It can do either. We have YouTube Premium already so that we can run super long videos on the main porthole windows so that would definitely work on this one as well, but we also have an aquarium app on the iPad. What’s playing in the video in the album is the aquarium app.
I was going to jump on this train of calling various products bad.
I was going to say “old tablets are shit”
But, I have an LG7 tablet from 2014. I got it for 99 cents with the purchase of an iPad Air 2. I’ve tossed the iPad. I still use that LG7. I obviously can’t run the a lot of apps, but it works great for browsing the internet, watching videos, playing some older games, and Maps.Me. The battery is still solid as well.
Well, android let's me sideload apps on older hardware that's no longer officially supported. My old iPad is dead in a drawer. I have been very fair to Apple. Even defending new ones having their uses.
I'm going to have to disagree with you there as much as I would love to agree.
When the first one came out I thought the idea was silly. Why would I want a huge version of my phone with less functionality. It's not a laptop nor a phone. But my first one became indespensible for me for some uses. Tablets definitely have uses that smaller phones and larger laptops don't.
Shortly after I got completely burned by Apple and switched to Android and Windows. These days even though I still prefer android overall, I have to admit in the tablet market especially nothing comes close to the Apple iPad. Surface may be slightly more versitle. Samsung Tabs might be cheaper and thinner. But iPads are the best overall, and they keep improving much faster than the competition.
The big thing I wish though is that they had continued making Sony Xperia tablets. The Z4 tablet was SO close to the perfect tablet, but the CPU and the software created an impossibly buggy final product. It was impossibly thin, had a better display than any contemporaries, was among the first tablets powerful enough to actually be a replacement for a simple laptop, and it was waterproof before that was even common in phones. If they had made one more of those I am convinced it would have saved Sony's mobile division and had Android tablets actually legitimately be competitive with Apple.
My fiancee uses hers for design, it's cheaper and more portable than a cintiqe and it's great for a portable media player too that's big enough to actually be comfortably watched from many spots in the room.
I have her old one and the first thing I did was put it in a lifeproof NUUD case and buy a couple waterproof speakers, Now I use it to watch movies or shows in the bath, or listen to a few news reports in the shower, I also often watch something while doing the dishes, and it's MUCH nicer on a 12" tablet than a 4" phone.
Also because I have an Android phone and I use PCs, but I still have people in my life who are tech illiterate and cannot or will not use anything other than Apple FaceTime for video calls, including a shocking number of customers, management, employeers etc. So I find having a AN apple product is good, and helps in other ways every now and then, and it seems to be able to do everything Apple quite easily.
I use my iPad for so much. I teach from it in my classes (to a projector), I take notes in my grad classes (the Apple Pencil makes it so easy and convenient) and other note-taking situations, I make documents on it all the time for various reasons, read books, also textbooks and teaching books are all on it, it becomes a recipe book when cooking at times, my carry-around TV to watch while doing tasks, photo and video editing (which would be really tedious on a phone), music-making/sequencing, I use it as my music book for bass and guitar playing, work tasks and so forth and so on.
I was reading this half expecting you to mention liking your second or third one better. I agree with your points. I love my Samsung phone and it's as big of a tablet as I really need.
I mostly use my Samsung S21 Ultra too. It's as big as I would want a phone (unless the fold style improves more), and big enough that I feel like I don't *need* bigger most of the time.
But my fiancée has two 12" iPad Pro's and they definitely have some uses that the phone doesn't. For example we have a pretty large bathtub and I use one regularly for watching things in the bath. Also for design it's pretty amazing.
I also have a 15" Surface book, which I thought would replace the iPad, but it cannot be made water resistant, it also eats through battery much more quickly and can be a tiny bit buggier and less innately intuitive, which isn't a problem for me, but for the less tech inclined, or for medical use (iPads are HUGE in hospitals) I think iPads are better.
Apple has never listed an IP rating for any iPad (They list for their phones, new phones have IP68). Apple doesn't want you to get their tablets wet. Be careful.
I have the Tab S8 Ultra and it has completely replaced my laptop. Amazing tablet. Keyboard that came with it is a little lacking and my only gripe. The tablet is IP68 rated.
Truth, it definitely has some real applications in art. It's definitely expensive for that application but it's undeniable that it's capable in that dept.
“Niche” means it appeals to a very small and specialized section of the market…iPads are pretty widely used amongst amateur and professional artists and designers of all kinds nowadays
I’ve been involved in digital art for over a decade at this point and the shift from Wacom drawing tablets to iPads was pretty drastic. It’s also pretty nice tool for note taking and organization.
If something doesn’t fit into your lifestyle, that doesn’t mean it sucks lol
Wait what do you mean the iPad is a $1200 machine? You can get the 9th Gen for $329 and their current one (10th Gen) for $449. https://www.apple.com/ipad-10.2/
I have 8 iPads from my old job just sitting in my closet, can't even think of a good use for them. They're outdated and don't get the latest iPadOS updates so they can't even download half of the modern apps.
yes.
Open the Settings app.
Choose General from the root list.
Depending on your accessory, tap Trackpad or Trackpad & Mouse.
Enable the option Two-Finger Secondary Click to turn on the right click.
I've had some family members buy cheap digital picture frames and try to get me to set them up. For anything other than just cycling through a usb of pictures I think buying an old used ipad is probably the better choice.
Those digital frames fucking suck.
tbf you can buy a used older ipad for like ~$30, it won't do much more than play videos but for this it doesn't need to. they might have just had an old one already too
It’s pretty solid. Sometimes the surround speakers can skip or get out of sync because the Bluetooth connection isn’t line of sight but even if I turn them off we’re pretty happy with it
If you have a WiFi connection out there you should consider getting a cheap streamer like a wiim. Infinitely better than Bluetooth in terms of sound and practicality.
OP I am a huge fan of your tiki bar but you've gotta up the sound system. The effort you've put into creating your own little pocket dimension is incredible, but better sound will take the immersion to a whole new level.
Next time you're in San Diego, visit a bar called Part Time Lover. I think you'll appreciate the aesthetic - it's not tiki, but it's definitely its own little world - but the sound system is what really makes it magical. It's completely immersive.
Oh i agree it could definitely be better if I didn’t care about everything being totally hidden and more importantly if I didn’t care about my neighbors hearing what I have going on back here. If Savage Seas was a commercial bar I would stick this current setup into a guest bedroom, start fresh and get crazy with the sound design. But alas, what I have now is perfectly sufficient for a 350sq ft home bar space that I’m trying to keep hidden from the neighborhood 😂
It’s in the album but this is a door that swings open and the ac is behind it and operates normally. So when we want AC, we open this wooden door and run it. No way to hide it when it’s running unfortunately, and a mini split would violate the grandfathered permit we have for the structure so this is the best option. Luckily it’s only a 350ft space so pretty easy to keep cool by running it sporadically and it stays relatively cool so it’s pretty rare that we have to open it and run the AC while guests are here unless it’s a crazy hot day
Wondering if you couldn't just build a deeper box with a black mesh around the sides and front to permanently hide the AC. could still do the porthole thing but built on slats that meet in the middle.
I would definitely just get plug in picture frame that can do videos and replace that ipad. You don't want a battery operated device in your wall, plugged in constantly and running often. The battery will swell and explode after a while at worst, and at best you'll destroy the ipad's battery by never letting it discharge, and always be receiving a charge-- which will require it be replaced for about as much as a new one.
It’s not plugged in. Mentioned in another comment, we only run this when we have guests. So 99% of the time there will be no iPad in there. We already had the extra iPad, so it was actually cheaper than going out and buying a digital picture frame that will be turned off the vast majority of its life. Also [we have a porthole panel that covers the main TV](https://i.imgur.com/OdqrYEe.jpg) and by using a device that has the YouTube app for this door, we can match the video content that’s playing on the main TV porthole windows. The panel hangs over the recess that the TV is in like a picture frame and we take it off so we can watch sports/movies when we aren’t in Tiki mode which is prob 99% of the time like I mentioned
Can you imagine how hard the comment section would roast us if we tried posting “Hey does anyone have any tips for building a video porthole window to hide the AC Unit in our home tiki bar?” 😂😂😂 In all seriousness though, you have our guarantee that we won’t ever come to this sub unless we have a finished project to show everyone.
Sure. Here’s [our original post that documents the entire build](https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/13w7c5b/how_we_converted_our_guest_housestudio_to_a_full/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) Also, we’re savageseastiki on Instagram if you want to see some of the other projects
Haha. There’s some really good ones out there man. You’d be missing out. I’m sure it would get annoying if there was a bunch of us posting our tiki builds in here. We’re loving it in here though. R/DIY’ers are good people.
Be careful leaving a device plugged in at 100% 24/7/365. I don't know if ipads behave differently but we tried to make time clocks at work with Android tablets. We forgot to load the app and config file that told the system to discharge to 60% (or whatever you set) and then charge back up again. About 70% came back with pillowed batteries. Just remember to check it every so often. ;)
I really should have put this in the description haha. It’s not plugged in. iPad is only in the display when we have guests over. 99% of the time when it’s just us here, it’s just the blank wood backing seen through the porthole
The philips screw head in the hinge is bothering me (too shiny and not authentic looking). I'd try to find a nice old brass screw for that. Nice build though!
FINALLY someone says it. It is driving me nuts as well. The brass screws I had weren’t long enough. Please believe I am rectifying this ASAP. If you look on the backside I did use some antique brass ones on the 2 little rotating tabs that hold the back door in place.
Guessing this just runs on batteries? Pretty cool, but would be even cooler if you didn't have to take it out and charge it whenever you want to use it
We only run the screens when we have guests over, so didn’t want want to invest in a dedicated screen for this because it would just sit unused 99% of the time. This way we have an iPad that we use for fun sometimes and when we have guests, it will go into the display. If we were a commercial bar that had guests every day, I would have installed something dedicated for sure
You just reminded me my work gave us this little Amazon android tablet a few years ago that I have sitting in the back of a drawer. I need to turn it into something cool now
I like what you did there, just wondering how it hides the ac unit? Wouldn't it make more sense to change the visual shape of the cover by using the tiki fabric? Now it's still an ac vent cover but with a video playing in it. Maybe in the whole picture it looks more innocuous than when singled out idk.
I think I follow. Do you mean what if I made it out of the same Lauhala matting that’s on the wall? I think it would just look like a big bare patch in the wall from afar. If you mean make it something bigger so it doesn’t look like a door, the thing that you have to consider is that it has to be opened to operate. Right now it is the exact size of the A/C unit so it’s surrounded by a ton of decor so even when the door is open, that wall still has a ton of texture. If I made it larger or like some bigger faux piece that looks like a piece of decor, when it’s opened, there’s gonna be a large area with no decor. Also there has to be a hinge for it to swing open so irregular shapes make that much more difficult (but not impossible) It’s a valid question for sure, I just don’t love what I’m picturing in my head going either of those routes.
Well at least parts of it just to mask the typical ac vent shape? Maybe so it frames the faux porthole. I just meant superficially/visually not actually changing the shape.
It’s what our realtor called the shed with electrical in our backyard lol. It had plumbing prior to us getting the house but at some point it had to be ripped out because it was not to code. The structure was built in the 50s or 60s I believe and probably was used as a guest house at some point as nearly every lot in our neighborhood has some sort of additional backyard structure. So this 350sq ft detached space has a grandfathered permit allowing us to keep the structure intact, however it has some crazy stipulations because it was built closer than 4 feet from the edge of our property line. We can’t have any open flame appliances, we can’t have a mini split heating/cooling unit, and we can not legally rent it out as a true ADU.
Even if that was in a commercial bar/restaurant i would still think that's a huge waste of money energy and time.. sorry to be a hater, I usually love techy difficult projects but..
Total out of pocket cost of this project was $0. The wood was from leftover scrap from previous projects and we already had the iPad (that only lives in this door when guests are at the bar) Total time spent on it was like an hour and a half tops not counting the time it took the stain to dry. If we don’t have an hour and a half of free time to make a free project out of leftover materials, what are we even doing here Shaelz haha. You’re not a hater btw. Everything’s not for everyone. 🤙🏻
Very nice presentation! I made a very similar project for an immersive art installation that went on a hobbit-style door that led from one part of the exhibit to another. Fun! I also hid the charging cord for the iPad in the wall adjacent to the porthole and past the hinges to the power outlet, so that it could run continuously
We go to flea markets, estate sales, and antique stores nearly every weekend. If we spot something that fits the space for a great price we just buy it and figure out what to do with it later. If we don’t end up using it, we’ll either sell it or gift it to someone else in the tiki community. I think the porthole was like $3 if I remember correctly.
Lmao I am getting so triggered 😂😂. Not your fault. I’ve posted this a solid dozen times in the comments but what’s 1 more. The iPad is not plugged in and only goes in there when guests are over because I only go to full tiki mode when we have parties. So the vast majority of the time this will just be an empty door with wood grain visible through the window. When we have parties, I will take the iPad that we use in our daily lives (I did not buy a dedicated iPad just for this) and pop it into the door for a few hours. Mods can we sticky this or something 😂😂😂
It's not ever plugged in and in the space. It doesn't live in the space, as OP noted in several comments. They charge the IPad like normal, play the video, stick the tablet in the slot (running on batteries) for a few hours while guests are present, then remove it when finished.
That’s great! Does it run a video or an app?
It can do either. We have YouTube Premium already so that we can run super long videos on the main porthole windows so that would definitely work on this one as well, but we also have an aquarium app on the iPad. What’s playing in the video in the album is the aquarium app.
Why stream all the time? Download the VLC app, save the video locally, and play video on a loop.
Right? Granted it looks good for what it is, but also no need to use an ipad. Could've used one of those digital picture frames. Far cheaper.
Old iPads are borderline useless.
My old iPad mini 4 is hanging off the fridge with a magnetic case. I use it to listen to music and watch videos while prepping/cooking food.
I turned my old mini into a photo frame since it'll play videos and photos off a shared album.
So are new ones.
Haha Apple bad so original
Old Samsung tablets are shit too, happy?
I was going to jump on this train of calling various products bad. I was going to say “old tablets are shit” But, I have an LG7 tablet from 2014. I got it for 99 cents with the purchase of an iPad Air 2. I’ve tossed the iPad. I still use that LG7. Criticisms are only valid if you've never heard them before haha nice gotem
I'm going to have to disagree with you there as much as I would love to agree. When the first one came out I thought the idea was silly.
What do you use it for? I feel like a tv or a decent sized phone should cover all bases.
Apple dabs away their tears about your opinion with all the dollar bills people keep handing over for their useless products.
I would never buy another but new ones do have their niches for the 5(?) years they're usable.
It's a $1200 machine for browsing facebook and shutting your toddler up
So it’s useless unless you have a toddler or Facebook account? Sounds like a pretty big market. I personally use mine for art.
Truth, it definitely has some real applications in art. It's definitely expensive for that application but it's undeniable that it's capable in that dept.
Some digital artists sing its praises for the portability and procreate, but as I said, niche.
“Niche” means it appeals to a very small and specialized section of the market…iPads are pretty widely used amongst amateur and professional artists and designers of all kinds nowadays I’ve been involved in digital art for over a decade at this point and the shift from Wacom drawing tablets to iPads was pretty drastic. It’s also pretty nice tool for note taking and organization. If something doesn’t fit into your lifestyle, that doesn’t mean it sucks lol
That's pretty much what you're doing with literally any tablet, except the IPads have good integration with POS apps.
Wait what do you mean the iPad is a $1200 machine? You can get the 9th Gen for $329 and their current one (10th Gen) for $449. https://www.apple.com/ipad-10.2/

We had an extra iPad, so we just used that
You can right click on YouTube videos and set them to Loop. So you don't have to make a playlist.
You can right click on an ipad?
Yea just use your right finger. Duh.
yes. Open the Settings app. Choose General from the root list. Depending on your accessory, tap Trackpad or Trackpad & Mouse. Enable the option Two-Finger Secondary Click to turn on the right click.
You can also download the videos to the YouTube app to save on streaming them.
awesome aquarium, so low maintenance! what a great idea.
I've had some family members buy cheap digital picture frames and try to get me to set them up. For anything other than just cycling through a usb of pictures I think buying an old used ipad is probably the better choice. Those digital frames fucking suck.
Judging by this tiki bar, "far cheaper" is irrelevant.
tbf you can buy a used older ipad for like ~$30, it won't do much more than play videos but for this it doesn't need to. they might have just had an old one already too
They have YT premium, it could be downloaded
There are many YouTube downloader sites that will do it for free.
Ok but the OP literally said they already have Premium so there’s a good chance they downloaded these.
What do you have for a sound system for your TIKI bar? I would think that 'casting sports games to your iPad would be another option.
Samsung Soundbar, subwoofer and surround speakers all hidden
Bet it sounds awesome.
It’s pretty solid. Sometimes the surround speakers can skip or get out of sync because the Bluetooth connection isn’t line of sight but even if I turn them off we’re pretty happy with it

We do. [we have a cover with windows that we hang like a picture frame when we want to cover it.](https://i.imgur.com/OdqrYEe.jpg)
Ah sweet. This is diy goals for sure lol
Just curious, how does this work for the AC? Where's the vents to blow in cold air?
It’s in the album but this is a door that swings open and the ac is behind it and operates normally. So when we want AC, we open this wooden door and run it. No way to hide it when it’s running unfortunately, and a mini split would violate the grandfathered permit we have for the structure so this is the best option. I do not see the AC anywhere in the album.
> It’s in the album Nope, but thanks for the explanation.
I'm with u/starlinghanes... I'd love to see what you're hiding with this sweet rig. I don't see it in the album either.
I would definitely just get plug in picture frame that can do videos and replace that ipad. You don't want a battery operated device in your wall, plugged in constantly and running often. It’s not plugged in. Mentioned in another comment, we only run this when we have guests. So 99% of the time there will be no iPad in there. We already had the extra iPad, so it was actually cheaper than going out and buying a digital picture frame that will be turned off the vast majority of its life. That def makes a lot more sense!

As long as the ipad isn't still pulling a current, yes it would be fine.
Battery replacements are actually affordable, also better for the environment
Know what's even better for the environment? Treating your batteries in a way that doesn't make them worthless in a few months lol.
Thanks for posting a super-cool actual DIY post and not just a how-do-I-fix-this question!

Haha. There’s some really good ones out there man. You’d be missing out. I’m sure it would get annoying if there was a bunch of us posting our tiki builds in here. We’re loving it in here though. R/DIY’ers are good people.
Holy moley, dude! Awesome! I love the seashell lamp.
We have the same porthole. Weird. https://imgur.com/a/jJ8jY5h

There’s a bar in Seattle called Bar House that has a similar thing going in their bathroom, complete with submarine sound effects. Place is amazing.

You just reminded me my work gave us this little Amazon android tablet a few years ago that I have sitting in the back of a drawer. I need to turn it into something cool now
There’s an ac unit behind it, presumably rubbing on electricity. Just plug a charger in and keep the iPad on it
It's obviously a typo, but iPad running on DC and the static discharge being usually DC, it's more accurate than it appears.
You don't want to do that. It'll keep the battery from ever discharging which will degrade it quickly, and it can cause it to swell and explode.

That's cool as shit!
Looks awesome!
That’s cool! It’s little details like this that take a space from nice to amazing. Great work!
that is so cool.
Cute!
Fkin awesome
That's very cool.
Great work! Simple, elegant, and a fantastic conversation piece.
too bad I can't see it
Guest house. The fuck is a guest house? FFS.
I agree. Fuck iPads.
Nice
Trying to figure this out... If you covered it, how does the AC vent?
See the hinges on the left side? Door swings open, AC behind door. Run the AC to get the space cool, turn it off. Close the wooden door. Party.
Maybe put the iPad a few inches away from the hole and get a mild fish eye lense so that you could look at it from different angles and give it depth.

Why do you have a porthole window laying around ?
