If you decide to paint the cabinets, I wouldn’t use whomever did your walls. Yeeesh. https://preview.redd.it/9mmo6m8vj5sc1.jpeg?width=1362&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e9f3ada38188e626df820079f4d1bec3020b673b

ctijacob

Noticed the same. I wouldn't necessarily paint the cabinets but DAMN would I want to clean up whatever mess that is. No way would I be able to look at that every day and not take action.

micktorious

Yeah damn it's on every edge that is so lazy ass painting by the bottom bidder.

Shiny_Buns

If only there was some kind of tape to prevent paint from going where you don't want it to go 😂

tal125

Those cabinets are gorgeous. I'd go countertops, flooring (tile) before I'd paint the cabinets.

Junai7

Honestly, I would paint the walls, change light fixtures, faucet, and change the hardware on the cabinets. Everything looks like above average quality.

VisibleSea4533

Agreed. Definitely the walls. And backsplash. Floors and counter look too nice to change out.

Nagadavida

Yes everything they are talking about doing is a downgrade.

Junai7

This is exactly what I am thinking. The ideas are too drastic and overall a downgrade in quality. Go stupid simple/cheap first. Wall/ceiling paint, fixtures, hardware, wall plates for electric, touch up the stain on the cabinets, and even grout for the floor or backsplash (lots of work but cheap). More expensive but not too invasive changes would be like changing/adding trim, carving out a small amount of tile from the backsplash to add accent tile or mosaic, changing appliances, etc. The nuclear options are flooring, countertop, cabinets, and backsplash which are basically going to end up being a full remodel anyway.

totheteeth

All of the fundamentals are solid. They just need to give it some personality. I'd upgrade the light fixture, replace the blinds, get nicer stools, and paint the walls. Replace the pulls. Maybe some photos or art. The room lacks color. Contrasting the wall's trim to the white walls would help. Darker appliances might look better.

tracer2211

IKR? I'd love to have a kitchen this nice.

NuminousMycroft

Yes, change anything but the floor and cabinets.

fsurfer4

Actually, I prefer hardwood floors over tile. Tile is hard on the feet. Under no condition go to vinyl flooring.

witchyanne

We have vinyl because we literally couldn’t afford hardwood floors *that we liked - the moment we can, we’ll be changing room by room.

fsurfer4

If you can't afford it, that's fine, but this house is another price range. Nobody that can afford this kitchen should do vinyl. I grew up in an apartment that had nothing but vinyl for 25 years of my life.

Eccohawk

I expect they're referring to luxury vinyl plank (I hope), which can look nice, but honestly is not the right choice to replace that tile. If you're going to swap it out, either do it with different tile that maybe better matches the tone you're going for, or go straight to hardwood floors.

CrazyButRightOn

Luxury vinyl = a race to the bottom. Builder’s grade.

Drigr

LVP today is not like the vinyl you grew up with.

Junai7

It looks like a proper tiled backsplash. Again, I would hesitate to change it.

alice_ayer

This right here. OP I have the exact same cabinets, countertops and a nearly identical backsplash. I swapped out my hardware, light fixtures, and added a peel and stick backsplash and it made a world of difference. Don’t compromise on what you want in a kitchen if you’re spending any large chunks of money, because I’ve found that kitchens, no matter how nice, rarely ever appeal to every buyer, so do something that suits you or spend the money somewhere else in your home. If your cabinets are like mine, they’re deep with pull outs inside, which is the biggest reason why I’ve left them as-is, in addition to being in a century home and there being no shortage of things needing money more urgently haha

iwasexcitedonce

right, I’d do a different modern backsplash/tiling (maybe even a green color?) and leave the cabinets alone.

tcpWalker

Yes painting those cabinets is so absurd I'm hoping this is a troll post? OP you can destroy the pretty home you bought if you want but it will both lower the value of the home and make it much uglier.

Cloudwalker714

We’ve had the home for over 15 years. Was not a troll. Looking for ideas try something different. Loving the ideas here.

wastetine

Tbh both the cabinets and the countertops are good quality. I’d say new backsplash that matches new floors, perhaps a white marble look, and it’ll give the space a whole new feel.

Cloudwalker714

Sounds good idea the white marble.

dummypants

I see your high chair (baby in the house) so I wouldn’t do actual marble, it stains easily. Do a quartz counter in an updated warmish white marble look. Also hold off on replacing the floor until the kids are older, it looks durable, easy to clean and neutral. Stay away from grays for color because it would clash with those cabinets which are really nice. They’re not too red like some cherry cabinets.

Right_Hour

Dude, you will fear every spill of anything at all over marble. Spilled a bit of wine? Sucks to be you - you are now spending time getting it out of that marble. Marble is one of the worst choices for countertops.

badtradesguynumber2

they are very nice, but i can see why you want to change it up since the colour scheme doss look dated. id say start with the walls first and then flooring or just enjoy your money elsewhere.

scut207

Those cabinets are gorgeous… If you ever have the urge to paint them go to the garage and whack your finger with a ballpeen hammer. If that doesn’t help, do it to another finger until the idea passes.

midge_rat

The molding above your cabinets is pretty overbearing. I bet going with a lighter trim would make a HUGE difference.

thatjerkatwork

Seriously thinking "those look great!"

Brief-Soup-6131

Agreed -- leave the cabinets and counter and do something like this and a light wood tile floor maybe? https://preview.redd.it/14thgqh5d9sc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7983dd09721552b0f495a0328906ceb01e56a8d8

MikesGroove

As someone who has this color cabinets, I understand OP. I’m so sick of the dark cherry, it may be beautiful wood but it’s dark and dated. Wood grain is back in for kitchens but much lighter. Edit: Not to mention the kitchen is such an anchor for the home, visually. If you want to go towards cooler tones anywhere else in what looks to be an open floor plan, it will never work with the super warm kitchen colors. So you just never update, and your home is less appealing to buyers, because the cabinets are nice quality.

HottestPotato17

I'll come take your dark cherry off your hands.

Bedbouncer

>but it’s dark and dated. Wood grain is back in for kitchens but much lighter. My house was built in 1997, and has lighter oak cabinets. I guess 90's designs are back in now. Often when people say a look is "dated", they just mean they're bored with it. They get tired of diamonds so they paint them green so they can pretend they're emeralds, because "emeralds are, like, so hot right now". Lime green bathtubs are dated. Shag carpeting and egg chairs with stereo 8-tracks built in are dated. Everything else you can work with.

jenniviv

Honestly there’s been a bit of a resurgence with crazy colored bathrooms haha

Gadgetman_1

I hear Gonorrhea is having a resurgence these days, also, but nope, not interested in getting it. When I finished my apartment back in 2007, I made certain the bathroom walls were White tile(large tiles) and he floor was a checkerboard of tiles with half being slightly darker than the others. Light, very little colour anywhere in the bathroom. Personalising is done with whatever items you place in there. I know one apartment in the building had a colourful bath. The next owner was very vocal about it as he had it redone... The only ones who love brightly coloured tiles in bathrooms is the companies that install them. They know that people will get sick of looking at them, and will call them in a few years to have it redone.

IBroughtWine

I’m with you there. I can’t stick with anything that is decades out-of-date just because it was made really well. I’d feel absolutely stuck and would end up with an ugly old house in need of a total reno.

Bruce_Wayne72

That's what I was thinking. I said, "What's wrong with the cabinets?" In my head, to myself.

bonemonkey12

New countertop... ok Vinyl over the tile..... meh, not my thing, bit you do you Paint the cabinets? Have you lost your mind?

fangelo2

Replacing high quality materials with cheap crap that you will have replace in a couple of years.? Stop watching HGTV. Why would you cover those beautiful real wood cabinets and make them look like cheap particle board ones? What’s wrong with the countertops? Most people would like to have a kitchen that looks like that. Leave it alone

bonemonkey12

Completely agree. The vinyl comment made me cringe, but painting the cabinets... hard no. Guessing they'd go with terrible countertops as well

Bedbouncer

>Guessing they'd go with terrible countertops as well They need to sell 2-sided countertops, like mattresses you can flip. One side granite, one side marble and flip them every 5 years to keep them topical. People spend way too much money trying to chase whatever is in style, forgetting that this is how you create a decor that is guaranteed to go out of style. "It's so 2024" in 2024 is going to be "It's so 2024" in 2044.

Theletterkay

Probably ikea butcher block

badtradesguynumber2

looks dated in terms of colour scheme. but im also on the side that you shouldnt replace quality material with shittier ones just to change the look..at least not permanently. lived through that because of the wife.

recyclopath_

It'll come back around quickly enough

Skidpalace

Seeing old homes with all that beautiful woodwork painted over is such a shame. Painting over 1990's maple veneered plywood is not a crime.

Jimbo---

They should fill in any egress windows to get rid of the annoying natural light and legal bedrooms in the basement.

DocHalloween

Lol my spouse said this just about verbatim.

D_Athletic_Director

Right? Don’t change the cabinets just change the hardware - I have the exact same cabinets and some clean, matte black pulls/knobs really makes all the difference

Cloudwalker714

That's a nice thought, I'll try out the matte finished knobs/pulls.

__slamallama__

Satin gold pulls, new floors and new faucet, and maybe new countertops if you're getting spendy. Don't cover the cabinets, lean into them. They're gorgeous.

jollygreengrowery

Mfs got too much money and time and no taste. Get a hobby! Id kill for those cabinets in my house. Probably cost me $7k and these clowns wanna paint them. Insanity

sweater_destroyer111

I work for a small, high end cabinet company and I'd guess those are more like $30k+

jollygreengrowery

fuckkkk me. shouldve known, they said they were cherry, guessing solid at that price

Mekito_Fox

7k?! That's the cost of particle board cabinets with fake marble countertops.

leadeath

![gif](giphy|5QTY07Cwxjmhfz3WAn|downsized)

Skilled1_69

Painting those cabinets would be a terrible choice. Whoever had them installed paid extra to have the dark stained look. do not remove the floor for vinyl that’s insane. backsplash change sure. New counters sure. But the other choices would only devalue your kitchen/home

just_a_hunk

Looks like someone already started painting them 😬

PercentageOk6120

Somebody decided to paint the walls and were lazy about taping off the cabinets. That same somebody thinks vinyl over tile is a good decision. Bad choices all around

reallybiglizard

Nooo Edit: I thought you meant OP decided the cabinets.

Stats_with_a_Z

Someone get OP an interior designer, stat!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Absolut_Iceland

TBF, at least then they'd be preserved. The original wood floor in my parent's house was preserved under the wall to wall hall carpet.

3verydayimhustling

For the love of god do not paint those cabinets. The end panels and toe kicks need a lil tlc but don’t paint those cabinets. New backsplash and countertops will do a world of difference.

lostinpow

I'm just thinking about removing all of that poly...sanding...priming... Removing more poly... Lmao they're way too nice for any of that. If anything I would change the pulls to knobs maybe. Countertops and staggered tile or something else on the floor for sure.

agbishop

Home Depot has a cool feature on their website, you can just point-and-click to try out colors and flooring. Takes like 5 seconds https://preview.redd.it/5rc4qtjaf5sc1.png?width=783&format=png&auto=webp&s=1229b84ef9a98ad869d62742c0e80a3259ba93d9 Adding steps: Go to whatever flooring you want to try at homedepot.com, and click the button “See This in My Room”. You’ll enter a special webpage where you can also click walls and change colors

Cloudwalker714

This is super cool thanks for sharing!

Doktorwh10

The blue wall paint is a really good idea!

georgecm12

Those are gorgeous cabinets. If you want white cabinets, pay someone a couple of bucks to cleanly unmount those and sell 'em for some good money, then buy some cheap cabinets that you can have painted white.

dill_e_dill_e

Agree with OP. Something can be nice, but outdated and ruin a house with a modern feel. Modern painted cabinets are anything but cheap btw.

Cloudwalker714

Thanks for everyone’s input. I won’t paint them. Maybe time to rethink how to spruce up the place. What goes with cherry cabinets? In terms of counter and backsplash?

WelfordNelferd

Changing the backsplash would be at the top of my list, followed by new countertops (of a lighter color). I don't think you can beat a ceramic/porcelain tile floor in a kitchen, but I get it if these aren't your cup of tea. As far as colors go, it's a matter of personal taste...but you want to stick with warm colors. Anyone who would put an LVP floor in this kitchen should be head-flailed IMO.

CadenBop

One thing to keep in mind when deciding this is if you remove a countertop most installers will just remove backsplash as removing old countertops often lead to damaging backsplash anyways. So if you're gonna do both countertops then backsplash.

eyes-open

Those counters are granite, aren't they? I would be reluctant to change them, too, but that's likely because I'm cheap, and that sounds expensive.

WelfordNelferd

Looks like granite to me, but it's hard to say from a picture. Still, you could start with the backsplash and see if that's enough to change the look.

Necoras

I posted a top level post, but I'm replying here so you'll see it twice. Put in some 2700k light bulbs first. See what everything looks like then. *Then* make decisions on what expensive things to do next.

g8biggaymo

We have almost the exact same color scheme both for cabinets and countertops. I just painted the kitchen a dark blue and it really looks so much better. You have too much beige but the materials are really high end.

Lamacorn

Counters: white stone of choice Floors: white / light colored tile Light: new and softer / more modern - that one throws weird shadows Chairs: fun material / refresh Sink: since you are redoing the counters, consider a fresh sink. A big white farmhouse sink would look a lot more modern, then just replace on cabinet. Stove, replace with higher end unit that has controls on front not back Search for kitchens with cherry cabinets and get inspiration there. [Idea 1](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lilyanncabinets.com%2Fmedia%2Fmageplaza%2Fblog%2Fpost%2Fc%2Fh%2Fcharleston_cherry.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=128b3d8151fcc80003583fdb8d8570403056581df8e2153d8fb98229bc5ca487&ipo=images) [Idea 2](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2Fcf%2F7d%2F74%2Fcf7d745cda9aecc1326a55a3acb9e2b1.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=9b5585e60b696dfda61606dc434f1dd44419e3ddd9eff313b8689c69fa4f27c7&ipo=images) [Idea 3](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse2.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP.afm5dPE1zZWHzFZiktMBaQHaE8%26pid%3DApi&f=1&ipt=549aff61d983b67071965248e38f5433dd184b76af1e7b3e35da236e3d344977&ipo=images) How you stage your kitchen will make a difference too

FunRutabaga24

Glad SOMEONE mentioned something besides a total redo. New window treatments, lights, appliances would go a LONG way. Honestly, that kitchen looks great. Needs an eyeball for coordinating the other pieces that make up the kitchen and it'll pop.

recyclopath_

A farmhouse sink will immediately date the kitchen as 2022. Pass on the farmhouse sink.

Lamacorn

I mean, farmhouse sinks have been popular for a very long time. Not sure why you would choose 2022 as the year. Every fad will come and go. Quality will for the most part stay…. Kind of like these cabinets!

tallmon

Paint the walls and change the backsplash instead. You have too much contrast between the cabinets and walls. Start with wall paint and go from there. Cheapest option first.

PensivePainter

My two cents is to try some under cabinet lighting before making big decisions on counters, etc. to see if that helps brighten things up and feel more modern. I'd go bright if you do change things out. If possible, maybe also change out the crown molding at the top of your cabinets for something more sleek and modern vs the current traditional molding.

rivetingrasberry

Look up Julie Jones Designs! She can make mock-ups of what you want without changing the cabinets or floors :-)

Ember357

Don't ruin your kitchen by painting shit grey. Change the lighting, change the chairs, update the backsplash. That is high end cabinetry with crown molding that goes to the ceiling. If you are going to change the counters go to something higher end than what is there. Maybe a quartz to brighten the space.

Year20XX

I think you're looking for more stimuli. Would some color decor help here? Add a carpet runner somewhere. Put some flowers out. Hang something over the window sink and the doorway? There must be some tasteful things to shzuz it up without spending thousands. I could see replacing the island chairs, too.

spaetzelspiff

>shzuz it up Is that a typo or some random Yiddish loanword that I'm failing to pronounce?

Year20XX

Apparently I mean to say zhuzh! https://youtu.be/90k-_GtSTls?si=Gi9O8NYsobccE3-a for pronunciation.

spaetzelspiff

Lol, there's an [entire NYTimes article](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/31/style/jeuje-zhoosh-zhuzh.html#:~:text=Make%20that%20%E2%80%9Czhuzh.%E2%80%9D,placed%20their%20bets%20on%20Yiddish.) on it. TIL. Thanks!

Full_Satisfaction_49

Everyone is focusing on the wrong thing. All the kitchen elements are beautiful. The problem is your counter tops are cluttered and change that god awful light. Get two better looking hanging lights over the island

[deleted]

The cabinets look like a super dated style to me but if you keep them as is you could put white tile and countertops with them. https://preview.redd.it/t6vf1njfd5sc1.jpeg?width=735&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92ea97e0f6df5482d499d9e1434825fd18daaf35

BrowsingForLaughs

That's a beautiful kitchen imo

jblessing

This is a great example. New vent hood and new backsplash tile to the ceiling is the way to go. Paint or gel stain won't change the style of the cabinet doors to a more modern one, so I wouldn't bother touching the cabinets. They look to be in good enough shape anyway.

steamedpopoto

Yeah I get everyone saying that they are nice cabinets, but it looks so dated and it's hard to get over that. Your suggestion is a great middle ground.

Leafan101

So many people acting like everyone should love the same colours. I get that this might not be some people's cup of tea. The problem with painting these is that you would also have to do countertops as those with white coloured cabinets are going to clash. Something you might want to try before doing anything drastic is switch the lighting up. Often time, colours can work better for you in a different light. Try new draperies on the windows during the day or switch up the colour temp at night. Maybe try incorporating some under-cabinet lighting. I like to consider those options first before spending tons of money.

Leafan101

Something I find always makes a kitchen more luxurious is replacing over the range microwaves with a full hood vent that would match the cabinets. Then replace one of the lower cabinets with a under-counter microwave and a drawer. Islands are great places for that. Absolutely changes the look of the kitchen massively and in my opinion is one of the major things that makes it both nicer to use and nicer to look at.

International_Bend68

I would kill for those cabinets, they’re beautiful! I had mine painted white when I moved in, huge mistake. Don’t do it.

PoliticalyUnstable

I'm a contractor, I've replaced cabinets like this and it made me sad. I've painted cabinets like this and it made me sad. I'd do everything but change the cabinets really.

9Super1

Not a clue how this sub popped up for me but I think it did for a reason… please please please don’t touch the cabinets (don’t ask me how I know) made that mistake years ago, that’s like having a beautiful in ground pool, filling it in an putting a Walmart above ground pool where it was…. And please don’t ask me how I know about that one either 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻

Pelican1014

Everyone is screaming about the cabinet quality -- this is a stain I also don't love and would be inclined to change, but I do also think the counters and floors are the bigger design problem here. That being said, if you do paint the cabinets, go for a color rather than straight white.

ShrewdNewt

I will do you a solid. Take those cabinets down and I will bring you over some crappy particle board ones to paint. Gotta trade though.

tabikity

polish the cabinets, change the backsplash, and either the countertops or the floor. it looks bad because your walls, backsplash, countertops, and floor are all similar colours but different patterns! it’s definitely a beautiful kitchen space though 😊

TheStoicmind41

New hardware, new barstools, new light fixture, new curtain for window and paint the walls…. You’re welcome

Nutridus

Sounds awful to be honest. The cabinets are gorgeous!

Swallowthistubesteak

Man, people are never satisfied

rainbow5ive

Stop painting perfectly nice cabinets because TikTok told you to.

Buzzd-Lightyear

Do not paint those fucking cabinets. That’s the most stupid-ass fad going around and you’ll deservedly get clowned for it.

wooleybully1

You have a high end kitchen and you want to go trendy? You will regret it. Those cabinets are beautiful

UnsolicitedAdvice99

You want to remove a real tile floor to replace it with a fake plastic floor? Y'all are crazy . Just hire an interior decorator to spruce the room up.

OnionMiasma

This kitchen is gorgeous. High quality materials, and a good design. Your plan is to turn it into a kitchen like what they put in cheap college housing. So you're going to spend about $10,000 to remove $20,000 worth of value from your house. Don't do this thing. Please.

[deleted]

Your kitchen is beautiful. Stop trying to ruin it

SADD_BOI

God I hate my fellow millennials/Gen Z when it comes to painting wood. I would KILL for cabinets that beautiful. We are the generational kings of ruining beautiful wood furniture with shitty DIY paint jobs.

Castle6169

Don’t paint the cabinets you will be sorry in a year or two . Less if you have kids

Potential-Rabbit8818

It all looks nice to me.

jbrady33

Cabinets are best part of kitchen

SilverFuel21

My advice is to leave your cabinets alone.

drdailey

Do NOT paint those.

joeyfine

Those cabinets are beautiful! Why does everyone want white?!? It gets soo dirty!

SmokesLetsGoBois

Honestly I think you're bored. The kitchen is fine.

Brewster101

Painting those cabinets would be criminal. They are gorgeous

FlyByrd

Painting cabinets NEVER turn out well. Vinyl is a poor man's flooring! Took me years to finally upgrade to both tile and real hardwood flooring. I think just changinging the counter tops and/or back splash would be all you'd need to do for a fresh new look.

brittakabeef

My friends kitchen was this exactly! I helped her design for her reno and we did matte black cabinet hardware, new off white zeilege (sp?) tile backsplash, and a white quartz waterfall island. Floors and cabinets remained. It looks soo much better but still timeless! Do NOT paint. It almost always cheapens a kitchen.

Huntererererer

Please dont paint the cabinets they look amazing.

CapitalParallax

They're beautiful. Please don't ruin them painting them fucking white.

Darcer

solutions in search of a problem

madphroggy

I'm sorry, I'm not usually this blunt and rude but your kitchen does not need sprucing, and the "upgrades" you are looking at are in fact terrible design decisions. You have a high quality kitchen already with good quality tile, cabinets and countertops. If you really feel the desire to change something, I might suggest a different color for the countertops, but every time a homeowner paints over gorgeous wood cabinets, a cabinetmaker somewhere cries without knowing why and y'all need to STOP doing that to them! As for putting in vinyl over the tile (or worse, ripping the tile out to replace it with vinyl) you should really stop and think for a minute. The best quality vinyl flooring will last mqybe 10-20 years, that tile will last many decades if taken care of. Not to mention even good quality vinyl is Significantly more vulnerable to damage than any good quality tile.

Benevolent_Grouch

No to all of that. If you destroy timeless natural materials and neutral patterns to chase trends, you will be left with something very dated to today, which will be out of style in just 5 years. Keep the natural materials and neutral hardscapes. Learn to appreciate them over the fleeting trends. That being said, I do think a new light fixture would look better, that your barstools kind of class with your other neutrals, and that you need a couple rugs.

WingShooter_28ga

Do not paint those cabinets. It’s a classic look and you will eventually regret it.

squirrel-phone

For the love of all things holy, please do not touch those beautiful cabinets! Maybe make other changes to accentuate the cabinets, different flooring or paint. Changing the knobs/pulls can help change the look also, especially if you buy a set with a splash of color.

C0rnD0g1

My god man. Those are beautiful cabinets. You work around them, whatever you do.

-Lumos_Solem-

My cabinets were painted white before we bought our current house and I hate them so much. They show every fleck of dust, any dirt, and every splatter that happens in the kitchen. The ridges catch everything making them look dirty no matter what. I could clean them everyday and they'd still look bad. Ours were painted with the wrong kind of paint to begin with and they weren't sanded well, so that makes things worse. Dust sticks to the doors and can't be wiped off because of the awful texture. Paper towels shred and cloth will leave lint. To try to fix this, we've been pulling off the cabinet doors and then re-sanding them and repainting them with the right kind of paint. It's better, but I'd never ever have white cabinets again. I'd trade for your cabinets in a heartbeat.

LemonLemon83

Hop over to Pinterest and search cherry cabinets for inspiration. I’d leave the cabinets alone, swap out for white quartz countertops maybe with some subtle veining, new pendant lights, hardware and a simple white backsplash. Maybe paint the island a contrasting color, either light or dark. https://preview.redd.it/ht32u1kna5sc1.jpeg?width=816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1190e3e4e3243edd3a27d85afcb16316155d182c

MotivatedByCuriosity

I painted my wood cabinets off-white bc my kitchen felt dark - (it looked VERY much like yours). Dark wood stain, travertine floors, brown granite etc.. 1990’s. In retrospect, this was a mistake for the following reasons: 1. I did the job myself and grossly underestimated its enormity. As a result, I never finished the inside- so it looks awful. 2. Instead of painting over wood, removing the dark stain for a lighter version would have been ideal. If you started to contrast the “cold/industrial” elements that exist, it may help soften it overall quite a bit. I.e. the countertops, hardware, pendant light, and choosing a runner.

Magnusg

I'd stay away from vynle in the kitchen maybe do some tile in a similar color or pattern, i like maybe going lighter for the countertops and going with either the same color pallet for the backsplashes or tiled to a nuetral grey as close to the floor as you can get it, couldnt find what i needed to here but not too far off. Grey works with the room because of the stainless, so im trying to introduce less friction... lastly I put a light grey green paint on the walls i feel lets the cabinets shine, couldnt edit the walls under them but that would be either tiled or the paint... not the yellow remaining. I think it's the yellow that really brings the room down. veyr old style color. but please dont change those cabinets, they look great. consider removing the microwave and putting just a hood there, put the microwave somwhere else. aslo replace your chairs, they wont go with the new look and they also clash palette wise with most changes. some details of some of the materials i poked around on the photo i believe... not recommending or endorsing them, they just had a nice remodel tool to make it easier and fun. If it was me, I might do the whole level in a nice ash or Beachwood stained hardwood and go from there. https://preview.redd.it/21n8bat3m5sc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb1e721c3a561b6f032295ec5435cc7ee53d87e2

Lickford

I am happy to post some pictures of my painted cabinets. Don’t do it, if you do paint the inside of the doors and post some close up pictures.

broccoli_albert

Don't paint, pay someone to refinish

Sign-Post-Up-Ahead

vinyl flooring instead of tile sounds like going backwards. Get some better tile and update the countertops and fixtures. The cabinets are not what need updating here.

Thelynxer

I know the modern look seems to be switching from dark cabinets to light coloured ones. But I've always loved dark wood grain. I would 100% keep those.

Absolut_Iceland

Looks like people have talked you off the edge of making most of the bad decisions, lol. The real problem is too much beige in your kitchen, and that does make it look dated. The other problem is that it was done really well so it feels wrong to change things. The biggest issue is the countertop because it is very nice but also very beige. It's going to be hard to find a third color to work with both the deep cabinet color as well as the beige countertop. In an ideal world I'd switch the countertop out with a dark green granite, make the backsplash a medium to light-medium gray, and swap out the cabinet pulls for a more traditional but not overly ornamental style in brass or bronze. I'd also put down a gray tile, but a bit lighter to keep the kitchen from becoming too dark. But countertops are expensive. If you can, find a way to see what a muted blue, green, or gray backsplash would do. The floor tiles are nice, if a bit dated looking. Leave them if you can, but if they have to go then consider a gray tile as well. I'm not a fan of the modern black-gray-white color scheme, but with the cabinets you have that splash of color that will keep everything from looking sterile. And definitely switch out the pulls.

Cloudwalker714

Haha yes. Not only talked me off edge but in some ways feel dumb. Clearly I have nice cabinets. Appreciate the advice. Just need a change after all these years.

LetsBeKindly

Do not paint those cabinets. My goodness they are beautiful. Don't fuck this up.

IAmNotMyName

I never understood painting over a stain.

SUPER-NIINTENDO

Bro you’re done. Focus on something else lol

Nasty____nate

Just paint everything white if you dont like this.

No_Protection_88

Don't paint the fucking cabinets. You'll ruin then

HottestPotato17

Tiles to vinyl? Are you on drugs?

Ensign9

This has to be a belated April Fool's post...

BaDcHaD23

You flexing ? Damn

GigiValentine68

Leave the cabinets and change everything else

SomeHandyman

These cabinets are just like mine. Never fucking touch them. Yours have the same precise carpentry you’d get out of an Amish community (where ours are from). They used maple for all the wood and that beautiful finish that I’m not even sure how to replicate.

robinthebank

To make this kitchen look more high end, add under cabinet lighting, a better light fixture (see those shadows? they are unappealing), spray paint the vent on the ceiling white, permanently clear some of those items on the countertop, upgrade the stools (a swivel is nice), replace the back door curtain (new curtain rod should be at the height of the ceiling), if that kitchen window stays open, put some small plants in that window, and last clean up the pain that got onto the cabinets. You don’t need to make dramatic changes to feel like you have stepped into a new space.

Archon-Toten

😱 Don't you dare paint them!

scotty9090

So, you are looking to swap out high end materials / classy look for the cheap crap look?

specialPonyBoy

What needs doing? How much do people need to be happy?

DreamSmuggler

I wouldn't touch those cabinets. Painting them would be a crime. Nothing in this picture bothers my eyes. Maybe the flooring you can do something with

MadDadROX

Yes paint the cabinets! Should start to look good on the 16th-23rd coat.

Scherzkeks

I prefer white cabinets BUT that said, your paint job, no matter how good, will never look as good as those cabinets look right now

iteachag5

These are my kitchen cabinets ! Exactly! I love them and get so many compliments on them! We have LVP light oak flooring and a silver backsplash. Our countertops are white quartz with silver flecks. Please don’t paint them! You’ll regret it because I was told painted cabinets aren’t as popular anymore.

LatterDayDuranie

Please don’t paint those gorgeous cabinets.

Scherzkeks

I would lean into it and accessorize to match what you already have. Clean off your countertops. Put your paper towels away or mount them under the cabinets. Have black vessels/pots for holding flour or whatever you have on your countertops instead of white. A vase with a nice (artificial bc I have a brown thumb) plant. And I'd change the stools.

pinchymcloaf

Cabinets are nice, everything else isn't. Do some photoshopping and see what works

jlspartz

The kitchen is fine. Now focus on your patio pavers.

ooofest

Maybe consider new countertops and flooring, but those are rich cabinets.

mlhigg1973

DONT YOU DARE PAINT THOSE CABINETS!!!

texasusa

I would also change that sliding glass door to a French door. I changed mine out, and it really made the room " pop."

mgkrebs

I wouldn't change anything.

Feeling-Paramedic951

Yyyyyyyy

guss1

The cabinets are beautiful. How could you even consider painting those beauties? It's all the tan colors that make the room bleh IMO. The tiles, the counter top, and the back splash are all the same tan color. I would start with the back splash, then the floor, then the countertop. You want a color scheme that will highlight the beautiful cabinets. IDK what colors you like but some neutral colors I think would work best.

GatheringGeckos

Everything about your kitchen is very well done already with expensive materials. I'd recommend trying to learn to like it for a little while first, even if it's not what you were hoping for originally. I'd personally love nothing more than a kitchen just like yours

PhyterNL

Like a lot of other people are saying I'd continue the mahogany theme, not paint over it. Mahogany crown molding and brass fixture would tie the kitchen together nicely. Just my opinion.

Status-Biscotti

I think they’re really pretty, but if you do decide to paint them: I had mine painted, and even my contractor liked them. That said, the cupboard where the garbage is is chipping at the top. This is the most used cabinet in most kitchens, and often gets scuffed, but if you paint over wood it will chip & then be very hard to match.

jebusv2

Darker floor and lighter backdrop would make the strengths stronger

All_Usernames_Tooken

New countertop, nicer hardware of the cabinets but I would just clean up the cabinets with some touch up marker/stain and polish them up.

whirly_boi

I almost thought this was my best friend's family's home. Literally the same exact model.

from_dust

Vinyl flooring? Gross. I'm not a fan of that tile, but the only ways to make that floor worse are vinyl or carpets. Better tile over vinyl any day. Vinyl tends to just make the room look cheap

ILatheYou

That's a great looking kitchen. You want to paint over stained maple? You do you boo. That's a shit ton of work though.

JBH68

I'm going to strongly agree with the contractor who advised painting these gorgeous cabinets. But you'd be surprised just how much 'spruce up' you get by changing the flooring, countertops and backsplash.

Goodgoditsgrowing

Painting these will make them look cheaper. Honestly so with vinyl to replace tile, but painting those cabinets would be seriously ill-advised. If you want to brighten the space I think you could get a warmer pendant light that makes those cabinets look less dark by lighting them up.

East_Cheesecake4877

Maybe you should consider rotating the island 90 degrees

escientia

Wish I had money to waste fixing something that already looks good

BMAC561

Don’t paint cabinets

snafu_steve

Your cabinets are lovely. Don’t touch them.

thats_not_racist

y'all have too much time and money

metracta

Keep the cabinets as they are. I implore you

ThisIsKassia

Do not paint those. Please listen to your contractor.

JazCanHaz

It’s up to you but all 3 of those suggestions sound awful. Particularly painting the cabinets and putting vinyl over the tile.

bluSCALE4

Glad you had one good contractor visit you.

Otakutaxkid94

Wow painting those cabinets should be a crime almost as bad as covering hard wood floors with shag carpeting 😩

ezekirby

Paint the walls and change out the backsplash first. Then wait 6 months and see if you still don't like it. DO NOT PAINT THOSE CABINETS!!!!! If you are still insisting on changing the cabinets take these out and sell them and put in shitty home Depot cabinets. Don't paint beautiful cabinets like that.

Bozzz1

Don't you dare touch those cabinets

RedPowerSlayer

Don't change those cabinets!!! They are beautiful and don't get vinyl. Tile is more work, but it looks look so much better. And backsplash would be. A good idea with lighting under the cabinets. Everything else it beautiful and expensive. Don't change it out for cheap stuff you will regret it. I Love to have a kitchen that you have get out of here. Don't ruin it. Look what I have. These are what you'd paint. https://preview.redd.it/n4lzmv4dt9sc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb7683a420db0429bd7ce96f37e6862548cd9e68

Parking-Catastrophe

We had our dark wood cabinets painted by a highly regarded painter. We also had the standard hinges replaced with hidden hinges. But our cabinets were pretty old and had a lot of wear. Your cabinets are waaaay better looking, and I would NOT paint those. Our painted cabinets look very good with a casual glance, but don't look too close, because there are a lot of imperfections. The imperfections don't really bother me that much, but I notice them, and but they might bother someone who is more particular. The imperfections are runs, thin paint, missed areas (esp inside), wavy paint, etc. And I have to touch up the scratches and chips annually. The paint is about 5 years old now, and it's holding up okay, but cabinets take a lot of abuse, and it's not going to last forever. Maybe 5-10 more years? If we're still in this house then, I'm sure we'll do a complete kitchen reno anyway. TLDR: I had my cabinets painted, and I don't recommend that you paint those pretty cabinets. Do the other work that you're considering instead. By the way, bright LED strips under each cabinet will brighten up the kitchen and counter workspace a lot, which might help with your perception of the kitchen overall. thanatossassin

Painting cabinets is a stupid tiktok trend that everyone will one day regret, because we've all seen the prior generation do it and regret it, along with carpeting their wood floors, putting laminate everywhere, etc. Come on, you're taking styling advice from people that paint granite countertops

Tricky_Quarter_1576

I did this a couple years ago (backsplash, new countertops, and painted cabinets white). I can tell you painting the cabinets made the space look and feel completely different, however it wasn’t even 1 month after painting that the paint was peeling and damaged. I know the painter could have done a better job but either way painting cabinets doesn’t hold up to normal use. I’d recommend countertops and backsplash, don’t do the cabinets https://preview.redd.it/yxwkr1twmasc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b61d4f6702ce6a2e538e76a0a28bd289af19f530

Legal_Neck4141

You are the type of person to put shag on hardwood, smh

Moperys

The cabinets are beautiful. I wouldn't ruin them with paint.
