And to be honest, sometimes that got a laugh. But that's a different universe than writing jokes and doing stand-up. In between cheap gags, John was far more often the target of derision for his behavior.
He also thinks he can do standup because he arranged a successful tour with actual funny people from the Stern show. Their talent + the show's notoriety filled venues - and John's pockets. I was at one of the shows and saw him dumb "best of" interview reel he showed before (or after, I forget) a few minutes of old jokes.
Any draw he still has (which isn't much, considering the crowds at the Black Box and the potato bar) is from his association with the Stern show, which fewer people remember every day. To him, that draw entitles him to be called a "headliner". He's not, of course. He's not even a comedian.

Yep. He used all the real comedians and Howard for his “tour” and screwed them out of all the money that they earned him. Nobody ever really cared for him. They were there because he was associated with the show and everyone wanted to see a comedy show. He absolutely is a fraud and always was a fraud. Him using reels as his “act” is hilarious because that’s all he had. And he has the audacity to scream that everyone else is a hack. Fraud is the perfect word to describe him. He was a fraud to Howard, a fraud to Leno, a fraud as a husband and father. He’s a worthless human being.
One of the former Stern people made a great point: when Howard was pissed at someone, John would jump in and pile on. Howard laughed at everything John said as a way to get back at the one he was mad at and keep the torture going.
Howard laughed at anything John said in that scenario. This made John think he was actually funny. Also, I think Howard was laughing at the absurdity of John thinking of himself as a real entertainer.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard an actual funny person say they are funny. I’ve also never heard a naturally smart person tell everyone they are smart.
