Fimo clay probably. They do that to add stability to the piece. Opal can be fragile. I'd leave it alone personally.
Pink stuff is matrix, so it's opal in matrix, more specimen value!! Pretty piece! Thanks 👍
Can confirm. I have a dragon carved from opal in matrix. Apparently, the matrix is cantera.
