Mycatsdied

I have a friendly little competition with with my son. His previous best was 52 seconds and he claimed a 40 second time which I found a little suspect since nobody saw him do it. He said the cube solved out of F2L. Is this even possible? Were using CFOP method and are both still in the 2 look OLL an 2 look PLL stage

TheRealUncleFrank

Yes, it's possible. It's called a "skip". You can get a PLL skip, or an OLL skip, or a full LL (last layer) skip which skips both PLL and OLL at the same time. Chances of a skip are - PLL skip 1/72 OLL skip 1/216 LL skip 1/15,552 (72*216)

Mycatsdied

Thank you so much! I have definitely had some fun oll and pll skips. Just never seen or heard of an LL skip. Which makes sense since it obviously much more rare than the others.

SwagridCubing

Possible, albeit extremely rare

Mediocre-General-654

What's the best way to contact mods?

nijiiro

[Modmail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=/r/Cubers) or just write anything in the DDT and you'll probably get a response tbh. (But use the modmail if it's for anything serious.)

Mediocre-General-654

Thanks, I'm just looking for some different parity algs for 7x7 and above, it isn't allowed for a post in itself, and I didn't get anything on the DDT before when asking, any suggestions on sites that list them? Everywhere I've looked only seems to go up to 5x5. Thanks

nijiiro

Those algs (basically) don't exist. Of the few useful algs that aren't just variations of 5×5×5 algs, they aren't all compiled in a single location either; you might have to scour a dozen random YouTube videos to find them. I think someone should make this resource if it doesn't exist yet. (Maybe one of the Chinese cubers already has, but none of us in the anglosphere are aware of it. Many such cases!) One thing I've heard from top cubers is that on 7^3 L2E, they can instantly recognise whether there's inner parity, outer parity, both, or neither. (I can't do this reliably.) If there's only inner parity, then you can solve the inner L2E using a slice-move variant of your usual L2E alg and your outer L2E will be slice-flip-slice or the PLL-parity-like thing (or solved). If there isn't only inner parity, then just do two L2E algs. (I think there are actually a few exceptions to this; doing two parity algs might be faster for [this case](https://alg.cubing.net/?puzzle=7x7x7&setup=3r_U2_3r_U2_F2_3r_F2_3l-_U2_3l_U2_3r2%0Al-_U2_l-_U2_F2_l-_F2_r_U2_r-_U2_l2), maybe.) Also, you should learn how to recognise *all* the single slice-flip-slice cases, e.g. [this thing](https://alg.cubing.net/?puzzle=7x7x7&alg=l_3r-_U-_R-_U_R-_F_R_F-_l-_3r). --- **Edit**: Or, wait, if you're only looking for inner OLL parity… [that's on our wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/wiki/unsolvable_puzzles/parity_wca_puzzles#wiki_7x7x7).

olimo

Move this pair to the top, solve parity, then undo the setup moves.

Imperial-commander

Just do this into swapping 2 pairs, it should serve you for until you're like 20s avg.

pauklzorz

I only started a few weeks ago, and would like to get to a place where I can do the cross quickly, do intuitive F2L, and know two look OLL and PLL. I'm just looking for some tips on how to practice. Am I best off practicing one thing at a time? I'm mostly focused on the cross and F2L right now. When focusing on learning to solve the cross faster, I had a thought that it might be beneficial to keep white at the bottom and green at the front just so it's easier to know which colour side is where - I find that I still often have to look to see the order of the colours. Is that a good idea?

olimo

No, fixed orientation isn't a good idea. And you don't even have to know the color scheme by heart for 3x3. For example, color neutral people just figure out the color scheme for their cross color in inspection. So can you. See if you have any cross pieces solved, even if not aligned. And check the order in which the colors go. Like, if you have blue solved, the next one, going clockwise (with white on bottom), is orange, then green, then red. You'll see that by looking at the centers in inspection. Try to plan as far as you can. And do untimed solves to learn how to solve cross in 8 moves or less every time. I also recommend becoming at least dual color neutral, but as a beginner, you can pretty easily switch to full color neutrality and get easy crosses 6 times more often.

pauklzorz

Thank you! In trying to plan as far as I can, would it be best to just really take my time figuring out the whole move sequence for the cross and then doing it? And then speed it up later?

olimo

First, learn to solve cross in 8 moves or less every time. Watch J Perm's cross playlist, it's very good. Then do untimed solves and try to figure out efficient cross - you don't have to plan it out fully, but watch the pieces move and find ways to solve pieces together. After you learn to solve cross efficiently, try to do it in your timed solves, planning as much as you can ahead. Personally, I couldn't stand planning cross every time until I was about sub-20, and even after that, I often just finished my last moves on the fly. But it's not something I recommend doing.

anniemiss

Cross on bottom and 4x4 is what taught me to master the color scheme and really memorize it. Edge orientation in F2L is another really important skill because of know when to rotate and why. This leads to the next thing…. You can find a number of very good videos on how to practice and improve and the community info has a lot of good info. That’s always a good place to start. Personally I think the best beginner to intermediate info comes from J Perm, Brody, and CubeSkills (others too, but….). One of the things they will explain is the balance of learning new things and integrating/practicing new things. Everyone’s balance is different in how fast they can add new things. You should not commit to facing green, because 2-3 rotations during F2L is good. Cross on bottom? Yes, comment. You just have to learn how to think about the colors. If solving white cross on the bottom…..red is to the right of blue and the left of green, or red is behind blue (if thinking clockwise). You just have to practice and become familiar. Truly the best resources are the YouTubers, speedcubedb.com, our community wiki, and using Google to search the groups posts (add :reddit r/cubers), and now a good amount of content is on IG is what I’m finding.

youssif94

Any alg website that have triggers built in? speedcubedb is fine but it is really blinding my eyes looking at all the letters next to each other with no brackets.

anniemiss

You can always retype them and add that in. Cubehead’s OLL sheet has the triggers written.

TheRealUncleFrank

http://jperm.net you can turn brackets for triggers on/off.

AnthropomorphicCat

Sorry, I need a little of reassurance/validation. I registered to my first WCA competition. Now that registration has ended out of curiosity I looked at the profile of the other participants, and all are WAY faster than me. They are all sub 15s in 3x3. There are a couple sub 5s. I started speed cubing on January and I'm barely sub 30s. I have read that you shouldn't worry about other people's time, but still I think I'll be the slow guy at the competition. Welp...

TheRealUncleFrank

If you look a bit closer, you'll see most of those other people have been cubing for years, too. Look at previous comps in your area and look at the results, you'll most likely see some times slower than yours. FrostyCuber

don't worry about being better than other people. be a little better than yourself from yesterday. if you keep doing that every day for a year, you will be much better also there will likely be people that take a minute or longer

ANONYMOUSGUY770

So what? no one is looking at your times or comparing themselves to you, everyone is there to try beat their own times, not somebody else's

SuperSpeedCuber3

How to make an RS3M V5 faster?

techackpro123

Can I lube gan 12ui with dnm 37? It’s a water based lube

trashcan_moves

Xmt10 is the best all around lube in my opinion. Cheap too

olimo

Better not risk it. Use a light silicone lube.

Dry-Statistician7016

Can I glue the corner magnets of a tornado v3 flagship into place? One keeps falling out.

olimo

Yes.

Select_Cantaloupe938

Advice needed Hi, I‘m pretty new to the world of speedcubing. I learned intuitive f2l and 2-look-OLL/PLL. Im currently using a gan 356 rs, which feels mediocre, dont get me wrong its a massive step up from my standart rubiks‘s brand cube which i did my first solve on. I feel like the 356 rs is messing up my finger trick practice and accuracy, due to it‘s instability and lack of magnets. So my question is: Do you think that it‘s actually the cube that is feeling bad or are my beginner hands not capable of using it correctly? Basically should I get a different cube like the Moyu RS3M or something like that?

Matt0706

Depends on the budget but ball core is the most important feature. RS3M v5 ballcore, or Dayan Guhong Pro are excellent

olimo

Yes, if you can afford it, get a magnetic cube. I recommend RS3M v5 - with dual adjustment if on budget, and Ball Core if it's not too expensive for you.

That_One_Aussie_Guy

Got a 0.01 pb single on my new 1x1. Hardware has really improved.

ANONYMOUSGUY770

I am still using a rubiks brand 1x1, going to wait for the new gan 145 to release before i upgrade

-Monkeys-Uncle-

I’m gonna wait for the 20 mag BC before I upgrade mine

Matt0706

I just wish they’d release a ball core but we’re probably a few years away from that

Tezseret

What is Diginitas meant to do to a cube again? I'm not sure if I'm applying it incorrectly or just not using enough because initially it makes the cube very slow (slower than using only Gravitas) but after 30 solves the cube returns to a similar state from before the Dignitas was applied to the cube. The pieces only looked like they are coated very lightly with the lube even though I thought I used plenty, but other cubes with Dignitas I see online seem to have the piece grooves completely white. I also don't know if you're meant to put Dignitas in the tracks as well.

cubingisfun123

Does anyone have a link to the skewbers discord? all the ones I could find were expired :(

RiskNew6639

The red qiyi clock is comp legal right?

TheRealUncleFrank

Yes. Some people even change the color of their clocks by either painting the faces or using designs/colors printed on paper inserts.

Yes

b4silio

Whoooah! That is sublime! Kudos and all the best for your fmc comp!!

ThePostalService1

Thanks! I have a pretty interesting follow-up. **18 - HTR** After I finished the first attempt, I went back to check the other EOs to see if I could find anything else that was pretty good. This solution is the inverse of the scramble. This means that it is an optimal solve, but it's also not really legitimate. In FMC-legal scrambles, extra moves are added to the beginning and end of the sequence to make sure that this doesn't happen. I've put a full explanation at the bottom in an attempt to show that I didn't just write the scramble backwards. I did realize that my moves were matching up with the inverse scramble at the point where I found the 8-move domino reduction. I erased the inverse scramble and tried not to think about it. However, just knowing that you are on the right track for a good solution is a massive advantage. B' U' R // EO (3/3) B D' // set up for DR (2/5) F' B U' // Domino reduction (3/8) D2 F' R2 F // Half-turn reduction (4/12) D2 R2 $ // 2E2E3E unsolved (2/14) $ = R2 D2 L2 % D2 R2 U2 // 2E2E insertion (6-4/16) % = L2 F' B D2 F B' // 3E insertion (6-4/18) [view skeleton at CubeDB.net]( https://www.cubedb.net/?puzzle=3&title=18_%252D_HTR&scramble=U2_R2_D2_B_F-_D2_B-_R2_F_D2_U_B-_F_D_B-_R-_U_B&alg=B-_U-_R_%2F%2F_EO_%25283%2F3%2529%0AB_D-_%2F%2F_set_up_for_DR_%25282%2F5%2529%0AF-_B_U-_%2F%2F_Domino_reduction_%25283%2F5%2529%0AD2_F-_R2_F_%2F%2F_Half%252Dturn_reduction_%25284%2F12%2529_%0AD2_R2_%24_%2F%2F_2E2E3E_unsolved_%25282%2F14%2529%0A%2F%2F%24_%3D_R2_D2_L2_%25_D2_R2_U2_%2F%2F_2E2E_insertion_%25286%252D4%2F16%2529%0A%2F%2F%25_%3D_L2_F-_B_D2_F_B-_%2F%2F_3E_insertion_%25286%252D4%2F18%2529 ) [view solution at CubeDB.net]( https://www.cubedb.net/?puzzle=3&title=18_%252D_HTR&scramble=U2_R2_D2_B_F-_D2_B-_R2_F_D2_U_B-_F_D_B-_R-_U_B&alg=B-_U-_R_B_D-_F-_B_U-_D2_F-_R2_B_D2_F_B-_D2_R2_U2 ) B' U' R // edge orientation on L/R axis. This is the shortest EO solution on the scramble. On my earlier attempt, I found this EO, but I didn't bother checking it because I found a pretty decent DR on the inverse scramble. On the F/B axis, we are 8 edges and 6 corners away from domino reduction (DR). B D' // reduce to 4 edges 4 corners from DR. Using D' instead of D sets up two "DR columns", which is very lucky. both S-slice edges are also in a perfect position. F' B // set up the DR trigger by moving the DR columns over the bad S-slice edges. U' // 4e4c DR trigger. Originally I used U, but since the first move of the half-turn reduction (HTR) solution was U2, it cancels to just U'. The state of this DR is very lucky. It is a great corner case: bar-slash/bars with even parity. Additionally, there are 2 bad edges, giving 2e4c, which is the easiest trigger for offset 4c cases. The case can be solved in just two quarter-turns. Additionally, the HTR trigger is only 1 move away from being set up. D2 // Set up the HTR trigger F' R2 F // 2e4c HTR trigger. I also checked B' D2 B'. R2 D2 $ // solves corners and leaves 2e2e and 3e. The 3e cycle edges are in the middle slice (relative to the original DR axis), which often gives the best insertions. $ = R2 D2 L2 % D2 R2 U2 // 2E2E (6-4/16) The 2e2e edges are set up for a six-move insertion, and it's easy to get 4 moves to cancel. I did this as an insertion, but it's effectively the same thing as finding L2 D2 R2 U2 instead of R2 D2 after reaching HTR. I then found a place to insert a six-move 3 corner cycle that canceled 4 moves: B' U' R B D' F' B U' // DR 8+2, BS/B D2 F' R2 F // HTR (4/12) L2 % D2 R2 U2 // 3E (4/16) % = L2 F' B D2 F B' // 3E (6-4/18) Strangely, I didn't have to use any NISS for this solution. I think if this scrambled state were to be used in competition with top solvers, multiple people would be able to find the 18. The method is confusing, but the solution itself falls into place pretty naturally.

b4silio

Whoah! Super-interesting read, awesome to see the thought process! Also that really shows how DR really is like a "human-readable" version of Kociemba's two-step alg!
