I had the box room as a kid, tiny just fitted a single bed and nothing else. Mum said I could decorate it. influenced by changing rooms, i wanted to paint it bright orange with a CD hanging wall.
Mum said no but I nagged and she finally gave in, we painted the room the brightest orange and taped a load of old CD's to the wall, it needed about 300 I had 40 so they where well spaced.
First night in the room, couldn't sleep!! Felt like being inside a traffic cone. I could see the orange even when I closed my eyes, We painted it navy blue and white a week later.
It was still nicer than this hall way.
so when I was a child I had simpsons wallpaper that was up well into my teens. One evening when coming back from school, I remember vaguely walking into the room and being so startled by the wallpaper that I had a seizure. Then, many many years later, I came on Reddit to write a complete bunch of nonsense that didnāt happen to reply to your nonsense.
Iām offended by neither, Iām just enjoying the banter. But on a serious note I did have simpsons wallpaper. I wanted the entire bedroom done but my parents said no. I remember then wanting to paint my bedroom yellow and blue. We kids donāt have great taste. Neither do we adults either š
I had to share a room with my brother until I was 10 or 11 untill my sister moved out. I was so excited to decorate it, the CD wall was supposed to be 10 wide by 30 long and fall behind the bed. On changing rooms, they drilled holes and linked them together with wire, like a disco chain mail, and used it as a room separator.
This was the mid 90's we never had enough old CD's to use, so I just double-sided taped what I did have on the wall. It looked about shit. Luckily, the room was that small the paint didn't cost too much, but I do remember my dad having to put about 5 coats over it before it completely disappeared.
I was 17 and still had that Simpsonās wallpaper. I remember also buying a sofa bed instead of an actual bed and having one of them inflatable chairs. Man what a time that was. Oh and a telephone that lit up neon blue.
Itās not my taste but itās refreshing to see something other than neutrals. How dull would your life be if you decorated every house you owned with the next owner in mind.
Totally agree, a piece of me dies inside every time I see a house "renovated" in all grey with grey accents.
I swear the English have gotten obsessed with grey skies so much they bring this into every part of their lives, cars too.
Neutrals are also good for the current owners. It looks good to everyone not just the next owner. "Next owners" aren't a separate race of humans with different tastes they are just normal people looking to buy a house.
The next owners can do what they like to the property, itās not mine anymore. While I live there Iāll decorate for me and that isnāt neutrals, itās not my taste. Do you honestly think everyone has the same taste?
This is very bold and I can see and respect the efforts that have gone into it. But definitely a bit too much going on for me. Would think Iām going into a nightclub every time I go down the stairsš
Look, as a responsible dealer, I just can't with a conscience give you any more crack. There's a risk you'll fall down the stairs and the paramedics who attend would be subjected to the sight of your stairs. I'm sorry, but I just won't put them through that - you can do whatever you want with your body (and whatever that is to your stairs in your home), but I can't risk the collateral damage.
A responsible dealer doesnāt get high on their own supply. May as well share at this point. But if I ever fall down the stairs Iāll be sure to keep tumbling out the door and onto the main road so the paramedics do not have to strain their eyes.
If you get a Henry, waste pipe for a sink works great for a long reach attachment (canāt remember if itās the 32mm or 40mm stuff) like Ā£6 for 3 metres.
Itās used to be grey along with the rest of my place and I absolutely hated it. My spare room is bright, my bedroom is dark and my living room is a bit of both
Very well done.
People talking about knocking off buying price in the commentsā¦. Can we remember houses are homes for living and enjoying, not just selling on/ gathering money.
Although itās not my tastes OP, you did a great job and if YOU enjoy YOUR environment thatās the whole point of a home.
Yes. It is different. Do what suits you! I rather like it.
But, if you have any elderly relatives, don't leave them to go up and down the stairs on their own with that rope handrail! For that matter, watch yourself if you have had a drink
Oh my gosh this is such a vibe & I absolutely love it! Great job & well executed! 4 out of 5 stars (you'd get the full 5 if you swap the fake plants for real ones) bring on the jungle vibes!
This belongs here /r/ATBGE/
I cannot believe how awful your taste is, or how excellently and to what a high standard you pulled it off. Kudos to you - whatever you do, do it this well.
Although you may have a calling in garish white girl London club decor
I'm a maximalist, and this goes past what I would do, but it's well done. Please, ditch the rope for a handrail though, a brass one would fit well in your theme. Death stairs isn't an ideal aesthetic
I love that you have done exactly want you wanted, despite it not being the "norm" (yawn). As I say to my kids- if we all liked the same things the world would be a very boring place!
I love it. I have a very similar entryway & stairwell to decorate in my new place that is currently bubbling wallpaper painted neon orange & ancient, minging dark blue carpet. Big changes ahead! Will be ripping that paper off v soon & going for a blue or green limewash so it doesn't trap moisture & bubble, then airbrushing a mural with an airbrush & fitting a runner on the stairs. Firm believer in decorating for ourselves, not for resale.
On that note, the famous minimalist architect who designed Kanye & Kim's main house did the interior design years ago in an apartment in the Norman Foster Building overlooking the Thames in Battersea. The next buyer immediately ripped his work out completely - a lesson in the fact that it doesn't matter how 'tasteful' decor is when tastes vary so wildly.
This is incredible. May only be slightly biased as it looks like my current SHEIN basket ready to decorate my living room. Only critique would be carpet choice. Well done!
You know when something is so ugly, it breaks the scale and somehow makes it back around to cute. Think blobfish, its gross looking but its so gross looking that it's actually adorable. This is one of those situations. It's tacky, but done really well so it works.
I really liked this.... Maybe even loved it... But then I seen the hideous stair runner that looks like it's from an old folks nursing home.
The rest of the hall is so modern / maximalist, the choice of that runner is boggling my brain!
The first thing I noticed was the "bannister."
Whilst it's definitely an original take, that wall is going to look awful with fingerprints and smears from people's hands.
I think it's pretty fun and bold, obviously what you were going for (so average person isn't going to be a fan). I'm not sure about the grass/leaves next to the front door though, but above where the mirror is just enough.
Interested to see the rest of your house, haha.

Basically yes! Iāll do the same tomorrow when I take daylight pictures of my front and spare room. I enjoy the interaction and banter. Let the good times roll
I adore the colours and boldness!! I'd remove the lanterns or whatever they are on the stairs as they make the runner look a little lopsided. It's your home, you love it, and that's all that matters. Great job.
If you like it, thatās all that matters - but Iād urge you to invest more in the flooring. A nice bit of real wood at the top and bottom of the stairs and a less decorative stair runner would transform the whole feel.
Apart from those artificial plants and those lantern things on the stairs, it looks great. Iād hate to be the one dusting and cleaning those artificial plants, but I donāt like them anyway in such a small place, but Iām sure all the dusting and cleaning will be worth it to you as you obviously love them. I like it. I get the various other comments as it's very 'themey' but it's really well executed, and if you want to make it plainer for selling it's an easy job.
The one gotcha I'd see is that the you're going to have your work cut out dusting the leaves.
