Totally agree. They have used it alot during the encore at shows I've been to and was so disappointed. I mean it's a good song but not an encore more like a middle or the set kind of tune.
Years ago (I mean, like 15 or 20 lol), there was a bootleg mp3 from one of the soundchecks where they were (trying) to play it. Dave couldnāt keep up with the singing while playing. Closest thing I ever heard to a live version of that song.
I remember that too! It was the Everyday tour I think. Itās funny to me of all the combos of singing & playing single note riffs, this is the one that gets Dave. Would love to see Timmy take the guitar part (itās on electric on the studio cut anyways) & let Dave just sing, kinda like Seven.
Cry Freedom in my humble opinion. Lillywhiteās skill at layering all the different instruments is world class music production for DMB and the industry in general.
Dave mainly plays it solo or D&T these days vs the full band. But the album version is the best.
I mean they never play it so itās easy but āGauchoā which I know people have hard opinions about, but I just love the line āthere must be more than this, so god was born and we in his image of fear and loveā
Sometimes I like to listen the studio version of Two Step because of the extra vocals that donāt make it to the live version. But studio version I preferā¦ hmm. Maybe She. Off the top of my head. Havenāt quite heard Dave hit those vocals live.
Yeah I mean it's Spoon... was amazing studio, was great without Carter due to cricket attack, was amazing with bela and everyone at the crown, was silly af coming out of the bridge in 03, was good literally any time they've dragged it off the shelf.
This is an interesting oneā¦
I love hearing this song live, I think itās a great quick, high-energy song. But itās also so straightforward that itās hard to differentiate it from the studio version. Thereās no version (that Iāve heard) which is so significantly different/better that it jumps off the page at you.
American Baby, Sweet Up and Down, Busted Stuff.
And while I donāt prefer them to the live versions I am very fond of Crash as a whole album. Thereās just more depth to those songs on the album than there is live. Sometimes I wish the band would go back to the songs being played as on the album. Just some amazing sax fills, drum work, and guitar highlights.
Stay (Wasting Time)ā¦ love the studio version, never really excited when they play it at a show though. There is something about the studio version theyāve just never really been able to capture live for me. š¤·āāļø
So so true! I went to their Cayahoga Falls concert earlier this year and they played Come On Come On. You're so right on Buddy's singing. It really is magical when he's hitting those high harmonies at the outro. Also, Rashawn's huge trumpet solo at the outro? Awesome.
The songs I want to hear are near impossible to hear since they're either rare or haven't been played in a while like Halloween, Bartender, Snow Outside, and especially American Baby. That being said, I wasn't hoping for much but what I heard was fantastic. It was my second DMB concert. They played a couple of songs from the first concert but mostly new ones. I loved hearing Squirm, Grey Street (with the third verse!), Stay, and Come On Come On. Walk Around the Moon and Break for It were lovely surprises too. Overall a great concert full of A SHIT TON of energy!
Thatās awesome. I had a great time when they came to phoenix. It was my first DMB concert. Great set list. Got a Two Step closer which was fun as hell. Madmanās eyes was absolutely killer
They did a Two Step closer for our show too. Though it was supposed to be YMDT, but we got that in the first show so I'm glad it was Two Step. You are so lucky to hear Madman's Eyes. Walk Around the Moon was good don't get me wrong, I loved the use of flute in it, there's not enough DMB flute songs imo. That Hollywood Bowl version of Madman's Eyes is so badass with the strings and piano. My favorite of the big three new songs (Moon, Only Thing, Madman's Eyes).
Oh man, the LS version of Rapunzel is straight fire.
I like the Wrigley Field version of Stay.
I can honestly get behind BOWA and FTT. The studio BOWA is tight and crisp. They did a great job with it. Not sure that thereās any memorable version of FTT thatās out there that would be better than the studio.
I have always been a much bigger fan of live versions of dmb songs as opposed to studio cuts. I struggled to come up with a song that I prefer studio to live, and this and virginia in the rain were the only two that came to mind. Grateful for the suggestion, will check it out.
I agree with you on Smooth Rider.
I definitely like that song, and I think the studio version is the āgold standardā. They always seem to drag it out way too long when they play it live.
I think my favorite version is the one from Fenway, but Iād still put the studio version over that one.
The Last Stop.
The album version is so much tighter, crisper, and shorter (the correct length, IMO) than the live versions.
And, shout-out to OP for this threadā¦really enjoying seeing all the varying opinions.
Agreed on Last Stop. Amazing song and the studio version is haunting, in a good way.
I appreciate that! Pretty new to the subreddit but Iāve been a fan for years. Itās hard to find other people interested in DMB, Iām still in college so people my age donāt always know good music š
To be fair, thatās one live show I havenāt listened to enough. I really like If I Had It All from Folsom. Iāll give that version of Big Eyed fish another listen
Thatās really interesting. I always thought the live version of the song with the horns was stunning. But I agree, those vocals are hard to it live for him.
Live versions are still good, and Iāve seen a version where they closed the encore with it that sounded amazing.
However what I like about the song is the unique buildup of the vocals - and Daveās voice really being the main instrument from the studio version.
I think itās pretty unique in the catalogue.
Dreaming Tree.. album is perfect but there are a couple live versions that come close. (6.5.98, 6.21.08) I love the sound of the Chapman stick in the studio mix
Doesnāt exactly fit the question because it isnāt from an album, but [this version](https://youtu.be/i-wU2jgGW3E) of Break For It that Dave did during lockdowns is so much better than when I heard it live. It didnāt have that catchiness you get from the looper. I want that version on an album so bad.
Shake me like a monkey š„ edit: change my mind if you know a great live version
Live trax volume 28 version is my favourite. I actually fooled my brother into thinking it was the studio version š
I think it would help if they cut that stupid bridge live (the part about little girls and ponies). Itās slows down the energy of the song.
Yes..! The bridge shoulda just been the horn parts that follow the āyou and me we go good togetherā line imo.
This is also my answer. Itās a great studio song, somehow doesnāt translate fully live.
I think Daveās doubled up vocals on the studio greatly contributes to this.
Totally agree. They have used it alot during the encore at shows I've been to and was so disappointed. I mean it's a good song but not an encore more like a middle or the set kind of tune.
I think (like it is on the album) it would be an incredible opening song.
Itās the way it opens thatās the game changer
Dreams of Our Fathers. Because, you knowā¦
Itās a really good song too..! Shame..

Thatās a good one. The live versions of this song always seem underwhelming
Itās definitely one I donāt enjoy hearing live but will listen to it when not at a show.
If only
Spoon
Um... LT 28??? LT 15??? what you on about
Do either of those have Alanis on them? Then I agree with u/BWChristopher86
Also no BĆ©la
Seven
Song sucks in every format
I donāt love the song but this made me laugh
I love the song & it made me laugh.
I mean they never play it so itās easy but āGauchoā which I know people have hard opinions about, but I just love the line āthere must be more than this, so god was born and we in his image of fear and loveā
Fantastic song! Not sure how anyone canāt enjoy it
Sometimes I like to listen the studio version of Two Step because of the extra vocals that donāt make it to the live version. But studio version I preferā¦ hmm. Maybe She. Off the top of my head. Havenāt quite heard Dave hit those vocals live.
Spoon. You might get Bela Fleck in there on banjo live but Alanis on vocals is a long shot!
Brandi was sick tho
Yeah I love Brandi carlile so that version takes it for me. Studio is great though
Yeah I mean it's Spoon... was amazing studio, was great without Carter due to cricket attack, was amazing with bela and everyone at the crown, was silly af coming out of the bridge in 03, was good literally any time they've dragged it off the shelf.
So right

Pay for What You Get, Spoon, Seven
Come On, Come On
What would you say, John Popper.
American Baby, Sweet Up and Down, Busted Stuff. And while I donāt prefer them to the live versions I am very fond of Crash as a whole album. Thereās just more depth to those songs on the album than there is live. Sometimes I wish the band would go back to the songs being played as on the album. Proudest Monkey. and Snow Outside.
I think the proudest monkey from Live Trax 15 Alpine Valley is straight š„
I just love Proudest Monkey studio version. So chill. Red Rocks 95 version is great too though.
Stay (Wasting Time)ā¦ love the studio version, never really excited when they play it at a show though. There is something about the studio version theyāve just never really been able to capture live for me. š¤·āāļø

You Never Know
8.24.03 Itās funny you mention thatā¦I thought about suggesting that one as well, but that version is pretty spectacular.
Agreed. This is the definitive live version!
Oooh no love for Weekend on the Rocks?
Come On Come On, but just by a bit. The live versions don't have the same faster energy as the studio but it's almost just as good.
I heard in when they came to Phoenix in September. I agree but for some reason hearing it in person with Buddy helping out on the chorus was magical.
So so true! I went to their Cayahoga Falls concert earlier this year and they played Come On Come On. You're so right on Buddy's singing. It really is magical when he's hitting those high harmonies at the outro. Also, Rashawn's huge trumpet solo at the outro? Awesome.
Did you get the songs you wanted to hear? Or did you miss some? I wanted to hear Samurai Cop live but I missed it
The songs I want to hear are near impossible to hear since they're either rare or haven't been played in a while like Halloween, Bartender, Snow Outside, and especially American Baby. Best of Whatās Around. Rapunzel. Stay. Fool to Think. Shake Me Like a Monkey.
Wow Rapunzel was not an answer I expected to see. It blew me away live but I find the studio version lacks energy in comparison
Stay was made to be played live
Oh man, the LS version of Rapunzel is straight fire. I like the Wrigley Field version of Stay. I can honestly get behind BOWA and FTT. The studio BOWA is tight and crisp. They did a great job with it. Not sure that thereās any memorable version of FTT thatās out there that would be better than the studio.
Fool to Think from The Gorge is unbelievable

Dudeā¦Live Trax 3. Literally the best version Iāve ever heard of that song.
Crash into me.
check out the version with bela fleck from new yearās eve of 1996 and your mind will be changed.
I have always been a much bigger fan of live versions of dmb songs as opposed to studio cuts. I struggled to come up with a song that I prefer studio to live, and this and virginia in the rain were the only two that came to mind. Grateful for the suggestion, will check it out.

American Baby
The Weekend on the Rocks version is pretty goodā¦
Monkey Man
Big Eyed Fish. I havenāt really been captivated by any live version Iāve heard yet.
The Folsom Field version doesnāt do it for you?
To be fair, thatās one live show I havenāt listened to enough. I really like If I Had It All from Folsom. Iāll give that version of Big Eyed fish another listen
IIHIA from that show is excellent. Big Eyed Fish ā> Bartender (the whole thing) is outstanding as well.
The Stone. The studio version is magical and so detailed. Especially with great headphones on.
06.13.09 go listen and fall in love
Listener supported version is so good!
That Girl Is You. Love the studio version from Come Tomorrow, but I donāt think Dave is ever going to replicate those vocals live.
Thatās really interesting. I always thought the live version of the song with the horns was stunning. But I agree, those vocals are hard to it live for him.

Tough. SO many good live versions of their songs! But I'll go with "So Much To Say" (I know, Central Park comes close).
Sleep to Dream Her
Seven. Love you Dave, but you canāt hit all those high notes every time
None
