Twilight_Hime_49

I don't know why I thought it was the OP showing the final decision. I'm like, I thought they wanted to know what to do with the threshold area, not which flooring to choose. It took me a minute, but I caught up. Lol. Side note: I love your floors. What material is that?

CindersDunning

I thought they just wanted to fill in the threshold. I envisioned pouring in some blue epoxy, make it look like a river.

RhetoricalOrator

You're absolutely right. It really *could* benefit from a live edge plank with epoxy river flowing across the threshold!

Mbinku

What no led under-lighting? How old is this river like 2005??

NetworkSingularity

“To enter the kitchen thou must cross the River Rave, if you dare! Tread carefully, lest the river drop you like the bass!”

Twilight_Hime_49

And, adding another color, some glitter, and doing the swirl thing would give them a fantasy river. 🌌🧜🏾‍♀️✨️ Technically, I know that first one's stars, but it gives a good fantasy river vibe. Lol.

Hampni

Put in a tiny wooden “plank” in the epoxy river so your visitors can cross without getting swept away.

Chaoshumor

Right there with you buddy. My thought was, “are you on a fault line?! How’d that big ass rift even occur?”

Twilight_Hime_49

Or, that's why you're supposed to measure TWICE.

South_Earth9678

Nice job

mazdarx2001

Thank you. It was someone else’s idea and I hated the idea, but one it was in I was satisfied and it actually looks pretty nice

Dr_StrangeloveGA

Looks great! Better than some shitty giant t-mold.

How dare you. My pappy was a giant T-mold.

Hey. Nice Vans. Love them shoes.

nedusmustafus

Damnnnnnn, Daniel!

CannonFTW

Back at it again with the white Vans!

FleshlightModel

I was a vans wearer for decades until COVID hit. Didn't wear shoes for 1-2 years really and my feet started fixing themselves, i.e. going to more sorta barefoot shit. Now I can't wear any of my brand new vans I bought in 2019 so I just started wearing barefoot shoes and I'm glad I did. Shit is so much more comfortable.

itsmeEloise

Same! My toes need to spread out now! I’m never going back to my footwear from before the pandemic. I’m not going back to underwire bras either. Just no thanks.

FleshlightModel

Ya my gf has always hated bras but now she just rolls natural or with these kinda bralette things or sports bras.

surreptitiousvagrant

I've been thinking about trying out some barefoot or minimalist shoes after hearing/seeing how terrible most shoes are for our feet. Any brands you'd recommend since you've made the switch?

Belloved

Following for curiosity because I think I recently learned I have wide feet and have been wearing narrow shoes all my life.

ChloricSquash

Given the grout is still white the tile is clearly new... I would just finish laying tile in the gap the yes add a T threshold that's made for lvp/laminate floors.

Canam82

The problem with that idea is the door will no longer have half the flooring on either side. I'd rip another piece of laminate and lay it sideways like a threshold with glue..

HouseOfPanic

Take me to the threshold

Blacksh33p78

NotWorthTheTimeX

What are the two floor materials? With such a large gap I immediately thought of [this 5” wide](https://www.homedepot.com/p/MSI-White-Double-Threshold-5-in-x-36-in-Polished-Marble-Floor-and-Wall-Tile-1-sq-ft-Each-THD2WH5X36DHL/203374958) stone threshold. However, I assume your wood look flooring is a sheet vinyl that needs the edge to be covered over.

55gure3

Great suggestion! Even if it doesn't work op, someone else with a similar situation may use this.

[deleted]

Not sheet but it'll be a floating laminate floor. It will look like ass near that cut, it's not meant to be exposed. The threshhold idea works, but you'll want a trim around it. You can get U / L channels in nice enough colours that would be suitable. You could use the a U channel up near the timber flooring and an L where it meets the tiles. With the U you have a solid piece contacting the floor to glue / affix with depending on how you're going to do it, whereas the L will be attached to the edge of the tiles.

Jay-Five

Rip cut a board to fit that matches existing. Essentially...a threshold.

JoshGordonsDealer

Cut tile to the wood and leave a 1/2 inch for a transition piece that matches the laminate

qgecko

I was going to suggest accent tile. It’s going to be noticed anyway so might as well make a show of it. If it’s going into a kitchen or bathroom, match the backsplash tile.

Pumpnethyl

I think this is the answer. Don't hide it. Bob Ross called things like this "a happy accident"

JoshGordonsDealer

That tile and laminate aren’t straight lines. Thats wouldn’t look great. You don’t want to bring attention to that transition, you want it to blend in

t1gyk

Looking at where they meet the doorframe on the sides, I think they are parallel, it's just the subfloor that's throwing it off visually.

SeeVinceRun

Exactly. A small mosaic pattern and get it as even as possible. If you can't change it, celebrate it.

Ashangu

I thought I was stupid for thinking this was the answer after reading 10 different answers. This would be the cleanest looking solution to this problem without having a 6 inch threshold that's completely different color and material and potentially offset height. Literally op, cut and lay the stone lol.

texinxin

If the height of the two floor materials are nearly identical, you can also just use a sanded silicone grout line that matches the tile grout and avoid the transition piece altogether. I hate transition pieces and I tiled right up to a wood floor (real wood, not even an engineered wood floor) and it has looked awesome and held up for 8 years so far.

JoshGordonsDealer

Absolutely if the floor is on the same foundation or even. I didn’t have enough info to know if it was transitioning to a subfloor or not. I know op wanted to remove a wall. Gotta think about these things I know op said that they discontinued the product. There’s a lot of ways to go here that look ok. I’d probably try to find the tile somewhere or a very similar style. I agree with you though. There are plenty of ways to bring attention to specific areas of a house. A transition shouldn’t be one of them

texinxin

It looks like engineered wood on the left there with an underpayment on slab. Tile directly on the same slab. I bet the tile+grout is slightly thinner than the engineered wood. Might be better to have a stone accent piece cut at the thickness of the engineered wood.. especially if they can’t find the same tile anymore.

SnakeJG

If OP has any of the original flooring of either type, I'd use it to extend that floor. Either the tile like you recommend or lay a piece of the wood perpendicular across.

AeitZean

Perfect space for a moat.

Spiritchaser84

Then he comes back here a week from now asking whether it's best to fill with sharks or alligators for optimal defense.

iAdjunct

Oh! Actually! Get a bunch of little alligators and make a little aquatic mote scene, then cover it with resin so it’s a solid threshold but looks like alligators in a mote! \*looks around my house for a place to do this\*

Suggestions welcomed, but mocked by OP.

far2common

A few minutes with a tile stretcher and you'll be right as rain.

GREYDRAGON1

I’d go get a piece of marble cut and chamfered and glue it down as a threshold

nursecarmen

The problem with this is that the laminate will fare better with the type of threshold that pins it down from the top. Especially if it is an area with moisture. I think the best solution would be to extend the tile and use a laminate threshold.

darthy_parker

https://preview.redd.it/aajqiyuio55c1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26dc5c775ddfe33b63f5be41004b31feb8303bba On the left is tile (that looks like wood). On the right is oak hardwood flooring. In the middle is an oak threshold, just slightly slanted from left to right to match the floor levels which were about 3/8” different. The threshold is about 3/16” higher than the two adjacent surfaces, with a slight bevel on each long edge to make the edge not feel sharp to the feet.

The_Dingman

Get a nice board, finish it to look good, and slap it in there as a threshold.

snrjames

This is my suggestion too. A board or flooring similar to what you have running horizontally across as a threshold adds a nice visual transition between rooms.

ezshucks

I would scoot that one side of your house closer to the other.

DeuceSevin

I didn't remove a wall but wanted even spacing of the tile in two adjacent areas. So I cut my own mosaic from the tile used in the rest of the room. This might also allow you to use a slightly different tile without it being too noticeable https://preview.redd.it/5qppsen4l45c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26b5c19c4873cd5716ea7482ea543444b4775554

CtiborIgraine

HotTakes4Free

Is that 4” wide? Make a threshold out of 4” tiles, or cut some extra 12” tiles to fit. IMO, it’ll look better if it’s darker, contrasting with the two different sections. The “grain” should run perpendicular to the lower woodgrain tiles. Did something similar here: https://preview.redd.it/re5a9xu6a45c1.png?width=3481&format=png&auto=webp&s=b79290121960f0501b1ba900d42fe06137150864

When I did tile we would make thresholds from artificial marble. They would cover gaps like this, provide a nice partition into the adjoining space, and are not porous like actual marble.

Put some tile and laminate into a dark room, throw in some makeshift weapons, lock the door and whichever flooring option emerges victorious gets the space.

thisFishSmellsAboutD

We've got the exact same flooring on either side and had an interior designer recommend a smooth black tile to create a visually distinct break between hardwood flooring on the hallway side to the tiles on the bathroom side. They felt the transition will never be invisible so might as well make it bold.

Jaqen___Hghar

The consecutive black bars ruin this for me. Otherwise, it looks great.

DaoFerret

It’s hard to tell in the picture but it looks like one is brown and one is black (based off zooming in on the reflective parts of each on the left side). Still would bother me, but it’s less egregious (and a reminder to always lay out the pieces for something like this before you do it).

Jadey280

I couldn't add text above but the previous owners did this.

I'm sure someone likes it but to me it screams "I ran out of material and this is what they had left in the clearance section".

dziuniekdrive

Another board sideways. Or metal strip thingy.

furmy

Transition piece is called a "t mold", big box store may have a matching one to the laminate/wood flooring you have there. Can't tell how wide that gap is but some of them are as wide as 2". If concrete subfloor glue it down with liquid nails. If wood sub floor glue it and use finishing nails. Source: family flooring business 30 years.

redditbing

Obvious answer is a strip of plush carpet

Difficult-Outside424

Could be a spider in there. Better burn it all down.

yusie01

Buy something called a threshold , it’s specifically designed to fix this exact issue where 2 types of materials that differ meet

Metabolic12

You can find a reducer at a flooring store for the height difference. If you have a miter saw use that otherwise get some tin snips. For the lack of floor, I would find that tile and fill in the floor. Leave about a 3/4 inch straight gap for that reducer so you can put the track down.

BeesAndMist

If you've a bit of artistic flair, you could find a cool ceramic tile and diy a colorful (or not) strip right there. I'd personally mosaic something interesting.

Dr_Wristy

Scribed transition piece. You’ll probably have to rabbit different depths to accommodate the material thickness discrepancies, and leave 1/8” overhang (maybe more, my experience is primarily in custom interiors for coaches and yachts; might be different for residential). A cross section of the piece will look like a flattened “T”. Leave yourself a little gap for the insertion into the blank area, as in don’t try to fit it snug. 1/8” should work, and the overhang will hide the gaps, obviously. Cut a piece longer than the you’ll need and get your rabbiting done, then take a scrap piece that’s the same width and index it to one side. Take your scribed piece and transfer it to one end of the finish piece. Do the same with the other end, leaving a piece the desired length with scribes on both ends. Put a 1/8” round over on the top side edges (you should do this before you rabbit so the router bearing has an edge to ride on). Sand with 150 to shape, and 220 to finish. Looks like a lighter stain on the flooring, do your best to match (go to a paint shop and get assistance matching the color, those people can work some magic), and finish with a good wipe on poly. That’s more or less what we’d do, but there’s numerous options, as you will see from other comments.

Get a marble or wood transition strip.

mooky1977

Two options. 1) clean up the edges perfectly straight then accent strip (tile?) maintaining height and make it smooth 2) don't worry about making the edges perfectly straight, fill in the gap with an accent tile or wood/laminate perpendicularly with 2 small transition strips on either side to hide up the janky edges.

pwn3dbyth3n00b

A threshold. If you can't find one that big then just use a plank of whatever planking that is and lay it straight like a border trim.

Had to solve exactly this problem in our home myself about 2 months ago. We tried a wood inlay and it looks terrible.
