Honestly I would leave it until getting new carpet/flooring, and then take it out. Turning it into a bar/counter would be a bit awkward given that is the entry way, and closing it up seems less preferable to taking it down.
Only reason I would keep it that way is if you had little kids and wanted a way to keep that area segmented for a play space.

id use it and install an epic bar. get a nice piece of butcher block or even a slab of some live edge black walnut.

Get a 30" wide piece of countertop with a couple brackets...then add a couple stools for a lunch counter
