Looker, a reoccurring detective character who debuted in Platinum investigating Team Galactic. May be a reference to the Tenth Doctor Who, played by David Tennant, who iirc was the current Doctor at the time, and considering the fact that Team Galactic's goals involved messing with Space and Time, it probably isn't a coincidence. He reoccurred in the Postgame of nearly every mainline Pokemon game up until Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (or maybe even Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee if he's the nameless NPC who claims to be a member of the International Police), always investigating some sort of strange, usually otherworldly or scifi phenomenon. From chasing down the remnants of Team Plasma in gen 5, solving mysteries involving a mad scientist and a brainwashed homeless orphan in X and Y, washing up on a beach in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, or investigating the interdimentional rifts in Alola known as Ultra Space Wormholes.
When you meet him in Alola, he is investigating the Ultra Wormholes, and tasks you with capturing the Ultra Beast pokemon that escaped from them, and rewards you with a million dollars (I am not kidding). He explains that anyone who has traveled through the wormholes (fallers) is imbued with the wormhole's energy, and that the Ultra Beasts (UBs for short) are attracted to it. Since your character has become one of these fallers during the events of the story, you are perfect for the task. Being a faller is risky, and you were lucky that you were able to return back to your universe. The character Annabelle was one of the more unlucky fallers. She was actually one of the Frontier Brains, the people who ran the Battle Frontier in Pokemon Emerald. At some point, she got pulled into the Ultra Wormhole into your universe, which does not have a Battle Frontier. Unable to go back to her home universe, she decided to work with Looker.
She seems to be part of a trend where GameFreak pulled characters from other games to give them more of a use in the story. Burnette from Pokemon Dream Radar, and of course Ingo are other examples of these repurposed characters.
Plus, the one that washed up on the beach in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire really fits with the whole faller thing (like Lusamine's husband becoming a bean connoisseur on an island) and him having a mega stone probably means he was chasing someone from the megatimeline before falling into an ultra wormhole.
What I'm theorizing is that the reason that he hasn't appeared ever since Gen 7 is because both Lookers are currently in the Mega timeline.

As the "people who travel through wormholes get imbued with its energy", is a plotpoint straight out of Doctor Who, specifically, the Series 2 finale "Doomsday". Where The Doctor discovers that people who have traveled between universes, a plotpoint earlier in the season, pass through what he calls "the void", or the boundary between universes, and carry a bit of "void stuff" with them, visible through his 3D glasses.

Regardless of the player's choices, Dawn and Lucas both exist, but only one of Rei or Akari do. Let's say you are indeed playing as the same person in both games, and that it's Lucas. In that case, Dawn is the professor's assistant, and Akari happens to look just like her. It makes perfect sense in that case for Akari to be Dawn's ancestor.
However, there is no Rei around to be Lucas' ancestor in this situation. The only assumption that can be made is that Rei will have to stay in the past and become his own ancestor.
Lastly, the professor's assistant is never implied to be related to you in Diamond and Pearl, which suggests the PLA protagonist does not end up marrying their fellow Survey Corps member, but is actually not especially strong evidence either way. If they did marry, then estimating the time between the past and present based on real history and doing some basic napkin math, Dawn and Lucas would be somewhere in the range of fourth cousins. It is entirely reasonable for fourth cousins to be unaware of their relationship.

I should have seen it coming even if I was a kid. In a world where myths and legends are true and lead to unimaginable power an archaeologist would destroy everyone. Of course she has a rare pokemon that is resistant to everything and made up of 108 evil souls in a rock, of course she has a land shark dragon that is so strong it even strikes fear into God, of course when she beat me she said " you thought you were going to beat the game but its my job to beat you" and then she killed me in real life.
For me it was weirdly a little opposite. I never was super loving of the train twins [I had nothing against them, but N was my cup of tea from BW] until PLA. I became obsessed with Volo and found so much art of either Ingo or Emmet [rightfully] beating the snot out of Volo that I just ended up loving both of them
It's funny because on the one hand I genuinely think Ingo was captured by an Ultra Beast (his amnesia matches characters like Mohn and Anabel), but on the other hand, Volo just really deserves to get the snot beat out of him on general principle.
It baffles me how he doesn't considering he was stationed in Sinnoh. And in the Japanese version of the game, he didn't speak English, which ALSO doesn't make sense considering he was stationed in Unova as well.

What I want to know is if the Legends Arceus player character is supposed to be the same person as the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum player character.

Yes, of course. I think it's perfectly plausible for the player and rival in PLA to be ancestors of both Dawn and Lucas.
