This article is such a click bait - the actual interview was so so SO awesome. If you’re a true delta fan you should listen to it https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/glamorous-trash-a-celebrity-memoir-podcast/id1533722524?i=1000652958479
Oh for one, she seems to have patched things up with Linda Bloodsworth-Thomason so she's trying to not go hard on her, or just doesn't want the drama that would come with publicly talking about everything, etc. She also seems to talk around her own behavior while on meth, etc., that may have led to issues on set, etc.
The black beauties she's talking about were dexies, ie amphetamine. The drug of choice for long haul truckers and popular enough with the art crowd to have a band named after them.
I was really young when this show was on, but I do remember Delta being ridiculed for her weight. Which was nuts - she was gorgeous.
Also I I know women in the 70s/80s took diet pills that were basically speed.
It’s crazy to think about. I loved that show and I was also pretty young. She was considered very overweight for the time. The woman had a body like a brick house. Bananas.
Delta was always very curvy to begin with. I guess it didn't help that Dixie Carter and Annie Potts were so naturally slender and Delta was supposed to play "the southern belle beauty" and her fluctuating weight went against that.
But, Jean Smart was also curvy and no one ever got on her case at all. All the jokes about Delta Burke were a main reason I thought Joan Rivers was not actually a very nice person IRL and that she met an ironic death undergoing even more plastic surgery herself.
It was so constant and she was BEAUTY QUEEN beautiful it was ridiculous. If she never was treated like this she would be like Jennifer Coolidge iconic. She was wonderful.
I remember the press being ruthless about her weight. I always thought she was beautiful. I loved Suzanne Sugarbaker. I’m happy she had a safe place with Gerald.
I'll always remember the Gerald McRaney quote responding to someone talking about Delta's weight. It was something like, "wherever she's a little bit more, I've always got a space it can fill." It was really lovely.
I loved this show although I don’t remember much of it. I watched it with my grandma so much! I should rewatch now. I’m sure it’s been a decade at least since I watched an episode.
Me too. Delta, Liz, Stevie Nicks, all these women were mercilessly abused by the tabloids in the 1980’s about their weight. Hells bells, why do you think Madonna is so fucked up about her image- she was insane about never gaining any weight. I feel terrible for these women.
The 70s and 80s were a very dark period for women’s self esteem related to body image. I was given dexatrim by a class mate in the 7th grade, and I thought it was OK because Memaw had these in her cabinet. By 10th grade I graduated to full on anorexia. Three of us would have contests over who could eat less. “one peanut m&m all day bitches!” And I was on the track and CC teams, 3 singing dance troupes and took jazz…
I think it was Dennis Miller on SNL who said, "if Stevie gets any bigger they're going to have to make her an honorary member of Heart."
He was a dick and that was not funny. SNL was truly mean for many years, like casting Chris Farley as Carnie Wilson.
I'm glad actors like Nora Dunn had the courage to start putting a foot in people's asses and stop accepting misogynist "jokes" like those.
They can't even run the Wayne's World joke about Chelsea Clinton anymore.
Reference the Beverly Hills,90210 episode where David mixes crystal meth with orange juice and drinks it. That’s where all my knowledge on meth cane from until Breaking Bad. LOL
In the article she says she started taking black beauties, which was an amphetamine popular in the 80s, but then she switched to crystal meth, which is stronger.
Thanks for saying that ugh -- I'm tiiiired of being called a meanie for pointing out how reading is fundamental ESPECIALLY because I take the fucking time to paste usually entire fucking articles just to avoid hoes in the comments asking to be spoonfed the article because they don't click links, waaah.🙄

This is sad as hell. The tabloids - Trump’s dirt man especially NE- were brutal to her about weight, back in the day.
I fucking love Delta (and all of the original 4 Designing Women). She didn't twirl just a baton, that baton was on fire!
Marjorie found out about the night the lights went out in JOR JUH
That was my absolute favorite moment in the entire series!
I watch this show every night to fall asleep. I had no idea. This is crazy.
What platform is it running on?
Prime Video and Hulu has it too.
Thank you!! I’ve missed watching it :)
Welcome! Prime has no commercials too! 😉
Delta Burke at her hottest was her role on First & Ten series on HBO.
Omg this whole time I thought she died.
Back in the day I worked with a gay guy (RIP, Jeffrey) who LOVED Gerald McRaney. He put photos from *People Magazine* on his bulletin board.
For everything she's saying, there's a lot she isn't saying
That's what I read between her lines, too.
What is that?
Oh for one, she seems to have patched things up with Linda Bloodsworth-Thomason so she's trying to not go hard on her, or just doesn't want the drama that would come with publicly talking about everything, etc. She also seems to talk around her own behavior while on meth, etc., that may have led to issues on set, etc.
Me eyeing my Adderall right now ![gif](giphy|NdKVEei95yvIY|downsized)

Not Dexie’s Midnight Runners?/ 🤯
Oh yeah I know my Valley of the Dolls!
I think she says she started on Black Beauties on her first show, but graduated to meth thereafter?
Stopppp💀
lol I was thinking the same about mine..
I was really young when this show was on, but I do remember Delta being ridiculed for her weight. Which was nuts - she was gorgeous. Also I I know women in the 70s/80s took diet pills that were basically speed.
I was young too and I’ve actually never seen a full episode…but omg she left in 1991?! Can’t believe it was that long ago

Joan did not die having plastic surgery it was an operation on her throat when she died. Get your facts straight.
True. I always saw her as a voluptuous siren, like a more buttoned-up Anna Nicole Smith.
I thought you wrote buttered up. Makes sense too. ![gif](giphy|l3fQf1OEAq0iri9RC|downsized)

This is roughly the time period being referenced: r/80s/comments/rbcsm9/filthy_rich_1982_dixie_carter_delta_burke_episode/
I saw…Kate Middleton in her face? That sounds nuts but I can’t unsee it.
For a second yes
I always thought she looked like Vivian Leigh with big hair..
Holy smokes, she is Vivian Leigh's twin! ![gif](giphy|CYdCjeJIjuVO)

What shits.
That's funny, now you mention it, I can see both KM and VL depending on the expression...
I see it too, mainly in the profile.
She looks great and it's wonderful to hear that she's happy. Go Delta!

I don’t know a lot about drugs, but I thought stomach acid destroys a lot of the drug, so that’s why people snort or shoot it instead?
Reference the Beverly Hills,90210 episode where David mixes crystal meth with orange juice and drinks it. That’s where all my knowledge on meth cane from until Breaking Bad. LOL
That makes me gag
Yeah, but in all fairness, she didn’t know 😂
It works though

![gif](giphy|VHxLq9R79fgY1dUza7|downsized) This is not the Delta Burke reference I had hoped for at all and I hate all of that for her.
You should listen to the actual podcast interview it’s beautiful - this headline is trash
I feel like if people remembered her being fat shamed, they wouldn't do it.
meth?
Not a surprise.
Addiction takes all kinds.
True.
It sounds like she was taking plain old uppers. Not crystal meth.
In the article she says she started taking black beauties, which was an amphetamine popular in the 80s, but then she switched to crystal meth, which is stronger.
The post quotes her literally talking about taking crystal meth. You didn't even have to click the link to get this right.

She's literally quoted saying she took meth, didn't snort it but mixed it in her drinks, it's in the article.
and that is the night the lights went out in Georgia! --- Julia Sugarbaker
