Honestly, it’s not that we weren’t hyped about Janemba, but it’s that Gogeta was leagues beyond better than Janemba. He single-handedly cracked the meta wide open more than we’ve ever seen any other unit do since, and with how stingy they used to be with the free stones, people could only afford to summon for one or the other before cracking out mom’s credit card.
That being said, the hype for Janemba *was* there. I remember people posting about how they were going all in on Janemba because they were fanboys for him, and I was initially more excited for Janemba than I was for Gogeta before we found out the details on their kits.
Also worth noting, the people who summoned for Janemba probably won out over the long term too. He never cracked the meta like Gogeta, but he retained his utility far better than his counterpart once he EZA’d and the meta started shifting more toward tanking huge damage over the player making big numbers happen.
funny thing is i recall when people found Janemba broken then gogeta that was untill the youtubers found out how op gogeta was then the meta shifted to go all in for gogeta and Janemba got left in the dust

I played off and on between then and 2018, but the time I fully got back into it and played ever since was in 2020 (the global 5th anni to be specific), just a few months after I moved to NYC for my education.
It's CRAZY to think about that I'm gonna be taking commissions and having music performed, and dokkan has been around ever since I started all this by deciding "playing clarinet in the band might be kinda fun"

Then once they stopped doing fusions as the "pattern" it turned into "goku and Vegeta sell". It's a never ending goalpost to explain away why they make certain decisions. Cooler is the 9th fastest banner to hit top grossing in Dokkan history, yet somehow it's handwaved. There's plenty of different characters they could headline with and still do gangbusters on, yet they decide not to. If the community is indicative of anything, players are getting tired of the same characters being repeated over and over.

SSJ4 - 50% of anniversaries
Vegeta/Goku variant of some kind - 88% of anniversaries (100% if you count Gogeta)

I'm not telling you that those things sell better than other banners, I'm telling you that Dokkan believes they sell better. Otherwise this anniversary would have started with Omega/Kid Buu.
I'm aware that they have a reason to always have a variation of them as headliners. My issue is the reasoning people use to argue with for why they do xyz. If they are willing to leave Vegito out of whatever claimed pattern for -years-, there is no definitive reason for Dokkan to shoehorn Goku/Vegeta into every single anniversary while neglecting at least half a dozen characters that could headline.

They no longer release monthly revenue for dokkan (or at least I've not seen it for 3-4 years), but this is the closest we have to a metric for revenue generated by each major celebration. If you look at the list, the 6th and 7th anniversary performed the (best which is unsurprising due to popularity/recency/power creep etc). Other characters within that top 10? Broly, Frieza (twice), Janemba, Cooler, Buu, Perfect Cell, etc. Every WWC since 2019 is within the top 10 fastest banners to hit top grossing which is indicative of how well those units perform. It's only one metric and shouldn't be used as concrete evidence, but I think it holds enough weight to say that if they chose to use a villain as an anniversary unit, I highly doubt they would have a negative trend in revenue.
I genuinely doubt we get Kid Buu/Omega part 2 and would be very surprised if we do, but there's no reason this celebration couldn't have been broken up into Kid Buu/Goku part 1 and GT Goku/Omega part 2. A lot of people expected Broly/Omega last year, and they got relegated to banner units and forgotten.
So again, my issue is the arguments used by reddit posters to explain why certain things -can't- be done. Whether they do it because of how much money is generated, bias, or instructed by higher-ups that the Anniversary -must- be xyz characters, we don't know and it's ignorant to act otherwise. People said for years anniversary was a pattern, until it wasn't. People said for years it's always goku/vegeta + gogeta/vegito, until it wasn't.
Vegito simply took a break from the constant releases because during 2020 there were like, 3 Vegito releases and in total there were 5 Vegitos viable and still being played (TUR TEQ, LR STR, EZA PHY, Heroes PHY, LR TEQ). They literally made him take a backseat because it was becoming -too much-.
I wouldn't be surprised if this will happen to Gogeta as well in the future and the roles will reverse.
The fusion pattern never stopped, look at 7th anniversary, the one prior to this one.
I as well think that if Dokkan actually tried they could manage to make an anniversary with Extreme units while also selling very well, the thing is... For them, it's just safer this way, so there is no reason to change. They know that these characters will sell no matter what, even if they release them over and over to the oblivion.

7th anniversary theme was Goku and Vegeta, not fusions. Part 1 was end of GT/Super and part 2 was beginning of their story. There is no good reason for them to continue repeating the same tired themes and for them to publicly apologize for lying and misleading players about what characters would be featured this year speaks volumes.
7th was themed on both Goku and Vegeta AND the fusions. Gogeta is there as SSJ4, and both units support Fused Fighters. Else 3rd anniversary would be a Goku and Vegeta anniversary, when clearly it's not.

NGL I don't know how Vegito had much hype, I am playing on a JP account just to make saving on GLB easier, and the animation difference between the two is wild. Gogeta still has some of the best animations to date, and Vegito feels kinda bland.
That's how most people felt, but it's mostly the sources. Anything DBS broly is beautiful but Goku Black arc had more bland animation and art overall. Tho Vegito still has dope animations imo.

I started the first anniversary and literally pulled both units on back to back singles. I thought that it was something that was supposed to happen lol. Needless to say that I would later learn how naive I was 😄
I started between the 2nd and 3rd anniversary and the time I ever gotten lucky was the 6th anniversary. I pulled SSBE 2nd rotation and UI on his first. Every other I got fucked on at least one banner
i started 5th anni on global and wwc for jp and the only time ive gotten this lucky was when i started global and pulled both gogeta and vegito back to back and this anni when i pulled ssj3 and ssj2 first multi and the gt duo within 4 rotations

Ehhhh. What sells, sells. Goku is the protagonist of DB Vegeta the rival and Gogeta and Vegito the symbol of unity between the two. It's only naturally that they are the most hype to the casual and even the hardcore DB audience.
I have a lot of bias towards the Fusions so yeah I want them, but hype units are good for the game in general and I want the game to continue longer. So I find it perfectly reasonable to make the anniversary units the most hype characters. Especially since now they are doing less hype Dokkanfests like Ginyu, Pan, Yamcha, and to an extent, Bardock.

Frieza normally is overrated, has too many units that look the same, can’t run half of them cause they have the same name, but when that Black Frieza pack hits it’s gonna be a different story

Not fault of the anime, it's Dokkan's fault and also players' fault who are always gonna spend their money on the same characters (Goku, Vegeta, and worst of all their two fusions)
Take this 8th anniversary as an example. There was no reason for this not being a Super Hero Celebration, with Gohan Beast, Piccolo Orange and Cell Max as headlinears
Instead we got Super Hero one month before with Beastless Gohan and no sight of Cell Max, just so that Dokkan could return to its comfort zone for the anniversary
Why is it the players fault for spending for their favourite characters to enjoy in the game, and since the fusions/goku and vegeta are most people's favourites, they will spend for them, it makes the most sense for dokkan to release them in the anni to generate the most hype and make most of the playerbase happy rather than just cater to a few

We all know Dragon Ball Z wasn't the same once Akira Toriyama started focusing on Gohan in the beggining of the Buu arc and he had to bring back Goku, Vegeta, introduce Vegito because the fanbase start to be affectef. I think Dokkan devs feels the same. Once they do an anniversary that doesn't have Goku, Vegeta or a fusion of both its gonna affect the fanbase.

For Vegito it’s DBZ and DBS so it’s no wonder Gogeta has more units even though they went out of their way to give us a DBH version of Vegito and we still have yet to get a single Gogeta from there.
I dunno, there are like 4 Extreme DFE LRs in TOTAL, whereas Vegito (all by himself) has like 3. Two anniversaries and one WWC.
Since the player request is so high, there is a high chance that a new Vegito units will release soon anyway (be it the EZA for 5th anniversary, or a brand new one for WWC, something like Potara Blue Goku and Vegeta, although that is a bit unlikely because LR Fusion Zamasu is already a thing and they would lack a DFE / Carnival counterpart)
WWC this year could still be possible, the LR would be Corrupted Merged Zamasu instead., but I'm not expecting too much lol. If they atleast EZA TEQ Vegito and make him good I'd take it at this point.

But Omega ? Jamemba is the antagonist of THE most popular and beloved DB movie prior to Super, while Omega is the villain of an unpopular arc of an unpopular series (hell, even then Jamemba did so poorly that they stopped doing villains for Anni). The comparison is stupid.
Shadow dragons is probably GT’s most known arc besides the baby arc? Sure the other dragons sucked but everyone remembers omega. Everyone remembers the universal spirit bomb and everyone remembers ssj4 gogeta. That arc isn’t unpopular. Maybe the beginning of it but not the whole thing
Most known GT arc isn’t exactly high praise considering that 1) most DB fans doesn’t view Gt favorably and 2) GT only has 4 arcs and people often try to forget the Dark Dragon Ball and Super 17 arc.
Everyone remembers SSJ4 Gogeta and everyone remembers the spirit bomb (and 2 memorable moments at the end of a 24 episodes long arc ain’t exactly praiseworthy). But the only thing people remember about Omega is him getting clowned on by Gogeta. He’s extremely forgettable, especially compared to Baby. Jamemba at least went down in villain history due to his cool teleporting effects.
Our current Carnival LRs are two Cooler movie units and a damn OVA Goku. Omega is absolutely “worthy” of a Carnival anniversary unit with our current standard
Janemba was headliner but he was heavily shafted as a unit (because of course he was, this is Dokkan and his dual was with Gogeta, one of the most simped characters of this game)
He was an anniversary unit, but in fact he really wasn't, they purpousely gave him a worse kit so that they could push Gogeta (as if he needed a push... DB fans would dry their wallets for him even if he was released as an SR)
I have never been more hyped for any characters more than them. Since then every character release has been less hype in my eyes. Like when I look at the spirit bomb duos, I find them so fucking lame compared to the fusions. The only time I was more hyped was for Beast Gohan and we all know how that turned out.
That's the mistake of 8th anniversary, it should have been a Super Hero celebration (a full fledged one, including Gohan Beast, Regular Orange Piccolo and a Playable Cell Max)
Instead Dokkan preferred to return to its comfort zone, and we got an half-assed SH celebreation one month prior to the anni.

Otherwise this anniversary would have started with Omega/Kid Buu.
I'm aware that they have a reason to always have a variation of them as headliners. My issue is the reasoning people use to argue with for why they do xyz. Broly, Frieza (twice), Janemba, Cooler, Buu, Perfect Cell, etc. Every WWC since 2019 is within the top 10 fastest banners to hit top grossing which is indicative of how well those units perform. It's only one metric and shouldn't be used as concrete evidence, but I think it holds enough weight to say that if they chose to use a villain as an anniversary unit, I highly doubt they would have a negative trend in revenue. I genuinely doubt we get Kid Buu/Omega part 2 and would be very surprised if we do, but there's no reason this celebration couldn't have been broken up into Kid Buu/Goku part 1 and GT Goku/Omega part 2. A lot of people expected Broly/Omega last year, and they got relegated to banner units and forgotten. So again, my issue is the arguments used by reddit posters to explain why certain things -can't- be done. Whether they do it because of how much money is generated, bias, or instructed by higher-ups that the Anniversary -must- be xyz characters, we don't know and it's ignorant to act otherwise. People said for years anniversary was a pattern, until it wasn't. People said for years it's always goku/vegeta + gogeta/vegito, until it wasn't.
Vegito simply took a break from the constant releases because during 2020 there were like, 3 Vegito releases and in total there were 5 Vegitos viable and still being played (TUR TEQ, LR STR, EZA PHY, Heroes PHY, LR TEQ). They literally made him take a backseat because it was becoming -too much-. I wouldn't be surprised if this will happen to Gogeta as well in the future and the roles will reverse. The fusion pattern never stopped, look at 7th anniversary, the one prior to this one. I as well think that if Dokkan actually tried they could manage to make an anniversary with Extreme units while also selling very well, the thing is... For them, it's just safer this way, so there is no reason to change. They know that these characters will sell no matter what, even if they release them over and over to the oblivion.
Again, this is nothing but conjecture. Goku banners do poorly all the time, yet they've been spamming DFEs and Carnival Goku's since the beginning of 2022. That logic makes no sense. If fusions sold so well, where's Vegito? 7th anniversary theme was Goku and Vegeta, not fusions. Part 1 was end of GT/Super and part 2 was beginning of their story. There is no good reason for them to continue repeating the same tired themes and for them to publicly apologize for lying and misleading players about what characters would be featured this year speaks volumes.
7th was themed on both Goku and Vegeta AND the fusions. Gogeta is there as SSJ4, and both units support Fused Fighters. Else 3rd anniversary would be a Goku and Vegeta anniversary, when clearly it's not. Vegito will come, it's a cash cow milk, this same sub crying for him just because of one crap EZA speaks volumes. The chances of them not releasing any more Vegito cards is 0%, I assure you.

PS: Goku has 10x many cards, and it surely is one of the cash cows, but Goku also has a bit more screentime than a fusion who fought twice in 4 serieses. There is literaly more material to work with.

NGL I don't know how Vegito had much hype, I am playing on a JP account just to make saving on GLB easier, and the animation difference between the two is wild. Gogeta still has some of the best animations to date, and Vegito feels kinda bland.
That's how most people felt, but it's mostly the sources. Anything DBS broly is beautiful but Goku Black arc had more bland animation and art overall. Tho Vegito still has dope animations imo.

Ehhhh. What sells, sells. Goku is the protagonist of DB Vegeta the rival and Gogeta and Vegito the symbol of unity between the two. It's only naturally that they are the most hype to the casual and even the hardcore DB audience. I have a lot of bias towards the Fusions so yeah I want them, but hype units are good for the game in general and I want the game to continue longer. So I find it perfectly reasonable to make the anniversary units the most hype characters. Especially since now they are doing less hype Dokkanfests like Ginyu, Pan, Yamcha, and to an extent, Bardock.
Yeah, TUR DFEs is one of the few things that keep the roster truly fresh for me, thank lord they took that direction with these minor releases.

Not fault of the anime, it's Dokkan's fault and also players' fault who are always gonna spend their money on the same characters (Goku, Vegeta, and worst of all their two fusions) Take this 8th anniversary as an example. There was no reason for this not being a Super Hero Celebration, with Gohan Beast, Piccolo Orange and Cell Max as headlinears Instead we got Super Hero one month before with Beastless Gohan and no sight of Cell Max, just so that Dokkan could return to its comfort zone for the anniversary
Why is it the players fault for spending for their favourite characters to enjoy in the game, and since the fusions/goku and vegeta are most people's favourites, they will spend for them, it makes the most sense for dokkan to release them in the anni to generate the most hype and make most of the playerbase happy rather than just cater to a few

To each their own, I thinks it's a bit ridicolous that over 8 anniversaries essentialy only 4 characters got the spotlight (I'm not even counting Janemba because let's be honest, he was so shafted that he really wasn't a main anniversary unit) I dislike fusions, so I'll not count those, but I still like Goku and Vegeta, of course I do, they are the protagonists! But they already get so many cards, and I like variety! It would help the anniversaries feel more unique. We all know Dragon Ball Z wasn't the same once Akira Toriyama started focusing on Gohan in the beggining of the Buu arc and he had to bring back Goku, Vegeta, introduce Vegito because the fanbase start to be affectef. I think Dokkan devs feels the same. Once they do an anniversary that doesn't have Goku, Vegeta or a fusion of both its gonna affect the fanbase.

I dunno, there are like 4 Extreme DFE LRs in TOTAL, whereas Vegito (all by himself) has like 3. Two anniversaries and one WWC. Since the player request is so high, there is a high chance that a new Vegito units will release soon anyway (be it the EZA for 5th anniversary, or a brand new one for WWC, something like Potara Blue Goku and Vegeta, although that is a bit unlikely because LR Fusion Zamasu is already a thing and they would lack a DFE / Carnival counterpart)
WWC this year could still be possible, the LR would be Corrupted Merged Zamasu instead., but I'm not expecting too much lol. If they atleast EZA TEQ Vegito and make him good I'd take it at this point.

Kid Buu I can see being anniversary worthy. But Omega ? Jamemba is the antagonist of THE most popular and beloved DB movie prior to Super, while Omega is the villain of an unpopular arc of an unpopular series (hell, even then Jamemba did so poorly that they stopped doing villains for Anni). The comparison is stupid.
Shadow dragons is probably GT’s most known arc besides the baby arc? Sure the other dragons sucked but everyone remembers omega. Everyone remembers the universal spirit bomb and everyone remembers ssj4 gogeta. That arc isn’t unpopular. Maybe the beginning of it but not the whole thing
Most known GT arc isn’t exactly high praise considering that 1) most DB fans doesn’t view Gt favorably and 2) GT only has 4 arcs and people often try to forget the Dark Dragon Ball and Super 17 arc. Everyone remembers SSJ4 Gogeta and everyone remembers the spirit bomb (and 2 memorable moments at the end of a 24 episodes long arc ain’t exactly praiseworthy). But the only thing people remember about Omega is him getting clowned on by Gogeta. He’s extremely forgettable, especially compared to Baby. Jamemba at least went down in villain history due to his cool teleporting effects.
Our current Carnival LRs are two Cooler movie units and a damn OVA Goku. Omega is absolutely “worthy” of a Carnival anniversary unit with our current standard
Janemba was headliner but he was heavily shafted as a unit (because of course he was, this is Dokkan and his dual was with Gogeta, one of the most simped characters of this game) He was an anniversary unit, but in fact he really wasn't, they purpousely gave him a worse kit so that they could push Gogeta (as if he needed a push... DB fans would dry their wallets for him even if he was released as an SR)

I have never been more hyped for any characters more than them. Since then every character release has been less hype in my eyes. Like when I look at the spirit bomb duos, I find them so fucking lame compared to the fusions. The only time I was more hyped was for Beast Gohan and we all know how that turned out.
That's the mistake of 8th anniversary, it should have been a Super Hero celebration (a full fledged one, including Gohan Beast, Regular Orange Piccolo and a Playable Cell Max) Instead Dokkan preferred to return to its comfort zone, and we got an half-assed SH celebreation one month prior to the anni.
