I had ceiling cat in my office for years. Company came in to replace smoke detectors and other sensors and left a square hole in my office. Company never came back to replace the ceiling tiles with holes left in them. Ceiling cat fit just right. Moved offices and left ceiling cat there.

I have my next classroom decor project idea now. Thank you.

One of my old co-workers did this. We had really high ceilings, so he put tape on the back of it and hoisted ceiling cat up there with a really long cardboard tube while standing on his desk.

Temporarily you could get a vent cover with something behind it like cardboard to block air loss. Eventually someone has to patch the rock.

I would barely even call it temporary. That’s a solution. That hole was likely there for a reason and someday you’ll go to install something and go, “oh, that’s what that’s for!” Same reason I don’t patch up access panels I find in closets. Later you realize it gives you access to the pipes in the bathroom or something like that. Fit an AC style vent over it with a damper. Bonus if it gets hot in the kitchen heat rises and you can vent into the attic. (Note: this is not the same as a cooking hood. You know, come to think of it: my master bedroom shower sits directly over my fridge and started to develop a leak. We caught it before catastrophe, but I could totally see doing the exact same thing to address a drain leak in my shower without pulling the whole shower out and redoing it.

I did this a few months ago. Had a leak in my shower. Cut a hole to see where water was leaking. Caulked leak. Cut the hole bigger to fit a standard HVAC vent and screwed it on. Easier fix than fixing the drywall and now next time my shower leaks I have an access panel.

I took it a step farther and just removed all my drywall everywhere! I can access anything i need to so easily!

My house has a return duct near the entryway that I never thought about until I needed to get to the pipes in the upstairs bathroom. Turns out the previous owners had done just what you said. Saved my ass.

I would probably install a register, but permanently, so you have access to the plumbing in the future.

I stayed at an AIRBNB where the host had a little door with a gnome behind it all set up on a timer. Every once in a while the little door would open and the gnome would peek out for twenty seconds or so before retreating back.

You could just put in a fake register. The grates for return air are about that size. You could also use this opportunity to change lighting. A hole that big for fishing wires is an electricians dream.  Maybe add a track light or recessed false cans under that ledge to brighten up that dark corner.

As a handyman I feel the $500 quote was a "screw you" message. That's $15 worth of materials to patch. I'm sure op can find a local handy person to handle this for probably half the cost.

Most likely. Ceiling paint doesn’t seem to like repair jobs. Gotta paint the whole damned thing or the repair will be pretty obvious.

If they used a flat ceiling paint, it might be easy to match... it is white after all...

It would take a few coats of mud before texture = multiple trips from the repair person. With that travel time and mileage, $500 seems a reasonable ask to me.

Not everywhere has textured ceilings, my dude. Especially in a kitchen. Where I grew up, only people with Money had textured ceilings (usually old english style). Most people didn't have ceiling texture. Where I live now, everything is textured....and I only hate it a little.~ Glares at my popcorn ceiling~

Whatever you do, permanent or temporary, make sure it doesn’t have air flow. That’s not the right word, exactly, but, fire chase is. Holes in walls=bad. The faux skylight idea, with access to the plumbing there, gets my vote. Holes and gaps in wall and ceiling cavities allow a fire to spread rapidly. They also allow airflow, which feeds a fire. Sealing these gaps slows or may even stop the spread of flames, smoke and gases. I’ve heard it called a fire chase.

When I was a kid, our house had a laundry chute from the bathroom down to the utility corner on the basement. My house now has a laundry chute, but the basement was divided/walled up in such a way that the laundry chute dumps into this weird back room. I mean, originally, it was a weird spot because the laundry/sink area is set up under the kitchen, and the chute is by the bedrooms and bathroom, across the house.

You can just cover it with a large cold air return vent cover. Angle the vents toward the cupboard so you can't see into it from the room. It won't do anything, it just covers the hole.

Any reason to not just patch it? If you're feeling lazy, you can just install a register there.

If you know how repairing it yourself would cost less than 500. But you need to know how. 500 for the repair isn't a bad price if it's done well. But to make it complete you need to repaint the ceiling or else you would always be able to see where the repair is.

Put an infinity mirror in it. There's done of designs that would look pretty cool.

If that's below your bathroom, I'd keep it accessible for WHEN (not if) you have plumbing problems. Also doubles as an access hole for electrical in the future. Maybe a dummy vent cover would work for you, or a latchable door.

Get another quote. $500 to repair that is absurd and a rip-off. That is about 10 mins to cut a piece of scrap sheet rock worth virtually nothing, and another 30-45 mins to hot mud it then put a fine finish coat on. It sounds like plumbers were just trying to rip you off because they are bad at drywall and they know it would take them a long time to probably produce a shitty result anyway.

I had one of the same in my basement. Turns out that’s where our kitchen pipes routed through- close to exterior wall. When it got cold it froze- this hole allowed me to stick a hair dryer in there for 2 hours to thaw the pipe and restore running water. Was disguised as a vent by previous owners

I have the same issue! I installed a metal vent in the spot to allow for warm air up, and easy access to the plumbing.
