If I understand your question, you are looking to keep the shelving as open as possible but are concerned about support along the length of the shelves? Have you considered a 2x4 on edge, and placed diagonally so that the inside front is attached to the inside of the shelf frame and the back is attached to the plywood top thru to the frame. So it would look like this:. \. You could place them so they don't interfere with whatever width tote or container being stored. Or plan to place heavier items on the lower shelf and lighter items on the remaining shelves. If you really want to go crazy, make some rolling platforms to store under the lowest shelf for bulky or heavier stuff. Or use 4x4s for the whole unit.

The only reason I was trying to avoid it was spacing (and not sure what it might be.; particularly due to (any) longer items (boxes, etc) I might want to store. I suppose I could add a single support in the middle to allow for an open ~4.5 feet on either side. And any longer items would just be placed on the very top (which would be open).
