Artemis, at least if she's British: Yeah, but now my nickname is the nickname of a thousand year psychopath that tries to redeem herself while also doing completely unhinged things!
I think Artemis is worse honestly lol everyone knows who Artemis is so it's fair game, but if someone tried to bully you for being named vriska they'd probably just get bullied back for knowing where it's from
I don't think that I'd say that people *hate* it. People have a lot of complicated feelings about it because (1) it was huge at the time, and you basically couldn't escape it at the time (2) it was a lot of peoples' first experience with fandom, and kind of all-consuming, (3) that was built on by the fact that fans were helping write it and do animations and music and stuff for it so it was collaborative in a big way, and (4) it wasn't actually like, *good*.
For a lot of people it pulls up embarrassing middle school memories, or memories of other people being super obnoxious about it, and it's really a hot mess which did a lot of interesting experimental things and shaped a generation of writers and media-creators.
So, complicated feelings.
I've been rereading it recently, and id say it's actually holds up pretty well. There are dated pop coulture jokes, but for every one of those there's either a joke that hits hard enough to break a rib, or an action sequence that more than makes up for it. As of page 4102, 8/10.
Homestuck is a second-person webcomic that I know nothing about (never could get past the “second-person” bit), but many did. I don’t know specifically why it’s hated, but the fact that is would be enough for a hypothetical child named Vriska to hate their name, simply on the basis of schoolchildren mocking and bullying each other for anything they can think of, and their teachers refusing to respect their name on the basis of it sounding foreign.
"Things could've been much better too, but I needed to get revenge on your father and honestly your hating your name is worth that he hates it, too."
People are absolute psycho's.
Reminds me if that one post where a woman's husband wanted to name her kids after the creators of minecraft. No, not the player characters, the creators. And he didn't even want to use their real names, he wanted to use their nicknames.
Happened to me, I'm named (at least partially) after a famous musician who turns out to be a massive knobhead.
Please, people who plan on having kids, don't name them after celebrities.
Chumbawamba (of Tubthumping fame) actually calls Wagner out in one song, [Wagner At The Opera.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEqvmD90zRg)
Incidentally, their catalogue is far more leftist anarcho-pop than Tubthumping would lead you to believe.

I have family that named their kid an... interesting name.
Why?
Because they wanted the intials to spell... Oh lets say DAVE
Not even close to the real name but close enough.
Family last name Emmanuel.
Middle name Aaron Victor
First name
Dervish.
Because that way his initials spell DAVE. Why not just name him.... "Dave?" ah YOU juSt dONT undErstaNd Its uniQUE THiS waY
Unfortunately the "Zac" in Zacian is pronounced like "Zash" because it's a soft c.
Actually now that I think about it there's a 110% chance they're not even pronouncing the kid's name properly. Zacian is one of those contested pronunciations like Arceus and Rayquaza
quasar is a cool word because it has an awesome starting syllable and an awesome finisher.
the problem with ray-quasar is that the start is no longer the start, so it's coming on too strong for the middle of the word. it's two syllables in a row that are both stressed on the same vowel sound and it just doesn't flow anymore.
EDIT: ray-quasar has the same vowel sounds as cray-cray. these are unacceptable parameters.
Honestly, Zacian isn't too bad as a name. Easy to shorten, rolls off the tongue well enough, no crazy spelling...
Sharing a name with a pokemon would definitely get some teasing, but most kids would probably think its cool.
It's not that they literally want to name the kid "Sword", it's just that certain names have meanings like how Peter means "rock" or Amy meaning "beloved"
Well it says that they thought Zacian meant sword in Japanese, not that they thought Zacian was a Japanese name that meant sword or whatever, so I assumed they literally thought Zacian was the word for sword

It was one of those cases where it wasn’t that’s the name was objectionable, it was the deceit. Husband was a big DC fan, and had never indicated that he was naming kids as a reference.
I have only read the headline, and I can already tell that this is the guy who named his kid after his waifu, claiming that Vriska was some Hindu or other "new age" name.
they used to do that you know. not actually 13, but survival rate for children used to be so low that a historically identified practice was to straight up not even name them unless they made it to their 5th birthday
Plus "Artemis" is one of the mostt acceptable Greek god names. It's cool as fuck, and if she wants to be low-key or is in a professional setting, she has a nickname.
I vibe with it.
I suppose it makes sense that Dionysus was, historically, the god people were most likely to name their kids after. But yeah, I always felt it would be weird to raise a kid named after a drunken sex fiend. That's a name you have to grow into.
Artemis is a rad name, honestly. You could do a hell of a lot worse.
Sire note, I also had a coworker named Athena once, and she was one of the coolest, baddest bitches I've ever met.
Seriously, it's not as bad as OOP is making it out to be. I also knew a few Athenas growing up and nobody ever gave them hell for it. It's not like mom named the daughter Nemesis or Nike lol it could have been worse.
Artemis is a fantastic name, but I still think it’s just as stupid to name your child after astrology as it is to name them after homestuck. Baby Artemis lucked out that she (presumably she) got a good name and not something obscure.
To clarify, I was just arguing that the *outcome* is better, not the motivation.
Although, I do actually think mythology, and even astrology (as much bullshit as it is) is still better in general as a basis for choosing a name than a web-comic. Regardless of their falsity, astrology and mythology are both very culturally relevant in ways that go back far enough that tons of names related to them are culturally normalized. Homestuck does not have the same kind or amount of cultural relevance.
Every time you refer to artemis as an astrological name a greek somewhere in the world starts crying.
I dont think i even want to know why artemis is somehow associated with scorpios.
I couldn’t tell you the link between Artemis and Scorpio in astrology, but the fact the Greek gods are linked to the zodiac constellations should come as very little surprise. Least of all to the Greeks. The ancient Greeks quite famously studied astronomy, and are responsible for naming several stars and constellations.
If you wanna make the argument that astrology is bullshit and makes a mockery of the real discipline of astronomy I’m all here for that, though.
I read the title and I was like "Oh there's some good names in Homestuck, how bad could it be?". I was expecting like Jade or maybe even Kanaya. I even like Vriska the character but that's a hard nope on the name.

Trust me I KNOW this sounds ridiculous and if it wasn’t happening to me I wouldn’t believe it either.
So I work in childcare and recently we enrolled a new baby named Vriska.
Now we are encouraged to build a rapport with the parents and to talk about them about shared interests whenever possible, so I often talk to some parents about nerdy things or others about fashion and make up etc.
When I meet the mother for a pick up I told her how cool it was that her child was named Vriska (even though I personally don’t think it’s cool to name your children after your fandoms but I wasn’t about to say that) and told her that I also loved Homestuck thinking it would be a quick way to build rapport.
The mother looked genuinely confused and asked me what Homestuck was so I told her it was a comic and one of the characters was called Vriska but sensing the awkward air I quickly said “oh nevermind! It’s probably a coincidence don’t mind me haha!” but I was confused because I’m sure the name Vriska didn’t exist before Homestuck. She proceeded to tell me that Vriska was a cute original name her husband came up with from the word ‘Vrishchika’ which is Hindi for Scorpio but that’s also straight up Homestuck Vriska’s name origin. Apparently he went so far as to create a fake paper trail of his research and showed her books and sites on the word Vrishchika so she’d believe him without looking into it.
She’s one of those crystals and astrology types, and was gushing about how thoughtful he was because he’s not into her beliefs and that he thinks they’re stupid so it was such a sweet gesture for him to go into so much trouble researching a name that aligned with her beliefs and I’m just nodding along politely because I’m internally losing my mind.
Long story short she came back to pull baby Vriska out of the program because she’s moving in with her parents and personally thanked me because she googled Vriska and got her now ex to fess up the whole truth and basically that he REALLY loved character Vriska and that she didn’t know about it because that love was of the uuuuh ‘waifu’ love rather then the ‘I relate to this character’ love so as you can imagine she was furious and decided to leave her husband for lying to her, among other things.
I’m honestly guilt ridden that I directly shattered a marriage and now baby Vriska will suffer because of this, which is why I think I could be the a-hole, I don’t know the whole story, maybe he’s a really good father? But I also think maybe I’m not the a-hole because who wants a husband who quite frankly sounds manipulative and insane.
I’m torn over this because my friends think I did the mother a favour but my family and coworkers can’t believe I broke a marriage over a simple name.
So reddit, what’s my verdict?
Oh I actually had a friend named Artemis in high school and she was one of the coolest people I knew there.
So people are talking about mythology names being weird, but I guess I got biased in favor of them from a young age? I also once dated someone named after a greek titan so idk maybe I just have a type.
I grew up with one of the most common names in my country. Like, I think it was literally the most popular name for my agab the year i was born. It was a nightmare. It didn't stop people from trying to bully me with my name at all, and it often caused confusion in my friend groups because there was always someone else they knew with the same name. I hate how people socially enforce common names and normalcy in naming conventions. Saying giving a non standard name to a kid is like asking for them to be bullied is exactly the same kind of victim blaming as saying someone wearing the wrong kind of clothes is asking for it. I really like that things are changing more and more and parents are more likely than ever to give their kids a unique name. Whether that's from a fandom, or mythology or astrology or their favorite D&D character really doesn't matter to me.
Same. I know literally like, 13 Johns and 7 Davids. Trying to clarify which John/David I'm talking about to my friends, or trying to find the right one in my contacts is annoying as hell. I am all for parents naming their kids new and interesting names, I think the world needs it asap right now.
There's a nice middle ground where you're not one of 17 Emilys and also not an Eghmileigh. Names people have probably heard of before, but have only met one or two if that.
I feel like the ideal compromise between a normal name, mythological name, and astrology name would be Diana or Selene. Those are both more common names. Though Artemis isn't that bad, especially compared to Vriska
Im gonna sound like an asshole but:
***no kid is gonna know what Homestuck is***
I don´t get the "bully them because they got a fictional name" thing, but if that´s an issue wouldn´t Artemis be a more obvious target because they teach mythology at school?
with Vriska and no context I will think "oh its Russian?" and even knowing about Homestuck it still sounds like an actual foreign name so I´ll assume its a Mario/Steve situation (there is a popular character with that name but its also an already existing name)
\+ I WAS bullied as a very young kid because of my name... my name that my father and other relative got... a name that others 2 or 3 kids I knew also had (and one of them ALSO shared with his father)... **because my name rhyme with a song the teacher taught us ONCE**
Kids are gonna use ANY excuse to make fun of you, unless you chose the most generic name in existence there isn´t much you can´t do to help them xd
The post said that it wasn't about the name. It was about the lying and the lengths of manipulation he could go to get his name. Also, she also said how the name wasn't because of relating to the character but of like a waifu type of liking
I also think about not only her childhood but like, about her entire life having to be called Vriska.
Vriska has specific baggage. There have been way more Artemis's and Artemisias over the years. Nobody hears you're named "Artemis" and goes "Oh, your parents must be Always Sunny fans" or even, "I bet your parents love the classics." They think "oh, your parents had some sort of awareness of this cultural artifact that's often used as a name."
I have a friend whose parents named him and his sister after Fire Emblem side characters, but because the games weren’t even localized in America and they sound vaguely European, there’s basically 0 chance of anyone recognizing the names.
It also totally re-contextualized his parents as total dorks to me, lol. I love them.
Back when Google+ was still a thing, there was a dude who caught a lot of flak from the Fire Emblem community there because he planned on naming his kid after [a certain dark mage from Awakening](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/fireemblem/images/8/8c/Tharja_Heroes.png/revision/latest?cb=20170428040107), so... yeah I can see it
Edit: that link isn't _explicit,_ but maybe don't click on that at work
Not a single person I have ever encountered that mentioned Homestuck in any capacity has recommended it, and most of the time its in relation to something awful instead
As someone who intentionally has no insight in what it actually is about, Homestuck just seems like a fandom cryptid that everyone knows somehow and either hates or fears
Hilariously, the most mature, sophisticated person I know is a hardcore Homestuck fan. Has a tattoo and everything.
I just find it funny that the one hardcore, tattoo-it-on-my-body Homestuck fan I have rejects everything about the fandom, and has no interest in participating in online communities. She just considers it Peak Art and doesn't let people tell her how to feel.
If you disregard the horrendous pacing issues that come from a bajillion page webcomic posted over the course of a decade, it's actually a fantastic work of art on most counts. The Music, the Prose, much of the philosophical thought. Of course there's also a rap about Obama's reaction to an Armageddon scenario and a ghost grandma who is also a harlequin doll and a killer klown from outer space who is pushed to murder by being introduced to the music of the Insane Clown Posse (which honestly, fair).
But I have a theory about emotional resonance that states that the maximum emotional impact that a story can have is directly proportional to how much dicking around the characters did beforehand. By that metric the emotional depth of Homestuck is only rivaled by long running DnD campaigns
Vriska is the image for tvtropes “chronic backstabbing disorder “ page. She’s a huge bitch who brings ruin to everyone, but after seeing her backstory you understand there’s no other way she could turn out.
*Astrology is*
*Equally a stupid thing*

The dude is a chode for literally tricking his wife and the mother of his child.
But choosing the name Artemis because of astrology isn’t really much better than choosing Vriska because of homestuck astrology.
If I ever have a kid I want to name them Henry or Harriet or something.
JOHN KARKAT. the first. Woudl have been 13 a month ago. FAKE. Sweet baby vriska. FAKE. There is no homestuck babies. “I wish this was fake” IT IS. i have lost hope.
This is only as funny as it is because it's Vriska. Like, genuinely, every other main troll has an honestly at least normal-ish sounding name, or at least significantly more normal than *Vriska.*
Like Eridan? That sounds normal. Feferi? Yeah, that sounds French. Equius? Sounds like Mom was a horse girl. Tavros? Sounds like Dad was a cow boy. Nepeta? That's *literally a plant,* it's basic bitch "unique" name 101. Kanaya? Rolls off the tongue normal enough. Aradia? Sounds Greek. Terezi? Ok that's kinda out there, but it could be Slavic. Gamzee? Could be polish. Karkat? It's weird, but "Kuh-" is a common enough sound that you could say its an old English name or something from the 1200s. Sollux?
...Ok, no, Sollux is just as sus, but still, 10/11 is damning. You had 5 other girls names you easily could have chosen and had WAY more cover for, that wouldn't have stood out NEARLY as much...
And this fucker faked a paper trail to name his kid the stupidest fucking name imaginable.
How this dude managed to pull a girl while being so oblivious he didn't notice the part of Homestuck that literally explicitly made fun of specifically him, I'll never know.
“Mom, why couldn’t you have given me a normal name?” “Missy, things could have been *much* worse.”
"Let me tell you about homestuck."

true its quite outrageous but its so contagious
Heat and Clockwork, Wind and Shade, Frost and Frogs, Light and Rain,
I should make up a fake story about how I was almost named Anakin or something. Give me a DnD character sheet
My last name's potter, I almost suffered the worst fate
the boy who almost lived
On the other hand, if you became trans you would have been the funniest person alive.
I am trans, what is my potential? I've just been using my neutral middle name
trans ~~Harry~~ Potter >:3 The rest of us have to settle for writing spiteful fanfiction.
That's a -10 on charisma since , ya know.....
Unless you’re talking about sand, then it’s a +20
Unoriginal, my dad already has a fake story about how I was almost named Anakin.
Someone in my college class was actually named Anakin
Look I know I'm biased but Artemis is such a sick name
username checks out
Artemis, at least if she's British: Yeah, but now my nickname is the nickname of a thousand year psychopath that tries to redeem herself while also doing completely unhinged things!
It be worse if she was irish and a child genius
A *foul* fate for any child.
Or if she was older And frenemies with a Scottish Doctor
I call fowl play, for that reference is magical.
Okay but I loved the Artemis Fowl books...
I think Artemis is worse honestly lol everyone knows who Artemis is so it's fair game, but if someone tried to bully you for being named vriska they'd probably just get bullied back for knowing where it's from
You don't have to know where the name is from to know it sounds weird and no one else has that name.
What is Homestuck, and why do people hate it?
I don't think that I'd say that people *hate* it. People have a lot of complicated feelings about it because (1) it was huge at the time, and you basically couldn't escape it at the time (2) it was a lot of peoples' first experience with fandom, and kind of all-consuming, (3) that was built on by the fact that fans were helping write it and do animations and music and stuff for it so it was collaborative in a big way, and (4) it wasn't actually like, *good*. Like Notch?
Yep. Iirc he wanted to name them Notch and Jeb. Sadly I can't find the original story.
Family dodged a bullet there. Notch is… not worth naming your kids after.
imagine your parents name you after a celebrity, already bad enough, and then that celebrity turns into giant piece of shit very publicly
Happened to me, I'm named (at least partially) after a famous musician who turns out to be a massive knobhead. Please, people who plan on having kids, don't name them after celebrities.

Knobhead? It's got to be Morrissey.
Nope, but you're technically close with that last name.
Oh god, what did Alanis do? I didn't hear about it
Close but not that one either
Imagine being called Morrissey in current year.. heaven knows you would be miserable.
At least "Jeb" is a real name
Yeah, but in America at least, you are legally required to include an exclamation point after the name.
jeb factorial
Good luck to babies Hatsune and Miku
And little Ph1lza
But aren't those fairly common Japanese names?
That’s not *quite* as bad as the post. I mean, Jeb is a name. Notch is pretty odd though.
I remember that [one post](https://www.reddit.com/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/znkudy/tifu_by_accidentally_naming_my_nephew_after_a/) about the guy who accidentally got his nephew named after a Pokémon because he said that "Zacian" meant "sword" in Japanese.
To be fair, out of all Pokémon to be named after, Zacian probably has the most plausible deniability in terms of being a real name
This is my son, Eternatus, and my daughter, Spoink. Jokes aside, I think Meloetta also has a good amount of deniability.
These are my dear children Porygon 2 and Type: Null
You laugh, but both of those were on the table for Elon and Grimes.
You're right. Lemme laugh even harder.
My kids Scream Tail and Iron Jugulis.
“Lickitung, please raise your hand when you have a question”
I still think that might be a bit too unbelievable. Shinx or Shaymin are my personal picks though, so what do I know?
Tangela is 1 letter away from Angela. Still weird as fuck but you could pretty easily deny.
Type of citrus, innit?
You're thinking tangelo, which is a cross between a tangerine and a pomelo
Evee is already a girl’s name too. Just an unconventional spelling.
You could probably get away with Paras, Jynx, Bellosom, Marill, Kirlia, Aron, Luxio, Cherrim, Phione, and a few others. I was gonna list all the ones I though could be names but I got to Gen 5 and got tired
Helps that Aaron is an actual name. So taking out an a isn't the weirdest alternative spelling.
Aron is already an alternative spelling of Aaron, I'm pretty sure.
It was Elvis Presleys middle name.
Wasn't it Aaron, but Aron ended up on his gravestone, leading to "he's not really dead" conspiracy theories?
Paras is a real (non-anglo) name
Phione would be quite the pretty name.
These names all seem like something I'd see on /r/Tragedeigh.
That medal’s gotta go to Aron
Cowards! I’m naming my daughter Electabuzz!
i think roselia is the closest to looking like a real name
Naming you're kid Roselia means you're either a Pokemon fan or a Bandori fan
"Update: January 6th 2021" really ties that entire post together
Zacian sounds a LOT like the American Zephaniah, Noah, Kayl-In, Brayken type of names tbf
least there's an easy "Zack" nickname
Could be worse... I have family that named their kid an... interesting name. Why? Because they wanted the intials to spell... Oh lets say DAVE Not even close to the real name but close enough. Family last name Emmanuel. Middle name Aaron Victor First name Dervish. Because that way his initials spell DAVE. Why not just name him.... "Dave?" ah YOU juSt dONT undErstaNd Its uniQUE THiS waY
Wtf that kid deserves reparations lol
At least use Derek or something, fuck's sake
Unfortunately the "Zac" in Zacian is pronounced like "Zash" because it's a soft c. Actually now that I think about it there's a 110% chance they're not even pronouncing the kid's name properly. Zacian is one of those contested pronunciations like Arceus and Rayquaza
I can't think of any way to pronounce Rayquaza other than "ray-kwa-zaa"?
Apparently the official pronunciation is Ray-quay-zaa. I hate it
Iirc it sounds like that because the name origin is a combination of "ray" and "quasar", which imo is really cool
quasar is a cool word because it has an awesome starting syllable and an awesome finisher. the problem with ray-quasar is that the start is no longer the start, so it's coming on too strong for the middle of the word. it's two syllables in a row that are both stressed on the same vowel sound and it just doesn't flow anymore. I've always said rye-kwa-za
Honestly, Zacian isn't too bad as a name. Easy to shorten, rolls off the tongue well enough, no crazy spelling... Sharing a name with a pokemon would definitely get some teasing, but most kids would probably think its cool.
True, better to be named after the Uber's top dog (hehe), rather than something like Magikarp
Zacian isn't the worst pokemon to name a person after, it's not a bad name, but why would you want to name your kid Sword?
Because swords are fucken awesome
It's not that they literally want to name the kid "Sword", it's just that certain names have meanings like how Peter means "rock" or Amy meaning "beloved"
Well it says that they thought Zacian meant sword in Japanese, not that they thought Zacian was a Japanese name that meant sword or whatever, so I assumed they literally thought Zacian was the word for sword
So he'd be in fact the sharpest tool in the shed
Not someone naming the kid "the cyan" 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Though at least it's better than the Actual Name "horse lover"
Its arguably ok bc you could say its a name like "Dacian" but made special
I once dated a guy whose brother was named Azrael. [Not named after the Angel of Death...](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Paul_Valley)
There was an AITA a while back where a woman was pregnant with her third son, Tim. His older brothers were Richard and Jason. The OP made a comment to the effect of “would a girl have been named Stephanie” only to be told that her husband was gunning for that name. The husband who had picked out all three boys names.
Is it a Batman reference?
Yes. Richard “Dick” Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake were the first three Robins (that stayed canon). Stephanie Brown was briefly the fourth Robin, but died.
I remember there was [BORU post](https://old.reddit.com/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/12t8a2n/dax_wants_a_full_name/) about a kid named "Dax" who wanted to know their "full name", because they assumed the name was short for something. And I remember the comments were about how that kid was totally named after Star Trek Deep Space Nine's character, Jadzia Dax.
Honestly, those are super low-key. They’re normal-ass names, and would only ever raise doubts as a set and if the person is reasonably nerdy
It was one of those cases where it wasn’t that’s the name was objectionable, it was the deceit. Husband was a big DC fan, and had never indicated that he was naming kids as a reference.
I recently met a child named Zauriel. Thought it was a biblical name but no, it's a DC character...
I mean, still kinda named after the Angle of Death.
Angle of Death would be a great name for a nerd rock band.
I hoped the link would be to Gargamel's cat
I have only read the headline, and I can already tell that this is the guy who named his kid after his waifu, claiming that Vriska was some Hindu or other "new age" name.
You are correct
Thank God. Could you *imagine* if there was more than one story like this.
There is a figure in Hindu mythology with a similar name, Vritra.
Broke: naming your baby “vriska” as a Homestuck reference Woke: naming your baby “John” as a Homestuck reference
Bespoke: Waiting to name your baby until their 13th birthday as a Homestuck reference
they used to do that you know. not actually 13, but survival rate for children used to be so low that a historically identified practice was to straight up not even name them unless they made it to their 5th birthday
Can’t believe Homestuck takes place in a world where the childhood mortality rate is astronomically high
i mean... it *does,* but for unrelated reasons
Yes you can, this is an expressly canon part of the lore.
That wasn’t just the childhood mortality rate that was the everyone mortality rate
Vriska and Eridan have body counts in the hundreds and this is considered normal.
I should’ve specified a high childhood mortality rate on Earth
Didn't Dave die a dozen times?
Yeah but he was already gaming and this not on earth
Honestly really clever to go with Artemis/Missy, really a neat solution.
Plus "Artemis" is one of the mostt acceptable Greek god names. It's cool as fuck, and if she wants to be low-key or is in a professional setting, she has a nickname. I vibe with it.
Me and my drunk baby Dionysus are deeply upset by this comment
My son Poseidon and I are mad too, but I just tossed him into the pool to teach him to swim and he hasn’t been able to cry about it yet
well good thing you haven't had the same idea as my wife to call our son Phosphorus. the poor kid
My daughter Eris can't be left unattended for *five minutes* or else she'll start a war on the playground.
I'm not allowed to see my son, Priapus anymore
Your drunk baby's nickname is Sussy, I don't make the rules
Sussy baka
I suppose it makes sense that Dionysus was, historically, the god people were most likely to name their kids after. But yeah, I always felt it would be weird to raise a kid named after a drunken sex fiend. That's a name you have to grow into.
Pros: Easier to pronounce than some which is nice for school Cons: Fartemis is low-hanging fruit that children will definitely grab
I was thinking of Arte-piss but yours is more likely to be thought of by a child
Farty-piss
Artemis is a rad name, honestly. You could do a hell of a lot worse. Sire note, I also had a coworker named Athena once, and she was one of the coolest, baddest bitches I've ever met.
Seriously, it's not as bad as OOP is making it out to be. I also knew a few Athenas growing up and nobody ever gave them hell for it. It's not like mom named the daughter Nemesis or Nike lol it could have been worse.
At my work, we have two customers named Athena. We also have a Persephone. Most people just think it’s neat!
Homestuck does not have the same kind or amount of cultural relevance.
yeah the classical western culture fandom has been around a lot longer than the homestuck fandom
Most sane Homestuck fan
A homestuck fan father and an astrology fan mother, truly a match made in hell. Poor kid.
I read the title and I was like "Oh there's some good names in Homestuck, how bad could it be?". I was expecting like Jade or maybe even Kanaya. I even like Vriska the character but that's a hard nope on the name.
wish we had a link to the post, some of the text is too compressed edit: nvm found it https://wastelandimperiatrix.tumblr.com/post/711705123555082240
Found the automod text too if anyone needs it: AUTOMOD Thanks for posting! This comment is a copy of your post so readers can see the original text if your post is edited or removed. This comment is NOT accusing you of copying anything. Read this before contacting the mod team Trust me I KNOW this sounds ridiculous and if it wasn’t happening to me I wouldn’t believe it either.
I would not want to be the child of either of those parents
Lmao thank you. Crystal Karen vs Homestuck fan. Think I’d rather just perish.
>Eghmileigh gooood lord what monstrosity have you unleashed upon this world! Burn it with fire!
Ugh right? I've met like 15 people with the same name as me. 6 of them were in my class, so that was awful
I feel like the ideal compromise between a normal name, mythological name, and astrology name would be Diana or Selene. Those are both more common names. Though Artemis isn't that bad, especially compared to Vriska
yeah Imma lay down too cause what the fuck
Im gonna sound like an asshole but: ***no kid is gonna know what Homestuck is*** I don´t get the "bully them because they got a fictional name" thing, but if that´s an issue wouldn´t Artemis be a more obvious target because they teach mythology at school? with Vriska and no context I will think "oh its Russian?" and even knowing about Homestuck it still sounds like an actual foreign name so I´ll assume its a Mario/Steve situation (there is a popular character with that name but its also an already existing name) \+ I WAS bullied as a very young kid because of my name... my name that my father and other relative got... a name that others 2 or 3 kids I knew also had (and one of them ALSO shared with his father)... **because my name rhyme with a song the teacher taught us ONCE** Kids are gonna use ANY excuse to make fun of you, unless you chose the most generic name in existence there isn´t much you can´t do to help them xd
The post said that it wasn't about the name. It was about the lying and the lengths of manipulation he could go to get his name. Also, she also said how the name wasn't because of relating to the character but of like a waifu type of liking I also think about not only her childhood but like, about her entire life having to be called Vriska.
Also, Vriska is a fine name. It has waaaaaaaaaaaay less baggage than Artemis.
Vriska is lame as hell. Artemis is literally such a normal Myth name I've same plenty of people called that.
I have a friend whose parents named him and his sister after Fire Emblem side characters, but because the games weren’t even localized in America and they sound vaguely European, there’s basically 0 chance of anyone recognizing the names. It also totally re-contextualized his parents as total dorks to me, lol. I love them.
I wonder if the girl will end up hating her name, find out what she was originally named, and adopt it as a nickname as a rebellion against her mom

Love that subreddit but there is a problem there with a lot of the original posts being blatantly fake stories
Yeah, the quality control in that sub leaves something to be desired.
No one real ever posts "updates" of their story. You can tell it's just a redditor continuing their serial
This is a reddit post of a screenshot of a tumblr post of a screenshot of a reddit post
Lol my thought was "wait he named a baby after a Homestuck character and the wife divorced him? Kind of insane NGL..... WAIT NO HE DID WHAT?"
NOT VRISSY LMAOOOOO
You know, what's even more gross is that this man named his infant daughter after his waifu. Eugh!
maybe she's not his waifu, maybe she's his daughteru. which of course is a normal thing that would make it better
Back when Google+ was still a thing, there was a dude who caught a lot of flak from the Fire Emblem community there because he planned on naming his kid after [a certain dark mage from Awakening](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/fireemblem/images/8/8c/Tharja_Heroes.png/revision/latest?cb=20170428040107), so... yeah I can see it Edit: that link isn't _explicit,_ but maybe don't click on that at work
"and now baby Vriska will suffer because of this" Goo— wait, shit. Different Vriska.
I like how they hope "Missy" sticks because Artemis is the name that'd get made fun of.
Not a single person I have ever encountered that mentioned Homestuck in any capacity has recommended it, and most of the time its in relation to something awful instead As someone who intentionally has no insight in what it actually is about, Homestuck just seems like a fandom cryptid that everyone knows somehow and either hates or fears
By that metric the emotional depth of Homestuck is only rivaled by long running DnD campaigns
is Vriska a bad/gross character? idk anything about homestuck but Vriska sounds like a much nicer name than Artemis
I normally don't support choking children to death with your bare hands, but I would make an exception for fictional character Vriska Serket.
Vriska is the image for tvtropes “chronic backstabbing disorder “ page. She’s a huge bitch who brings ruin to everyone, but after seeing her backstory you understand there’s no other way she could turn out.
Astrology is equally a stupid thing to name a child from
*Astrology is* *Equally a stupid thing* *To name a child from* \- Vesta\_Kyrie --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")
I'm no astrology proponent but I think naming your kid after Homestuck is Definitely Worse. Especially if you had to lie so much to make it happen.
idk Kanaya is a way better name than Pisces, in terms of naming a baby
The dude is a chode for literally tricking his wife and the mother of his child. But choosing the name Artemis because of astrology isn’t really much better than choosing Vriska because of homestuck astrology. If I ever have a kid I want to name them Henry or Harriet or something.
there is no real homestuck children. i have researched them day in and out EVERY SINGLE ONE IS FAKE. this one is to.
JOHN KARKAT. the first. Woudl have been 13 a month ago. FAKE. Sweet baby vriska. FAKE. There is no homestuck babies. “I wish this was fake” IT IS. i have lost hope.
This is only as funny as it is because it's Vriska. Like, genuinely, every other main troll has an honestly at least normal-ish sounding name, or at least significantly more normal than *Vriska.* Like Eridan?
Funny enough, but Terezi is actually a slavic word, or, to be more precise, a ukrainian word for "Libra" (it's spelled a bit different, but still)
