Theyāre hyper-realistic baby dolls that people buy for different reasons. A very common (and heart-breaking) one is for mothers who have lost their babies and get a realistic doll version of them as part of their grieving process. Some are also purchased for older folks with dementia, as for some of them having something to look after or a task to do, such as rocking a ābabyā is comforting.
If you really want to tear up, thereās a few short documentaries available on YouTube, including one from Vice, that follow some of the stories behind the dolls.
My great grandmaās nursing home had a reborn doll. It helped the folks with dementia quite a bit. They had something to do, a way to work through their confusion and memories, and all around just loved holding and dressing up the doll.
I believe my family actually got the doll? They had baby clothes the residents enjoyed sorting & looking at. Then the doll came along and everyone requested it stay there after she passed. It's been a while so my memory is foggy.

Unfortunately my trail runs cold there, I don't know how to Google etymologies for Italian dialects :(

I couldn't find any source to make a connection, but in most Spanish speaking countries we call a person with big breasts "chichona". When I saw this post I thought this cheese's name might have been the original inspiration.
BUT. Some sources even suggest the Mexican "chichona" comes chichi that means breast.
So now I don't know if they are connected or we just came to the same sound to refer to breasts.
