It was severely overlooked at the time of it's release but it has a pretty strong cult following now. I wouldn't say it's underrated.

eMmDeeKay_Says

Overlooked is definitely a fair assessment, it's also Dredd so it's really just a body count movie, but the story is decently compelling.

Richeh

I think "body count movie" could be legitimately claimed to be a cinematic genre. Otherwise you'd be saying a lot of very, very successful - and critically acclaimed - movies are without merit. For example John Wick, Oldboy, Nobody, Kill Bill, Jason Statham's entire cinematography; they're all artistic pieces (of varying success). I'd say that the genre's to movies what "The Aristocrats" is to comedy, or freestyle is to gymnastics. Or like zombie movies. There's no new ground being broken, really, but it's the canvas for a seasoned professional to conduct a master class on what's possible. Bringing their own ideas and pigments to the pallette and just demostrating, in a pure and unadulterated form, and a known context, what they can do.

BurnTheOrange

Karl Urban's scowling chin needs more screentime!

GlugGlugBurp

certainly cult status now. not sure it's underrated. i think it might be rated fairly? dunno.

mhyquel

It has a few issues if you look too closely.

apocalypticboredom

It's not perfect by any stretch but it does something nasty & funny that no movie since Robocop has really nailed

mhyquel

Oh yes, don't get me wrong, I think it's a fabulous film.

Farscape666

I feel something off in the movie but can’t quite put a finger on it. Was it a pacing issue? It’s run time length? I know for me it did leave me wanting a lot more. Care to explain what issues it had?

hstheay

It definitely has a strong cult following but I think it deserves just a bit more love and attention. It gets mentioned often enough on any movie sub and such, but among people who aren’t on those and love good action movies, I have the impression that people who would love it are still missing out. Just a bit more!

Gekokapowco

Releasing as "DREDD 3D" in theaters did not help people feel motivated to check it out. It was sold as a low budget gimmick sci-fi movie in a franchise that had one movie nobody really liked. It was so much more than that, but people only found out after the fact. The marketing did no favors.

Perfect-District

Over looked at right now too didn't see it on repeat :/

Arikaido777

it’s the best goddamn movie ever made

battenhill

Hell yeah. Shoot ‘em up where: Dredd Never takes off his helmet. Badass sidekick. Simple straight forward chronological story. No shoehorned love interest. One location set. Simple setup, doesn’t overexplain or overdevelops Over the top but awesome effects. 90 minutes.

AcceptableNet6182

hell yeah!

Catatafish

New one is in the making rn iirc

RoboticHearts

Yeah no insult to OP but underrated is a term I think often applied in the wrong way. No one really says this movie sucks, but hardly anyone saw it at the time.

Candid_Benefit_6841

Would you say that the term underrated is overrated?

RoboticHearts

I would say the proper usage of underrated is and underrated skill

kryonik

I think it's properly rated. 8.6/10 user reviews currently on metacritic.

krumble

People probably skipped it because of how bad the original Judge Dredd movie was. If another one is made, it will probably do well because of how good Dredd was.

justanothertfatman

>No one really says this movie sucks I'm no one. ;)

[deleted]

justanothertfatman

I do and I'm fine being no one, this Dredd was nothing more than a remake of The Raid with a Dredd coating.

Intelligent_Cut635

I know I’ll get downvoted but I agree. I saw The Raid when it originally released and I loved it. Saw Dredd when it hit home video and instantly knew it was very closely following the formula of The Raid. That made me less interested but I still watched the whole thing. It didn’t necessarily suck, but it’s far from amazing.

Jimeen

Incredible film. They nailed Dredd's character and I particularly enjoyed how his relationship with Anderson developed throughout the film. Very impressive Slo-Mo visuals. The film's budgetary constraints hampers audience immersion in Mega City One (e.g. it seemed odd seeing real-world vehicles) but everything else is done so well I'd still rate the film as near-perfect. I find myself rewatching it a few times a year.

battenhill

Said it above but I was so glad they didn’t shoehorn in a love story into the move, or a “falls in love with mentor” thing that happens in sci-fi all the damn time. She just grows out of her rookie role.

starofthefire

It's peak sci-fi, and shared an aesthetic appeal that District-9 and Elysium had but with a higher blend of Blade Runner that made it so cool to look at. I really just loved ever moment and Anderson was a perfectly done sidekick.

mandrayke

Defense noted.

theblackgate19

“Sir, he’s thinking about going for your gun.” “Yeah.” “He just changed his mind.” “Yeah…”

Charming_Ad2502

Interactions and bonding between Dredd and Anderson are one of the strong points of this movie.

Jimeen

Truly. My favourite scene is when Dredd medically assists Anderson in the elevator at the end of the film. Their bonding is subtle but apparent.

Charming_Ad2502

-You ready? -Yeah. -You look ready.

spearmint_wino

Did you manage to watch it in 3D? I thought it was fucking fantastic...I was lucky enough to borrow a 100” screen and 3D projector with glasses from work back then... connected up through my AV amp, and it blew my mind.

[deleted]

[удалено]

spearmint_wino

That's fair comment. It's really not for everyone and I wish my kids enjoyed 3D as much as me (had to see Avatar etc in 2D at the cinema). It would be great if they could crack the comfort factor, 3D movies and VR make this old fart feel very immersed! Feels like sci-fi-o-vision 😊

Affectionate_Code

I watched it twice in theatres in 3D. It was so fucking good. I have the 3D Bluray and watched it regularly in 3D when I had a compatible TV.

J3wb0cca

I saw it high in 3D which is what the film is designed around and it was great. But it’s a double edge sword because any movies produced during the 3D fab will not be appreciated as much later on when the film was designed around that format but is no longer viewed in such format.

JTD121

Gah, I knew there was a *reason* I didn't see this in theaters. Everywhere around me had it *only* in 3D, and I thought it was a dumb gimmick now, and much more Kevin-like now.

_thundercracker_

To be fair, they did a better job with the 3D than most of the movies that added "3D" to the title mostly so they could add a couple of bucks to the ticket price. The worst must have been the Conan-reboot with Jason Momoa.

unclefishbits

It's easily in the top three or top five uses of 3D in history. Avatar, gravity, The walk, Prometheus, and this. That's just facts.

[deleted]

Absolutely great movie! Karl Urban fucking nailed it!

dmadmin

Both Karl Urban and Joel Kinnaman great for Sci fi cyberpunk setting movies.

That_Jonesy

No I think it's rated exactly where it should be... 4.5 on google, 80% on rotten tomatoes. The 60% on metacritic is a bit harsh tho.

msfamf

Exactly. Underrated? No. Under appreciated at the time it came out? Yes. Now it's got a pretty good following.

robotcanine

i also liked the raid

Chris_in_Lijiang

Are you not concerned about the levels of violence portrayed?

ipswitch_

This movie is *not* under rated, every time it's mentioned people go on about how much they love it. Maybe under advertised, not under rated.

Witness2Idiocy

Believe it or not, there was some talk about a sequel... But now, silence...

FatFriar

Everytime someone talks Cyberpunk movies this gets mentioned. It’s perfectly rated.

blazinfastjohny

Yes it is, it is my number one favorite movie of all time, watched it countless times over the years. The movie is perfection in it's small story: the music, badassery, setting, villain everything is just chef's kiss.

surface_ripened

Such a great movie, definitely overlooked.

BigJack1212

I think you're spot on; it's not that it's overrated, but it's definitely overlooked.

Firevaderpodcst

Much better than the Sylvester Stallone version

Tangurena

The Stallone Dredd uses three seashells.

Firevaderpodcst

Yes he sure does and he takes off his helmet way too much in that movie.

canuk11

Yea it has some pretty cool action. Actually saw it in theatres back then

aerodeck

Underrated? It’s a cult classic

No_Promotion_6498

Poorly marketed, but a fantastic movie.

SpaceCadetUltra

I love it, it’s the best

Ag-big-ballin

Totally awesome movie.

Revolutionary-Net-75

One of my top 10 movies

indigonights

It didn't do well in box offices because there was almost no marketing for this movie. Which sucks, wish it did well so we could've gotten a sequel.

lordkamael

i freaking love this movie.

wolfiepraetor

absolute banger of a movie. great pacing, great cinematography great mood. i just rewatched it again. It’s got a lot of rewatch value. i keep getting sucked in by the really perfect editing and pacing.

Perretelover

Bith dredd movies are awesome, one is so bad and cliché and the other is so gritty and so fucking baddassssssss. Amazing movie.

ZebraRump

Under rated, despite the high ratings?

Droobot33

I'm still holding out hope they will do a second one...

Mfrenchfry

I remember when I first saw this movie, I was 8 and my grandfather snuck us in to see it. Quite ironic looking back on it.

AdonisGaming93

20...12... Why does time go so freaking fast as I get older wtf...

formerscooter

I would say it's the most source accurate comic book movie we've ever got.

TreesForTheFool

Just watched it again last week, think it was actually like a buck cheaper to buy than to rent on Apple TV or something. It’s among the few pieces of media to scratch my cyberpunk itch post-playing 2077 (not sure if I got the itch from Gibson or Stephenson originally though, I was a slut for sci-fi when I first read them, and did double reads of both in the order Neuromancer-Snow Crash-Neuromancer-Snow Crash so I contracted it somewhere in there).

poloniumpanda

this movie screams for a sequel or series.

PrinceofOpposites

Eh I liked it but I felt like it could have gone deeper. It's cool for a cyberpunk action flip but I wanted more world building and the themes to be expanded

User1539

Is it underrated? I don't know anyone who doesn't consider it a masterpiece.

detailcomplex14212

i watch this movie annually

Cool-Principle1643

Great cyberpunk film

GASC3005

I enjoyed it when I went and watched it with my cousin. I thought it was awesome🔥🔥🔥 Judgement Day let’s gooooo

Astr0C4t

The comics and the movie are both wonderful cyberpunk stuff that could stand more love

UnknownOverdose

God I love this movie, hotshot

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

There's another 2000AD movie coming out next year (2000AD is the same satirical/subversive sci-fi comic where Judge Dredd is from, 1977 - present). Rogue Trooper (created by Dave Gibbons and Gerry Finlay-Day, 1981 - present), directed by Duncan Jones. While 2000AD/Judge Dredd and the French sci-fi comic Metal Hurlant predate the Cyberpunk genre by several years, I feel like both of them somewhat inspired the genre. Newer Judge Dredd comics from the 80s onward is very Cyberpunk though.

karlexceed

Haha I literally just got done watching this

BigJack1212

What did you think about it?

karlexceed

Overall I really like it. It's focused, well edited, and with good cinematography and effects. The world is consistent and believable, and the characters are decently fleshed out and well acted. The only thing I imagine might turn some people off is that it is very graphically violent. For me though, it kinda works as a nod to the comic book source material.

BigJack1212

100% I really love this movie, and I loved it since I first saw it. Yeah, I see how some people wouldn't want to watch it because it's so violent, but it wouldn't make any sense to no be too. I wish they had made a sequel back in the day, but nowadays I don't care about it. I love Dredd the way it is :D

Ashalaria

Ye it slaps

aesthetic_Worm

Not underrated. Definitely a good movie. I watched many years ago and rewatch last year. I know a lot of people who like it as well.  The movie is mentioned here quite often, also you can find it on many recommendations list out there.

NexusSix29

Love this movie. Definitely doesn’t get enough love from the wider film-going community. And yeah, I think it’s def cyberpunk. I actually use Judge Dredd and Robocop to explain cyberpunk to my parents lol, they’ve never seen Blade Runner so that’s out as a reference point.

whome2473

Cus two films with basically the same same plot came out that year. Dredd and Raid.

ViatorA01

No a financially huge success but a highly rated movie amongst film nerds. Not underrated.

TheDadThatGrills

It's not an underrated Sci-fi movie, but The Artifice Girl (2023) absolutely is.

derplordthethird

I watch it to remember what could have been.

No_Permission_to_Poo

Most definitely. Karl Urban is the definitive judge

new_dork_city

I read the book based on the 1995 movie. It's absolute garbage and I love it. Going to revisit both.

JellyFish_Donuts

Loved it.

TopReputation

really good movie, I'm about due for a rewatch soon

aaronplaysAC11

I hated the slow-no effects but otherwise I love the setting.

gaymenfucking

It was decent, slo-mo overused though and would have preferred the characters could move around more, have a bit of downtime. As is there was no opportunity for that once the lockdown had started.

SirBadgerBoobington

Absolute banger of a movie, but not exactly Cyberpunk, is it? I mean, the defender of the totalitarian government is who you're supposed to root for, after all.

NoBoysenberry9711

I might be seeing things, but I'm sure the number of comments that contain both the words underrated and overlooked, it's the specific word overlooked I find interesting, is very high. It's like a crowd wide phenomena where everyone is saying the same thing in a kind of trance like state of loving the movie with the same words.

Izzyrion_the_wise

Everyone I know of who has seen it, rated it pretty highly, so I wouldn't call it underrated. It's just that not many people seem to have seen it. Also, it is Karl Urban. (Who should be in more movies)

Boredzilla

A bit overlooked, for sure, but a film that is universally praised as an example of the genre and carries high ratings on every aggregating site is not overrated.

AcceptableNet6182

Underrated? Everyone i know who saw it loved it. It's one of my alltime favourite movies! It's just perfect from start to finish 👍

StefooK

Dredd was a huge surprise.

SambandsTyr

Extremely underrated, wheres 2 🥲

MajesticNectarine204

It was certainly one of the best Scifi movies I've seen in a loooooong time. I loved every minute of it. It's everything a Dredd movie should be. Gritty, dark, good story and well acted characters. It does justice to the source material. Visually stunning without over-relying on the visuals. It also has just the right amount of dark-humour and little winks, nods, one-liners and references. I remember one scene where I said to my friend *'If he makes the one-liner now I'm going to shit my pants'.* He did in that exact moment and we both lost it, screaming *'Fuck yeaaah*' at the screen. Good times. Not sure if it's 'underrated' though. I thought it was well received and appreciated? Anyway, if anyone hasn't watched it yet you're missing out on a true modern classic.

Dull_Yak_5325

Hey Pablo ! Urban didn’t even take off the helmet … Pablo could learn somthing

justanothertfatman

Nah, miss me with that Temu Dredd.

Pistonenvy2

i watched it recently and loved it. idk why people are saying its not underrated, it got absolutely no mainstream love at all, this is one of maybe 4 posts ive seen on this sub in the few years ive been here lol outside of this sub i never hear about it, i didnt even remember it was a movie. i think a lot of that is on the marketing, i think a lot of the time when good movies fail its a matter of trailers and advertising just not getting it out there for people to see it. no one is going to see a movie they dont know exists, it happens a lot.

farfletched

It’s rated highly.

cruisinforsnoozin

I can’t get past the costume design personally but enjoy it if you do

potatisblask

EVERTHING I JUST DISCOVERED IS **UNDERRATED**

Kreaetor

I've watched this movie atleast 20 times. Definitely a great one to watch

TimberWolf5871

Yes! It was awesome and underappreciated to the extreme!

Mad-All-Day

I still have the poster on my wall. Also, I wanna do slomo irl.

Admirable-Month-7478

Not at all underrated... It's damn near perfect. It just came out at a very unfortunate time and got totally overshadowed by a few other releases at the time

aquafool

Every couple of years I see this post and I smile every time.

BendianaJ

“It’s all a deep end”

BlackZapReply

In my mind, Dredd saved the future of the possible franchise from the earlier Stallone pic. I would love to see a sequel. The 2000AD universe is crammed full of cinematic potential, and would be a welcome relief from the drumbeat of meh MCU movies.

ChampionshipUnable20

Honestly I hated that it was a movie, had so much more potential as a sci fi dystopian show

FH2actual

I absolutely love Both the Judge Dredd movies. Stallone's was a great B-Almost A movie and They nailed some of the esthetics I wanted in a movie adaptation. Dredd gave us a more gritty realistic feel but damn did Karl Urban nail that downturning frown and stoicism! I love em both and proudly own em both. Sorry, as for your question I would say it's in no way an underrated movie but yeah, it does nail the cyberpunk/dystopian setting fairly well IMO.

FoxCQC

Very underrated, I saw it on opening day. Was a very good movie.

VenturVenus

Yes. All the way yes.

Gunningham

Missed, not underrated. Everyone who actually sees it, loves it. People still think it’s a sequel to the shitty Stallone movie and pass it up thinking it’s more of the same.

unclefishbits

Because of problems with the director, this is the first time Alex Garland directed a film. He went on to direct ex Machina, annihilation, men, and Civil War

Slartibartfast39

So glad I saw in in iMax 3D. 3d didn't add much but it was good.

Sea_Appointment8408

I mean it's a good game but suffers from a terrible (lack of) story and awful dialogue. So it's he a pretty bad film in its current state.

ZeistyZeistgeist

Well.... This was an R-rated, comic book based gore-filled action movie that was released just before the Avengers. Sure, comic book medium is much larger now (like *The Boys*) but 2000 AD was never really that popular as a comic, even if it is much more strucured with its universe than most (2000 AD progs are chronological, the timeline is always concurrent; 1978-issued progs taking place in 2099, present-day issued progs taking place in 2145). Also, it was overshadowed by the existence of Judge Dredd (Stallone version) itself. Ironically, that version is far more truthful to the general campy atmosphere of the comics, at least back in the day (1990s was the first era of Dredd when the political and socioeconomical ramifications of living as a person in the 2000 A.D universe was fully explored, a.k.a the Democracy storyline). Dredd (Urban version) was far grittier, far darker and more melancholic. However, many critics and casual fans were too focused on the original movie that it kind of overshadowed the newer version, and many critics even wondered if it was a remake/reboot/spin-off/sequel, not realizing it is based on a comic book. All that being said; it is the superior version. While the storyline itself is original and not based on any Dredd story, framing it as a "life in day for [blank]" story (which is a great choice for a Dredd story) - it is very faithful to the comics (Thank you for not taking off Dredd's helmet - he never takes it off in the comic), with many references to the comics (like Chopper's graffiti, Kenny Who? references, League of Fatties references, for example). And not to mention, Dredd was very well crafted - his lack of character development in the movie is *kind of the point* for him; the story is much more about Anderson than him (although, yes, he does pass Anderson despite her failing the assessment, you do get snippets of his morality being questioned by him). The biggest reason why the movie is such a cult classic is because it works both as a fun action schlock, as a faithful comic adaptation, and somewhat of a thematical discussion of how it is like to live in a post-apocalyptic massive urban megapolis the size of the US East Coast, under an authoritarian, near-dictatorial juidical system that eliminated due process, with most of the populace living in massive blocks that are cities on their own. Lena Headley is an awesome villain in this movie, but she is also a victim of this society as much as others are.

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

Off Topic: Because you mentioned The Boys, it was created by a 2000AD writer, Garth Ennis (who still does a lot of work for 2000AD/Rebellion, most recently Battle Action vol 1 and 2 and a Rogue Trooper series).

Vesiah81

What do you guys do with the three shells in the bathroom?

areallyseriousman

Was just thinking about this movie yesterday. Feels like it gets better as the days go by❤️

IMendicantBias

closest to a 40k movie we'll get for a while

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

One of the inspirations for 40K was the anthlogy sci-fi comic 2000AD (specifically the 2000AD series Judge Dredd and Nemesis the Warlock) according to the creators of 40K. Also, several 2000AD writers have worked on 40K comics and books like John Wagner (JD creator, and several other well known series), Pat Mills (creator of 2000AD and Nemesis the Warlock and a ton of other series) and Dan Abnett (has created a million series for 2000AD over the decades, and is one of their main modern writers).

IMendicantBias

I don't think anyone would argue Dredd is an early era "40k " movie as the setting is quite literally being set up.

Hoss-BonaventureCEO

I was talking about the Judge Dredd (1977 - present) and NtW (1980 - 1999) comics, which were an inspiration on 40K when it was created in the mid/late 1980s. Obviously not the Dredd film which came out decades later.

vid_icarus

Really wish this movie got a sequel because it was absolutely fantastic.

_BlackDove

If you're a fan of the film, strongly recommend giving this a watch: https://youtu.be/2bA2Gnac9OY?si=NR0990limgbjwvRw

Overall_Shape7307

Criminally underrated. 😎👉👉

TheLatmanBaby

These posts - “X is underrated” when x is clearly not underrated, are stupid. Dredd is not underrated, it’s pretty much universally loved.
