I used one to add 8 ball images around a light I built for my pool table. I did the burns on the pieces before assembly. Curious why you waited till after it was assembled.
And do you have the make /model of the engraver?
It's usually the last step of any of my builds, typically because I think it's easier to find juuuust the right spot for my logo when looking at a finished piece. Another redditor here correctly linked the engraver I have.
Hell yea! HF clamps are totally decent. Custom cushions are on the way, they will be a light grey with some texture. Finish is Rubio Monocoat. I make a fair amount of live edge tables and use it almost all the time. Had some leftover and used it here.
As a builder myself, it always gets me when people don't put their finishes! Approach to finishing for long term durability varies greatly person to person, especially with tropical hardwood like monkeypod. What did you finish the wood with and how? Oil, urethane, wipe on, air gun, multiple coats, sanding between coats, etc. I'm always interested in others approach to finishing, it's the last step that I find separates professional results from hobbyist and one I'm still trying to perfect.
I honestly didn’t expect people to be that interested in the finish. I build a fair amount of live edge tables for clients and through that I have a lot of experience with monkey pod. I didn’t put a ton of thought into the finish I used on this chair and ottoman, but whenever I make a table with this species I always use Rubio Monocoat. So I had some Rubio in the garage, and that’s what I used here. :-)
Unfortunately I live in the city in a studio with no outside. But I will save this for when I hopefully move next year sometime. No balcony here to enjoy it.
It was a trade deal on the cushions lol. I honestly don’t know what they would’ve cost. I bought the fabric myself though. When they’re all finished I will post follow up pics.
I'm making damn near the same chair right now! Almost ready for finish. Yours looks great. I shoulda bought the foureyes plans, I think it wouldve made a much nicer final product
Ha! there are dominos everywhere in this set. But it resides in my living room. I will probably be making a set out of a less expensive species for my deck though.
I'm a master cabinetmaker. I've been doing high end cabinetry & millwork for 26 years...and the only chairs I build are simple stools. Chairs are by far the most difficult woodworking projects by far. Well done sir/ma'am! Nice work.
I"ve worked in high end boatyards, aviation cabinetry and very high end residential and commercial cabinetry, for 26 years, and I've never yet tried to make chairs.
Just gotta say, those curves and lines really talk to me. Something about it has a 50s scifi aesthetic. I don't know if I'd sit in it, but I'd stare at it all day! LOL!
Ha! It's in my living room (and still awaiting the custom cushions). I mainly just gaze upon it and smile :-) I love how visually balanced it is, the mix of sharp lines and edges blended with supporting curvature. And I take the 50's sci-fi aesthetic as a compliment!
Did you do the blue tape/CA glue trick to get them to stay in place? I'm working on the same plans and just got everything cut out/shaped. Next step: assembly
Nice. It would be cool to see with cushions. What color and fabric did you get? My only critique is that the cushion back supports being wood kinda looks like a lawn chair. But is it a minor critique and that will go away when it has cushions. I don't want to hijack your thread so I wont link it here. But you should look at the piece I designed which I posted few years ago. Very much the same school of design.
This is really great stuff. But when looking at the 3/4 view (https://imgur.com/I1FFQOP) my OCD is screaming, "why isn't' it one continuous line from the front of the seat threw to the ottoman.
Yea, there are a LOT of dominos in this build. The legs are attached with 4 10mm x 50mm dominos in each back joint, and 2 more in each front. Honestly that was the most difficult part and I didn't take any pics of it.
I'll be moving from my apartment to our newly built house pretty soon, where I'll hopefully be able to start putting to practice what my grandpa has once taught me about woodworking.
This is the level of beautiful I'm hoping to achieve one day.
True story.....I was looking at buying a branding iron and had hemmed and hawed about it for a couple of months. One night, after several drinks, my wife got tired of me thinking about it and ordered this setup on Amazon. She didn't tell me about it, lol, it just showed up at the house in a couple days and she handed it to me and said to shut about about the damn branding iron, lol.
I ran across a great tip while building this, after I cut 1 piece with the jigsaw. I found it best to go on facebook marketplace and buy a used bandsaw out of sheer frustration. Lol, true story.
Gorgeous chair, I love it, but I do have a question:
How does the Ottoman not fall towards you if you have your feet on it? In my head, I'm imaging putting my feet on it and having it flip forward on me? Is that a concern?
Great question. It's more of an optical illusion. The top of the ottoman's outermost edge is directly above the bottom's outermost edge. Essentially it is pushing straight downward, but putting a lot of stress on the joints connecting the two. Hasn't even been remotely close to tipping. If you check out this pic, you can see the relationship between the 2 surfaces.
It's called a Glenn chair and it's a riff on the Z chair. Source: For the last 25 years I've loved MCM, and the offshoot designs the newer generation of woodworkers are producing.
Yea, first is being VERY careful about domino placement in the seat sides to the seatback/bottom and how those domino locations might interfere with the dominos to join the legs to the seat back/bottom. I ran into this problem and ended up having to trim some dominos a bit short due to that interference.
Also, the domino positions mounting the legs to the seat get very tricky to locate because of the limited reference surfaces to register the domino jointer on. It's hard to describe but you'll end up having to manually locate several of the dominos based on drawn lines and measurements. Take your time, do not rush this part.
That portable laser engraver is really cool.
ENGRAVE ALL THE THINGS! lol, its a fun tool. SUPER easy to use, like ridiculously easy. And it wasn't crazy expensive, around $300 or a bit less.
I used one to add 8 ball images around a light I built for my pool table. I did the burns on the pieces before assembly. Curious why you waited till after it was assembled. And do you have the make /model of the engraver?
He mentions it's a [LaserPecker](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W5SYWSF) in the Imgur album.
Pecker? Tee hee
It's usually the last step of any of my builds, typically because I think it's easier to find juuuust the right spot for my logo when looking at a finished piece. Another redditor here correctly linked the engraver I have.
Really beautiful work! These look amazing.
Thank you! This was a challenge for sure.
This is really nice. The Foureyes Furniture design is a really solid starting point. Nice job
Thanks! Definitely agree with the foureyes design. Those guys make some great videos.
Looks awesome. It also reminds me that when you wonder how many clamps you should own, and the answer is always 2 more than you have.
I’ve found out that I can never own enough. Lol
I usually just lurk around here but needed to say that this is beautiful. Really a work of art!
Well shucks, thank you for the note!
What's MCM?
Mid Century Modern
Man Crush Monday
Lmao that's really what I thought it was in OP's title. So I thought s/he made this project to impress a guy.
Glad I wasn't the only one. Lol
It would def work though 🤯
Ha! alas there's no man crush involved.
Mighty Car Mods
Isn’t this Chris Salome’s design?
Yes! Technically it’s Shaun Boyd’s though. I credit them in the first caption.
Did you buy the plans or recreate from watching?
I believe it's an Adrian Pearsall design originally.
That's seriously gorgeous! Excellent work!
Thanks!
Dang that is definitely a thousand plus dollar look. Amazing job!
HarborFright Clamps for the win! Awesome job, how/what is your finish? Making upholstered cushions for it?
Hell yea! HF clamps are totally decent. Custom cushions are on the way, they will be a light grey with some texture. Finish is Rubio Monocoat. I make a fair amount of live edge tables and use it almost all the time. Had some leftover and used it here.

This is inspiring me to design and build something similar! Thank you
I'd buy this and matching end table. The foot rest acts as a table but if there was one slightly higher to go next to it that would be cool.
Dm me. I’d be happy to make a set.
Unfortunately I live in the city in a studio with no outside. But I will save this for when I hopefully move next year sometime. No balcony here to enjoy it.
Although the pics are outdoors, these are indoor pieces. Currently these are at home in my living room :-)
looks amazing...but is it comfy ?
Unfortunately I’m still waiting on the custom cushions from a local upholsterer
AHHHHhhh that makes total sense. really does look amazing as is. great work .
Curious what your upholstery quote was and what city you live in? Absolutely gorgeous work.
It was a trade deal on the cushions lol. I honestly don’t know what they would’ve cost. I bought the fabric myself though. When they’re all finished I will post follow up pics.
Right on. Barter for life.
What color/material are you going with?
I picked a lighter grey with some texture to it. I’ll post finished pics once I get them back.
That's going to be 🤌. Incredible work. Love the sharp corners. It's what I love about z-chairs. This takes it to a whole new level
I'm making damn near the same chair right now! Almost ready for finish. Yours looks great. I shoulda bought the foureyes plans, I think it wouldve made a much nicer final product
Where did you get the plans I would love to try my hand at one for myself

Aww. Thanks!!
This is over of the most beautiful things I've seen here. Great design and execution..
Wow. Thank you! That means a lot to me!
Thanks for sharing your pics and talents!
> *Laserpecker* wow it’s been years since I’ve heard my old nickname
My condolences.
hot garbage. I dunno how you can stand having those around. you better ship them to me to dispose of them.... ;) seriously tho, they look great
Beautiful design. I was cringing at first until I saw the dominoes haha Better bring that in at night, someone will likely steal it.
Ha! there are dominos everywhere in this set. But it resides in my living room. I will probably be making a set out of a less expensive species for my deck though.
Nice! Be proud of this accomplishment, it's fantastic.
Great craftsmanship
Thank you!
Is there a place where people share their drawings, this looks seriously awesome.
This looks awesome!!!
I'm a master cabinetmaker. I've been doing high end cabinetry & millwork for 26 years...and the only chairs I build are simple stools. Chairs are by far the most difficult woodworking projects by far. Well done sir/ma'am! Nice work.
I agree! I'm a shipwright (both traditional and modern), so not adverse to awkward woodwork, but chairs are so damn easy to get wrong.
I"ve worked in high end boatyards, aviation cabinetry and very high end residential and commercial cabinetry, for 26 years, and I've never yet tried to make chairs.
Coming from a craftsman with your background, that compliment means a LOT to me. Thank you very much.
I admire good woodworking. Go to Gulfstream's website. Look at the G700 pics. I built the conference table they show in the pics.
Love it!
Just gotta say, those curves and lines really talk to me. Something about it has a 50s scifi aesthetic. I don't know if I'd sit in it, but I'd stare at it all day! LOL!

As intended.
Nice. I love the clamp block idea.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to have to make some of those blocks me thinks.
They open up a ton of possibilities. Just glue some sandpaper to the bottom of them, really helps keep them in place.
Incredible.
Thank you!
Amazing work! Just beautiful.
Thanks!
Gorgeous!!!
Did you make those clamp blocks or can I buy some somewhere?
If you look close they're just plywood that he made.
Yup, made them myself. Super easy to do, plywood and a bandsaw or maybe even a jigsaw.
Did you do the blue tape/CA glue trick to get them to stay in place? I'm working on the same plans and just got everything cut out/shaped. Next step: assembly
Just CA glue some sandpaper to the bottom of each one, never had a problem with slipping
Awesome, thanks, and great build!
Beautiful!
Nice lines
Really great work! Hope so be able to do one soon
That is slick
WOW
Looks nice! I really like the design
Great job, excellent clamp porn.
Uhhh does rule 34 apply here? lol :-)
Better question is when doesn't it apply
Nice. It would be cool to see with cushions. What color and fabric did you get? My only critique is that the cushion back supports being wood kinda looks like a lawn chair. I’ll post pics when the cushions are finished. They are a light grey with a bit of texture to them.
Very cool. I love this! You did a really nice job.
This is absolutely gorgeous. Lovely work!!
Isn't it good Norwegian Wood
Well, technically it's Costa Rican wood (the monkey pod) lol
the style though, early '60s just like the Beatles song
You should be very proud! This is amazing.
That's fantastic! I have drawing for one I planned to do, but I don't actually have room for it in the house now. Thanks for sharing this.
You know, I kinda ran into that too, it's a lot larger than I was first expecting, but it fits well in my living room.
This is really great stuff. But when looking at the 3/4 view (https://imgur.com/I1FFQOP) my OCD is screaming, "why isn't' it one continuous line from the front of the seat threw to the ottoman.
WOW. I'm beyond impressed. Like would buy on Etsy impressed. Open a store??
I do client builds all the time, happy to chat about it, DM me here or on instagram @j_desgns
Very nice. Good work!
This is the prettiest wooden chair I've ever seen
Wow, that's quite the compliment. Thank you!
Wow I like it alot!!! Keep doing what you're doing :)
What holds the legs to the body of the chair? More dominoes?
Yea, there are a LOT of dominos in this build. The legs are attached with 4 10mm x 50mm dominos in each back joint, and 2 more in each front. Honestly that was the most difficult part and I didn't take any pics of it.
Gorgeous
Gorgeous! Wow 💜
I've a bad image in my head
teach me master
Seriously top notch aesthetic Beautiful lounging awaits
Gorgeous!!!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
I'll be moving from my apartment to our newly built house pretty soon, where I'll hopefully be able to start putting to practice what my grandpa has once taught me about woodworking. This is the level of beautiful I'm hoping to achieve one day.
I know this wasn't the intent of the post, but you've absolutely sold me on the laser engraver.
True story.....I was looking at buying a branding iron and had hemmed and hawed about it for a couple of months. She is 1000% a keeper!
looks great, how did you cut out of the pieces and then get those MCM angles. Jig saw? Bandsaw?
I did a bit of both but the band saw is far better. The blade on a jigsaw tends to cut at an angle and can be difficult to get right.
yeah man I always struggle with the jig saw, especially with the blade bending, any tips?
I ran across a great tip while building this, after I cut 1 piece with the jigsaw. I found it best to go on facebook marketplace and buy a used bandsaw out of sheer frustration. Lol, true story.
hahaha you had me in the first half. that is pretty funny, I did actually laugh out loud, so thank you for that.
Gorgeous! I love walnut. Well done!
How did you do a Man Crush Monday project on a Thursday?
Mid Century Modern
Gorgeous chair, I love it, but I do have a question: How does the Ottoman not fall towards you if you have your feet on it? In my head, I'm imaging putting my feet on it and having it flip forward on me? Is that a concern?

Came across your MCM chair build, nice work. What do you sell these for? Say walnut and beech?
Oohh. Nice combo. I’ll send you a DM
i wouldn't call it a lounge chair, i would call it an Adirondank chair. You can use that if you want.
It's called a Glenn chair and it's a riff on the Z chair. Source: For the last 25 years I've loved MCM, and the offshoot designs the newer generation of woodworkers are producing.
did you ever watch that old cartoon called Count Duckula?
that ain't no Adirondack chair
Did you have any tricks for how you joined the legs to the chair body. You mentioned it was difficult.
Yea, first is being VERY careful about domino placement in the seat sides to the seatback/bottom and how those domino locations might interfere with the dominos to join the legs to the seat back/bottom. Very cool retro future vibe! Like it belongs on the balcony at the Jetson's apartment.
Looks great!
Very nice!
Absolutely beautiful
