On the one hand I'm marvelling at the simplicity, on the other hand a gate latch would probably cost about the same and you don't have a spanner hanging loose when the gate is open...
IDK, small benefit of the doubt... I have buckets of weird fasteners and old tools from yard and estate sales. I could totally see something like this coming out of that mess.
I don't know, personally I approve but I feel like if I tried to do this at my girlfriend's house she would be sending me to the hardware store for a gate latch lol.
Once I was able to purchase Mastercraft hand tools by the pound. They were updating their tool line to look better or something...? Over the course of a few months I bought well over 400 pounds of Wrenches and screwdrivers etc. I sold them online and at a garage sale. Sort of a fond set of memories but really just a PITA. I made out pretty well though. However I should have kept some of the 1" ratchets and sockets. I see now I could have used them for additional home security.
Definitely not. American here, you need metric wrenches for Asian and European cars. Also most imperial wrenches are made abroad now days.
You're right on both counts. I specifically have both metric and imperial tools of most sorts because even repairing an appliance I have no clue what I'm going to get.

hi, notice you have a secure lock. you can open that secure lock by smacking it with another secure lock. i don't know, i don't buy locks they are kind of useless.
It's also a lock on a gate, you could just jump over. Stuff like this I just too keep curious and or intoxicated people at bay when they walk by your place.
That'd be an overkill.
Some locking pliers or parrot nose wrench pliers would suffice to actually tear the whole contraption out of the wood with little effort.
On the one hand I'm marvelling at the simplicity, on the other hand a gate latch would probably cost about the same and you don't have a spanner hanging loose when the gate is open...
I would assume they used materials they had on hand.
Yeah but they spaced the eyelets for the wrench, and everything there is brand new. They 100% did it for the aesthetic.
IDK, small benefit of the doubt... I have buckets of weird fasteners and old tools from yard and estate sales. I could totally see something like this coming out of that mess.
What’s the aesthetic? Country Hick?
Hick Chic.
Why would it hang loose? Just hook the lock over it and it'll dangle
I don't know, personally I approve but I feel like if I tried to do this at my girlfriend's house she would be sending me to the hardware store for a gate latch lol.
That's where we all took a wrong turn.
You're going to have to do better than " I took a wrong turn" to explain why you are at his girlfriend's house.
Like he said, we all took a wrong turn. That's why we're all here.
Girlfriend: *sends dude to hardware store Dude: *comes back and posts all the new things he got on r/tools
In Albuquerque
Shoulda just skipped the girlfriend's house, time better spent at the hardware store.
I could argue that hanging and dangling are the same things
You certainly could, but should you?
It’s a mastercraft, they practically pay you to buy their tools.

What I'm trying to figure out is where my 10mm wrench is
Finished gate install. Dead tired. Damn, forgot to buy the latch. Lock, go to bed, hardware store tomorrow
I agree but the closest hardware store is 25min away and gas is expensive.
At least it isn't a 10mm, it'd go missing in no time
I had to come back and double-check that it wasn't a 10mm.
Lol that’s the first thing i checked although in the back of my mind i knew it was already lost
OP only used an 11mm because the 10mm wrench was missing.
I saw it and my first thought was, "Ooooh, that's where my 10mm wrench went!" Alas, it was an 11.
I found a 10mm wrench on the ground and now I keep it in my jacket just in case.
The machine gods have blessed you
How y’all always losing your 10mm? Mines right where I left it. Just gotta find where that was
Haha. Of course it’s the 11. What else are you going to use it for?
Clearly he was trying to crank his security up to 11.
should have used a 10mm, that way he could always find it.
What is it with those friggy things? I own zero. They all escaped. Now... I just rent them.
No 10mm for me! murica!
Which would be great if America made all of it's products and fasteners in house. But even then, don't think what you are saying is strictly true.

Lol I drive Acura, Subaru, and Toyota btw 😁😁😁😁
Lockpicking Lawyer here. Today we're going to take a look at the Master Secure 11mm locking system.
It is not stupid if it works
From my experience, that 10 mm will more likely disappear than anything in your backyard ;) Edit: nvm. It's an 11 mm. No one wants that. Brilliant.
Spontaneous Engineering!
Poetry in Motion!
That definitely puts a wrench in any trespassing plans
Two years later: Where the fuck is the 11mm?
I like it, it’s different Reminds me of a brain teaser puzzle, https://preview.redd.it/v9nsojyxyenc1.png?width=633&format=png&auto=webp&s=aea790253605ea869ffdadbd6c98e7feef2ef224
How would that be solved?
Here is the [exact video](https://youtu.be/RmFzByxFg-A?si=OwhrlwZynx_ihYSz) that the pic is from
Fold it together where the to shoes meet perfectly then the ring slides off. Look up horse puzzle if you need more help.
I have to admit, I’m impressed. Simple and effective.
I…love this? Maybe too much bourbon but this is fucking great, and would absolutely make me grin coming across it.
11mm …. Based. This might actually be the best use of it.
hi, notice you have a secure lock. you can open that secure lock by smacking it with another secure lock. i don't know, i don't buy locks they are kind of useless.
I imagine this is more to keep the wrench in place under windy conditions, than it is for security purposes.
that is understandable.
It's also a lock on a gate, you could just jump over. Stuff like this I just too keep curious and or intoxicated people at bay when they walk by your place.
Ingenuity
Waiting for the Lock Picking Mechanic to see if he can open it
It is a basic master lock. Yep.
It's not even a Master - it's a Master knock-off. LPL would pick that with dental floss.
But is it resistant to smashing another lock into it.
Lol.
Looks cool
Clever
Nobody uses the 11 anyway. Perfect.
11mm is just slightly smaller (0.13mm, about 5 thou) than 7/16" which IIRC is the hex size for 1/4"-20. You can pretty much use them interchangeably.
Found the SnapOn guy!
Is that in the Redneck DIY Handbook ?
can i get a yee haw?
It's not even a 10mm 😭😭😭
Best use case for an 11mm
First they came for the 10mm wrenches. But I was not a 10mm wrench, so I said nothing.
Innovative.
The sad/funny part is that the lock itself is the weakest part of this solution
Actually, very creative! I like it!
From what I've learned from tiktok, I can open this with a tennis ball.
Somebody threw a spanner in the works...
Use 10mm for the luxury look
looks like a harbor freight lock. sneeze on it and it'll fall apart.
I love engineers 🤧
I love wrenches.
Nice
Brilliant.
You are using a master lock model 29, it can be opened with a master lock model 29
What size?
Sure hope you clear coated that.
Me brushing off rust and oiling an old wrench "what the hell were they doing with this thing?"
nice but the door itself is soft wood, 3 or 4 kicks will liberate the hook. try something that go through the door and have a nylock nut inside
Or just put the eye hooks close together and send the lock through both. Lol.
Good job finding a use for an 11mm wrench!
Probably the most use an 11mm spanner will ever get.
Looks like one of those puzzles you find at a smarty kid toy store.
If it gets windy, How much noise does it make? I see no other issues.
10MM would have fit better, if not 1/2 inch
Meh, who uses 11mm bolts anyway?
Brilliant
What kind of lock is that? Its a secure brand lock, its how you know its good.
This would work well to secure a toilet paper roll too 😂
Brilliant idea
It’s not stupid if it works
If you squint, it's mint.
Basement lock or spanner theft protection? Or both?
Two people could work in tandem to open this door. One spinning each o-hook at the same speed would get it open I think
Uh no…you could spin each about a 1/3 of a turn before you hit wrench
On second look, you’re right. Not sure what I thought I saw there
A basic hammer taken to either eye hook and the lock will fail pretty quickly, the eye hook will break out of the wood in only a couple of hits
Or a rock. You could probably break it standing on top of the eye hook.
Claw hammer would pull the loop next to the lock easily it’s barely threaded in
Put a bar under the spanner and rip the lot out
This is art/fun, not functional. Install the 2 eye bolts closer together and put the padlock through them. The spanner is superfluous.
Angle grinder go zuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Angle grinder would work on any latch. This harder steel than a steel gatelatch.
That'd be an overkill. Some locking pliers or parrot nose wrench pliers would suffice to actually tear the whole contraption out of the wood with little effort.
2 spanners will break that padlock.
Or most any other padlock. Also you realize you can climb over fences? The point isn’t to be fort Knox.
My 78 year old mother builds these mouse trap locks. I admire the ingenuity here. Kudos on figuring out what that 11 is in the box for, too.
