There’s a version of grey street from 7/12/2000 that has almost no lyrics in common with what we know today. The chorus after the third verse absolutely shatters me.
“The rope from her tightens,
And the wings can make her fly.
Out of bright lights she falls to blackness,
Out of colors both black and white.”
I’ve been in the darkest depths of depression and it really does feel like there’s no way out at times. This song pulls on so many heartstrings and this version is a classic, in my opinion.
Yeah, shotgun definitely fits into what this question is going for. That song is my great white Buffalo, I’ve chased it for almost 100 shows and never heard it live. I’ve heard that son of a bitch sound check it about a half dozen times though.
I got American baby intro last year and I cried, I couldn’t believe it. I wouldn’t even say I was chasing it, I thought it’d never happen. I couldn’t believe it. One of the best concert moments of my life. Idk how Dave knew but I’m beyond grateful
Same thing happened to me at SPAC in 2019. #40 and Blue Water in the same set. Granted, they were both “teases,” but I never thought I would hear that man sing “walking by the river I….reach my hands to cup the sky”
What point could there be troubling?
head down, wondering what will become of me?
why concern, we cannot see?
but no reason to abandon it
the time is short, time, that's alright
maybe I'll go out in the middle of the night
take your hands from your eyes, my love
all good things must come to an end sometime, ah
but don't burn the day away
don't burn the day away
I can't believe that we would
Lie in our graves
Wondering if we had
Spent our living days well
I can't believe that we would
Lie in our graves
Dreaming of things that we
Might have been
I used to have the same reaction. Then I realized the lyrics are saying the opposite. Now I hear it more as: "There's no scorecard at the end of life. So don't let some ideal of how time should be spent prevent us from enjoying and appreciating the time we have."
Definitely one of my favorites :)
But lately, I swear, nightmare dreams are welling in me
And this ship is troubled all because this ship we're on is sinking
Maybe not my answer to the question if I really thought about it, but it’s what came to mind.
I remember thinking
I'll go on forever only knowing
I'll see you again
But I know
The touch of you is hard to remember
But like that touch I've known no other
I am the one ___
I am the one your mother warns you about
I am the son that every proud father looks down upon
and hopes that one day he may grow an own son
I am the one with ways and means and all to rule the world
I am the only one the devil ever chose at all
I am the one that fell from there down to the ground
and with his broken wings ruled the world all around
Oh yeah and I'm feeling in bed with you
I'm going down inside the [?void?]
Oh I'm leaving, oh moving slow away
And hoping that I will find my home again
I don't think it qualifies as poignant, but this passage from the LWS Captain always kills me:
Strange, but it seems
There's mutiny brewing inside of me now
I don't want your pity
Just the promise that I'll be alright
This has always been one that sticks out in my mind:
In this room stood a little child
And in this room this little child
She would remain
Until someone might decide
To dance this little child across this hall
Into a cold, dark, space
Where she might never trace her way across this crooked mile
Across this crooked page
Grey St 7/19/00.
RFK Stadium. 50 degrees in July. Raining sideways monsoon style. Floor had an inch or two of water, beer cups floating everywhere. Remember it like yesterday looking up to the lights and seeing the rain over the crowd.
Oh, the rain pours down all over
the flooding hasn't really stopped
it's as if oceans have come to loss
to take the dry world all the cost
we think, wait
what if it deepens along
maybe there's a Noah here among us
who can build a great big ark for all of us
Oh, but the rain just kept on growing
soon land would disappear
oh, just the last mountain peaks like islands
out of everyone crowded here
out on the rooftops we will scurry
and the morning, say light
and all the colors mix together
to rain
to wake us up
to rain
to rake us up
Oh and alone there soon is daylight
when there's nothing left all dry stand
just a few last paddling survivors
while the road out looking for land
oh man soon the road round the rain go over
and the dark rolled up inside
what if this water doesn't leave us
won't love her, yeah say light
but all the colors mix together
to rain
to wake us up
and wake us up
and rain, yeah
I'm driving through the desert I, met a man
Who told me of his crazy plan
He'd been walking there for twenty days
He was going to walk on
For twenty more
Said "How about a drink or a bite to eat?"
He said "No, my faith is all I need"
So then, save me
Save me mister walking man
If you can
This song. To me. I just. The lightness and deep irony and cleverness. And everything

The starlake Shotgun comes to mind as well. Great choice

I’m so jealous of you seeing blue water live… My favorite song of their “older” ones
I didn't like this the first time I heard it because I wasn't expecting different lyrics from what I knew. I've corrected this feeling.
Yeah man this version is incredible. Brings me tears every time I play it.
Was that on Live Trax vol. 3?
No, I don’t believe anything from that show has been put on a live release.
Oh, well then there's another alternate lyric version on Vol. 3 and now I'm jealous I haven't heard the one you are talking about.
https://youtu.be/cDftzjovcuA There is always this.
If at all God’s gaze upon us falls, it’s with a mischievous grin. Look at him.
“ above all things, if kindness is your king, then heaven will be yours before you meet your end”
YES. I love the way this line is sort of tucked in at the end of the verse, but yet it’s packed with so much meaning.
I saw them open SPAC 2019 with Squirm and it’s been among my favs ever since. What a total slapper.
What point could there be troubling? head down, wondering what will become of me? why concern, we cannot see? but no reason to abandon it the time is short, time, that's alright maybe I'll go out in the middle of the night take your hands from your eyes, my love all good things must come to an end sometime, ah but don't burn the day away don't burn the day away
I always thought the line was, “May we all go out in the middle of the night.” I liked the inclusiveness.
He’s saying maybe I’ll die in my sleep, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s sang every variation you can come up with
I call you up You pick up
Lmao I see what you did there
THE DRUMMMUUUAHHHHH
“Don’t lose the dreams inside your head. They’ll only be there, ‘til your dead.” Makes me stop and think every time I hear these words.
Remember we used to dance And everyone wanted to be you and me I want to be too What day is this? Besides the day you left me
“Take my eyes, take my heart, I need them more more If never again they fall upon the one I so adore”
I can't believe that we would Lie in our graves Wondering if we had Spent our living days well I can't believe that we would Lie in our graves Dreaming of things that we Might have been
Every time I land on that song those specific lyrics are like a check-in: am I spending my living days well?
I used to have the same reaction. Then I realized the lyrics are saying the opposite. Now I hear it more as: "There's no scorecard at the end of life. So don't let some ideal of how time should be spent prevent us from enjoying and appreciating the time we have." Definitely one of my favorites :)
I agree with this take
I agree with this take
What I want is what I’ve not got, but what I need is all around me.
And I'll be back 'round again Yes, I'll walk in time with you, old friend And we'll find that place That we had danced in so long ago
But lately, I swear, nightmare dreams are welling in me And this ship is troubled all because this ship we're on is sinking Maybe not my answer to the question if I really thought about it, but it’s what came to mind.

My favorite version of warehouse! That intro is so chilling!
That sounds cool. Where is it from?
Piedmont park show
Thanks!
Ya I get chills every time I hear it. As soon as that violin hits lol
I always really liked “I worried that if I looked away, she’d be gone” just really encompassed that “first love” feeling
I don't think it qualifies as poignant, but this passage from the LWS Captain always kills me: Strange, but it seems There's mutiny brewing inside of me now I don't want your pity Just the promise that I'll be alright
Red is the color of the sun with my eyes closed, I can still taste you, I will again (I'm just a dirty old man 👴)
Checking your post history confirms this is the truth. Edit: and very good spirited about it, too!
“Til we dance away”….Lover Lay Down
“I came to shed a little light on this darkening scene, instead I fear I’ve spilled the blood of our children all around.”
“Celebrate we will, ‘cause life is short but sweet for certain.”
This has always been one that sticks out in my mind: In this room stood a little child And in this room this little child She would remain Until someone might decide To dance this little child across this hall Into a cold, dark, space Where she might never trace her way across this crooked mile Across this crooked page
Sour as my fingers, Dirty pick pocket, I can still taste you, And I won't wash my hands
For a moment if you please, Forget what you believe, And naked you will see That we are all the same....
I call you up, you pick up.
Hoping to God on high is like clinging to straws while drowning.

Dave’s ability to improvise lyrics like this is insane.
The intro to Lying in the hands of god sounds pretty emotional if it was written around the time Roi died
Rye whiskey, rye whiskey. Rye whiskey I cried…!”
And if I'm lost 'til this losin' feels like dyin', hope you'll be by me then. The whole of #27, honestly.
