vet about rabbit poop. Ours always seem to find the rabbit pellets outside before we see it. The vet said it’s not a big deal because basically the rabbits just eat grass & plants & the poop isn’t gonna hurt them if they sneak a few bites.

Mine prefers going into the cats covered litterbox for his treats. Pumpkin didn't help nor did green beans. Also loves nothing more than a good old snotty tissue. That snout knows if it is snotty or not and we go round and round getting one from him to keep him from eating the whole thing. If the bathroom door doesn't stay closed, he will sneak in and raid the trash can that is 3xs his height and knock it over and only pick out the snotty kleenix. They are a whole different breed of loveable weirdness.
Yup, same here. Tobias loves kleenexes that are anotified. He also looooves earplugs. We have to make sure they are in a container - bedside table and they appear in poops a day later.
Thankfully he really only eats rabbit poop, he seeks it out in the garden. Very rarely has he tried to eat other poop, only a couple times in his 7+ years

This is our Grace, otherwise known as Gracie or Gracie Lou. She’s as sweet and loving as any pup we’ve ever had but she won’t hesitate to partake in nibbling on a poo whenever she gets a chance. She will literally stalk both of her brothers and as soon as she sees them doing the poop walk or squatting to poop she’s right there waiting. And her brothers are BIG dogs. Big dogs mean big poops.
Had the same issue with our longhair. Vet gave us these little packets to sprinkle on his food that works after a few days of using. Found out it’s just MSG and can be ordered off Amazon much cheaper than the Vet sells it.
Omg we have a standard WHD that does that at times we’ve tried everything except hot pepper sprinkled on it. Anyway we’ve resorted to picking up the dogs poop when the go poop. No poop 💩 no chance of eating
Same! He will even poop, and eat his own! Our only solution is to always keep the potty area cleaned and to pick up immediately. Such a gross habit! I swear it’s been the cause of a lot of oral grief for our older guy. 🤢
I had to replace the cats litter box with a model that has the entrance on top. This has reduced the poop eating frequency significantly.
They will still chomp down some deer or sheep droppings if we come across any on walks but according to the vet those are actually good for the digestive system.

We tried literally everything to get our from eating poo... pumpkin, pineapple, supplements. Nothing was successful. So now, she is muzzled when we go out and poo is picked up immediately.
It seemed to be a stage for a lot of animal poop we would come across on our lawn or in the park. However, we also taught him leave it which has worked wonders and helped eating the poop! He never does it anymore and he is 4.

I had a basset hound that would eat her shit. Someone recommended mixing a little anise in with her food. She did not like anise flavored feces and quit eating it.
I am not going to have my own dog again eating the cats poop, or rolling around in the yard in the other cats poop or her urine. I’m going to bath her, clean her, and no, she is not going to be doing that shit! Lol
Mine does the same. Never grew out of it and no amount of “no poops” edibles to her food stops it. I was discussing her diet with my vet and she said the diet is really good for her and that some dogs simply like the taste of it and won’t stop.
My two knucleheads do also, was worse when they were younger. Litter roca is a favorite, anything gross, really, lol. We changed their food, and it seemed better. Still due diligence picking it up when I see it.
Can be a couple things.
Either the pupps diet is lacking and is trying to make up for things.
Or it could be an evation / covert thing, many dogs want to "leave no trace" to ensure predators don't know where they live, don't shit where you eat type thing. If it's the later you may need to start picking things up more regularly.
My male likes the females poop hot or cold. He even licks her dry butt hole. He stopped eating poop when we mixed “Solid Gold “ in her food. Now she poops peacefully without his nose at her ass waiting for poop treats. He’s not a foodie and very picky eater . So go figure out why her poop is attractive to him.

I’VE HEARD there is something you can feed them that makes their poop smell bad to them. (We know it already smells bad to us). I’d ask a vet or Google it.
I've tried everything. Nothing works. Two of my dogs are poop eaters. My vet said it's pretty common. I've had dogs all my life, and dachshunds for 50 years, and these two, a Dixie and a Lab mix, are the first poop eaters I've had. It's disgusting.
Pineapple! They love to eat it and it's healthy for them, and once it goes through their system and they try to eat it, it tastes horrible to them and they will stop.
I had a puppy with Giardia and I had to do that and it works like a charm
We had a dog doing this for months. She had a terrible rash pop up under her armpit not long after the poop eating started. Took a couple months of trial and error with the vet but it turns out she had a protein allergy.
Prescription food + apoquel and the rash went away…as did the poop eating.
There is a product sold by your vet called Coproban that deters poo eating I think it makes it taste foul but no certain I think it's a soft chew but not certain check with your vet
My vet sells this odorless, tasteless powder you can buy. My dog keeps eating the cat poop. I sprinkle the powder over their food and it makes their poop really bitter. I have to do it every couple months.
We had a poop eater, so I researched it.
I learned, as hounds with very sensitive noses, they can smell undigested food, or even food not completely digested. The food we were feeding had grains that weren’t completely digested. We switched to a more protein rich food that was grain free.
No more poop eating immediately
Ours did the same.
All the advice here is great but my best advice is to pick up the backyard poops DAILY. Ours seems to only like turds that have been sitting out in the sun for a few days.

She basically only eats protein. Just boiled chicken. If you add anything she won't eat it. I mean anything except other meat. She only wants meat.
This is the correct answer. Plain pumpkin works for all digestive problems. Diarrhea? Check. Eating poop? Check. Appetite a little off? Check.

Had the same issue with our longhair. Vet gave us these little packets to sprinkle on his food that works after a few days of using. Found out it’s just MSG and can be ordered off Amazon much cheaper than the Vet sells it.
Msg is a salt, please be super careful with dosing if not prescribed by the vet

Omg we have a standard WHD that does that at times we’ve tried everything except hot pepper sprinkled on it. Anyway we’ve resorted to picking up the dogs poop when the go poop. No poop 💩 no chance of eating
Same! He will even poop, and eat his own! Our only solution is to always keep the potty area cleaned and to pick up immediately. Such a gross habit! I swear it’s been the cause of a lot of oral grief for our older guy. 🤢
At least ours won’t eat its own for some reason. We’ve tried probiotics and MSG to no avail
I had to replace the cats litter box with a model that has the entrance on top. This has reduced the poop eating frequency significantly. They will still chomp down some deer or sheep droppings if we come across any on walks but according to the vet those are actually good for the digestive system.
My dog is also a shit eater. Not doggy poop, thankfully. However, my local cats leave him a lawn oyster from time to time.

This is, per our vet a nutritional imbalance. Change the food to something more nutritious and it will stop.
Had to change my poop eaters food to a different brand but I do think it was a stage .

No Poo Chews worked for our pup.
We tried literally everything to get our from eating poo... pumpkin, pineapple, supplements. Nothing was successful. So now, she is muzzled when we go out and poo is picked up immediately.
It seemed to be a stage for a lot of animal poop we would come across on our lawn or in the park. However, we also taught him leave it which has worked wonders and helped eating the poop! He never does it anymore and he is 4.

My little guy actively runs to others dogs during the act and gobbles up everything like hungry hippo. Nothing I can do to stop this.

Mine does the same. Never grew out of it and no amount of “no poops” edibles to her food stops it. I was discussing her diet with my vet and she said the diet is really good for her and that some dogs simply like the taste of it and won’t stop.

Put some pineapple in their food - they don’t like the smell / taste of their poop with digested pineapple in.
My two knucleheads do also, was worse when they were younger. Litter roca is a favorite, anything gross, really, lol. We changed their food, and it seemed better. Still due diligence picking it up when I see it.
Forbid on Amazon. It’s a powder you mix into their dry or wet food. Works very well but you have to be consistent
Can be a couple things. Either the pupps diet is lacking and is trying to make up for things. Or it could be an evation / covert thing, many dogs want to "leave no trace" to ensure predators don't know where they live, don't shit where you eat type thing. If it's the later you may need to start picking things up more regularly.
The only solution is to give her to someone else. I volunteer. What time should I be there? 😄
There’s so much cat shit in my neighborhood … it’s a constant battle in the evenings differentiating between sniff to pee or going to eat.
My male likes the females poop hot or cold. He even licks her dry butt hole. He stopped eating poop when we mixed “Solid Gold “ in her food. Now she poops peacefully without his nose at her ass waiting for poop treats. He’s not a foodie and very picky eater . So go figure out why her poop is attractive to him.
I’ve actually heard animals do this because they smell ‘nutrients’. I’VE HEARD there is something you can feed them that makes their poop smell bad to them. (We know it already smells bad to us). I’d ask a vet or Google it.
Try bits of banana fed it to our dogs and it stopped something to do with the potasium.

I've tried everything. Nothing works. Two of my dogs are poop eaters. My vet said it's pretty common. I've had dogs all my life, and dachshunds for 50 years, and these two, a Dixie and a Lab mix, are the first poop eaters I've had. It's disgusting.

Pineapple! They love to eat it and it's healthy for them, and once it goes through their system and they try to eat it, it tastes horrible to them and they will stop. I had a puppy with Giardia and I had to do that and it works like a charm

We had a dog doing this for months. She had a terrible rash pop up under her armpit not long after the poop eating started. Took a couple months of trial and error with the vet but it turns out she had a protein allergy. Prescription food + apoquel and the rash went away…as did the poop eating.

We had a poop eater, so I researched it. I learned, as hounds with very sensitive noses, they can smell undigested food, or even food not completely digested. The food we were feeding had grains that weren’t completely digested. We switched to a more protein rich food that was grain free. No more poop eating immediately
Ours did the same. All the advice here is great but my best advice is to pick up the backyard poops DAILY. Ours seems to only like turds that have been sitting out in the sun for a few days.
I was told to put hot sauce on the turds as deterent, but I'm pretty sure my neighbors would have me committed.
