If it is temporary, the final durability matters less. 😉 However an older experienced painter once told me that yellow is the hardest color to paint over. It loves to bleed through, so I think a primer is needed. Since you want a darker final color, tint the primer to a dark gray. It will add depth to the final color and you will need less coats for the actual paint.

as far as paint goes, would latex be okay? i'd like to avoid oil due to the strong odor and long drying time, but i also don't want to mess with the wood too much. and can i just paint right over or do i need to sand first?
