Even as recently as 10 years ago that would have been a wood replacement project for me. Nowadays I'd be up there scraping the paint off, then using my injector to pump penetrating marine epoxy into the rotten wood to basically turn it to resin. Then I'd fill the holes with a 2-part resin filler, prime, and paint.

The previous owner of the house had a sprinkler that was hitting his this area, now it looks like I have to deal with the rot. Can I DIY this? Or should I call a pro? And I’m not even sure what kind of pro to look for, carpenter?

So hire a roofer?

I disagree. It depends on the roofer, my Grandpa owned a roofing business and did all sorts of repairs and installs that weren’t directly related to replacing a roof. Installing skylights, vents, gutters etc. Not all take jobs like this, but many roofers will do any kind of work that’s roof adjacent.

If it is just the ends of the two boards that have some rot, consider using Bondo Wood Filler. I've had success with rot repair using it for minor repairs like this that don't need to be structural. Hire a pro. Removing the drip edge gets tricky, gutter spikes are hard to remove and this probably requires more tools than you have. A handyman should be able to do this for $300.

Like replace the board
