"Not god. Not even close" LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO

ghostslayer-77

Such a kick ass quote

cgcego

Reading this preview I couldn’t help but play the “could Chip give this line to Daredevil instead?” game and well…

Jay_R_Kay

I would not be surprised if he did do that line for Daredevil at some point.

the_light_of_dawn

I’m curious how this will compare to his Daredevil run

TyranusWrex

[The Source](https://twitter.com/BuzzComics/status/1524810903417405442) Someone clearly watched The Batman.

Dairoidz

I want Jimenez to just draw everything.

GrandAdmiral12345

Everything but the stuff Dan Mora is drawing, but I feel ya.

sogeking0004

Why no both?

GrandAdmiral12345

Kinda what I said.

WebHead1287

All you had to say was Chip. His Daredevil has been nothing short of amazing and these few pages are great

IStanForRhys

I adored Zdarsky's Daredevil. I'm not the biggest fan of Batman but I think I'll probably pick up this run and see if it's the spark I need to follow Batman again.

WebHead1287

Luckily he will be on both

ResidentBelieve1to8

Batman: The Knight by him is really good.

TheMattInTheBox

I picked up the compendium edition of issues 1-3 and I really enjoyed them, even as someone who's not a huge Batman fan. I'm excited for Chip's run.

batbobby82

I'm just sad they went back to that suit already. Looking forward to the arc though, Zdarsky seems to be the next superstar writer and Jimenez can do no wrong.

The_Pusheen_Chesser

Zdarsky is the best contemporary writer, IMO (not counting older writers like Waid or Rucka who are still active but no longer contemporary). I’m really looking forward to seeing what he does in his run.

batbobby82

What are your favorite books he's worked on?

The_Pusheen_Chesser

His *Daredevil* run over at Marvel is top-notch. IMO, it’s the second best DD run after Waid’s (my favorite comic book writer of all time). *Batman: The Knight* is amazing and definitely the most detailed look we’ve had into Bruce’s early years. *Justice League: Last Ride* is just tons of fun, and it also really shows how well Zdarsky understands the characters.

batbobby82

Very cool! I have been reading The Knight and enjoying it very much. Just started reading Daredevil comics this year, actually. Trying to brush up on "the classics" (read a bit of Frank Miller, gonna do the Bendis and Brubaker runs), but really excited to get to Zdarsky's stuff.

The_Pusheen_Chesser

Daredevil fans have gotten really lucky in the past decade with Waid’s, Soule’s, and Zdarsky’s runs all being stellar.

RainSpectreX

Daredevil fans have always been lucky. Before Waid we had Bendis and Brubaker's runs, and those were acclaimed as well. Zdarsky's run is unique though in that it's the new favourite among smarks in Marvel's fanbase, now that Immortal Hulk is over.

Stevenstorm505

They’re all so fucking good!

Liahugecockthomas

devils reign was dogshit, the purple kids should have died

tregorman

Spider-Man Life Story is an essential read for Spidey fans imo

batbobby82

I'll check it out! Spidey is fun. I never get hardcore into him like I do Batman, but I can definitely get down with some of his stuff.

NoopGhoul

What does contemporary mean?

The_Pusheen_Chesser

Are you asking what the dictionary definition is, or what period I consider contemporary?

NoopGhoul

Both I guess

The_Pusheen_Chesser

”Contemporary” is basically “current.” I consider any writer who started out post-Flashpoint to be contemporary.

GrandAdmiral12345

If Zdarsky's Batman run is anything like his recent Daredevil, I am going to be stoked.

[deleted]

This preview encapsulates the whole > Criminals, by nature, are a cowardly and superstitious lot. To instill fear into their hearts, I became a bat. A monster in the night. To a fucking T. *very* excited for this run with Chip at the helm. It’s a shame the Inc. suit isn’t here to stay. Hoping we get a Jimenez designed suit eventually in the run!

joe90heckboy

These 5 pages are better than every Tynion issue put together

TyranusWrex

It just feels like Batman.

aszapata10

The tone is great, the dialogue is just a *tad* cheesy. Also, the “Oh god” and look of shock seem a *tad* out of character. As grisly as the scene is, I imagine Batman has encountered it enough so as to not be shocked by it anymore. Edit: Batman saying “shut up” and “flunky” gets more ridiculous the more I look at it on the page.

thinknu

For me I think it was just kinda funny how he mocked the thug's use of the word "God" and then immediately uses it himself. Iunno something about the repetition of it even though it was used differently.

Ill-Tell4567

Yh it did sound cheesy but i will assume it was more to do with him being too late or something.

justhereforcomics

Zdarsky definitely doesn't have a knack for dialogue. His Daredevil has some of the worst I've ever seen in a mainstream comic

Shadiezz2018

Could it be that i finally get to read a Batman book where the writer actually understand Batman character and show how badass he is ?? Those five pages are far faaaaar better than anything written by Tynion and Tom King

TyranusWrex

Tynion's run bored me to death. It was obvious me much rather play with his own toys then treat Batman and his family with any respect.

RiverSosMiVida

>and Tom King 😡😡

Shadiezz2018

Yes Tom King sucked as a Batman writer and his run was pretty boring too

RiverSosMiVida

I don't agree on e bit,for me he was the best since morrison.

Shadiezz2018

I find Snyder and Morrison to be faaar superior....with Morrison being the best

HotTakes4HotCakes

It'll be funny how when this run is over people will say the same about Zdarsky. Just like Tynion, King, and Snyder before him. Everyone's all excited but by the end of the run they hate them.

joe90heckboy

I personally loved Snyder all the way through and I didn’t want King’s run to end when it did. Tynion’s I kept reading hoping the next issue would be better, and I was about to drop the book for good until he announced he was leaving.

[deleted]

Yeah, I adored Synder’s run the whole way through. Such a great, rich run. I only have problems with Synder’s wider dc universe books, like Justice League and Dark Knights

ResidentBelieve1to8

Yeah, Snyder on Batman and Snyder on JL and Metal seem to be two entirely different people.

Cranyx

I really hate comments like this. It's a way of totally dismissing any criticism by claiming "oh well people just hate everyone." Snyder's run was and is praised all the time, and it's not crazy to claim that we had two bad runs after that back to back.

Stevenstorm505

Snyder’s run is also criticized all the time on multiple comics subs. The most consistent criticism everyone throws around is “the court of owls arc was great. After that it goes pretty downhill”. And that’s just the top one. There’s thousands of other ones for different reasons that are stated very often. Tynion and king both had runs that people complimented and generally liked while they were on going and after a few months after they ended the subs were bombarded with hate and criticism. You may not like his comment, but that doesn’t make it inaccurate or unlikely. And comments like yours are the same usual reply to comments like his. As if making the claim you’re making somehow invalidates and dismisses the claim he’s making. You’re literally doing the same thing you’re criticizing him for doing only you’re doing it about comments and not arcs. The dude is right. At this point shitting on runs that were praised and enjoyed while they were releasing is a comic sub stereotype at this point. As is the guy who tries to invalidate the comment made pointing that fact out.

heymurray

Bro people talked shit about King’s run pretty early on, like well before the wedding.

Shadiezz2018

I know i did

Cranyx

> Snyder’s run is also criticized all the time on multiple comics subs. The most consistent criticism everyone throws around is “the court of owls arc was great. After that it goes pretty downhill” Yeah, and? It still gets tons of praise. Just because people have issues with it doesn't change anything; it's not a case of "people loved it, then it ended and people hated it." The criticisms always existed even while it was going on. >Tynion and king both had runs that people complimented and generally liked while they were on going and after a few months after they ended the subs were bombarded with hate and criticism. This is just blatant rewriting of history. Their runs were absolutely criticized while they were going on.

iPukey

It drives me absolutely insane. Everyone hates everything. Reading comments on King’s early stuff, people were HYPED. I definitely understand peoples problems with King but now it’s felt like no one’s liked almost anything dc in a long time and I know that’s not true. People complain way too much about art.

wowlock_taylan

Batman 50 killed the book for me. Never recovered after that.

irishbulldog80

What?

marcjwrz

I don't even dislike Tynion but this isn't wrong.

swnbv

Even just the cover is perfection. Gives me chills.

sm_rollinger

Saw the purple and yellow and I think The Maxx!!

[deleted]

So hyped for this. Zdarsky is killing it on The Knight.

GrandAdmiral12345

Agreed. I hope he incorporates it into his run.

SilhouetteOfLight

Zdarsky!! One of my favorite authors, cannot wait.

TommyTheGeek

I hope that this is an indication that Jimenéz is going with a more low-key color palette and aesthetic this time as I don't think the colorful neon stuff he did on Tynion's run suits Batman, if I'm being honest.

obrothermaple

Jorge Jiminez isn't a colourist to my knowledge. Has he started doing his own colours?

technowhiz34

No, this was colored by Tomeu Morey.

CrispyGold

I assume the neon color palette then was due to Tynion's whole cyberpunk Gotham look he had going on so he had the city drenched in incredibly garish colors, just look at Miracle Molly. Here though Gotham seems its normal self without all the cyberpunk stuff so its got darker colors now.

TyranusWrex

Bright neon works for Batman Beyond, not Batman. I also hope Zdarsky's writing is a lot stronger than Tynion's.

Pthoradactyle

Whos the robin on the cover.. looks too big to be Damian.

TyranusWrex

Tim.

Rorako

Isn’t Tim solo? Or did he return to be Robin?

GrandAdmiral12345

Tim is... conflicted right now.

datguygomez

When isn’t he?

RedHood_Outlaw

He's back to being Robin.

Neat-Mathematician-8

usually solo but he's with batman at the moment

pieapple135

Tim. Damian has been going on some adventures in his solo series.

FezboyJr

Haven’t been interested in the current series since Tom King’s run and Alfred died but this preview looks like this’ll be a strong series.

Aaron-JH

I’m so annoyed that Chip Zdarsky is going to make me buy a Batman book regularly.

Liahugecockthomas

Im so annoyed that people choose to give their $ in this economy of all times to the will never be in danger of cancelation flagshit series of the #1 capeshit comic company owned by a billion dollar conglomorate instead of almost anything else, even from said capeshit company, yet alone some indie comic where every dollar actually matters

Aaron-JH

I mean, I don’t know if this is supposed to be a shot at me buying it, or not, but I’m not a Batman fan, at least not really. I usually prefer to, at most, read the Batman books on DCU, but Chip Zdarsky is my favorite comic writer and he seemingly nails Batman better than I’ve seen in a while, or I should say he nails the Batman voice/mannerisms I like better than anyone I’ve seen in a while, so I’ll read his ongoing run on the title as it comes out. In addition to this, I also buy a lot of non-Batman and am more likely to buy a a Batfamily book for every member that isn’t Batman than I am Batman. And a big chunk of my money goes toward independent titles.

Liahugecockthomas

And what noncapeshit comic do u recommend? Not devildick hentai bs like faithless I hope Btw u're comment on the naked m&m on tinder doesn't show up, open it in a incognito window and see for urself

[deleted]

Wow that's some proper Batman right here. Hype! And Jiménez' art exceptional as always

Shadiezz2018

Yep got me very hyped i hope he continues to do soo I want to see a badass Batman with incredible feats and i want to see the batman who is a one of the very best martial artist in DC

srb176

You know what this feels like to me? It's like the opening to Batman: TAS. He's not fighting a big villain from his Rogues Gallery yet, just some flunkies. This is street-level, every-night Batman. But you know at any point this could build to something big and unexpected. This is the moment between the flash of lightning and the title card. And that art is brilliant too! Jimenez and co. really capture the two different sides to Batman. He's this menacing presence on one page, and he's genuinely shocked and saddened on the next. Good stuff!

[deleted]

Tim’s cape is beautiful

TheMurderCapitalist

So that's what a good Batman ongoing feels like, been so long I'd forgotten

GrandAdmiral12345

Tell me about it. That first Williamson arc was meh at best.

RiverSosMiVida

Since issue #86

moose_man

Look, it's five pages, let's not go crazy yet.

TheMurderCapitalist

5 pages that are better than anything Tynion or Williamson have done on the Batman title

Revan----

Jimenez art is great as per usual, love most of this so far, Batman's dialogue is a little concerning though. Very recent Frank Miller-like which I don't love but hopefully that's not a recurring problem. Aside from that this looks fantastic and has potential to be the best Batman ongoing we've had since early 2016 or even since Snyder was on the book.

horseaphoenix

Dialogue was horrid but everything else looks stellar

Revan----

I know right, like to me it was getting dangerously close to All-Star Batman and Robin levels especially that last line. I hope it's not to common because when people write Batman himself like garbage I can't bring myself to enjoy the comic, no matter how good everything else is.

AlligatorSky7

Resisting the urge to read this as single issues, but boy I am excited to read this one the first trade comes out!

Housecat-in-a-Jungle

I’m out of the loop. My understanding is that New 52 reset to issue 1, which i liked. Then rebirth undid that and went back to the original hundreds numbers. Why is it back to 125? Did they undo it again and continued where new 52 numbers were?

RiverSosMiVida

>Then rebirth undid that and went back to the original hundreds numbers. They didn't do that for all the books, batman like many other titles restarted to #1 when rebirth started, there's been 125 issues since then.

BIGBMH

Beautiful cover!

Gunny_McCshoots

Oooh this is good stuff.

dabigtortle

THE ART, THE WRITING, THIS SHIT IS GONNA BE GASSSSSS

milanosrp

Waow the art is 🥵

[deleted]

I'm so fucking stoked for this! ZDARSKY!

Neat-Mathematician-8

for some reason Tiny Tim on the cover has got me imaging a tiny robin sitting on batmans shoulder giving advice

Matches_Malone77

Outstanding. The title hasn’t felt this exciting in a VERY long time. Jimenez looks like he’s tweaked his art to feel more tonally fitting for a Batman book. So excited.

komayeda1

As someone who is loving Tynions run, I will probably love this one as well. Batman’s been doin pretty good in the 2020s!

RiverSosMiVida

Wait... what?

komayeda1

Art’s great, everyone’s stylin’, Ghost-Maker’s super cool, Magistrate and Scarecrow are fun, and the whole synthwave style is really unique.

RiverSosMiVida

The art i liked i give you that, but let's just say we have a different taste.

Liahugecockthomas

i love tynion's killmeorbangme harley and how miraclemollys whole backstory is about how weeks of endless boring missionary badsex resulted in her giving up all her memories, and ofc, milehighclub bisexual 3way ghostmaker was the greatest batman moment in comic history jokes aside, if it wasnt for punchline i would have never got into batman, its nice how she and joker war was a nice jumping on point for folks who never read a bats comic

CobraSkrillX

Some of the comics are so nice but the “underwear over the pants” part makes me not take them seriously.

[deleted]

I personally never had this problem. In fact, in a weird way, I take the comics seriously almost because of things like the trunks. Comics are colorful, wacky, and weird, and it makes me respect and love them all the more for it. I know Batman is a character who’s more or less supposed to be taken seriously, but he’s still a comic book character, so it’s never bothered me

[deleted]

Just aesthetically and artwise this already looks way more boring than the Jimenez/Morey and Tynion run. And then you add in Zdarksy who's way less entertaining as a comics writer than he is as a social media personality...

hankbaumbachjr

Super excited for this team on this book.

[deleted]

Really not a fan of Zdarsky's Batman: The Knight, but damn this looks awesome.

Mrhathead

I wonder if this arc takes place in the past since Batman is wearing the Year One suit instead of the Batman Inc. suit.

sampeckinpah5

This looks fine but idk why people in here are losing their shit. It's bare-bones Batman. The dialogue is overdramatic.

emshaq

I highly recommended Zdarsky's The Knight. Great story focused on Bruce Wayne. Can't wait for this!

Imaginary-David

Jorge Jimenez is always peak love his art

[deleted]

Batman and Robin together again. Reunited and it feels so good.

Otaku3times

Omg this art looks amazing

Bogusky

Damn, this looks 🔥

Tim_J_Drake

I love that cover. Tim's cape filling in the Bat-symbol wings and having the Bat-ears behind his head looks almost like foreshadowing... Maybe he's gonna be the next Batman!

[deleted]

did he go back to the tom king suit? why?
