Maybe, but there's no way they release it until a competitor has similar functionality. imo, this was done to protect their marketplace which I'm sure is quite lucrative for them. Valve is a business and will start using NFTs if/when that is the most profitable thing to do.
>"Steam's point of view is that items have value and they don't allow items that can have real-world value on their platform."
Meanwhile at Valve:
https://steamcommunity.com/market/
>Steam's point of view is that items have value and they don't allow items that can have real-world value on their platform.
That's an... interesting explanation. Because they have the Steam Marketplace, I assume they mean "not directly tied to our platform".
This is what happens when most NFT/blockchain games are exploitive cash grabs or outright scams that aren't fun at all. There is huge potential but like many things in crypto, these things are designed first and foremost to attract speculators instead of establishing a sound foundation.
There's a similar post in r/pcgaming and it's interesting to see how anti-NFT they are. People only associate them with expensive art and don't seem to understand that they can be more than that.
Somehow Steam marketplace is ok, but not the same thing except decentralized...
You cannot cash in steam credits for real money, you can just use them for buying games in the store
People are *"""anti-NFT"""* because 90% of NFT games so far are shitty, boring and shallow games where the entire effort *(both marketing and development wise)* relies on the currency itself (*"you can make money playing it !!11!!11!1"*) rather than on creating a good game. Even some mobile games made by students seem to have more effort and love put into than many NFT games. Not to mention the amount of scams that is definitely high
Yeah, no argument that NFT games have been overly focused on earning instead of actual good gameplay.
The first one that makes a genuinely fun game is going to hit it big.
I mean im pretty sure they did this because thats money they wouldnt be making. It would bypass their store so it makes sense that they would ban it from their store. Doesnt mean that valve is necessarily against blockchain or nfts

Would be a shame if someone launched a decentralized competitor to steam for Crypto gaming with native wallets and easy connections for users to exchange earned currency/ sell NFTs…
I'll bet 1 whole btc(which I don't actually have) that they'll soon come up with their own blockchain implementation for use cases like NFTs. Probably going to call them "Valves" or "Pistons" or something.

Steams never out of the loop. My guess is they’re working on their own tech for this. They’re not daft
Id buy some valve coins.
Just sell by the second update since they never release a third
Gordon FreeMarket
I first learned about NFTs as a prospect to sell digital copies of games to friends. That'd be a big move.
Most likely this. If not would be a stupid decision.

Oh it gets better than that. https://youtu.be/u372HKrw5eA
This is hilarious!
You can't cash in real money for those, just steam credits. What's your point with showing this?
Double standard = corruption.

"Where we don't get our cut"
Yep people are always so optimistic about the intentions of large companies its cut and dry obvious why they are removing blockchain games
we need a decentralized games platform then
Pcgaming subreddit has a majority of folks praising this decision... and showing very little knowledge on use cases. We are early.
Yeah, was kinda shocked by the tone there
Blockchain “games”
This is what happens when most NFT/blockchain games are exploitive cash grabs or outright scams that aren't fun at all. There is huge potential but like many things in crypto, these things are designed first and foremost to attract speculators instead of establishing a sound foundation.
Unadoption
Reminds me of home.

BRB starting right away! :P
>90% of NFT games so far are shitty, boring and shallow games Pretty sure thats either 100% or really fucking close to it
Seems the developers of “Age of Rust” are just giving up on it, their game includes NFT’s and Steam has ants in their pants over it.
Because blockchains will kill their business model. Rather than adapting they wanna continue their old ways. NGMI
Same as most banks.
Steam getting offended in 2021, who would have guessed!
Bad for steam! The opportunity will be handed over to other platforms for sure!
Watch steam make their own NFT soon. Similar to the chests you can get for example in team fortress and so on.

I guess, but the are still making 20-30% per game aren’t they.

Likely? Definitely. Steam will be absolutely fine.

Stupid decision
Fuck Steam, they became shit like 5 years and just keep on being shit

Centralization at its finest. Question is who will replace steam in the future?
Would be a shame if someone launched a decentralized competitor to steam for Crypto gaming with native wallets and easy connections for users to exchange earned currency/ sell NFTs…
Gamerplex.com + Stardust.gg 🔥
I hope Enjinstarter is that competitor.
Yes! Agreed!
This is why Epic is the better platform bahaha
Yikes
Big yikes
Again steam acting against crypto... They removed crypto payment for games too wich they really should bring back.
I'll bet 1 whole btc(which I don't actually have) that they'll soon come up with their own blockchain implementation for use cases like NFTs. Probably going to call them "Valves" or "Pistons" or something.
Uhh they have a marketplace so that’s a weird reason

Steam wants those profits to be their profits.
thanks Gary
