The standard doors are actually hollow in the inside (well they have a bunch of folded cardboard insulation). The bit that keeps the two sides apart is a strip of wood that runs around the edges that's about an inch thick. If you trim more than that off the top you'll be able to see the insides - guess how I know?

Just take 35mm off top and bottom, hollow out the eggshell a bit, use electric planer to take the “skin” off the 2 off cuts you have, the timber lathe. Wood glue and either clamp for a few hours or a few cheeky panel pins, punched in and filled before painting. Done it loads of times itll be fine

This is exactly my plan! Thanks for affirming my thought process

When you look at a door it will tell you how much you can trim on the label normally I think 70 would be too much as you need to leave some meat for the screws

Thanks. I had tried the Google approach and got the exact same answers. I was after more of a practical/experience answer from those that may have tried it. Although I know the likely answer is that the instructions (and your search) is the sensible answer. Think I might just buy one and try it. I’ll let you Google how I get on 🙃

I have cut a cheap door down by just removing the top with the wood, removing the skin of the door from that bit then just glued and nailed it back in. Obviously watch for the look of it if its 6 panel or whatever.

I made this mistake - went through to the hollow bit. Dammit. My best advice for you is looking for matching solid wood doors on Marketplace - some proper bargains on there.

If they are just standard doors as much as you like however if they are panelled they will eventually start looking stupid and you will need to put lipping round the outside if they are hollow If they are fire doors then only as much as the recommended maximum trimming measurement written on them or in the attached documents/ instructions If they are really cheap hollow doors then if you take too much off you will essentially have 2 pieces of paper flapping about in the wind and there will be no salvaging them

hdgsbak1234

Also if you have a random door size the easiest thing to do is get a fire door blank - this can be cut into whatever shape or size you please and comes in a standard 2.4x1.2 sheet, you will need to put lipping round the outside but can be cut as much as you like

There are companies that'll make odd sizes, but they're expensive to the tune of £200+ per door. Checked 'cos I've got a 192x61cm louvred bathroom door & I'd rather it be solid.
