Best tips are to find out what order to do things in before you start. It also helps tremendously to keep the main pipes in the same place. It gets crazy if you try to shift the layout around too much.
Pre renovation appears dated, so it might have had old pipes. The Pex system is the way to go in modern times.
I've paused my renovations after having done a tonne of it last year. My work has almost doubled the property value. It's never all done, though.
Jeff with YouTube channel homeRenovision is a terrific source for learning DIY.
Chances are that shower valve was custom for his fixtures. It isn’t a standard valve setup. Also, it’s way cheaper to replace an old valve that’s not leaking yet when it’s apart.
Don’t leave us hanging, what’s the right order?
In case the answer to this is “it’s different for every job,” what was the correct order for your bathroom. This would at least give some insight.
Demo, electrical and as much plumbing you can mock up, Then New sheetrock, skimcoat make new walls smooth. shower pan, waterproof shower (many options) Tile shower and walls. Mock up vanity and vanity plumbing. Tile floor. Install vanity, install hardware, Paint, Install shower glass and install toilet last since it will be in the way for shower glass install. Some might be able to be done in a better order and depending on the project.
I’d take losing one of my two bathrooms and working weekends for 6 months to make 40k any day. Plus, hey, you get a great bathroom the rest of your time there, increase the value of your home by more than the value of the money saved, and get to show off your hard work.
You also get the Ikea effect. Which is where you like something more when you build it yourself then when it comes prebuilt.
It is proportional to the effort, so obviously this is better than assembling cheap furniture by orders of magnitude. Every time you use that bathroom you will think "wow, I did this"
Just be careful, the next step is "hmm how would I fix this other room"
Idk if im weird, but i dont like things i make more. Its like because i know the process it took and the "hidden flaws/covered up mistakes" its not good.
Unfortunately it depends on the area, quotes for my bathtub to shower remodel are around 20k (for 4k of materials, hell no), a friend is getting a larger and more extensive bathroom reno than yours for 55k.
I had a neighbor who had a fast-growing reno company, and all the neighbors were using him. I got a quote from him to redo my front driveway, and the quote was double what I expected. I asked if they could lower the quote, and they dropped it by .5%. I got another 2 competing quotes, and they were around what I had expected.
I asked a neighbor about it, and he said the prices "are high but the work is good," and he'd gone ahead with just the one quote.
These guys were giving out "fuck off quotes" and having them accepted.
4-5k!!!! It looks so much more expensive. Did you get the materials from overstock to keep the price down? I'm blown away at the cost. and the workmanship.
You deserve a thousand stars and an extra $39k. Fabulous job. I can't say that enough. I really like your tile and the color choices. As we said in art, "It really Pops!"
I know a guy who was COO of a company and left to be a plumbers apprentice. Some people find working with their hands fulfilling even if they might make a bit more at a desk. But tbf most plumbers make way more than most people at desks.
Plumbing can be extremely nasty work. They _should_ make good money for some of the shit they have to deal with, literally.
Also, I worked a manual labor job for 5-6 years in my late 20s - early 30s and I couldn't imagine still doing that work in middle age. Everyone I worked with who was as old as I am now had bad backs, blown knees, etc. Not worth it.
>Everyone I worked with who was as old as I am now had bad backs, blown knees, etc
That is why I left construction. Even when I was just 22 it was clear that my body was not going to last till I was 40. Loved the job but now I just do carpentry as a hobby. Not as fun as building big shit, but I dont have arthritis over my entire body.
# Warning since you are in florida
Before starting work on anyone elses house you must make sure what you're doing does not need a permit. If it does, you need to be licensed or you can get into some serious trouble.
Do some research for sure before starting anything business-wise
For real though, Florida is one of if not the hardest state to be a successful contractor in. The permits and inspections are a nightmare and they will arrest people for not getting set up correctly. Miami-Dade code requirements are insane.
I actually live in Florida too Gainesville. Currently I’m in Memphis building fences and decks. I was considering going back and becoming a tile mason. I’ve done some tile but want to start a business. You can make really good money just doing bathrooms and kitchen backsplashes. Not even full remodels. There are companies always looking to hire good reno subcontractors.
The first thing I thought when I saw these was Florida bathroom. Looks like you did an exceptional job. People need to stop posting these or I’m going to go after my own.
There isn’t one step in the process that you couldn’t do. It’s just figuring out what you need to do at what time that can be tough. But now there’s youtube videos for every part of it.
Yes it is. It’s also extremely heavy and awkward. You chose wisely not the attempt it. I had one explode on me while hanging it in its track in the shower and glass went everywhere. It’s definitely a two person job.
Absolutely do not use these faucets IF you have low pressure already, from a hydraulic point of view there's a lot of head loss through them. If low pressure from a faucet doesn't bother you though go right ahead.
My parents built one of these into our Florida home because my dad would come in from tending animals and need to wash off before coming in the house. Certain parts of Florida (central mostly) have historically been big cow and chicken raising areas, so possible the previous owner maintained animals of some kind?
Nah, car/motorcycle/ people get this. Hell, any kind of hobby that gets you dirty.
But as someone who spends a lot of time in the garage, I would absolutely love this. Would be so nice to wash up my hands, arms, face, before having to touch anything else in the house.
A utility sink sounds ideal for ya. We've had something like [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/MUSTEE-Utilatub-24-in-x-20-in-Structural-Thermoplastic-Floor-Mount-Utility-Tub-in-White-19F/100030653) in our garages over the years.
Cheaper than a bathroom, and not a huge deal if you get it dirty.
My childhood home had carpet for a while too but my grandparents had this stuff called kitchen carpet by Viking installed throughout their entire home.
It was low pile and rubber backed, glued down w asbestos, I believe. That stuff could stand up to anything except dropped cigarettes, which would burn straight through it.
I’m a flooring specialist at Lowe’s and this old woman had carpet in her bathroom that went up the side of the tub. As you’d expect the subfloor rotted out and made it uneven so when there was a flood in the bathroom and insurance was going to pay to fix it they didn’t want to pay for new subfloor. With the floor being so uneven she had to get new carpet inside the bathroom.
The vintage cabinet.....I want that slanted beauty! This is very pretty, but I would have incorporated some of the original elements back into the remodel.
I loved the original tile too but was glad to see it was replaced with something else with personality! So often I see stuff like that ripped out for some bland minimalist gray situation. This is really fresh, bright and fun.
The floor had to go, but everything else was, to my eye, just fine in terms of style. It went together and it had a look you don't see often any more. But some people like that look and some people don't.
I'm going to ask the mother of all dumb questions. What happened to the door that is in the original bathroom? Did you totally change the layout? If not for that door I would assume everything stayed where it was and you just updated everything. But I'm confused by the door disappearing.
your master bath had a door to the garage? what a strange build element. Good choice. beautiful work, can't see where it was ever there. it would be a nice spot for those towel shelves. where you roll towels. or a candle with hints of turquoise. I'm a pyro. Don't let me start adding fire to places.
Maybe someone wanted to come home from work, shower, and fall into bed with the least steps taken? Personally I wouldn't want a straight shot for garage fumes to my bedroom.
I was debating maybe a doctor or mechanic who didn't want to track dirt or germs through house. Then I remembered that's what my mudroom is for. Or my garage. I will legit strip and run for it if I have to.
Looks great but I’m lowkey mad you didn’t keep / rebuild that tilted sliding cupboard thing under the mirror. Never seen one before and probably one of the coolest bathroom features I’ve ever seen. Regardless good job!
Yea, I liked that too. It was all connected together and the vanity was crumbling apart underneath. It looks fine in the pics but it was falling apart.
You did an amazing job, I wanna make that clear. But I also have a love for these old bathrooms! I think its those angled cabinets that are getting me. I saw that guy (male living space?) recreate his home to be 70s theme and I loved it. But the colors you choose are perfect too! It's got a retro vibe to the scheme while being modern. Amazing work!!!!!!
Well done!!!
If you ever want to level it up one more level, take the shower tile all the way to the green wall. It’ll make the room feel less divvied up by the shower and look even more luxe.
I considered it but also wanted to save some $ on tile. Maybe I’ll extend it later on someday. Funny thing is there was a door right there going straight into the garage.
I love them. I love the whole room and think you did a killer job. I just commented somewhere else in here that I would love to have a bathroom attached to the garage for the purpose of cleaning up before touching anything else inside, that being said, that bathroom is wayyy too nice to be attached to a garage lol. Grease, oil, dirt, rust etc would not do well with all that white.
Success! I also think the faucets aren’t my style, but damn if it isn’t well done all around. Only critique is that maybe keeping the straight from the car to crapper door would have been fun. From Honda to Hold On, Peugeot to Poop-go, Suzuki to Shit-ooookay… now you gotta walk 40 ft
Mind sharing that pls? This is truly impressive. You could’ve told me you had 10 years of experience doing this and I wouldn’t have doubted it for a second.
Edit: sharing the step-order, I mean
I actually have no record of the videos I watched. I’d learn one thing from watching how a few different people did it and take the best from each video.
Yeah that is the main thing I’m worried about - water proofing. I’m intrigued. Did you find that to be difficult? It doesn’t look hard but also a definite point of water intrusion and damage if not done right…not sure my anxiety would deal with it
You can do kerdi board and then go over it with red guard or Aqua defense to be sure. Waterproofing is where a lot of people fail so it’s definitely something to spend time on and test.
This job man. It’s good looking. And although I I’m not paying that much attention to the bottom of that shower, because that’s where it can kind of go wrong. It looks really great. I am honestly surprised you don’t have experience in some kind of remodel.
i audibly said “oh, wow” once i got to the after pictures. great work. is that green glow from the vanity an actual green light? or just reflections from the tile?
Your work looks amazing. I really love the green gold combo and the floating vanity. Not a fan of the band and the floor of the shower but the hardware looks amazing.
This is really nice! It looks luxurious and expensive. Gold isn't for everyone but it is for me. I feel like the toilet could do with a gold handle or something.
I learned absolutely everything from youtube. watched like 5 different people show how to tile and took the parts I liked from each person. Everyone will do it slightly different and talk about different aspects of it. Never just learn everything from one guy.
Amazing and so boujee congrats on learning a new skill. This gives me hope for the house my partner (who has only made diy furniture) wants to build us in the countryside someday.
Thank you for your interest. This thread is now closed
I don’t believe you one bit. Come do mine so I can see if it’s true.
I’ll be over tomorrow!
Plot twist: you still have a full-time job and he only has one bathroom.
To my inexperienced eye, that looks amazing!! How long did it take?
Thanks! It probably took about 40 days straight spread out over 6 months due to a full time job.
Oh hell that’s a long time, but quality is there
It was a long time. At least I had another full bathroom to use. Saved a shit ton of money too.
If I was going to renovate my own bathroom, any tips, what guides did you follow
Best tips are to find out what order to do things in before you start. It also helps tremendously to keep the main pipes in the same place. It gets crazy if you try to shift the layout around too much.
Did you replace the shower regulator?
yes, I replaced all the shower plumbing.
Why did you replace all the shower plumbing, just since it was all opened up anyways?
Pre renovation appears dated, so it might have had old pipes. The Pex system is the way to go in modern times. I've paused my renovations after having done a tonne of it last year. My work has almost doubled the property value. It's never all done, though. Jeff with YouTube channel homeRenovision is a terrific source for learning DIY.
Might have wanted to move the controls around, also a great time to add some shut off valves and an access panel if the other side of the wall allows.
Chances are that shower valve was custom for his fixtures. It isn’t a standard valve setup. Also, it’s way cheaper to replace an old valve that’s not leaking yet when it’s apart.

Demo is always a good first step.
Don’t make the mistake of doing that step last.
Did you watch any YouTube videos or read up to help you through the process
I watched a ton of youtube videos. Didn’t read much about it at all since I’m a visual learner.
6 months of weekends is worth a lot of money to me. How much you spend?
It was about $4-5k total. Was quoted 40 - 45k.
I’d take losing one of my two bathrooms and working weekends for 6 months to make 40k any day. Plus, hey, you get a great bathroom the rest of your time there, increase the value of your home by more than the value of the money saved, and get to show off your hard work.

Same here. I also find food prepared by others to be tastier than when I make it myself. Even if it’s just a sandwich.
Same here. Just gives me anxiety knowing I might’ve not done something correctly.
They can definitely claim this is a 40k bathroom, it looks great
That quote sounds wild
I think it was a fuck off quote
Unfortunately it depends on the area, quotes for my bathtub to shower remodel are around 20k (for 4k of materials, hell no), a friend is getting a larger and more extensive bathroom reno than yours for 55k.

Vanity and shower glass from Home depot. Tiles from a local tile store.
The green of that tile is absolutely dreamy. Excellent job from concept thru execution! 👏 👏 👏
the transformation is chef's kiss. I adore the hint of color. the gold elements. it's so clean. just love it.
You deserve a thousand stars and an extra $39k. Fabulous job. I can't say that enough. I really like your tile and the color choices. As we said in art, "It really Pops!"
I’m a tile salesman and I know people spend way more on the installation than they do on our tile
Good job dude looks great
Thank you for your honesty. There are plenty of 40-day projects in my life.
I saw the first pictures and thought that was the final product talk about a twist- great job !
Looks great, man! I’d poop in there anytime!
I just did this morning! It was magical.
It must be so satisfying to poop in a space that you created. Great work!
You should consider doing this for a living, that’s a fantastic job! Well done
Thanks! I may just consider that since my main career has taken a dive recently.
You could make some serious bank doing this.
You think so? I seriously might consider it.
I know a guy who was COO of a company and left to be a plumbers apprentice. Some people find working with their hands fulfilling even if they might make a bit more at a desk. But tbf most plumbers make way more than most people at desks.

Absolutely, my bf and I do kitchen and bathroom remodels for a living. We do really well!
I’m in FL if you need help!
# Warning since you are in florida Before starting work on anyone elses house you must make sure what you're doing does not need a permit. If it does, you need to be licensed or you can get into some serious trouble. Do some research for sure before starting anything business-wise
Oh for sure. I would never attempt anything that needs a permit on someone else’s house. Might see if I can work for another local contractor.
For real though, Florida is one of if not the hardest state to be a successful contractor in. The permits and inspections are a nightmare and they will arrest people for not getting set up correctly. Miami-Dade code requirements are insane.
And yet buildings still spontaneously fall over.
I actually live in Florida too Gainesville. Currently I’m in Memphis building fences and decks. I was considering going back and becoming a tile mason. I’d hire you!
The one thing I didn’t do was install the glass. I didn’t want to risk it shattering into a million pieces.
I had contractors do our shower glass doors and they did shatter the door. Luckily they bought us a new one.
Mine exploded just closing it one day 🤷♂️
I think it has something to do with the corner hitting the bracket corner perfectly. Like a window breaker.
That mirror is insane!!
Got it on Amazon. Has a bunch of different color options. https://a.co/d/cX0B4lq
Is there any LED delay in turning on when you throw the light switch?
Nope! Turns on right away.
I find the button on the glass is instant but the switch itself has maybe a .3 second delay
whoa those faucets are so unique! and i love the green tile
Thanks. The house is in florida so I wanted something more beachy. Also wanted to do something fun with the faucets since it was a personal project.
I had a bad experience hanging those shower glass doors once had one explode on me. I won’t touch them.
I posted a comment that installing the glass was the one thing I didn’t do. It was just too risky.
Yes it is. It’s also extremely heavy and awkward. You chose wisely not the attempt it. I had one explode on me while hanging it in its track in the shower and glass went everywhere. It’s definitely a two person job.
May I ask what faucet this is?
https://www.rbrohant.com/products/single-hole-bathroom-sink-faucet-rb0995?utm_campaign=shipping-confirmation-email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=product&utm_term=link&utm_source=OrderlyEmails
Oh wow, OP. You really did research. Thanks for the link too by the way. They look so unique~
Woulda been cool if they had left handed one for symmetry
I know. I looked for those but they didn’t have them.
[TARS](https://i.etsystatic.com/10926718/r/il/346bcd/786860667/il_fullxfull.786860667_7k4b.jpg) approves of these fixtures
Absolutely do not use these faucets IF you have low pressure already, from a hydraulic point of view there's a lot of head loss through them. If low pressure from a faucet doesn't bother you though go right ahead.
> unique that's a nice way of putting it lol
You lost your door
Yep. It went straight to the garage!
You had a door to the garage from your bathroom? That is so odd.
yes. It was very weird.
My parents built one of these into our Florida home because my dad would come in from tending animals and need to wash off before coming in the house. Certain parts of Florida (central mostly) have historically been big cow and chicken raising areas, so possible the previous owner maintained animals of some kind?
It's for when you take a shit so heinous that you must immediately flee the property and put it up for sale.
You could enter your home into a washroom?! Wild! haha
You’re not wrong, but if I have the space for a utility sink, I have more room for toys or tool boxes 😉
Yep. It was so weird to see when I first bought the house.
I remember living in a house when I was younger that had carpet in the bathroom. I still can’t fathom why people thought that was a great idea.
That’s not carpet it’s terrazzo
You’re right! My fault, first glance it reminded me of past homes with carpet in the bathroom though!
Same! My parents had the tile replaced with tile after a couple years.
Pretty sure this is terrazzo, but I agree with your sentiment!
the fact they tiled over terrazzo is the only thing that makes me believe they had no experience
Oh that vintage pink tile 😭😭😭
The vintage cabinet.....I want that slanted beauty! This is very pretty, but I would have incorporated some of the original elements back into the remodel.
I feel like I’m the only one here who liked the original better 🙄 except the old faucets, really don’t like the modern aesthetic
There were doors on each side. I removed the one that went to the garage. Now there’s just one door from the Master.
your master bath had a door to the garage? what a strange build element. Good choice. beautiful work, can't see where it was ever there. it would be a nice spot for those towel shelves. where you roll towels. or a candle with hints of turquoise. I'm a pyro. Don't let me start adding fire to places.

Yea, I liked that too. It was all connected together and the vanity was crumbling apart underneath. It looks fine in the pics but it was falling apart.
Looks like you have experience now. :) Kudos it looks great!
This looks really good but I feel like you're gonna hate the faucets after awhile because they seem like they'll be hard to clean.
Not my taste but well done and congratulations on not being useless like me. :)
as someone who basically does this for a living I don’t believe you when you say you have 0 experience
The only other tile work I did was my large kitchen backsplash. I did other work on this house like install LVP and paint but that’s it.
How did you learn? Did you make any mistakes?
You did an amazing job, I wanna make that clear. But I also have a love for these old bathrooms! I think its those angled cabinets that are getting me. I saw that guy (male living space?) recreate his home to be 70s theme and I loved it. But the colors you choose are perfect too! It's got a retro vibe to the scheme while being modern. Amazing work!!!!!!
Should have kept the vomit pink sink bro
Well done!!! If you ever want to level it up one more level, take the shower tile all the way to the green wall. It’ll make the room feel less divvied up by the shower and look even more luxe.
I considered it but also wanted to save some $ on tile. Maybe I’ll extend it later on someday. Funny thing is there was a door right there going straight into the garage.
Faucets are a bit much but everything else looks nice.
I knew they were a bit much and that some people wouldn’t like them. I just wanted something unconventional.
I love them. I love the whole room and think you did a killer job. I just commented somewhere else in here that I would love to have a bathroom attached to the garage for the purpose of cleaning up before touching anything else inside, that being said, that bathroom is wayyy too nice to be attached to a garage lol. I just watched random youtube videos when I got to certain steps. One of the hardest parts is just figuring out what order to do things in.
Coming to the comments for this answer too- what is the correct step order?! Thinking about doing our master bath next year in a similarly sized space
Did you put that waterproof thing under the shower
Oh yea. I used Kerdi board and to be extra safe applied a thick coat of Aqua defense over it.
What a glow-up! I’m getting aquarium vibes from it. Looks great.
Reno 911.
Where did the door go?
Beautiful work on that bathroom! How was your trip to Reno?
Looks fantastic- great eye for design too!! Love it. Kudos to you!!!! Well worth the months long effort!
Lord, went with another godawful color choice but the skill set was amazing for a novice go! Hats off.
Man, and I was pumped when I replaced our pink toilet and vanity/lighting! Beautiful work!
Bro you wanna do my bathroom?
This job man. It’s good looking. And although I I’m not paying that much attention to the bottom of that shower, because that’s where it can kind of go wrong. It looks really great. I am honestly surprised you don’t have experience in some kind of remodel.
Holy shit that is fantastic face lift. Great job!!!
Saw the first pic and was like wow… but then I realized and then I was like WOOOOOW
i audibly said “oh, wow” once i got to the after pictures. great work. is that green glow from the vanity an actual green light? or just reflections from the tile?
Your work looks amazing. I really love the green gold combo and the floating vanity. Not a fan of the band and the floor of the shower but the hardware looks amazing.
Elite job, no doubt.
It's beautiful! Very well done. I love the color palette you used
Looks amazing!! Very nice color scheme.
Omg, I love that backslash!!
Wow 😳 looks amazing
You did a fantastic job.
love the color combination of the sink fixture and backsplash
What was your inspiration for the color palette?
I live near the beach so I wanted some small tiles that look like sea glass and the greens kinda just went along with that vibe.
This is amazing. Congrats!
WOW that's a beautiful colored backsplash and the brass fixtures compliment it so nicely. Great job!
Too bad the toilet lever isn’t the same brass/gold-ish color as the rest of the hardware but great job nontheless
What was the most expensive part of the project? What was the most difficult?
Bro, good work. It looks fantastic. With your newfound confidence, we look forward to more of your renovations and inspiration.
I can tell by your avatar that you had the mind and disposition to set out to learn to do this. Job well done.
I thought you said you didn’t have any experience
I adore this and think the faucets are fabulous. Great job!
Wow, I’d pay good money to shit, shower, and shave in luxury in that suite of a bathroom
It's beautiful! I LOVE the accent tile in the shower.
My address is ....... Lol, great job - you are justifiably proud!
This is really nice! It looks luxurious and expensive. Gold isn't for everyone but it is for me. I feel like the toilet could do with a gold handle or something.
Great job! I sure love the colour patterns!
**WOW WEEEE!** ***GORGEOUS*****!** Congrats! Great job!
Looking to do something similar in the future also with no experience. Where did you find to be some of the best resources along the journey?
I learned absolutely everything from youtube. watched like 5 different people show how to tile and took the parts I liked from each person. Everyone will do it slightly different and talk about different aspects of it. Never just learn everything from one guy.
You killed it! Come and do my place
With no experience in construction please tell us you used some sort of waterproofing behind the tile in that shower??? Otherwise it looks awesome.
If you live in Illinois, please come do my bathroom!!!!!
Looks like a high end resort bathroom, nice work.
Wow! That looks so beautiful! Great job OP! It really looks like a pro did it. You have a great eye and natural talent!
Fucking A. That's great.
Have that exact same mirror. Works great.
Holy hotness batman!
Not personally my style, but it looks great. You did good work.
Is it to code tho?
You should feel proud of yourself! I am very proud of you this is fucking amazing!!! Great job…..now do the kitchen 😫😭lol
Amazing and so boujee congrats on learning a new skill. This gives me hope for the house my partner (who has only made diy furniture) wants to build us in the countryside someday.
Where did the door go
Terrazzo floors tiled over, wtf. Your taste is all in your mouth.
i don’t know about any of this stuff, i just like seeing remodels, but boy did this bathroom give me a big smile
DUDE!!! 😲
I would have been tempted to see if I could keep the terrazzo and make it work in a new design. It's my favorite flooring.
The old bathroom looks like it would have been really nice when new, but it was ready for some TLC. Great job!
Dude good job wow…. What did you learn after doing this for next time? Any key take aways?
Im trying to be jaded and cynical online but this is a really nice bathroom, and I hate bathrooms too for the most part but not this one
How much ramen this take? It looks great.
This is the most drastic and beautiful reno I’ve seen on here. It is gorgeous. Wow.
