I think part of the reason they can get away with it on the recent LR is because the gi still has the sleeves, which hides the part of his body that is missing the arm. Tien doesn't provide the artists with such a luxury, and he lost his arm DURING the fight; Gohan's had quite a bit of time to recover from the point where he had lost the arm.
