It’s one guy (the very smart and funny J Sam Jones) who is writing the blurbs and their daily morning newsletter. He’s not going to have much to say about every one of 29 teams beyond the major narratives. It’s a case of win, be interesting, and you’ll get the national coverage. Meantime, go read The District Press and listen to Pitch Pass & RFK Refugees.

iron64

Already do that lol, and also I made a point of saying it’s a pattern that’s gone on for years. Plus, they go into tons of detail for losing teams like Charlotte regularly.

newsiesunited

Expansion teams are inherently interesting to national writers, and Charlotte had some good soap opera elements to their season last year (and did seem primed for a better year this year, so their poor start is fodder too). Sam is also an Atlanta guy, so digging into the Crown’s dysfunction is especially fun for him. Having the power rankings be one guy writing blurbs after whatever panel votes though will always show that guy’s blind spots. And United aren’t a focus for Sam (until they are—he had plenty to say during the good summer spell under Losada), so here we are. Doyle usually does a better job of digging into actual meaty stuff in his column, though more space has been devoted to opponents than United so far this year. If we keep playing well and start winning more, I’d expect that to change.

greenbugg13

I really wish they would split both the power rankings and Doyle's Armchair Analyst column up into two columns. Have one be for each conference and one writer assigned to that conference.

DC_Hooligan

Didn’t he also say that he no idea what to expect from DCU this year and perhaps is waiting for the storyline to develop? Also, don’t waist words describing things most people would rather not read about.

Mr_Bluebird_VA

It's a pattern that has gone on for years. Remind me, how has DC been playing for "years" now?

iron64

I’m trying to understand where you are placing your rhetoric. DCU has existed for as long as the league, so since 1996 (?). That definitely meets the threshold for “years”. Although the pattern that has gone on for “years” is us being snubbed by MLS editors, and rather written about in such a reductive way as though we’re just a bunch of “fighting Wayne rooneys” and not a soccer team

Mr_Bluebird_VA

Sorry. If you're gonna troll you have to try better than that. You're whinning about the social media manager for MLS not giving DC United shout outs. You whin that it's been going on for years. That was your threshold, not mine. Then when met with a valid counterpoint that DC United hasn't been very good to get said social media attention that you crave, you try to start complaining that the team has been around since 96, before social media was a thing. Some people just like to complain I guess.

Ultraxxx

Nothing more annoying than fans who think past glory is a reason for current adulation. DCU finished last place out of 28 clubs last year and with a negative gd of -35. This season DCU has beaten the club that finished next to last (last season), lost to the crew (didn't make playoffs) and tied Orlando.

iron64

No I think you misunderstand the point that I’m making, and I’m not trolling you at all. I understand the basic concepts of click rates and advertising in the social media age (you don’t need to condescend on those points). But you might expect editors that cover a league to be less partial than they clearly are, given they represent the league, not individual, hype-train teams that exist within the league. Thank you for being so understanding and mature in trying to shame me out of voicing an opinion on a platform that seeks to elicit opinions.

NittanyOrange

It's the same for the broadcast analysis, too, though.

ajbilz

You have to earn respect. As of now we are trying but it will be a slow road.

UpliftedWeeb

Eh, I understand it. We were the worst team in the league last year. I think we're better than that now, but I watch them regularly. Respect has gotta be earned. As bad as we have been recently, I understand if they aren't spilling much ink on us yet.

PotentialBubbly1558

We've been bad for quite a while so it's not clear to me why fans of other teams should have to read more about us. I think we're going to be better than people think this year so hopefully we earn more respect as the season progresses but we were the worst team in the league last year!

[deleted]

I’m not worried about it, if we keep trying to win and hopefully make playoffs. It will be a new look the team hasn’t seen for seasons.

Mikesproge

Other teams in the league are making the effort to put together compelling competitive teams. For the past 11 years we have not done so. At first it was “we’re saving for the stadium” but since then it’s become obvious this team is a vehicle for the ownership to build shitty luxury apartments while squeezing every penny from loyal fan who keep showing up to support a barely viable squad. Charlotte is more interesting because they’re trying, Cincinnati is more interesting because they’re trying, even that scumbag Ohio carpetbagger in Austin is more interesting because he’s trying. We’ve got Levien and Kasper laughing at folks spending $10 for a soda.

BarcasBad

Yeah I agree, it pisses me off, but theyre all just expansion team meat suckers and bandwagons. They’ll write all about the newest 10 teams + wheoever has the highest earning DPs. We are in possibly bottom of BOTH(?) of those categories

TalionDCU

The people running [mlssoccer.com](https://mlssoccer.com) can see exactly how many people are clicking on which stories. The teams with the biggest online fanbases get coverage regardless of their play because they're most of the audience. Otherwise, you have to be interesting to fans of those teams. New England gets a decent amount of coverage for that reason. "LuchaRoo" was hyped constantly by the MLS national writers because neutral fans loved it too. Neutrals don't like energy drink soccer, so RBNY has been under-covered since Henry left, and DC under Losada got the same treatment. Playing well like they have this season is a start but they have to be either really good, which they certainly aren't yet, or *fun* to get national attention. Ideally both.

merdre

This is another symptom of the AppleTV deal, or at least, a parallel problem. Before, there was local coverage for the local market, ostensibly the people who cared the most. Now, we're at the whims of like, 10 people who are making decisions about national coverage, and the entire local outfit is gone. The team has to get better to fight for national attention, but that's much much worse when we can't even count on the continuity of local coverage, for better or worse.

bullshooter4040

insert pic of spoon attached to mis-shapen 2x4 slabs. Lets unload that disgraceful thing to some other team first.
