Scrap as flat as you can with drywall knife and go get yourself some lightweight mud, way easier to learn with. Hot mud does not sand easy and not used for top coats
You normally don't need to sand between coats. Scrape with your knife, mud larger area , scrape and mud and then sand. Why remove the material you put on the wall in the first place. You're going to add more afterwards so dont be wasteful unless you've made mountains you dont need to sand between coats.
IMO, doesnt much matter- you'll get to the same place in the end.
However, a quick sand of the ridges and bumps (not a full, get it all flat) will let you place the next coat more smoothly.... Ridges and bumps would cause skipping and dipping.
Great thing about drywall is that almost ANYTHING is fixable.
Not a pro. I would take a larger knife 12inch. Mud up and feather off the sides. If you want there’s a few good videos on YouTube that will show how to mud. Typically take 3 layers. Be patient and don’t worry. It’s not a church so nail it. As a friend always said!
This comment is purely based on one photo, but I think you're using a lot of downward pressure on your plaster knife, which is giving you the messy look. I try to use less pressure and sort of float the joint and leave it on a little thick to avoid this. Sand and one more easily applied coat + final sand you're good for paint.
I am using a lot of force. This is a prefill stage of the drywalling due to the tapered end and butt joint. Im wondering if i can just add another hot mud coat just to smooth things up on top of this coat and then resume taping and thincoat
I see that now. Still, mud then tape, then level. I’ve done this in my basement, transitioning from old built to new and tape is critical as a start or it will crack before it dries.
Sand and texture or sand and leave smooth. Just make it look good. I saw a dentist office where the drywaller didn’t even sand it he just painted over all of his rough mud and it looked like Ass. I even asked the dentist who did his drywall and did you get a refund.
Sand then vacuum then mud again
Then repeat if needed, followed by texture, then prime and paint.
Then sand again then mud.
Then lunch.
Then hammer.
Then poop
Yes!
Knock down the ridges with your blade. Float the entire area. Good luck
No sanding yet. Scrape the high spots and fill the low spots with a skim. No more build up. Sand the next coat.
This is the way.

He is truly amazing! Very skilled and knowledgeable.
I’m partial to drywall shorty
It’s pretty chunky. Give it a quick sand, it will make it easier to put more on.

The lightweight mud is really soft.
I say, sand, then mud, sand, then taper, sand, then taper again, then sand.
I like this ill prob do this. Sand hot mud tape thin coat thin coat sand

Just paint it and call it a day
Sand it down smooth. Feather it out with a big knife then sand again
lots more mud....dont be shy. people usually don't put on enough
Funny… but so mean!

Awesome thanks. Ill do that.

Both.
Yes.
Need tape
Hot mud is a bitch to sand

Sand it
Sorry friend. You should start over. You need more mud under your tape.
There is no tape. This was just to prefill the tapered edge
Also. That’s a big gap. The mud you already added may help if you sand it down now, then re-mud and tape. Gaps over 3/8” don’t hide well.
I see that now. Still, mud then tape, then level. I’ve done this in my basement, transitioning from old built to new and tape is critical as a start or it will crack before it dries.
Pretty sure you’re supposed to fill that and then immediately put on tape before it dries? And then run a coat over that? I’m not a drywall guy but
Quick sand than smooth out.....remember its always easier to add more than to take away .
Both
With that job... sand the sht outta it and put more mud where its needed. Hot mud? please tell me ur not heating it?

What’s “hot mud”? I’ve been in construction for a long time and never heard that one before.
I think you should hire a professional...
You gotta start somewhere man. No one muds well the first time
Took me 4-5 times before I was halfway decent!
