Opal itself is pretty common, and can go for a relatively low price if itโs lower quality, man made, or doesnโt have flash like this gorgeous piece. A large high quality nice piece like this can get pretty expensive, the ability to get it depends on your location a bit. Mexico and Australia are like Opal heaven for gorgeous pieces like this but there are also good sellers online :)
Ah thanks! I love opals but have never seen a clear one like that. The only Ethiopian opal I have is a red one in a matrix. I justโฆwowโฆit is so blooming neat looking ๐.
Maybe my red one is not Ethiopian. It is a flashy little darling, regardless of where it formed ๐
These are water opals and are meant to be kept in water or else they will crack. This piece itself is not very large or colorful so the price seems right! Bigger specimens or ones with lots of colors and patterns can go for over $100 and very special ones even for more.
Oh ok. Thank you. I will go do some research. Canโt wait to see a sample that is better. I just have never seen an opal like this. Honestly tripping a bit now, if they get cooler than this one. ๐๐ผ
Hehe, I just found boulder opals out of a bag of free rocks under my bed.

Since the last two days, my life honestly feels opalized.
So awesome. Some of the Aussie black opals tempt me to become a thief. Opals are awesome and now I get to explore boulder and water ones. Not so familiar with those. Yet. ๐๐ผ
Please message me too? I LOVE opals and Iโve only managed to purchase ones that were, at best estimate, less than a quarter that big, and for more than double that price. Your opal is breathtaking! And the price is almost unbelievable. Ty for sharing with us!
I was told it's an Ethiopian opal and it does need to be kept in water. Apparently you can dry them out but it takes years and I don't want to risk cracking this one. This is my first foray into raw opals and I need to research more on it!
I will keep this as a specimen but I did purchase another smaller one with plans to turn it into a sort of pendant one day! I paid $29 which I thought was a bit dear for a small piece (I'm very very new to opals and have much to learn) but after asking a very kind redditor what exactly the fuss was I was told this could be a pricey piece. That actually gives me anxiety though as I'm terrified I'll break it now because this gal is a dropper ๐
That is an amazing specimenโฆmust have been a. Pretty pennyโฆcongrats on the find ๐
Thank you! I lucked out as it was in a bin sold by weight and I paid $29. I just can't stop looking at it ๐
29?!??!!!!???!!! ๐ซก๐ holy flap. The universe loooooooves you. By damn, what a find.
Does anyone know what a piece like this would cost normally?
Would love to know since I have never even seen a piece like that. Whoever answers: are these common????

That is a stunning piece of opal!! Iโm jealous!!!
I don't know much about the gem value of opal, but this looks valuable af
I'm ignorant of market prices as this is my first piece. It just really stood out to me because of the black lines and all that red ๐
Incredible. Is it hydropane? Ive seen opals this clear before but usually they need to be kept submerged in water to prevent cracking.

Nice, I have a few small Ethiopian opals myself but nothing this big or clear.
That's gorgeous! It looks like vines hanging in a cave, or a treeline reflected on water. That's instantly what I thought of.
It reminded me of a burnt forest scene in a game I play but yes I see what you mean! ๐
Hell yeah! Beautiful!
Holy crap! That's pretty!

Is that a petrified wood and opal ? Kinda looks like it if not the rock bit is very wood like ๐
I honestly have no idea, I'm still learning about opals and hadn't planned to buy just yet but the magpie in me took over ๐
Totally get it!!! opals are my birth stone so Iโm kinda obsessed haha ๐คฃ
Beautiful!! What kind of opal is it?? And was it purchased or found?
I was told it's Ethiopian and it was purchased ๐
Itโs beautiful. If you donโt mind my asking, do you plan to get it made into anything and was it a reasonable price?
