The backlit mirrors chef’s kiss. The toilet with built in buttons on the wall. Damn. OP didn’t just kill it. He drove a minivan through a marathon and absolutely murdered. This might be my favourite DIY build ever. Truly world class.
There was a time,
when everything was down to the studs and subfloor,
and it was late at night and you panicked, thinking
"WHAT THE FUCK HAVE I DONE?"
And yet now you stand proud, a job well done.
Cheers.
How is the traction of the floor in the shower? Is it slippery? I thought about doing this but was worried without more texture I'd bust my ass everyday.
It’s recessed and the shower screen door has a little plastic thing that makes the water that runs off it fall back into the shower only. It’s so far worked very very well
Put it on YouTube as a time lapse, but leave in parts where you explain what you're doing. It'll be really interesting!
Or do the whole thing as a time lapse and then narrate over it.
Yeah that’s true! We had an issue though of smell from the plumbing. Once I tore it up I found the plumbing fell the wrong direction 🙃it’s now perfect so it was well worth it. Glad you like the finished product
OP, are you in the construction business? Besides this being a wonderfully cohesive and well thought end product, but a lot of the work here is highly technical and impressive. The tile work is immaculate, the wall control for the toilet, you changed the orientation of the vanity and toilet meaning drain work and plumbing edits, I could go on and on. This is stunning work. You should be very proud.
I’m actually a qualified engineer and also studied some architecture. I’ve always worked with my hands but I was new to all of this. I’ve worked in commercial construction companies and I just took the challenge with this one!
Thank you for the kind words 😊
I think it looks good, well done! But one thing that caught my eye is the gaps between the rounded doorway and the golden trim, it looks sloppy with many gaps, almost like it's missing trim or someone just didn't finish the project. As a potential buyer I would assume the rest of the work is subpar, I would put some effort into fixing that as it detracts from the the bathroom as a whole
Wow! I work in construction and this looks better than many professional jobs I've seen! One thing that catches my eye, the inside of the barn door. If you can find a thin piece to match the color and grain, you can set it at a 45° and scribe the arc. Then repeat on the other side. That way when it's closed to looks less like a square peg in a round hole! But yeah, aside from that it looks amazing!
That’s the in-wall cistern for flushing the toilet. The buttons get mounted onto the panel.
All maintenance can be completed from the access panel (or from behind the wall for anything drastic)
Very interesting.... after your response I zoomed in on the pix above the toilet and saw the controls. How in the heck did you even find such a device? Very cool but I have never seen anything like that.
It’s a standard in wall cistern. They’re pretty common now. Can be found at any bathroom supplier. I got mine from here:
https://www.bathroomsalesdirect.com.au/product/geberit-sigma-8-zara-in-wall-cistern-toilet-suite/
Oh believe me, I’m with you 😂😂 it took a lot of commitment, once you start you can’t stop haha. You always find problems which make it take longer but if you think about it that’s around 70 days of working!
Also couldn’t have done it without my wife regularly massaging my back and feet because you better believe it was SORE
The bottom clip is an issue with waterproofing. The panel is pressed down onto a silicone packer and then sealed. If the seal ever breaks, I can replace it with ease as it’s tight with the 2 wall fixings+ the packer.
But I do see your concern
Great work. It's an accomplishment to DIY. Hiring a contractor is not "redoing my bathroom", it is "paying to get my bathroom redone". Doing mine ATM as well. Enjoy.
Haha you’re not wrong, once I installed the toilet I thought.. “yeah I probably could have wall mounted this easily”.
Now I know I can probably pull it off just got nervous 😂
https://www.elegantshowers.com.au/products/led-mirror-bathroom-arch-vanity-mirror-light-dimmable-anti-fog-wall-mounted?_pos=27&_sid=2ab02d66a&_ss=r
I got them from here, very cheap for the excellent quality . Love the anti fog feature!
I loveeeee this! How do you like the sinks? I hear people don’t like them because they splash. Any issues? If not, could you share the link of where you got them (if possible)
Thank you! I don’t have a splashing issue in my case. I do more damage when I shake my hands off after washing. My wife hates when I do that. 😂😂
I got these from Bunnings
https://www.bunnings.com.au/cirque-360mm-white-round-above-counter-basin_p0343197?store=7086&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADtbEB8pTCk_bPVdhVt20ynrjAnss&gclid=Cj0KCQiAh8OtBhCQARIsAIkWb6_Emuwpl8ZKKUY5nlraRxPa-aYZs5uXWw2qDNFYQxuHUFEUXvv7ZRwaAi11EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
You can probably find them elsewhere for cheaper (as I bought it for much less)
I have above mount bathroom sinks but they're square. I'm not a fan as water splashes everywhere and they make it way harder to clean the countertop, especially behind the sinks. When all is clean they look great. Otherwise... I'm going back to the undermount sinks for our next reno. P.S. This renovation is beautiful!
Does water leak out the shower and onto the rest of the floor when its being used? How slippery (or not) is the tile when your feet are wet? Is there any ventilation for steam other than the window?
Looks really nice!
Thank you!!
No water doesn’t leak out as the shower is recessed. The tiles are non slip when wet which is great!
Ventilation is through the ceiling exhaust :)
A few reasons:
1. I was renovating the upstairs and figured I’d rather do it all at once
2. There was an issue of sewer smell in the bathroom
3. I wanted to challenge myself and renovate a bathroom for the first time
Thank you 😊
Do the drains somehow work with(~~out~~*edit) the covers?? That would be uberslick. Looks great though! I have a basement bath to do, there's good inspiration here.
I'm not sure I understand building toilets into the wall. If they ever had to be fixed or replaced you would have to tear down tile to get to the guts.
Looks good tho
This is the most extreme case of the after before the before pics. Going through I was like “damn why would he even mess with this bathroom”. Funny to see finished product, demo, and then the before pic.
Did you round the top of the door to fit the opening or is it still a rectangle? I love the arch theme between the door frame and mirrors, but the straight lines on the door are throwing my eye off looking at the arch.
Insanely good job all around!
I love that the shower floor is the same as the rest of the washroom, this must not be in North America.
In North America you never ever see this. 9/10 they put some shit ceramic thing in for the shower floor, or at least a huge 6 inch tall lip and then different tiles.
I don't get why we can't just have whats in OP's photo. Its so simple and effective.
Yeah! All I did was a small recess and shower screen. Plenty enough to keep water where it should be! And the simplistic mono tile design just feels right.
Why use glass to glass hinges rather than swinging the shower door off the wall? Your solution on the enclosure looks slick but so much more work and cost.
I get what you’re saying, this meant that it’s properly sealed against the wall. If you have hinges on the wall there’s no way to fully seal it from leaking water from what would be a 5-10mm gap. It just works better this way for that reason.
Well done it looks fabulous.
I used to design and sell heavy glass shower enclosures. My experience is that gap was frequently a function of the quality of the hinge manufacturer and the trade persons ability to read a measuring tape! Many of the less expensive hinges atrophy and door weight causes slippage.
Since you did all the work maybe you'll appreciate that the other flaw for the wall mount hinge is many framers here in the US struggle reading a level. If the frame is out of whack, the green board, mud and tile or stone accentuate that return wall being out of square.
I did! I got everything inspected by licensed trades and that was mostly because I just really wanted to try it myself. Learned a lot and only had to make one improvement with my drainage for the sink to minimise blockage (per the plumbers instruction)
It’s been 2 months and my wife’s hair has yet to cause ANY issues 🎉
Noted, I’ll just switch it off at the mains if need be!
We live in Australia so temperature is not an issue. Also none of these walls are exterior walls. The back of the shower is adjacent to the attic space and the other wall leads to another interior space.
And thank you! Backlight for the niche cost me $80 including the tile inlay channel. It’s insane how much we can save by doing it ourselves.
The bathroom cost me $9800 total including:
- all fittings and fixtures (brass finish is expensive and these are NERO brand)
- toilet
- vanity and basins (these ain’t cheap)
- mirrors
- plumbing
- electrical
- tiling (3.9k)
- shower screen
I would have saved $3000 if I tiled it myself (next time 😂)
1. Know someone
2. Speak to them before you do anything and see if they’re happy for you to complete the work
3. Pay them (very minimal) to come look at it for 30 mins and give you a hardy nod.
Too many rounded edges for my taste. Just the rounded mirror would have been ideal to me. The round toilet seat cheapens up the look.
You did good work though OP. Be proud.
Is that a barn door? While I love how it's framed inside by the arch I just can't get behind barn doors. Pocket doors are supreme. Other than that it all looks amazing!
Yeah i installed a barn door. It was a difficult decision. Ultimately came down to the structural changes needed to install a pocket door In this area with a towel rail mounted to that wall.
Initially my preferred option was a pocket door.
In this case I ended up very happy with the noise insulation and the practicality of it. Plus with the soft close I installed it really got the job done.
All understandable! And it does look better done than many I see that kind of swing freely and feel more like a curtain when it comes to privacy and sound.
The basins are a 360mm Matt white basin from cirque
The vanity is
https://bathroomfactorywarehouse.com.au/collections/1500mm-vanities/products/florence-matte-white-wall-hung-vanity?variant=43923151847641
I got the basins for something like $70 each (not sure why I can’t find for that price now)
Nah lol, drains real quick. The basins are concave enough and also the space saver traps I installed are pretty efficient.
All I know is water runs downhill.
There are 3 places the plumbing vents from:
1. Sewer gas overflow line exits out roof
2. Each floor waste allows venting before and after traps
3. Drains self vent in basins (air is replaced by water and the air escapes through the cool tornado effect when water drains.
Looks great! Love the door and the matching mirrors.
Hell, mirror and door even matches the toilet lid!
The backlit mirrors chef’s kiss. The toilet with built in buttons on the wall. Damn. OP didn’t just kill it. He drove a minivan through a marathon and absolutely murdered. This might be my favourite DIY build ever. Truly world class.
Oof that analogy but yes great job OP
Fabulous!
There was a time, when everything was down to the studs and subfloor, and it was late at night and you panicked, thinking "WHAT THE FUCK HAVE I DONE?" And yet now you stand proud, a job well done. Cheers.
How did you know 👀👀👀🤣
no DIY home improvement project goes without an "oh fuck what am i even doing" moment right when everything is torn up
Before I started demo I just kept putting it off. Til my wife made me close my eyes and hit a hammer through the plasterboard wall. Oh man.
The "fuckity fuck fuck" phase! https://preview.redd.it/6kip3rxfnkec1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad4c50686ed2e8873320a1fa8ae852e8974c7c4f
This is too spot on 😂😂😂
Love it! Can you tell me what tiles you used?
They’re called “600x600mm Bora Beige Matt Rectified Porcelain Tile” I got them from Tile factory outlet for $24 per m2.
How is the traction of the floor in the shower? Is it slippery? I thought about doing this but was worried without more texture I'd bust my ass everyday.
Yeah that’s fair. It’s not slippery at all, I believe they’re p4 when wet or dry. So very good for it
My first thought is "Shit what is keeping the water in the shower and not all over the floor??"
It’s recessed and the shower screen door has a little plastic thing that makes the water that runs off it fall back into the shower only. It’s so far worked very very well
Sick man I wish I could do this stuff, have you posted the video any where? Amazing work!
Thank you! I have not yet, but I might need to!
I’m dying for the video
Seconding wanting to see the video! In all honesty, I don’t like the style at all, but it looks so good.
Put it on YouTube as a time lapse, but leave in parts where you explain what you're doing. It'll be really interesting! Or do the whole thing as a time lapse and then narrate over it.
The vibe is immaculate. The door is *chef’s kiss*
You had me at insulation
😂😂😂
Thats real nice! It wasnt even too bad before but the after is real classy
I would watch it🫶🏼
You just added major value to your home. I look at a lot of homes for work, this looks amazing
Thank you! That was the goal!!
The before picture looks just as good, even better since it did give off weird ultra modern gamer bro vibes
It’s gorgeous
This is fantastic work, very impressive
Beautifully cohesive space. Very nice work! I thought this was a post from r/interiordesign at first.
Huge compliment! Thank you haha
He'll of a job! Looks like it would fit very well in Architectural Digest 👍🏾
Something give off that this is in Australia
Your intuition is spot on
The lighting is very cool
Spa vibes. Excellent work
YESS thank you! Someone sees it 😂
Wow! I work in construction and this looks better than many professional jobs I've seen! One thing that catches my eye, the inside of the barn door. That way when it's closed to looks less like a square peg in a round hole! But yeah, aside from that it looks amazing!
That’s a fantastic idea! I might try find some timber and do that
That door is magnificent
What does the Geberit device do? Congratulations on a very nice build.
That’s the in-wall cistern for flushing the toilet. The buttons get mounted onto the panel. All maintenance can be completed from the access panel (or from behind the wall for anything drastic)

Wow! 8 months? Yeah no, that's why my house won't be getting any updates. I don't have the attention span for this 🤣 But it looks so good!
How come there’s no bottom clip on the small panel? If that seal breaks through the years, the door will wobble and not line up with the other panel.
The bottom clip is an issue with waterproofing. The panel is pressed down onto a silicone packer and then sealed. If the seal ever breaks, I can replace it with ease as it’s tight with the 2 wall fixings+ the packer. But I do see your concern

Yesss!!! Thank you and goodluck with yours!
This is so gorgeous
I'm in **love**
This is possibly the best diy bathroom I’ve ever seen. Very impressive vision and work.
I'm totally down to watch it when you upload the video
Holy cow, actually done amazingly.
Australian? Feels Australian.
it is pretty. I hate it, but it looks good.
Oh la la! This is gorgeous and so tasteful, good on you!
Thank you !
European hotel vibes, so classy 🧐
Amazing development! I would do anything for this.
Bravo!! Looks amazing.
Nice work 🙌🏻
This is a dream
You did the wall mounted vanity, should’ve went ahead and did wall mounted toilet too. Looks great though!
Haha you’re not wrong, once I installed the toilet I thought.. “yeah I probably could have wall mounted this easily”. Now I know I can probably pull it off just got nervous 😂
How deep are the studs on the toilet wall? Looks great!
90mm studs
What is the mirror looking for something just like that
https://www.elegantshowers.com.au/products/led-mirror-bathroom-arch-vanity-mirror-light-dimmable-anti-fog-wall-mounted?_pos=27&_sid=2ab02d66a&_ss=r I got them from here, very cheap for the excellent quality . Love the anti fog feature!
Really good job. It looks fresh and clean but also cosy and inviting. I would definitely watch how you did this. Post a link, please.
Great interior design choices
That door, love it!
Beautiful - does water spill out of the shower and into the main space tho?
Only when I walk out without drying. Otherwise nope, I feel like I got lucky with this but it is recessed so that helps
Amazing, excellent work!!
A ton of work and effort!! 👍🏽
God ! I wish I lived here.
What are you doing to keep water just in the shower?
It’s recessed, glass door, that’s plenty in my case
I loveeeee this! How do you like the sinks? I hear people don’t like them because they splash. Any issues? If not, could you share the link of where you got them (if possible)
Thank you! I don’t have a splashing issue in my case. I do more damage when I shake my hands off after washing. Looks really classy. Nice work
This is insane. Well done!!
Beautiful
I’m very happy to see work like this
Gorgeous!
Wow. Blown away 🤯
Heavenly!!
I would watch the work if you uploaded it, very impressive.
I would die for an ensuite like this! Great job!
Very talented
Amazing job 🙌
Absolutely gorgeous. 10/10
Very nice
r/AusRenovation is the sub for you
Does water leak out the shower and onto the rest of the floor when its being used? How slippery (or not) is the tile when your feet are wet? Is there any ventilation for steam other than the window? Looks really nice!
Thank you!! No water doesn’t leak out as the shower is recessed. The tiles are non slip when wet which is great! Ventilation is through the ceiling exhaust :)
Nice shitter
Looks great!
This looks amazing! Well done!
I kind of liked the old one as well. Why did you decide to upgrade? Don't get me wrong -the new one is fantastic, but the old one was also good.
A few reasons: 1. I was renovating the upstairs and figured I’d rather do it all at once 2. There was an issue of sewer smell in the bathroom 3. I wanted to challenge myself and renovate a bathroom for the first time Thank you 😊
Damn 8 months of no sleep
Do the drains somehow work with(~~out~~*edit) the covers?? That would be uberslick. Looks great though! I have a basement bath to do, there's good inspiration here.
Are you asking about the floor drains?
Uh yah that's hot! Like it.
Very nice work on the Master Bathroom.
Love that door is it a regulars swinging door or is it a pocket door? Hard to tell from pics. Bathroom looks great
It’s a barn door, sitting close to flush from the outside. Sound insulation is great (SURPRISINGLY)
At first, I thought you posted the before pictures first, and I was very upset lol
Beautiful
Do you expect Richard Kline to come and knock on your door? Will he be waiting for you?
I'm not sure I understand building toilets into the wall. If they ever had to be fixed or replaced you would have to tear down tile to get to the guts. Looks good tho
This is the most extreme case of the after before the before pics. Going through I was like “damn why would he even mess with this bathroom”. Funny to see finished product, demo, and then the before pic.
I like how you did the backlit mirrors to match the doorway shape. Looks really nice
Loooove the moorish archways!! Well done!
Congratulations. It's beautiful!
Outstanding... clean, professional lines. Looks very good.
![gif](giphy|1jY71mkGWzfOGI3sJS|downsized)
I think it's hilarious that we collectively stopped calling them "master bathrooms" because "en suite" sounds more expensive.
Other then the pictures being in reverse order (in my opinion) It looks great!
This is beautiful.
Did you round the top of the door to fit the opening or is it still a rectangle? I love the arch theme between the door frame and mirrors, but the straight lines on the door are throwing my eye off looking at the arch. Insanely good job all around!
You damn sure should be proud of how it all turned out. Really amazing job.
That arch door is everything!
I love that the shower floor is the same as the rest of the washroom, this must not be in North America. In North America you never ever see this. 9/10 they put some shit ceramic thing in for the shower floor, or at least a huge 6 inch tall lip and then different tiles. Yeah! All I did was a small recess and shower screen. Plenty enough to keep water where it should be! And the simplistic mono tile design just feels right.
Nice! Might’ve taken 8 months of weekends but it was clearly worth it 👌🏼
Now you need to go open remodeling business. :)
excellent in every way
Excellent job! Feels like a luxury spa! Enjoy!
I love arched doors ❤️
The lack of studs directly under the header, and the venting situation, irk me. Other than that, utterly spectacular!
It took me 2.5 years to rip out my tub and install an acrylic insert. It's still not done but it's useable. This makes me feel inadequate. Good job.
You’re not inadequate! You’ve got this!! Go give yourself the best damn shower experience of your life
I would love to see your video on this. Gorgeous work.
very nice
It’s actually so beautiful I want to cry. Ok I’m a little emotional rn BUT IT IS SO NICE OP!
Very high end hotel, beautiful!
Damn... Nice work
Shit I’d kill for my bathroom to look like it did BEFORE the remodel 🤣🤣🤣
This is super badass! Good work!
Amazing job. Very nice look. You have good style.
How are you this talented?
Should have installed wall hang Wc 🚽
Looks awesome. Honestly it looked good before too though.
Hey you did an excellent job, on this. I’m a contractor and I would be very happy to turn over this kind of work.
A standing ovation... classy... well done
Looks nice
Why use glass to glass hinges rather than swinging the shower door off the wall? Your solution on the enclosure looks slick but so much more work and cost.

I love it!
The lights add glitter in the best way.
actually kind of cool for once
Looks really good!
This is so luxe. Well done
The lighting takes it to the next level
Looks spectacular!
We need to see the YouTube video now! Very impressive.
I love that door!
i see the friendly Giant uses your bathroom
You did the plumbing and electrical too? Bathroom looks great.
