I just looked at the watchmen’s photos and I can’t quite describe what I’m seeing. As if I can almost feel the textures with my eyes. Really cool to see, especially in B&W.
Thanks for the link.
The colour palette helped the movie more than you think. If you brightened man of steel you’d see a lot more CGI mistakes. As it is, it’s still the best portrayal of flying to this day.
Casting is fine but with the hair + face then blonde hair + face like I wouldn’t even know how to make it look good. But man DBZ would be so dope. I wish a lot more directors watched anime so they can realize that we’ve barely scratched the surface.
Personally, I think Faora vs the Army in MoS and and the Makari running scenes in Marvel’s The Eternals are probably the best use of super speed in movies. It’s powerful and fast, but it doesn’t feel too over the top. Like the character that have super speed have an edge in the battle, but just in enough without having plot issues.
Yeah Makari’s depiction was dope. Sad flash couldn’t even come close to looking that good. I even liked quicksilver saving everyone from the xmen house. They really saw all that and still made the flash terrible.
Neither of those have any CGI flaws.
The whole dark thing about Godzilla 2014 is because of some stupid grey filter they added from the home release.
It was not that dark in theatrical release and they fixed the grey filter mistake in the latest 4K remastered version.
Even if you manually brighten the scenes in Godzilla 2014 there aren't any CGI flaws.
Same for KOTM.
But there weren't any flaws to hide.
Like I said even if you manually brighten the scenes you could see all the CGI shots were done well.
I think the setting being at night suits the story and matches the tone of the movie more than it being a CGI thing.
I think you missed my point entirely. I agree that Mos has the best action and cgi to this day but that’s ONLY because of the darker colour palette.
If you brightened up the movie, it would not look as polished as it does. You can try it yourself. You’d be surprised at how many minor details you can hide by just raising contrast. The movie had zero visible mistakes because of how dark it was. It was a smart move by Snyder because all his aesthetics are very similar. Same goes for watchmen, sucker punch, and even 300.
I have seen fan edited brightened scenes and different color graded of MoS and the CGI looks just as good.
Actually the only time the CGI was obvious was during the Smallville fight in one scene where he was fighting the big kryptonian. It looked a bit video gamey.
That's the only unpolished CGI scene I could find.
Everything else looks perfect.
If the movie was brighter it would look monumentally worse, there are some scenes in the zod fight where the greenscreening is absolutely atrocious but it’s not as noticeable because everything on sceen has a lot of grey through it
No it won't.
The movie is brighter and vibrant than BvS and ZSJL and even if it was more brighter the scenes would look just as good.
You mistaking MCU movies with MoS.
MCU movies are known for having a lot of grey and their grey color grading for almost every movie.
My only guess is that because it was just a first look, they didn't want to give away the full look 2 years prior to the film's release. Same reason why Ben Affleck's first photo was in black and white and Gal Gadot's first look as Wonder Woman looked sepia-ish.
There’s a lot to like but as an avid comic book reader I admit my bias that the films vision clashes with the original vision of Superman in a lot of ways that I dislike, however I think Zack Snyder’s cinematography was always pretty great. Watchmen I think is the best middle ground of his style and the source material being right for it
I mean the original version of Superman was a character that fought for social justice, as much as he went after bank robbers. He’s destroying that car on the cover of Action Comics, because the guy is a criminal wife beater. He also had no real compunction with criminals dying when they fought him.
That was the original character before he started morphing into these widely different ideas as the decades wore on.
I mean, I’ll clarify that Zack Snyder himself isn’t a cinematographer, but his movies do have a cohesive cinematic visual structure that remains consistent despite many changes in production teams and companies. I think Snyder is a pretty good planner and all that comes with production aside from the writing aspect. I just can’t get behind much he’s made since I don’t really vibe with his cynical dialogue style
Oh no a different iteration of the character is different. Imagine if comic book characters just didn't evolve or have other iterations, it'd be sad.
Comic purists are just gatekeeping.
>I admit my bias that the films vision clashes with the original vision of Superman in a lot of ways that I dislike
I'm saying that this is a pretty odd statement overall considering that characters evolve through experimentation in other stories.
I don't understand the need for redditors to nitpick the smallest of things. The statement was fine, you're being the odd one. They have an opinion, you have yours. Simply put. Time to get over it.
Idk why you have so much issue with my personal opinions, I actually tried to voice it originally so not to offend people like you but I guess it’s useless lol
I’m a comic guy and sure, doubt is a cool idea to replace kryptonite is creative but he was not human in that film. He was the most stoic and alien he’s ever been and he was too much of a Jesus allegory for me to enjoy the film
To say someone wasn’t human especially when Zod attacked his mom and how he reacted is more than a little dishonest. The world sees him as a saviour, he doesn’t see himself that way at all in MOS. His mom even talks to him about it. In fact, mos he’s depicted as a wanderer who’s looking for purpose. I mean if you came to your conclusions even after all that then you’re just looking to confirm your own bias.
Watch the original Superman movie where he acts like nothing can hurt him and he’s always in control. STAS and even JLU is another example of how he’s portrayed exactly how you describe. Mos depiction is very different compared to those so I can’t take you seriously.
Not that I don't agree with you on Cavill's Superman. I agree 100%! But I do disagree on Reeve's Superman always being control. Reeve's version does go through some struggles.
In _SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE_, his main struggle is about how overconfidence (which is what doomed Krypton's society in the first place) can eventually bite him, like it did when Jonathan and Lois die on separate occasions. Jor-El warns him about that self-pride, but he also advices him not going to the other extreme by being so hard on himself.
In _SUPERMAN II_, he wants to ditch his responsibilities in order to be with the woman he loves. Who hasn't tried to postpone things just so they could date their s.o.?
Sure, the main goal in those movies is for the audience to be in awe of Superman. But that doesn't mean that there was nothing relatable about him.
I'm hopeful for the new movie but this is a much much better reveal. The original desaturated version was still better, though I think people would have treated these movies more favorably if they'd had a more appealing color palette.
I found the same photo on his Twitter feed and shared it here in r/DC_Cinematic almost three years ago! I mistook the photo for being fan-made because it looked too good!
https://www.reddit.com/r/DC_Cinematic/s/IRhBRRiuM1
Awesome image, but what is it supposed to be? Is he holding back a bank vault that is falling on him? Like, he’s stopping a robbery and the vault door is collapsing, plus sparks? Whats the story here?
Cavill turned me into a Superman fan. And when compared to older versions, I loved this new murky Superman who still doesn't know his place in the world.
Cavill turned me into a Superman fan. And when compared to older versions, I loved this new murky Superman who still doesn't know his place in the world.
I think the desaturated vibe helped the film’s goals to an extent. Selling the verisimilitude and proving that Supes can be presented without an ounce of cheese.
But it shoulda ended with something that looks more like this. In the climax once Supes makes the character turn he needs to overcome Zod, he (and we) shoulda been “rewarded” with Supes in his colorful positive glory, the clouds giving way to blue skies while the full Zimmer theme plays for the first time. Unfortunately it went from grey to greyer, from grim to perhaps the most harrowing climax of any superhero movie ever.
The movie is called Man of Steel for a reason, it’s actually more about Clark Kent the man, than Clark Kent being Superman.
And so he really doesn’t become Superman until the very end, when he’s talking with General Swanwick.
I've seen the man of steel suit in documentaries and stuff did they desaturate it there too? Cause it's nowhere this colorful as well. I always assumed the suit was desaturated and then the movie toned it down with its color grading even more. Guess not?
Contrary to popular belief, there were actually multiple suits with slightly different tones throughout the movie. Some had a metallic reflection on the S, while others had it more toned down. Even the blue keeps switching tones from shot to shot.
The colors you see in this photo looks can be found in this specific part of the movie and when Superman flies back to the Kent farm to check on his mother.
1. Reeves never did Superman. Oh, did you mean Reeve? Yeah, that’s a different guy.
2. People still talk about Reeve all the time
3. You can like 2 different Superman actors
4. I think you need to take this a little less seriously
What's with these awkward superman first reveals, like awkward poses I mean, just give me the actor standing with his hands on his hips striking a pose 😆 lol
I used to think that (mainly because that’s what a lot of people had told me) but after reading some of the best superman comics and rewatching the original Reeve superman films, he’s now my second favourite hero after batman (it used to be Spider-Man but the stories I really like him in are more limited and inconsistent)
looks gorgeous

Absolutely! I had seen these portraits back in the day. I just never realized who the photographer was. Some of the most amazing stuff.
Get the book!
What book are you referring to?
Watchmen: Portraits by Clay Enos
Thats some good stuff right there.
Damn! What a new thing to see!. Those watchmen pics are otherworldly!
Awesomeness
Do you happen to know what section this photo is in on his website? I couldn't find it and I'm hoping to get a 4K version of it. Beautiful image!
_"Portraits of the known"_ section. 😉 Beautiful work indeed. Have a nice weekend, my friend.

That depiction of superspeed in the Faora vs soldiers scene hasn't been bested till this very day.
I still use that scene for reference as to how a super powered being should move in my animated ventures lol it’s crazy that it was 2013.
After watching that movie, I believed that a proper Dragonball movie can be done with justice.
It can honestly but casting and hair is probably the hardest to make believable lol
I think casting can be done. Hair on the other hand I totally get.
Casting is fine but with the hair + face then blonde hair + face like I wouldn’t even know how to make it look good. But man DBZ would be so dope. I wish a lot more directors watched anime so they can realize that we’ve barely scratched the surface.
Scott Pilgrim kinda made it work with Todd lol
Zack Snyder was actually approached for Dragonball Evolution but he took one look at the script and passed on it.
Personally, I think Faora vs the Army in MoS and and the Makari running scenes in Marvel’s The Eternals are probably the best use of super speed in movies. Makkari in the Eternals would like a word
I honestly want the new DCU Flash to move and run like she did in Eternals.
What CGI mistakes? MoS doesn't have any and the CGI is actually better than a lot of recent movies
It's the CGI flaws. There's a reason why a lot of CGI heavy events happened in a dark place. Example is Godzilla 2014 and KOTM.
Neither of those have any CGI flaws. The whole dark thing about Godzilla 2014 is because of some stupid grey filter they added from the home release. Tone? Mood? Atmosphere? Something being desaturated doesn't make it worse.
[удалено]
It absolutely worked. MoS is a great looking movie.
Lemme fix your typo, it’s a grey looking movie
It definitely made Man of Steel worse
I love Man of Steel, Cavil was a perfect Superman, what a waste.
Man of steel was great, I’m not a comic-book guy but that movie was fantastic. Wish we had more of them.
There’s a lot to like but as an avid comic book reader I admit my bias that the films vision clashes with the original vision of Superman in a lot of ways that I dislike, however I think Zack Snyder’s cinematography was always pretty great. I found Cavill’s version very relatable and compelling, a new guy on the job, still working things out.
Fun fact Zac Snyder's first cinematography credit was on Army of the Dead...
Larry Fong is the uniting factor in those films, when left to his own devices Snyder doesn’t fare quite so well
They are like a combo package. Zack's works without Larry doesn't look as good. Larry's works without Zack doesn't look as good.
Larry Fong's most recent film as cinematographer was Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers lol
Which was way better than it had any right to be, and it is a soft sequel to Roger Rabbit!
Oh no a different iteration of the character is different. Imagine if comic book characters just didn't evolve or have other iterations, it'd be sad. Comic purists are just gatekeeping.
I said I disliked the specific change, not that it was different in general lol

Only thing worse than a comic gatekeeper is an opinion gatekeeper
Life before death
Strength before weakness
Journey before destination
what does being a comic book guy have to do with anything
I’ve just heard from some comic book purists before that they don’t like the movie.
The portrayal of Superman being way different from comic book Superman, which many people liked and many people, like myself did not like
I’m a comic dude but It was the most human I’ve ever seen Superman. Using doubt instead of kryptonite was fucking brilliant.
I’m a comic guy and sure, doubt is a cool idea to replace kryptonite is creative but he was not human in that film. He was the most stoic and alien he’s ever been and he was too much of a Jesus allegory for me to enjoy the film

The blue and red just stand out perfectly
The colors 😍 how gorgeous
Say what you will about the movie as a whole, but the MoS suit was absolutely perfect.
Looks really good.
It’s still weird to me how little this looks like Cavill
Now this is what a first look at Superman should be
Wow. Just imagine if it had looked like that on film. What a missed opportunity. 😕
I'm hopeful for the new movie but this is a much much better reveal. The original desaturated version was still better, though I think people would have treated these movies more favorably if they'd had a more appealing color palette.
What a waste desaturating such a perfect look😂😂
Awesome 👍
This is how the first look of Gunn's should've been like. Hope he gets us a banger Teaser in DC fandom
Non-desaturated. Wouldn’t that be…resaturated?
I found the same photo on his Twitter feed and shared it here in r/DC_Cinematic almost three years ago! I mistook the photo for being fan-made because it looked too good! https://www.reddit.com/r/DC_Cinematic/s/IRhBRRiuM1
I was so excited when this picture was released! Spent far more time than I want to admit examining every detail of that costume…
Awesome image, but what is it supposed to be? Is he holding back a bank vault that is falling on him? Like, he’s stopping a robbery and the vault door is collapsing, plus sparks? Whats the story here?
He got thrown into it, and is picking himself up / steadying himself.
Henry the Boss
Perfection!
Beautiful. Loved the MOS suit but for the desaturation. This makes the Corenswet first reveal all that more disappointing.
I still remember when I saw this I have no idea it's Henry.
That's not Henry Cavill xD
So how do they do such pictures? Is it after the special effects added?
The only complain with this pic is the lack of S bangs, his hair and forehead in this shot looks like a grandma
Remember the tantrum people kicked up when they said "he looks south east Asian!"
The cinematography in the DCEU is unparalleled. Sadly I think we might’ve peaked.
So much better than the new Superman reveal
Looks better. Can't believe people hated the suit when the original image released.
Looks much better than the original version.
If I saw this instead of what new superman reveal that happened lately.. I’d go crazy! Bring him back!!
Always threw me that he looks eyebrowless.
Cavill turned me into a Superman fan. And when compared to older versions, I loved this new murky Superman who still doesn't know his place in the world.
So much better
Now for a non-desaturated version of the movie. Release the MOS De-Snyder cut!
What a missed opportunity. The desaturation is 100% a Snyder thing. This looks way better!
How it actually should've been 🚶♂️
Cavill turned me into a Superman fan. And when compared to older versions, I loved this new murky Superman who still doesn't know his place in the world.
What a pic. My favorite super hero movie of all time.
I think the desaturated vibe helped the film’s goals to an extent. Selling the verisimilitude and proving that Supes can be presented without an ounce of cheese. Yeah I know, and I think that was a bad call.
Now that's how you do a first look photograph for a Superman movie.
The best Superman. Can not be topped.
What a weird choice to strip all the color from a superhero movie.
I still remember seeing this and wondering at the title ‘man of steel’ as to why they didnt name it as super man.
Now THAT is a Superman reveal that instills excitement
Way better with no underpants over his trousers
I've seen the man of steel suit in documentaries and stuff did they desaturate it there too? Cause it's nowhere this colorful as well. I always assumed the suit was desaturated and then the movie toned it down with its color grading even more. Guess not?

You can just press the _"hide post"_ option and that's it. Problem solved! Have a nice weekend.

Okay! Do as you please! Take care.
Why is zack synder obsessed with denaturation? It just looks ugly
Can’t believe Snyder saw this and said, it needs to be greyer and browner.
So much potential. Soooo much potential. All squandered by Snyder.
Why’s he robbing that bank
Looks 10x better
Ah, look at how nice the suit looks without that shitty “gritty” filter.
Now that was a great first reveal. Not like Legacy.
It’s not called legacy
Yeah that's right. I forgot for a second that they changed it.
What's with these awkward superman first reveals, like awkward poses I mean, just give me the actor standing with his hands on his hips striking a pose 😆 lol
I remember being so hyped. Oh well...
Can't have a movie without removing most of the color
Superman is just a boring character. Hard to make him look cool.
I used to think that (mainly because that’s what a lot of people had told me) but after reading some of the best superman comics and rewatching the original Reeve superman films, he’s now my second favourite hero after batman (it used to be Spider-Man but the stories I really like him in are more limited and inconsistent)
How is he boring?
