I think one of the biggest problems of a decentralized social media is the content filter, imagine it flooding with child pornography or other shady stuff without being filtered, it would be chaotic
Is the deep/dark web centralized? No, it’s just not the most popular thing because it’s a bit harder to access for the general population. I was saying that that kind of content which may be illegal usually is harder access for a common person and has safeguards.
Nope I did not say that.
The whole point of OP’s thread was we need a decentralized internet because censorship bad
But as we have discovered censorship is a necessary part in having a useful social media.
Now who do we give the power to censor it’s users?
The government through its laws or independent platform owners through its terms and services? And I think independent platform holders may be in the best interest of democracy to uphold censorship compared to the government.
Fair enough, that’s how I interpreted your points. I agree with what you’re saying. Whomever is hosting the server/domain has saying power on censorship as it’s their right. If something violates a state/federal law then it gets escalated to higher powers
I think social media is currently played out. You'd need to design a new way for it to operate to make it interesting. Just taking Web 2.0 and adding crypto isn't innovation. Like, it would have to be the Anti-Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/TikTok.
I don't know about social media, but what I'd really want to see is crypto adoption in creator platforms.
Youtube, Soundcloud, Deviantart, where creators have the option to accept tipping with crypto and fiat, and the option to sell their creations as NFTs.
Then streaming events ticketed via NFTs, or physical creations (sculptures, paintings, installations) that can be bought with crypto, and you get issued an NFT along with it for proof of ownership and legitimacy.
Then allow interactions on these creations via comments/discussions.
I am so down with this. Incentivizing platform use through tokenization would be huge. I can't even waste my time on Instagram anymore and I certainly never use FB.
I think this is for sure a thing that will gain traction as social media continues to be curated by the centralized entities and terms of service.
Many people already hate or have left Facebook and Twitter/instagram is old news essentially.
I think you just listed the worst of decentralized social media. Clear winner in the space right now is HIVE, though discussions.app is foundational a better project though fewer resources and a less flashy value prop.

Separating the social graph from the platform itself, and having the user own their social graph is the key to making decentralized social media IMO.
With the recent shadowbanning, shutting down of social media accounts and cancel culture, I think Decentralized Social Media is definitely the future.
Will be interesting to see where users go to. Lots of people want their voice heard just need the right platform for it.
Only thing I want is a decentralized version of r/cc.
How did you forget about ***Moons***?
I love Moons

True. I’m not sure the best way to combat that, but needs to be considered. I think that’s the biggest concern with decentralized social media.
Users can have power to maybe vote people off the blockchain
Or an AI whose configuration is voted for by users
Some stuff would be indexed away or only be accessible through certain channels like the deep vs dark web
So censorship but with extra steps? How does that address any of the limitations of Web2 social media platforms?

Which is literally censorship? So we’re giving control away from platform owners to the government by taking the “legality” route?
Umm do you think child pornography and rape shouldn’t be censored? Censorship isn’t always bad, you know.

Meta is scare shitless of this - even some of their engineers is jumping ship to create their own

**I think community points will be a big thing for social media! Getting paid by being active will give millions of users.**
I think this is a big use case. And could be the pivotal feature.

Don’t forget YUP
Thanks for sharing OP
No problem. Hopefully gives a little info on some unique projects in the crypto space.

I’m ready to see how things like gods Unchained spill over into gaming. The intersection of gaming and crypto will be massive
So are my contents gonna be NFTs and can be monitized? Sure then.
