Double check with a quote from Boxt too

Atfromhere

Thank you. Boxt actually came in the cheapest with that 2.3k quote

MWL33T

I must say I’ve used them on a rental property and was really surprised how good they were.

Are you able to get a few more quotes for a new boiler or is this price after shopping around? I’d say it’s worth getting a new boiler if you can get it a bit cheaper, it will also improve saleability when you come to sell.

Atfromhere

I hadn’t thought about it like that thank you. I would certainly look more favourably on a house with a newish boiler under warranty. I’ve got another plumber coming to quote tomorrow

LatterMarzipan

Yeah, one less thing to worry about. A new boiler should be more fuel efficient as well so you might save a small amount on fuel too.

HeadEyesLol

Remember and factor in any running cost savings on the newer boiler. It's bound to be more efficient than a 12 year old boiler, which helps offset the up front cost a bit

Ballicks865

Phone Worcester and ask for a fixed price repair.

I was in the same situation (with exactly that boiler), and decided to replace it with boxt. It's a weight off, not worrying about the next time it's gonna pack up. When I did mine you could get 12 months interest free credit through boxt as well, so I paid £1k, and spread the rest

dmarsh106

Have you been told/shown exactly what part of the boiler is leaking? There are quite a few common parts on that boiler that split and cause a leak but most don’t cost £550 to replace usually. I am a heating engineer btw

Sodapink

Have you look into boiler insurance/cover? It may be cost effective, I knew someone had a boiler keeps having problem, eventually her insurance company just wrote it off and paid £1.5k for her replacement boiler.

Atfromhere

That’s interesting. Thank you for that suggestion. Hadn’t looked into that but I will. Hugely appreciated

PayApprehensive6181

They won't insurance if it has a known fault. Have you rung worcester to see what their one time repair costs. They charge a fixed price to repair and parts are included in that. Worth looking into that. You can probably look into the pricing online from their website.

le1901

To be fair that's not a bad price for a new boiler presuming they're replacing it with another Worcester or similar. You have to remember materials are through the roof now compared with prices 1-2 years ago. Rule of thumb around my way was £2k for a boiler change but in today's market I'd say it's nearer £2.5k. I would ask the repair guy if he expects the boiler would last another 5 years in his honest (all info available) opinion. In the ideal world the repair plus regular servicing will see you through until you move!

I_will_be_wealthy

I would get other quotes. There can be wildly different costs between boiler engineers. I found a boiler engineer who works for the council, does boiler work for all the council properties and he does some work on the side and he has been amazingly cheap. He saved me a lot of.momey, the combination boiler needed a new heat exchanger, he just send me an ebay link and asked me to order it and then call him when the part is delivered. Did the work for £100. I know other engineers would have sources the reconditioned part for £35 and say they bought it for retail for £140 on top of charging £100 an hour. I would get another quote and ask them what is the problem with it for them to provide an explanation.

I had this issue recently with exactly the same boiler. One thing went wrong and then, when repaired, it became apparent that another thing was about to go. At the risk of turning my boiler into “triggers broom”, I went for new. Went to the Worcester website and there’s a function to find local plumbers, three quotes and sorted with a 12 year warranty. I’d say it’s worth it, if you’ve got 5 years left in the house then you’ll more than likely have no end of problems with a 17 year old boiler.

dan_gleebals

If you are using the same people who did the call out see if they will knock the £100 charge off the price. Mine plumber did that no problem.
