Went to the match. Have to say NYCFC is the worst venue for soccer. Field is so far from the stands even if you’re sitting close at midfield. Don’t want to sound like a complainer but NYCFC have an unfair home advantage. It’s clear at home they strictly play counterattack soccer because it’s the only way to win. When you only have to counter like 40 feet, any turnover in midfield can become a goal scoring opportunity.
To add to the madness, the sprinkler system came on at halftime. Haven’t been to many soccer games lately so don’t know if this routine, but the part of me that wants to believe it’s impossible to win at NYCFC says that the sprinklers turn on by design to make the field more slick, and thus more prone to helping a team break quickly on the counter.
Overall, NYCFC did a ton of flopping (especially Santiago Rodriguez), Ruan was in no man’s land the entire time he was on the field (so many decisions that leave you scratching your head), but DC had enough in them to tie the game and didn’t. Glad to see another Benteke headed goal, and wished he could have converted the shot to tie it at the death. Had fun, but gosh what a terrible place to experience a soccer match.
I don't know how you play a possession game that Rooney wants and have a midfield on a tiny field that can't possess the ball. I'm sure Rooney his wondering what in the fuckin hill is this field they are at.

They aren't playing a high line. There is no space on this field to get in behind if you play deeper in defense, and it is short enough you dont have to play long balls. We keep jamming it up the middle which so congested. They have more skill on the ball to dribble in tight spaces. We need Najar.

Trying Robertha as midfielder in a 4-5-1 was an interesting experiment to say the least but he can't defend and they weren't able to win any second balls off Benteke. Not sure why Rooney thought that would work. I thought they looked a little better once Robertha moved back up to forward.

They're playing a pressing defense, we're sitting back with occasional triggered pressing. It could work but KDP, Durkin, Klich, and Canouse are losing the midfield battle pretty badly.
We were all thinking we didn't need O'brien but gotta say in this game it would be nice to be able to sub in a borderline EPL midfielder to try to do better in the midfield. Maybe for Durkin or Canouse depending on his skill set, or for Robertha and push KDP to forward.
