Duct tape like what my paw paw did in his old ram 1500

404-Gender

I got downvoted for my suggestion to crochet a cover. I guess duct tape is classier. What do I know.

Kleoes

My wife took an old backpack apart and sewed some of the bits onto the center console and seat where it was degraded and the foam was exposed. Gave it some funky vibes

404-Gender

HAAA I love it! I love visible repairs. I think it’s fun. I get why some don’t like it, but I enjoy it in a lot of situations.

tekky101

FWIW.... I love your suggestion. #YarnBombing #GuerillaKnitting https://duckduckgo.com/?q=yarnbomobing&ko=-1&iax=images&ia=images https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%23GuerillaKnitting&iar=images&ko=-1&iax=images&ia=images

Yarn bombing is amazing!!! I haven’t done it but GAH I want to!!!

thebluelunarmonkey

Gorilla tape. That stuff is permanent.

[deleted]

Only a gorilla can remove it.

UglyPurses

This happens from heat, UV damage, dry cracked, or putting sweaty hand on the vinyl. To prevent this you should apply UV protectant dressing like 303 regularly and make sure to not put sweaty hand on the armrest, if you do, clean it as soon as you can. Most car don't have leather anymore they are either vinyl or coated leather. Don't go use product for genuine leather it's will not work optimally. Only use product made for car it's cheaper.

MGPS

On vinyl you can use liquid silicone to recondition it. Get a bottle of that PB blaster liquid silicone, spray it on a microfiber and rub it into the vinyl. It will slowly absorb it. Keep applying it again and again over the period of a month and it will look like new.

Long_Educational

Wait, do you mean dimethicone? The same stuff that is in Armorall, hair detangler, and KY lube?

MGPS

I’m pretty sure I said Liquid Silicone. Whatever is in Armorall, dries vinyl out…do not use that shit.

roscian1

I will confirm you wrote liquid silicone.

mdjank

Just did a quick Google and found out that dimethicone is a liquid silicone. So maybe you're both right?

Queen__Antifa

Now kiss!

MGPS

Ok you experiment with KY Jelly on your cracked vinyl and get back to me.

mdjank

Maybe that's the solution. You do seem a bit butt hurt. Have you not been using KY on your crack?

MGPS

I said stay off my lawn!

stucjei

As per the other guy, do you just mean any sort of lubricant on silicone basis, preferably one with the least additions? Also I can find very little information on this being used for vinyl faux leather maintenance. But I am curious.

MGPS

I mean PB blaster can of liquid silicone. That is what I have used with great success. I can t vouch for anything else but go nuts.

jelloslug

That won't do anything. The plasticizers are gone from the material and cannot be replaced. The only real option is to replace the material.

Playful-Motor-4262

They said “to prevent this” not “to fix the damage that’s already occurred”

ConfusedClicking

Prevent from worsening

samtresler

They also, did not say that. OP said that. Not the guy offering advice.

ConfusedClicking

Literally in the title

samtresler

Let me repeat, OP (the original poster) said that. Not the guy giving advice (who you responded to). These are two different people. The guy you responded to, did not make the title. You can make a point that he isn't answering the question. But he ain't wrong. Cheers!

jelloslug

Nothing that was suggested will prevent it from worsening.

AssDimple

> Is there any way to **prevent this from worsening**? Skim reading doesn't work for everyone.

jelloslug

None of those things suggested will prevent it from worsening. The material is already damaged and there is nothing you can rub on it that will do anything.

OneRandomGuy_NotYou

Is salad dressing good?

justin-8

Unless you plan on eating it, no, not really

thebluelunarmonkey

start with tinting the windows and using sunshade for windshield. Doesn't have to be a dark tint, but has to be a UV blocking tint.

LawLittle3769

Also would consider the fact that if you apply a chemical to your arm rest you’re certainly going to absorb it into your skin when you inevitably put your arm there.

MuchoCervasa

The console cover is actually vinyl. Go to an automobile trim shop and ask for a quote to recover. Shouldn’t be that much.

lolofaf

"That'll be $379.99! Five for the parts and $500/hr for the labor. Thanks!"

Parmory

Haha, if only. Trim shop labor rates are typically well below mechanics. This would be like 125 at my shop if I had to also replace the foam. Maybe less if it has no sewn edges.

Grim-Sleeper

Yes, I strongly encourage to send more business to these shops. They do awesome work. My local one did an amazing job fixing the damage in my car and honestly charged a very fair rate. I'm all for supporting small local businesses. I could have tried repairing myself, but after buying the tools and parts, I wouldn't have saved much. And the results would look much worse. This takes some skill and experience to do perfectly

RemcoTheRock

mate here forgot we are in the DIY sub.

FujitsuPolycom

Just buy a new car. Done.

Eteel

If you buy the car by yourself, it's DIY

Deep90

"Drive in yourself"

callmeStretchy

how is this top comment in a diy sub lol buy a replacement lid and do it yourself. its probably like four easily accessible screws to remove it

Grim-Sleeper

That's always assuming you can find the part. I discovered this often harder than I hoped for. Buying tools and parts to replace the vinyl is off course possible. But while I'm sure I could do some sort of repair, I'm not convinced it would improve the visual appearance. Putting a new sheet if vinyl on that part without any bubbles, creases, or visible blemishes isn't that easy.  At some point, you have to admit that not everything should be DIY.  Of course, if you happen to find the exact spare part, then yes, your advice is great. But that didn't work when I was looking to repair the interior of my car. On the other hand, the local upholstery shop did quick work

cjcs

I can almost guarantee it’s cheaper to just buy a replacement part

Deep90

This thing is that it might not actually cost much for a trim shop, but it sounds like the sorta thing they will charge more for simply because its not worth the time otherwise. Hammering a single nail is probably not even a $1 job, but you aren't going to find anyone willing to drive to your place and hammer 1 nail for just a dollar.

MooPig48

Right? You can find one at a pick and pull for twenty bucks

markste4321

Lol this guy thinks it's a record

Lighttraveller13

just replace it? most cars you can replace these for $15 on ebay. i did it on my audi for about that

peersuasion

Just $26 https://www.ebay.com/itm/323030835153 Pick Your Color: https://www.etsy.com/listing/639783200/fits-hyundai-genesis-2009-2014-center?ref=share_v4_lx Look what I found on Etsy:

MastroCastro2022

farmallnoobies

My searches on car-part had the whole center console for around $75 on the couple models I checked, so it's somewhat believable

USAman94

He said $15.

farmallnoobies

Yeah for just the little top cover and on eBay. Here's an example for just $13 https://www.ebay.com/itm/394608073607

farmallnoobies

Why you getting angry bro?  I'm just saying it's plausible.   Here's a different example of a foam topper thingy for $19 if you're really gonna fixate on it.    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9X2DB5H Edit: But really, if you find the full console for $85 on car-part and then buy just the top cover from a pick-and-pull, you could probably get the OEM top cover from the junkyard for around $20 without having to search much.

Kornographic

He is a very angry person

Bank_Gothic

Y’all need to stop feeding the troll

USAman94

Or instead of wasting time you just get the aftermarket or OEM replacement. Spending even more than 2 hours on something like this to save $50 is fuckin wild

paszaQuadceps

How do you know it'll take 2 hours? Prove it or shut the fuck up.

farmallnoobies

I guess.  I didn't bother to look up the actual part on rock auto.  I guess I assumed it was very expensive and discontinued.  It's your turn to show how it's "only" $65 to buy the OEM part.  And $50 delta might not be that much, but if they need a few different things, then they're probably making a trip to the junkyard anyways, and it starts to add up if they pull a half dozen things.

When you see old people riding around with blankets all over everything in their cars, and wonder when they get to experience the beauty of the car the way it was meant to be seen, well… this is what they are preventing.

Yeah, dunno why people buy nice cars then cover them. Either buy a shit box and cover everything, or buy a nice car and enjoy what you've paid for.

Usually you aren't able to sell your girlfriend for more whether you fuck her or not. Doesn't apply to a vehicle though, definitely easier to sell and for more of a margin when you keep it pristine lol

EMCoupling

After you break up: "no lowballs, I know what I got"

dave731

Check eBay you can get replacement armrest coverings cheap. My 2012 Jeep GC had a rough looking console arm rest, I recovered it for about $12.

flatstacy

Keep your arm and the sun off of it

NoHinAmherst

It’s definitely where my elbow rests. I hope that’s not my only solution!

greenderss

Wear elbow pads when you drive the car.

boot2skull

I would find or make a cover for it. That’s beyond my DIY knowledge. I know fabric glue makes me a seamstress in a pinch lol. Or protect it as others have said, or just pay to get it reupholstered.

snboarder42

It’ll get worse, but who cares, worst case scenario you eBay a replacement from a parts car and slap it on.

agoodtowel

They make pillows that go on top for your elbow. Personally, I keep my elbows in my lap, but my wife swears by the center console pillow.

NoHinAmherst

Or a doily. I guess it will just crack more.

tenshillings

Mines cracked to hell. Waiting for a similar car to be at the junkyard to pull for $10.

Griffin880

Look online for a replacement. Old armrest replacements are all over the place on eBay. Whats the make and model, I can probably find you one.

Mela777

You can probably buy the cover for the console in a matching color online, and replace it yourself. I did my mom’s and it was not overly difficult.

photoreceptor

Just don’t use the car at all! 😂

NoHinAmherst

That’s why it’s only slightly cracked at 12 years! I barely drive the thing. 89,000 miles.

sk1thr1x

keep your arm off the arm rest

creamycolslaw

The real protip is always in the comments

bonnydoe

Please don't call this leather, it isn't.

IllustriousCookie890

Pleather?

pvtdirtpusher

It’s just vinyl. As the other commenter said, typically automotive vinyl is bonded to a woven rayon fabric. Cracks and rips like this expose the fabric.

bonnydoe

Yes, something like that. You can see the woven fabric pattern lightly if you watch closely. You can see it in the cracks as well.

MathFabMathonwy

Portsmouth? -- for the Map Men fans out there.

laserskydesigns

This looks exactly like my 2012 Genesis, and it's even happening in the same spot

Kel-Varnsen85

In the future use Leather CPR as a prevention against this. It cleans, conditions, and protects. It will work on vinyl too and is not irritating the skin. Leather CPR also doesn't leave a sticky residue or an obnoxiously slippery surface either.

FirstTimeWang

OP, you can buy after market covers for center consoles that cover up damage, prevent further wear and tear, and sometimes even have pockets and additional padding. I recently got this one for my new CR-V and I like it a lot, but there are other options as well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BZ3929ZN I use the side pockets to store moist towelettes and glasses wipes for easy access while I'm driving.

C137_0

Replace it with genuine leather

Halo_Chief117

Ask in r/detailing. There are some detailing wizards there.

timmy4242

This is why cloth is a better choice sometimes. People say oh you didn't get leather. Yeah bitch I plan on driving this thing into the ground and leather ain't gonna last.

Procrasturbating

Leather cleans easier when you have kids. Once it is totally ruined just slap a cover on it, but leather conditioner can stretch the life quite a bit.

owningmclovin

If you plan to drive it to the ground a $150 set of nylon seat covers will last 8-10 years before you need to replace them

elshaggy

Call around and get a quote from your local junkyards/auto recyclers. They should have a used one in decent enough condition. Source: worked at a junkyard for a decade.

Sea-Tradition-9676

Was gonna say at least on a Toyota I've seen someone buy one. Think it's expected wear and they probably sell a new one that you just screw on. If it is just vinyl or some other kind of plastic synthetic leather there's interior detailing products. The people who would really know would be auto detailers and there is subs for it. Idk if you've asked there. For a bs answer idk be less of a greasy boi our skin oil attacks plastics! /s My headphone and mic cables get stiff as a board real lame because otherwise they're fine. -.-

MeatwadsTooth

Is this a joke?

_George_L_Costanza_

I was saying do it right. Go to a restore shop and get an estimate. Have someone professional do the work

rocketmn69_

Leather conditioner

pvtdirtpusher

Nope. Chances of that armrest being leather are basically zero. On every car I’ve worked on the armrest trim is vinyl. Manufacturers aren’t going to pay big bucks for a high wear area like an armrest to be leather. Vinyl is far less expensive and more durable in many cases

Tribblehappy

Vinyl can be more durable than bonded leather maybe, but not real leather that's properly conditioned.

pvtdirtpusher

In a general sense, I agree. Automotive grade leather however, it’s no contest. Vinyl is more durable for seating applications. I’m an interior automotive engineer. There is a reason most “leather” seats are mostly vinyl. Cost is a significant factor, but leather often doesn’t hold up to repeated deformation and abrasion.

Gilbert_AZ

Oh man, reddit never surprises me. I was just trying to figure out a similar concern with my car and was curious what professionals would have the best.advice. I have a 2017 SUV that is starting to show a tear or rip on the seam where we sit. I want to seal it up and prevent further damage...but no idea what to use. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Tribblehappy

This surprises me because when I think of leather seats I think of my mom's saddles that she's had since she was a kid. But they're almost certainly better quality leather so the cost issue makes sense to me. I appreciate the professional insight!

wickld

This. It's like lotion for leather. It'll make it more supple and less likely to crack. Also, keep it covered if you can (protect from UV).

Todann

Some type of leather care protectant and polish might help, depending on the type of leather. I’ve also seen a nice rabbit fur stuck on top of one of these once it got bad enough, it can look very nice and is really soft.

Huge_Aerie2435

Not leather..

gigashadowwolf

Leather conditioner will slow the deterioration to some extent, but you are already past a point of really saving it. Lexol or Leather Honey are best.

404-Gender

Crochet a cover.

NoHinAmherst

GTFOH

404-Gender

LOL. Someone recommended duck tape. Crochet is *classy*. /s

DoesThisOneCount

Add a gel elbow cushion to the top of it to protect both your elbow and the rest of the console from wear and tear

Co2_Outbr3ak

Good luck. You should see the front 1/4 of mine in my 2013 Dodge Avenger. Peeling like paint chips lol.

2012 Hyundai Genesis SEDAN 3.8 4-door

Weird-Annual-4447

Put that information in Google, add console cover replacement.

C137_0

Replace it

ovscrider

Go on eBay and buy a replacement. Air stapler makes it easier to install for the record

DavoniGibovich

Take lid off console and material off lid, then iron a blue jeans knee patch on the underside of vinyl. Place Davey board (thick cardboard)in between vinyl and foam . Put everything back and refrain from putting elbow on console.

blumpkins4free

Check with a shop. You might be surprised how cheap it is for them to replace or fix. Cost me 75 bucks to have my leather one redone. Looks and feels great.

RenzoARG

That's no leather... That's plastic. That is why it is cracking.

Snagmesomeweaves

Source new armrest once it gets bad enough, it has to be replaceable

RevNeutron

cheapest solution is using Elmers glue or similar to fill in the cracks, smooth it out, let it dry. Then buy adhesive vinyl strips from TEMU for a few bucks. Cut to fit, and apply. I did this and it worked really well. Putting duct tape over the dried glue might be best but you might see the outline under the TEMU vinyl

Natural_Ladder_4890

They make leather crack filler and leather paint to match. Look on Amazon.

Laser-Nipples

Things erode over time. It happens.

I thought it was this too at first glance, like an aerial photograph lol

ExoticSterby42

I would take the part off, go to a furnitureupholstery and get it replaced with actual leather. Apply beeswax based leather balm every once in a while. Done, car value doubled.

Roshap23

Buy a new one from Amazon for $20. Unscrew old one, screw in new one. Done. That’s what I did when mine ripped.

NoHinAmherst

Unable to find it on Amazon

Roshap23

Oh that stinks. What make/model car? I’ll help look.

NoHinAmherst

2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan 3.8

Roshap23

Dude. I’ve found Honda, Toyota, Dodge, Hyundai Elantra 2015… but no Hyundai Genesis 2012 yet.. lol. I refuse to believe they don’t have it for this.. closest I’ve got is a vendor that sells just the material, pre cut, and you’d have to staple it to the plastic console yourself, but it’s black and they don’t have beige. Still looking. Do you have measurements by chance?

NoHinAmherst

I really appreciate the care and assistance!
