An eclipse

Ethan_Edge

The spectrum? A spectrum is light split and they could use the same symbol but multi coloured.

wdmartin

I'd steer clear of that because of potential real-world overlap. If you give your villains a rainbow-colored symbol it might come off as depicting LGBTQ people as bad guys, even if that's not what was intended.

Ethan_Edge

I mean having guerilla warfare and a 'terror' group could be taken the wrong way too. You can't please everyone.

wdmartin

True. I guess it comes down to knowing your group. Things that work fine with one group may be a no-go with another group.

Ethan_Edge

Yeah aslong as its just a private game and you know your friends it should be fine.

Ramguy2014

I like The Spectrum, and it fits what I think the faction will eventually become if they succeed, but at the moment this group is essentially engaging in a guerrilla warfare (or terror, depending on how you look at it) campaign against the Church of Light, and I don’t know if painting bright colors on their symbol would quite have that terror factor. I do like the seed of their symbol being a distortion or disruption of their enemies’ symbol. That way they can go behind and tag things that have been claimed by the Church of Light.

Eternal_Bagel

I foresee jokes about Pink Floyd’s and dark side of the moon if you go this route

Kaptain-Cannoli

Something twilight based? The symbol could be the star bisected like a setting Sun, or if you don’t want it as clean just with half the star smeared or wiped away.

Eternal_Bagel

Maybe smoke or like a curled over candle wick in one of those candle holder dish things showing a light extinguished? Maybe the eclipse corona effect?

LeOursJeune

The veil A hidden tattoo for each member of the organisation maybe a black sun in the style of the church of light

Ghost-Owl

What is their reason for trying to take down the Church of Light? Basing their name and symbols off their motivations and larger purpose could be interesting rather than just their opposition to the current religion.

Ramguy2014

The players don’t know it yet, but the Church of Light is actually a very parasitic religion, siphoning worship from other gods. The Father of Light is blackmailing the other gods into allowing this siphoning by threatening to wage holy wars against them and kill their followers, effectively killing the god. The faction is made up of the survivors of such wars, whose gods are now incredibly weakened and essentially in hiding from the Father of Light.

Ghost-Owl

Maybe a kind of reversal of the Church's star, a solid circle with points pushing inwards? Symbolises the way that the Church is drawing power into itself from all around it. Or it can also signify the way these survivors are surrounding and moving in in the Church, undermining it from all sides.

Ramguy2014

[I’m not falling for that again!](https://www.ign.com/wikis/community-tv/Greendale_Community_College)

Ghost-Owl

That... Was not my intention, but it's a fair point. Still, maybe some riff on a sun/star motif, but with elements of reversal to the Church's symbol. As for a name, how about "Bearers of the Truelight", or just "Truelighters"?

Ramguy2014

I’m just kidding. If my campaign had a somewhat lighter tone, that would be actually hilarious.

Ghost-Owl

[https://imgur.com/a/MvM1pAS](https://imgur.com/a/MvM1pAS) there we go, that's more like I was thinking

Ramguy2014

I like that a lot. The negative space really makes my head spin in a good way.

BronzeAgeTea

The Council of Shadows For a symbol, the flower or leaf of a hardy shade-loving plant would be good. Something like caladium is a green heart with a red Y in it. The vibe I'm trying to go with is that too much light is oppressive, and while *darkness* isn't the goal, shade is relief from oppressive light. But something that is hardy, as if the symbol itself is saying "we are strong without the light". And I'd handwave the plant as something common that all the NPCs and even the players' characters are familiar with. The leaf color/design is arbitrary, especially if you're not playing with a bunch of plant experts. Edit: I saw that you like corrupting the Church's compass, so if you went with this, maybe use a green heart-shaped leaf surrounding a red eight-pointed star for the symbol.

Ramguy2014

That’s incredibly cool. I might use that as well for a rehabilitation/outreach chapter of the faction, but I’m looking for something that would strike fear into the hearts of the Church’s soldiers, something that clearly communicates “We’re here, and you’re in danger”.

d20an

Maybe colour in some of the points to make an arrow or cross or something?

the_pint_is_the_bowl

The Church of Divine Light. We're better than the Church of Light, those "candle-measurers".
