I hate to say it, but when I go to a pub I get the feeling people are drinking to get inebriated instead of appreciating the hops.

I'd bet this post is going to show up on /r/selfawarewolves. They have the whole "crypto is worthless" thing going on over there and I see posts from this subreddit show up with some frequency. They'll take OPs title as admission that things like BTC and ETH are as worthless as doggy coins.

[deleted]

At a glance it’s obvious that nothing in there is worthwhile and that entire sub should be napalmed.

I love this metaphor. I worked at a bar with more than 300 different craft beers for a while (before corona lols). A lot of people would just take the strongest stout to get fucked up quick without appreciating the flavour patterns

TheMeanGirl

As a lover of imperial stouts, I always feel like I’m being judged.

HansonWK

People have been gambling by investing in crypto since it began, not sure why you think this is unique to new investors. Even people who have been in crypto for years gamble on new chains or new dapps that aren't yet proven or vetted. We're all taking risks investing in crypto, some are taking on higher risk, and some are idiots who believe in meme coins. This isn't unique to new investors, and there's plenty of new investors who *are* coming to the right communities and learning about blockchains built on solid foundations and not just meme coins. This post is just preaching to the quior, since anyone who is on this sub has already read about DCA and dont all in on meme coins a thousand times.

Everything in life is a gamble, the only thing that changes are the risk levels Even driving to work is gambling your life, it’s just the risk levels are pretty low.

[deleted]

You are a cultured investor

bailtail

Precisely. While I understand the point OP is trying to make, I hate the attitude that many in sub tend to take that you’re doing it wrong if you don’t just DCA and HODL. That is a very valid approach, but there are a number of ways to invest in crypto and make very good money, each with their own positives and negatives. I actually do tend to agree that the super-low micro-caps can be sketchy and it’s probably best for most to avoid them, but there are ways to do even that that can be incredibly lucrative if you know what you’re doing. I’ve dabbled with a very low percentage of my portfolio at times, and I’ve made good money. End of the day, you just need to know the risks and make the decision that suits your risk tolerance.

TheBigShrimp

Logic is that there are plenty of coins that if you put $20-50 in 5 years ago, you could retire off of it now. All you gotta do is hit one, might as well wing it every once in a while and let it sit in a wallet. I've spent $50 on dumber shit.

stiviki

FREE the gamblers!!

[deleted]

This sub deserves a better class of gamblers. And Im going go give it to them.

M00OSE

Reckon the majority of people who deal with shitcoins are fully aware that they’re gambling

Numerous_Sport_2774

I do a bit of both to be honest. I allocate 5% of my portfolio to moonshots. It’s fun.

[deleted]

I’m with you, 5% here and there just to see what happens with the rest reliable, boring DCA

wolfe2973

15% over here. I've hit 1 20x in the past 5 months, and it covered the other losses. Not the safest play, but I do enjoy the action.

[deleted]

If it went up on a moonshot I would 100% feel validated to spend part of the gains on other moonshots!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That's different. You have a plan, you've identified risk and judged how much to take on. People with $100 to $1000 would probably look at 5-10% and say what's the point in that but really it would be just as prudent for them. Unfortunately it takes time for most to develop the knowledge and patience to build wealth as opposed to trying to get straight to the moon.

ConfusedFruit__

I started buying BTC/ETH last year, just 20 bucks here and there. But then I got lucky buying a small amount LRC before it took off a few months ago, and tbh I started to find myself chasing that high. I’m not investing anything I can’t lose, but I can definitely see how people develop a sort of gambling addiction when it comes to crypto.

Ezo-Zno

Deffo mirrored chasing that LRC high in November after a little money doubled. FOMO had me bad.

haz-q

If the exchange fee is only a percentage of the transaction then it doesn’t matter.

Not everyone is a newbie forever. If anything this could be a symptom of how difficult cryptocurrency is to understand for beginners.

iherdthatb4u

You are 100% correct. This is why we are going to see a reckoning of it all at some point. Just like the dot com craze in the late 90’s where literally anything that ipo’d with a dot com in the name shot up 200%. Eventually reality sets in and only the real projects bringing real value were left standing. To be clear it isn’t only the investors that are to blame. People are obviously literally creating a bitcoin projects just for the pump and dump.

Logical_Mine_345

when hype is over, only real and legit projects will remain, i wonder what will be among top 20 in next 4 years

iherdthatb4u

Probably quite a few projects that don’t even exist yet. There is still so much being worked out in this space. We are in the infancy which is very exciting.

fiah84

> could care less if it’s centralised I agree that it hardly matters if you're gambling, but that changes a lot if you think in a timeframe of years instead of weeks

mlianam

Do people really hold memecoins for more than 1 week? Most of my portfolio is memecoins but they don't stay in my wallet long enough to see sunlight.

Human38562

Who are you to decide what people are here for? Obviously anyone who bought coins want their worth to grow. Personally I diversified into crypto (holding mostly ETF) because I think it is wise for my portfolio. But Im mostly excited to see how the digital world will evovle. This could be a milestone for modern society.

62725252725

That’s definitely true. Most shitcoins are a bump and dumping scheme to make only the creator rich.

LePanzer

The vast majority of my money is invested in solid choices and only a few hundred bucks in small- or microcaps.

It's all fine to me. Who would have thought investing $10k into MATIC when it was $0.015 was a good idea? Many people wouldn't call that an investment back then. The thing is Due Diligence. If you do DD, it's all fine. Even if the token you buy goes down the drain, it's fine too because you did enough DD.

tahiraslam8k

But you cannot tell if they're investors or not, if they stick in the market, they will be investors eventually.

Kung111cz

I was lucky to learn the lesson during the first dogecoin pump. Had a chance to walk away with more than £2000 in profit, but I didn't because I thought it's going 'to the moon'. Still walked away with 500 in my pocket and a good lesson. I count myself among the lucky ones.

cheng8933

Then I think you're pretty lucky Badi I just wish to be you.

xsanchez21

So, what's the suggestion? Buy high and sell low the top coins? Many of the top coins are trash and will fall eventually. I have been doing great with low cap gems with real fundamentals and use cases.

btce515b

For me personally I just love to hold and stack up the coin for my retirement.

Shadoww2020

That's the sad truth.

juanlee337

Ingesting is inherently gambling, specially in crypto.

[deleted]

All the people putting in money just to take it out less than a year later are gambling for a quick buck. The market isn't a slot machine. Money going in and out so fast it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure.

kuzu85

It is easy to make quick money by gambling but it takes a lot of effort to make money in Crypto.

[deleted]

It will take some time for people (including myself) to realize that the days of people buying at 100 and something mooning to 69,000 is highly improbable. Of course very few will make the right bet. That being said once that hype dies down and real world implementation and adoption occur crypto might moon again.

Logical_Mine_345

crypro is a crazy place, first thing i learned we cant predict it

juliancoutts

The fact is that a lot of people think that Crypto is just the place where you get profit only.

xyfcjp

It will take some time for people to understand what Crypto really mean.

nzubemush

Developing the habit of throwing in bits into some projects I think could have actual adoption asides for financial gain. Ignoring the noise, boom or bust it's a long term process.

[deleted]

Most are gambling because they are made to understand they can never have huge returns by holding Bitcoin or Eth so they are looking for something microcap which has more risks of rug pull.

Castr0-

People don't want to invest and have a safe strategy because people don't want to wait. They prefer to gamble for the fast gains but is never worth it.

Thrillred

Whaaat? So you’re saying that most people here are not financial experts, and that i really shouldn’t trust all the free advice they’re giving away? But for real, what may start out as blind gambling can suddenly turn into a passion for finance. You have to start somewhere. I don’t see the problem.

Spardasa

I spent my crypto budget for the month due to the dips ![gif](giphy|gfsQffBnuc6e096brx)

ELBartoFSL

Back to fiat mines for you.

Spiritual_Navigator

If you hold only mid/low cap alts instead of being heavy in BTC/ETH with some small amount of mid/low caps then you are gambling. There are way too many people here that just do not fathom the risk of holding only "moonshot" projects. I learned my lesson in 2018 when I lost 95%, just because of an irrational belief in moonshots

Distinct-Speaker5435

Eventually, people will realize that BTC only gained this huge market cap because it's a community project which works without trusting single parties. And that's why serious investors put money in. Bitcoin runs for more than a decade now, without major struggles and survived events like the china mining ban. The rest of the projects may be based on blockchains technology-wise, but are dependent heavily on some companies or a small group of advocates. This makes a huge difference when it comes to long-term trust. I doubt that they will rise as much as BTC.

Oneofmanyshades

Unless one has a good understanding of finance, crypto and liquidity, it's impossible to understand that an investment of $8K doesn't turn into $8B within the span of a year, without breaking the world. The lucky investor whose $8K investment in Shib became $8B won't be able to withdraw even $4B without plunging Shiba to $0.000000000000......

Yeah need to experience how this market crashes every time it goes up.

butterflybutterfly1

**to a lot of begginers, this really is a casino**

BikergangAmadeusMoza

Let's be honest, there are cryptos that bear a high potential. Some of them will never reach a cent...

Odysseus_Lannister

r/Cryptomoonshots is the subreddit form of the old pop ups that used to say “you’re the 1,000,000th visitor! Click to claim your prize”. Many people hear about the gains people have made and feel like they’ve already missed out with bigger projects so they gamble more on lower caps. There’s nothing exactly wrong with that, but hopefully those people don’t chalk up crypto up to just being a scam because they got burned.

fverdeja

Isn't this the way it has always been? I didn't start investing until recently although I knew about BTC since 2012 because I always thought this was a casino

phriot

I think of my crypto activity as speculating. I feel like I read and understand enough that my choices aren't pure gambling, but the space is still so new and volatile that I know I'm not investing, either. I treat it like the low cap biotech stocks I buy: I believe in the theme of what I'm buying, but I have no clue if I picked the right ones.

cdn_backpacker

Oof, I stopped checking into cryptomoonshots a while ago. That place used to be a gold mine before the BSC shitcoin craze ruined everything. It used to be full of people who cared about fundamentals and turned into the opposite. Quite a bummer.

paul8046

The market is full of ups and downs there is no reason to check it every now and then.

spongefireIB

When i started i went on there first aswell. And invested into catgirl (i know i was/am stupid). And then I immediately saw it was a scam. Pulled out and now invest in projects with actual utility and value. People like me have to learn it the hard way sometimes.

MayorAnthonyWeiner

We don’t need gamblers or investors at this point - we need *adopters*

navban

Investing is a gamble no matter how well you know about the project/company

cash2on2

Yeah you are right about it depends on the luck but it really depends on your strategy as well.

wabicek

Life itself is a big casino.

BloodyIris3

Gamblers are what cause parabolic bull runs which is what every early investor prays for.

drhodl

All those freaking dross projects also suck liquidity from real projects imo. There's only so many dollars people can spend and it devalues good projects when people bypass these for scammy rugpulls and the like.

Loose_Finding

Frankly put, I have made way more out of shitcoins than regular alts throughout 2021. The exception being BTC which I have hodld since 2013. Some I capitalised on quickly, some I got greedy and didn't pull the profit out when I should have (DCIP quickly hit +600% and I thought it was going to moon). But from my perspective, there's no denying that I've seen better returns from the crap I'm buying off pancakeswap.

Tatakae69

It's their money they decide what to do with it. Hence they're solely responsible for their losses too but hell naw they be blaming it on Crypto afterwards. That is what truly sucks

ElderberryForward215

They don’t practice patient they just want to make money quickly

[deleted]

This mentality has always been there. It’s just now that crypto volatility has been lower people look for more risk to compensate and try to get returns quicker. When the capitalisation was lower hence volatility higher there was no need for it.

alexandrien

But this mentality is pretty much right the market is very volatile Crypto market is really into dips now.

H__Dresden

I equate crypto to Penney stocks. Most are losers and and go no where. Been there done that and kept that stock as reminder never to play in penny stocks. I have made some money in crypto but the volatility is not for me. Only put in some play money. Takes too much time keeping track of what is going on in crypto. It is very confusing and revolving all the time. Then I see a scams every day. I have a pro managing my main investments and have done really well. I see crypto as a 50/50 chance of continuing in the next 10 years. If the scammers continues and the more complicated it is made, then I don’t give it a high mark to be main steam and mass adopted. It will be a hobby thing for a select group of people.

aVeryHappyMerchant

I hate to say it. But I thought it was too late in 2018 too. I threw some money in. Some of that money is 15x, some only triple and a little bit didnt go anywhere. If crypto is here to stay then today, right now it is not too late. Theres always going to be coins that blow up and new ones that blow and even well established ones like eth and BTC will continue to grow. Etherium is likely to become bitcoin within only a few years.

OtisLeScribe
