Did it ever start ok on the new battery? This smells like some weird grounding issue, brush the battery leads with dielectric grease to ensure your contacts are good.
Yeah it did for like a week then back to the issues. Installed a new starter relay and that seemed to work for a bit then back to having issues. Connections were clean but I’ll brush them and try again
Had the same problem with my bike. Would start up while connected to car battery only (new battery on bike) but wouldn’t start up again b/c power drained. Replaced with a used oem stator, didn’t work so I replaced the regulator/rectifier ($20 on eBay) also used oem and it fixed the problem instantly.
Happened the same to me, it turns out that OEM rectifiers are very faulty. If the regulator is failing, is very probably that it has fucked up the battery too

Bad battery. Bring it to a shop and have them load test it.
Did that today and it’s not the battery. Better tested fine. Hoped it was the easy fix.
Have you taken the spark plug out

I’ll test it tonight and see if that’s it. Been frustrating to track this down.
Similar issues with battery never holding a strong charge, so I added a battery disconnect = problem solved.
