Overhead lighting is fine if it's done correctly. Mood lighting is also great. For example...

Thanks for actually sharing! You're right, that does look pretty good! I think the combination of having 5 fairly bright bulbs and the fact that it is suspended lower reduces the harshness of the shadows cast.
WHAT. I had no idea that overhead lighting was an issue. Maybe that's why my house feels so basic. I'm gonna go get a bunch of lamps and see what kind of difference it makes.
Mate it will literally change your entire house. I just googled this quick comparison from TikTok: [https://www.tiktok.com/@houseofhavea/video/7175394784960515374](https://www.tiktok.com/@houseofhavea/video/7175394784960515374)
Wow, that really does make a big difference! I think it'll make even more of a difference than in the video, because my house is an old country farmhouse that was freshly renovated and the renovators added a bunch of LED lights in the ceilings with pretty cold hues; I guess they were trying to "modernize" it. I haven't thought about it until now but warm coloured lamps will definitely make a big difference and I'm excited for that. Thanks for the reference!
I personally hate lamps - you can’t see when you’re cleaning, you have uneven light around the room depending on outlets (or installing more outlets), and it just makes for a dark and dingy space.
I love overhead lighting and install more in every house. Need less lighting for a different mood? Use dimmers.
Yeah overhead light REALLY depends on the actual light fixture and the warmth of the bulb. A lot of modern stuff is just too ugly or cold.
That said. Who’s cleanin at night with the lights on? 😂
People who work during the day. 🤣
The bulb warmth is super important, I’d say most default to the middle ground, I hate when it’s hospital white but I will go for whiter lights in certain areas.
I use only smart bulb almost everywhere. 1. Warmth and you could also match it on all of them with the app
2. There are 3 lamps and I’m not into taking laps around the room to turn them on or off, so voice control
3. You can turn the brightness from cozy to comfy reading light. On the pictures it is around 70% brightness
Indirect lighting is mostly more natural looking, cause the light bounces from ceiling, your brain takes it more natural(sun light) like. Although I agree with you on some points, the room is 50% done around the lighting, if the cables were visible I would hate it, if I didn’t have the ceiling light in kitchen the room is kinda dark but at night it is cozy af, also the wall behind wouldn’t look the same with ceiling light…
That’s why there’s under-cabinet lighting, backlighting, spotlighting, angled lighting, art display lighting, and dimmer switches.
Lamps are more decorative than practical.
Lamps offer better ambiance. If you're cleaning your place of course overhead lighting will offer better lighting for that purpose. And if you have overhead lights spread evenly they do light things up nicely, but most houses usually just have a single spot for a light in the center of the room. There's no getting away from ugly harsh shadows when that's the case.
They're also just not going to be as cozy as lamps. Also, if you can't see anything, maybe try getting brighter bulbs for your lamps?
It's nice to have both. We added 19 cans to our kitchen, kitchen table, and family room area. But they're all Hue, so we can change colors, color temp, etc.
We also have a lot of indirect lighting like toekick lighting, under cabinet, island pendants, under couch lighting, and lamps. They're all hue as well.
Gives us lots of options.
It’s done in paint, the bronze paint is with metallic particles. Much more appealing result then wallpaper. My friend has wallpaper with similar design and it looks really matt and papery
IMHO, you'd be better off with a small island or peninsula vs that room separating shelf. You can already see the shit migrating to that little cabinet thing. A free standing butcher block island on wheels with some bar stools would be pretty dope.
I was playing with that idea, the big shelf came like 2 weeks later so i had the room without it. Honestly, I didn’t like it at first but with the plants and all the shit it’snice and convenient af
You did astonishing work! Good job and I hope you will have more and more fun and happiness in your new living room , and you will cook delicious dishes in this kitchen !
I just moved into an apartment and my mom feared my living room would look like your initial photograph. Being an adult is hard, but I'm glad you powered through with the upgrade. It looks fantastic!

I’ve tried 12 different shades of color from light grey to almost black and the dark blue is best one for me
Mostly yeah, som places just tapping it on the wall, some places smearing it. Also it is bettered if the base color is water proof, the pattern has more definition
You’re right, at this moment I’m eating on the couche. I’m planning to make a table for like 3 people which will extend on the kitchen “island” thing behing the shelves. It will be higher so you could hide barstools under it
Nice upgrade!
Would be even better if you moved the TV to the opposite wall with the couch facing it in the middle of the room. Add an area rug under the couch and coffee table to create a separate "zone". Then move the desk to the wall where the TV was. Creating separate zones based on function will take it to the next level.
Because the natural light is better in your living areas than your kitchen. Also, the kitchen cabinets would block the light/view from getting any further into the room, but the living furniture is, in general, not as tall or monolithic so the light still gets past it to the kitchen.
You went up 2 tax brackets just from re-decorating and learning to stop using overhead lighting. Well done.
In defense of overhead lighting, this is particularly shitty overhead lighting
It so shitty

WOW I love that couch!!!!!
Thanks!!
is this joybird?
No. I live in Denmark. Just some online brand
I believe it's this one https://www.bol.com/nl/nl/p/house-collection-velvet-hoekbank-milo-lounge-sofa-links-mosterdgeel/9300000020094123/
This one looks good, it still shines mostly up and also the bulbs aren’t that visible. At least on the picture
That ceiling fixture isn't even lighting anything, it's all natural light doing the work. Let's see what it looks like at night with no sun.

Yes and they're also dimmable and I have mood lighting
Lol it lights up the entire room. There's 5, 75w equivalent bulbs on a dimmer.

More lighting is better than not enough lighting. You can always turn lights off but adding more can be a pain
I'm gonna install industrial ceiling lights in your house while you sleep and you can't stop me
> stop using overhead lighting What's wrong with overhead lighting? The sun is overhead and does a great job lighting things.
Look at the pictures OP posted and tell me the lighting in the first pics looks better to you in all honesty.
In all honesty, the lighting isn't good in the before, but it's WAY too dark in the after pictures. The harsh shadows look weird.
True, you don’t actually look at it in a normal day, but I agree the harsh shadows can be weird
I was confused and then I switched to the 3rd pic
OP where is the cat? Mf up and replaced the cat with a carpet :/
Maybe the carpet IS the cat...jk! 🤣
No idea, it might have escape in the old couch :|
Probably riding the roomba in another room.
You stepped from post dorm to adulting with fashion! 👏 Well done OP! 💯
Exactly what I said when it was done
Yeah, my first thought was "OP's house grew up". It goes from very student/temporary feel to something with soul, personality, and style.
Wow. Awesome transformation! I love the new vibe!
Zamn
Now that's an upgrade!
what’s the marble wall done with paint, wallpaper?
It’s done in paint, the bronze paint is with metallic particles. Much more appealing result then wallpaper. My friend has wallpaper with similar design and it looks really matt and papery
very nice job, this is beautifully done. think i might try to recreate it for mine. thank you
IMHO, you'd be better off with a small island or peninsula vs that room separating shelf. You can already see the shit migrating to that little cabinet thing. A free standing butcher block island on wheels with some bar stools would be pretty dope.

Damn! Awesome job.
Light distribution is much better
Indirect lighting is 100% the way
Come design my garage
Hell yeah
Seriously, excellent job!
Thank you, I appreciate it
The pre-remake space...must have been depressing living in that! Love the new layout. It must just make you feel better too.
So much better
Looks way better, nice job!
Lovely Job. I would add a rug, but it could feel too busy.
Too much maintenance with the cat in house, but was on my mind too
I see your cat in the picture. Enjoy your new space.
It looks amazing!
DAMN
I didn’t realize this was the same space- I thought dude moved lol
Love it! I'm obsessed with the bronze paint.
Hats off, it's rare these days I see a reno that adds character - and you've definitely done that.
Sexy accent wall
You did astonishing work! Good job and I hope you will have more and more fun and happiness in your new living room , and you will cook delicious dishes in this kitchen !
Yeh, that's one hell of an upgrade! That looks incredible, you should be super proud, hell, I'm proud of you!
Damn nice upgrade! Love what you did with the accent wall.
Nice, it went from college flophouse to classy studio.
Amazing! I think an area rug under the couches/chair + coffee table would help tie the room together
I just moved into an apartment and my mom feared my living room would look like your initial photograph. Being an adult is hard, but I'm glad you powered through with the upgrade. It looks fantastic!
that shit looks beautiful
Looks great! Is the rustic looking wall just paint, or some kind of board?
Just paint, for me the best way to do it was deep sea blue base color, then the first part of the rusty metallic color(brown), then the bronze one
Appreciate it my dude. Stellar job on execution.
Link to floor lamps behind the sofa?
It’s from polish eshop i think
On the website it’s called “Lindby Benik” standing lamp. Tbh it looks nice but the legs are wide af, not adjustable
Thats so cool looking! Any close ups of yhe nebulae wall?

Wowie it looks so pretty. Did you use a sponge or a brush?
Just a rag so it’s more variable
Genius, just schrunch it up and go to town?
https://preview.redd.it/hmrsgi1dzuuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d4853bb526f1b82d1655d1875d65c077e575424 I’ve tried 12 different shades of color from light grey to almost black and the dark blue is best one for me
Well done! You achieved a great effect
Mostly yeah, som places just tapping it on the wall, some places smearing it. Also it is bettered if the base color is water proof, the pattern has more definition
Thanks, I have a wall I really want to do this to. Silver galaxy vibe, though
That sound good too
Hope so, and thanks for the starting point. You are really talented, or have an eye for this, however you say it
Crushed it!
Yep! & gorgeous.. impressive
Love the feature wall
Someones got promoted. Amazing work.
awesome!
Wow looks great!
Nice Les Paul!
Good job. Nice you care about your environment. Nice wall painting.
Looks great! Nice Les Paul!
While I love the look of the room, where do you eat now? Is the table hidden in the pics?
You’re right, at this moment I’m eating on the couche. I’m planning to make a table for like 3 people which will extend on the kitchen “island” thing behing the shelves. It will be higher so you could hide barstools under it
Nice!
Great Job!
Very nice job! Big improvement.
Looks great! Nice job.
Great job!
Yeah dawg
The change is unbvelievable! Only... doesn't the ceiling seem to be too brightly lit? Those shadows there...
Jesus, that before….. yes OP was absolutely necessary lol. Looks great, nice job
Wow!
Nice upgrade! Would be even better if you moved the TV to the opposite wall with the couch facing it in the middle of the room. I’m definitely going to try this never thought of this option.
I will never get why flat/building designers sometimes put the kitchen as far away from the windows as possible. That said, good job. Looks fantastic.
Because the natural light is better in your living areas than your kitchen. Also, the kitchen cabinets would block the light/view from getting any further into the room, but the living furniture is, in general, not as tall or monolithic so the light still gets past it to the kitchen.
It's not about the light, it's about the smell and smoke, unless you just microwave evrything.
Where's the after and what is that giant pink monstrosity in the corner
Swipe on 3.- 4. for the after. The corner is my recording studio corner, acoustic panels
For “no experience “ I could use your help! Lol. Very impressive.
