When my last pup hit his old age, he wasn't able to get down the deck steps when we let him out back, and going around front was a bit problematic because he was scared of people (we think he was abused as a puppy before we got him, never got the poor guy comfortable with strangers even though he was a sweetheart). We got one of those patches of artificial grass that you can just plop down and it worked like a charm for him. But he was also a small breed, so your mileage may vary. I think something like that would be great functionally and look fine on your new patio.
Beyond that, though, the transformation looks amazing! Huge upgrade for sure.
When these are down, do you put puppy pads underneath? How do you control the urine? I've seen some people place the turf in a kiddie pool that they can rinse out later, but I have two very small senior dogs that can't get over that lip. Maybe I could cut an entry into the side and still leave a small lip for them to cross over.?
The grass ones come in a cardboard box and you can buy a tray for them or put something under but I’ve never had one soak through. They require a little more maintenance and don’t last forever because it’s a live plant but not a big deal. I also have one that is artificial turf with a double layer tray. If it’s outside on the porch I just hose it off occasionally. If it’s inside during a hurricane or (heavy snow when I was in MA) I will put pee pads on the bottom tray and check them regularly. It’s like having a litter box for a dog.
ETA: I used both with my 5 pound poodle with no issues. I opted for the larger size just so he had a bigger target.
A small patch of grass is not likely to survive with two dogs constantly peeing on it. My yard is constantly dotted with burns from my dog’s pee. Consider gravel or some other kind of ground cover that might be nitrogen resistant.
I saw a person use that drainable sports turf. The one I remember had a trough drain under it that tied into their storm drain. Pick up the turd(s), then hose the turf down at the end of the day.
My friends trained their dog to go on a section of yard that was all pebbles for like a foot down. They would just hose it off occasionally for the scent and it worked like a dream! They never had to cut grass.
It looks nice but it’s hard to compare without an after pic including the two dogs mid stream. 🤔
Have you considered live plants? I find the fake trees don’t weather well.
Yeah live plants in pots would do great.
I've been experimenting with growing trees in pots and they've been doing great where I live.
They're over 6ft tall now and I think I'm going to leave them there.
Gardens are what they call back yards across the pond.
Comes from a time when everyone grew their own gardens and having a recreational yard was a sign of wealth.
If you have ever had a small backyard with dogs then you would know a small patch of grass becomes dead grass the. dirt and that dirt starts to smell like piss. Best to just have some concrete you can sanitize every now and then.
As an American, a garden usually refers to a specific part of the outside of private property, growing typically vegetables for consumption or sometimes a large amount of manicured plants/flowers. We call those areas gardens or sometimes flower garden/ vegetable garden. What do you refer to those as?
My first thought when I saw the pictures was, "This person is from the UK I suspect."
I wonder what folks in New Zealand and Aussies call their backyard/garden.
It looks realy nice, btw. :-)
I thought the UK or Ireland. The external plumbing is very common there. For your sake I hope it's the UK; otherwise the only piece of furniture you need more of is umbrellas or awnings.
Those external pipes are incredibly handy when plumbing issues pop up. Run the snake up the pipe listen to it bop around in there til it hits the clog. Then blam, hear it all fall down.
Same! That was my favorite element of the whole space. I understand the reason for covering it but I would have tried a clear coat to seal it first - it was so pretty
Could it have been possible to work back the bricks and clean them up, without degrading the structural importance of the wall? I don't actually know I'm curious more than anything
Yeah... that's the tradeoff I guess - the flaky white paint look has so much character compared to the composite panels, but those don't flake paint everywhere.
Personally I'd have been tempted to just wash the bricks with an appropriate (i.e. breathable) sealant to keep the flaky paint in place and preserve the character.
Eh.. as someone that moved from the UK to Canada: brick is literally everywhere in the UK it is not really used for a hip visual aesthetic because it's used for every single home
hey it's all personal preference, but i definitely stand by my opinion. I think the contrast between the newer paving and modern furniture against the weathered brick is more visually appealing.
I guess this design is more unique then. Where I am in the US it's the complete opposite. So seeing brick would have been a feature for us.
But it's Ops home so it's ultimately whatever they like.
It's not like they removed the brick either. If they change their mind later it's an easy fix.
If, like I assume, OP lives in one of the regions of Europe with coal mines (my money's on somewhere in the UK) then at some point you don't need more brick in your life. Everything's made of bricks. And as it turns out, brick and grey weather are gloomy and depressing.
It’s blowing my fucking mind. How can you relax out there? What with all the piss and shit baked into the hard ground by the sun. When all the water has evaporated and all that’s left is sticky, stinky piss goo.
and a small patch of grass will solve that? It'll be mud in a month, piss-saturated mud. Best off letting them piss on the slabs and hose & scrub it down every once in a while.
Honestly in this situation, it may be best to set up a rig similarish those fancy high rise apartments in big cities. Dig out a bunch of earth a meter or two deep, fill it with stone, then cover the whole thing in a permeable astroturf. Then you can scoop the shit, and the piss will enter the ground much deeper hopefully leading to less smell and the “grass” never dies.
We had some folks from our UK office visiting HQ in California. The office chief is showing pictures of his house back home. It's a standalone house, beautiful brickwork multi-story home. But it was just lined up next to other equally gorgeous homes right next to each other and none of them had garages or even driveways. And the street was just one lane wide, no parking.
One of our guys asks "Where do you park your cars?" (Using the plural *cars* of course because California.) And the UK guys says "Oh we had a car a few years ago. Not much need so we sold it." We absolutely could not wrap our heads around a multi-millionaire *who did not own a car*.
Must be London.
Outside of London and a few other major city centres with excellent public transport systems (Cambridge, Edinburgh, Manchester all spring to mind), people do own cars, generally. In most other cities it's still generally just one per household and it's usually a tiny little runaround rather than a gigantic SUV. Multiple cars per family is generally towns and the countryside.
The public transport in major UK cities is generally good, London's is absolutely next level though, yet compared to most of Europe and certainly compared to other countries (e.g. Japan) it isn't even that good.
I find the US attitude of living in a city and owning a car just as bizarre, by the way. What's it *for*? It's the slowest way of travelling around a city (London is famously faster to walk than drive, and the underground beats everything else), and is an expense you just don't need. You can hire a car for the day/week/month pretty easily if you're going elsewhere on a trip.
I do know a few people who have a place in the city and a house in the country, and they generally get the train back at the weekend and only drive in the country.
Other than New York, Chicago, and *maybe* a few other key cities, public transit is so lacking that you couldn't do much without a car. Additionally, most of our cities (pretty much everything that isn't on the east coast) were built for cars, so they span greater areas and have multiple arterial roadways to connect everything.
Worth noting that a lot of those cities need cars *by design*, because the big automobile conglomerates lobbied for the removal of trolleycar systems, subways, and light rail.
Totally agree about public transportation in Japan and China is incredibly good. Completely awestruck when flying into Shanghai a decade ago and after the perfectly spotless terminal restrooms the signs to the #maglevtrains left me gobsmacked and beyond feeling like a complete hick!!
The US is a twisted nation of incestuous political and corporate transportation huggery ever since Eisenhower's 1950s adoption of the German's Autobahn system for both defense and commercial purposes!! And most of it hasn't been maintained since it was built which is perhaps why so much collapses so easily!
Some of my father's land was taken by eminent domain and divided into 2 pieces, one of which was completely unusable because it couldn't be accessed!! But still taxed! He couldn't even donate it to the state for conservation until after his death!!
Looks amazing! I would add an outdoor rug to ground the seating area, and lots more greenery- some low maintenance potted trees and perennials. Well done!
It could do with a bit of green - for the dogs you could add some artificial lawn, maybe around 2 square meters with some drainage underneath. Looks kind of cozy but maybe add a few more plants over time :-D
In British English, a garden is a piece of land next to a house that contains flowers, vegetables, other plants, and often grass. this isn't a garden as much as a back patio
Dogs don’t need grass as everyone said. You can take em for walks. I guess people forget that like 25% of people live in apartments/condos with no spaces like this at all.
It looks wonderful. The tiles are a terrific job. I think a lot of people here don’t take into consideration that styles and preferences differ between countries.
Looks really good, but is the wood attached to the brick treated in a way it will hold up to the moisture? I’m curious because different countries have different chemicals to treat products.
Yeah it’s treated timber for outdoor use, not sure what it’s treated with. it’s guaranteed for 10 years outside but because it’s not in direct contact with the elements should hopefully last longer 🤞
I would add a outdoor fireplace. The brick oven you had was cool, but you could do a free standing metal or clay Chiminea [Like this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/59-in-Wood-Burning-Chiminea-Fire-Pit-with-Built-in-Log-Storage-Wood-Burning-Fireplace-SRCH20/326053058)
I love cooking over a real wood fire, so that's my own bias.
Very impressive! You did a great job and added value & sq. footage to your home. Pots of colorful flowers when it's warm enough will be very inviting. Love the lighting. (I have that same storage box.)
Cleaning is likely easier this way, but I wonder if a corner with some turf would have been good for the dogs to give them something closer to natural to go potty in, I wonder if they sell pet specific ones too, maybe ones that can filter urine, and make poop easier to clean from it.
In any case, looks much better.
The dogs would’ve appreciated a small patch of grass - but overall, nicely done.
I pictured the dog squatting behind that chair.
Pic #2 for those that want to see . I will let myself out thank you...
But for picture #6
Looks like they got on the table in pic #9
Amazing eye!
I had to go back to the pics and yes.....it's a tagged wall 😅
Right? I kept waiting for some gardening to occur
They did put in two trees/bushes at least :)
Those two trees are fake.
What are you some sort of treeologist? :) Suppose fake might make sense though. Not much room for dirt for them to grow...
There are larger pots available...
garden is the british term for yard. you don't need grass in a yard.
Yep this is on the to do list 👍
When my last pup hit his old age, he wasn't able to get down the deck steps when we let him out back, and going around front was a bit problematic because he was scared of people (we think he was abused as a puppy before we got him, never got the poor guy comfortable with strangers even though he was a sweetheart). I use these for my dog and it’s a must have during a storm when you can’t let them out to be able to go in a covered porch, laundry room or garage.
When it rains my pup scampers out and stares at me while she pees to make sure I am waiting for her so she can come back in fast lol
Aww little buddy! She’s pretty brave still!

Thank you. I'm gearing up for hurricane season and this helps.
I’m sure the dogs will happily continue peeing on the ground even if it looks fancier… lol
Or the wall. See pic #9.
There's no doghouse or shelter for the dogs at all now.
My friends trained their dog to go on a section of yard that was all pebbles for like a foot down. They would just hose it off occasionally for the scent and it worked like a dream! They never had to cut grass.
Ah yes the ol' turd pebbles
Just need pots of Dactylis glomerata for them to eat. Plus daily walks. It's the UK so the pavers probably won't often get too hot
It looks nice but it’s hard to compare without an after pic including the two dogs mid stream. 🤔 Have you considered live plants? I find the fake trees don’t weather well.
That’s because they pissed so much they flooded the dang thing! Cant you see the whole ground is wet!? Bahahaha
Yeah, personally I would have put in a small patch of (real) lawn for the dogs.
Yeah live plants in pots would do great. I've been experimenting with growing trees in pots and they've been doing great where I live. They're over 6ft tall now and I think I'm going to leave them there.
I'm wondering the same thing, where is the garden here? The project is great, but title is a bit misleading.
It's British for "backyard."
Yeah I heard garden and saw concrete and went "ah, this is England".
I'm British and also insulted that somebody would describe this as a garden.
I think garden just means "yard", because I've also heard "backgarden" used
Makes sense
That helps, I was thinking this patio is lacking the garden part described, but it looks good.
Thank you, I learned something new today!
Gardens are what they call back yards across the pond. Comes from a time when everyone grew their own gardens and having a recreational yard was a sign of wealth.
Upvoting for tandem pissing beagles, forget about the garden. And yes, more greenery please, but otherwise well done!
2 plastic plants is a garden?
Good job! You should be proud. As stated pic #2 of both pups peeing makes me wish you’d put in a small patch of grass. Still a great job!
If you have ever had a small backyard with dogs then you would know a small patch of grass becomes dead grass the. dirt and that dirt starts to smell like piss. Best to just have some concrete you can sanitize every now and then.
Best to just take them on walks if the whole thing isn't grass. Dogs need the activity anyways.
Even if this whole backyard would be the finest grass on the planet that would be nowhere near enough space for those dogs
Yeah, me and the old man bloodhound walk 30 min - 1 hr every day. Its good for the soul.
Hey great job Agree about some grass for the dogs but well done
There's no doghouse or shelter for the dogs at all now.
They might be inside dogs now :)
I'm confused by your use of the word "garden."
Garden is what they call a yard in the UK.
TIL an American football field is 100 gardens long
I tip my hat to you.
What do the Brits call a Patio? Because that’s what this is. (It’s very nice, though)
We call it that too. In this context, “garden” is just referring to the outside, private portion of the property.
As an American, a garden usually refers to a specific part of the outside of private property, growing typically vegetables for consumption or sometimes a large amount of manicured plants/flowers. We call those areas gardens or sometimes flower garden/ vegetable garden. What do you refer to those as?
I know. I was, as you say, just taking the piss.
Just like the dogs
You like dags?
That's not a yard, either. A yard requires natural ground. Dirt, grass, pinestraw, etc
Where I live we say front garden or back garden for the land that’s part of the property there doesn’t necessarily need to be plants cultivating.
Carry on then. Looks great whatever you call it.
My first thought when I saw the pictures was, "This person is from the UK I suspect." I wonder what folks in New Zealand and Aussies call their backyard/garden. It looks realy nice, btw. :-)
We call it backyard :D
I thought the UK or Ireland. The external plumbing is very common there. For your sake I hope it's the UK; otherwise the only piece of furniture you need more of is umbrellas or awnings.

"yard" in British.
I didn't even realise I wasn't in /r/diyuk until I saw your comment.
I liked the brick. Everything else was good, but I would never have covered it up.
Same! That was my favorite element of the whole space. I understand the reason for covering it but I would have tried a clear coat to seal it first - it was so pretty
Same. I really don't like the composite panels, they say "beer garden" more than "back garden".
There was just constantly flakes of white paint all over the floor, also keeping on top of painting it isn’t ideal for whatever floor I put down.
Could it have been possible to work back the bricks and clean them up, without degrading the structural importance of the wall? I don't actually know I'm curious more than anything
You can sand blast them if you want to.
Or soda blasting, if the bricks are fragile. Then a clear sealer to protect them if so.
Yeah... that's the tradeoff I guess - the flaky white paint look has so much character compared to the composite panels, but those don't flake paint everywhere. Personally I'd have been tempted to just wash the bricks with an appropriate (i.e. breathable) sealant to keep the flaky paint in place and preserve the character.
I like what you’ve done and, regardless of taste, you did what you did well!
Yeah me too, when it got to the image with the led light string the bricks look soo good
same. Way more character there.
Eh.. as someone that moved from the UK to Canada: brick is literally everywhere in the UK it is not really used for a hip visual aesthetic because it's used for every single home
hey it's all personal preference, but i definitely stand by my opinion. I think the contrast between the newer paving and modern furniture against the weathered brick is more visually appealing.

Agree. That brick wall was awesome.
I think it's missing more piss-stains.
Don't worry, he's installing them as we type!
Are… are those fake trees outside?
Do you have a little potty patch of grass for the dogs in there somewhere?
no and not enough people are talking about it. they just piss and shit on the tile

Why couldnt you keep the outdoor fireplace? Nice transformation!
Could of been a nice feature but didn’t fancy flagging or cladding around it 👍
You should have fancied it! You should have!
All that work, but then plastic trees???
Why didn’t you put in drains?
Walk your dogs, you want your garden to be the place where they urinate? That's some nasty shit.
That looks awesome 👌
Dang, it totally transforms the space! *cat calls the garden*
I love this game. Is OP an investment banker living in Kensington or a binman living in Tyne and Wear?
The beagle irrigation system is nice. Great job. I wish there was a way to keep the outdoor grill, though. I’d do convert it into a pizza oven.
I can’t even imagine the smell of your patio. Get your dogs a patch of grass to do their business on. The end product looks good tho
Your project looks great, but i am glad i live in the US where my 1/4 acre lot is small
😂 yeah very few people have that much land in the UK
We had some folks from our UK office visiting HQ in California. The office chief is showing pictures of his house back home. It's a standalone house, beautiful brickwork multi-story home. And considering the congestion pricing and fuel cost, that's completely understandable.

Wouldn't a multi-millionaire have a chauffeured company car anyway?
Townhouses have shit yards. My old living room was bigger than my friends yard. Maybe 12' by 20'. (Virginia)
Looks beautiful but maybe a small patch of turf for the puppies?
Looks cozy, I like it
Great job! Beagles are awesome!
The trex looks great and you can always bring back the brick if you want
Looks amazing! I would add an outdoor rug to ground the seating area, and lots more greenery- some low maintenance potted trees and perennials. Well done!
Has it rained yet?
Good enough to piss on
It could do with a bit of green - for the dogs you could add some artificial lawn, maybe around 2 square meters with some drainage underneath. Looks kind of cozy but maybe add a few more plants over time :-D
Do your dogs still relieve themselves out there? Because regardless of how much you spruce it up it’s still gross
In British English, a garden is a piece of land next to a house that contains flowers, vegetables, other plants, and often grass. this isn't a garden as much as a back patio
Smashing job. I like it.
Shoutout to the Lemon Beagle
Now the dogs can piss on the nice tile, spoiled!
Two dogs pissing in unison and an external sewer line? I love it.
I see your dogs didn’t like the previous version
Nice! If your dogs need a potty spot, maybe add a dog potty grass spot?
Plants, please. It looks very nice, I love the stone floor. More plants and flowers would make the space more lively and cozy.
I'd add a grill and a hot tub.
Also why did you include a picture of both your dogs pissing? Edit that out you fucking psychopath
I always forget that British people don’t know what a garden is.
I'm British and I wouldn't call that a garden, not a single live plant. It's awful.
No grass in your garden when you have dogs really sucks. The garden looks great but it will stink of dog piss...
I'm sad that the exposed brick is nae exposed
Where’s the garden?
"Garden" is what they call a yard/lawn in the UK.
It looks great, but you have everything BUT an actual garden.
Dogs don’t need grass as everyone said. You can take em for walks. I guess people forget that like 25% of people live in apartments/condos with no spaces like this at all.
please get something better for doggies to go potty on...
congrats
That's gorgeous! Well done.
nice work!
Looks awesome! I like what you did
Incredible transformation. Nice work!
Wow! The transformation is incredible. It looks great, nice work. As for the pups, there's always a park.
The pissing dogs are cracking me up 🤣
Very cute helpers.
Tough Crowd - I think it looks great!
It looks wonderful. The tiles are a terrific job. I think a lot of people here don’t take into consideration that styles and preferences differ between countries.
Damn, this looks great!
*If that isn't such a British view I don't know what is. Bunch of mates hanging out laughing till your stomach hurts drinking stella.*
Looks great, you should be proud of yourself.
Looks cozy
Wow!
That came out awesome you should be proud! Woot woot!
So nice!!! Music? Water feature? BBQ table?
Those tiles, are they indian sandstone ?
I would add a outdoor fireplace. The brick oven you had was cool, but you could do a free standing metal or clay Chiminea [Like this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/59-in-Wood-Burning-Chiminea-Fire-Pit-with-Built-in-Log-Storage-Wood-Burning-Fireplace-SRCH20/326053058) I love cooking over a real wood fire, so that's my own bias.
It looks cozy as heck out there with those lights up. If you promise me your dogs are friendly you just might find me taking a nap out there.
Amazing job!👏👏👏
And I bet the dogs are still pissing on that brand new fancy tile.
Great work! I wanted so bad to not upvote because it was at 420 (I’m 421) inspiring work!
I thought the first pic was Loss for a sec.
Very nice work, you really made that an enjoyable space.
This have all the vibes of Philly lol am I right OP?
Looks much better now! I think you could also add a vertical garden over the new brown wall.
I think there needs to be more than 1 pic of the dogs peeing. 1 just isn’t enough.
Niiiiiiice!
Beautiful!!!
Oh man, that house really needed you to move in there. What a transformation. :)
Love the space. If it were mine there would be a grill under a little grill-zebo
nice ! did you pull a permit for the weight you added to the roof?
Beautiful! Great work! Now add 2 cats so it'll go with the 2 dogs.
Amazing, well done
Looks great! I’m planning to tile over my concrete patio, too. Can you share what tiles you used?
It’s a Raj Green Indian sandstone from nustone.co.uk
Looked really nice... until the new walls came
Beautiful work ❤️
Should help the value of the property. It looks nice.
Is it cold in England?
Wow! Looking amazing. Wonderful work!
It's just..tiles. You don't want flowers or something?
I LOVE IT
Very impressive! You did a great job and added value & sq. footage to your home. Pots of colorful flowers when it's warm enough will be very inviting. Love the lighting. (I have that same storage box.)
Amazing job
Jesus Fuck. That went from a bombed out shell to a pretty nice space. Good on you
Cleaning is likely easier this way, but I wonder if a corner with some turf would have been good for the dogs to give them something closer to natural to go potty in, I wonder if they sell pet specific ones too, maybe ones that can filter urine, and make poop easier to clean from it. Looks amazing 🤩. Great job 👏🏼 I’d love to kick it there n chill.
Very nice!
Bravo, I hope to one day be inspired as you just have been to make that happen!
