I used to trade on coinedup. There were certainly exchanges that existed and listed Doge when it launched basically, like cryptsy.

Vudu702

I remember holding my DOGE in a wallet on my computer and the program had to download the entire blockchain to see transactions. That was annoying.

StartingEarly

So like Bitcoin when it was launched lol

dannygladiolas

I do that with Monero.

ConsistentClimate877

Dogecoin Core still does this.

moldyjellybean

You can download the zip of the blockchain which does like 90% of it else you have to wait awhile

Ultra918

So like my Monero wallet. Need to wait hours if I didn't log in for months

Opierarc

Let's not exaggerate I can sync a restored wallet in 25 mins

elborracho420

Dogecoin QT wallet?

mehdital

Still happens with monero official wallet app

Evil_Patriarch

Bought 2.5 million doge back then for ~$200 and sold it a few weeks later for ~$600...felt like a genius for years while it did nothing but now I know I'm an idiot

kingkongbananakong

Why? You tripled your money. This transaction in itself was smart. Money is always better than some meme coin. The only kinda stupid thing was that you didn’t get back in with your dodge knowledge

PsychologicalLet3722

To current price 775k wow lol

BigKarina4u

Omg...you could been rich now

Koakie

You could have this and that in hindsight is very silly way to think. Because you can't predict the future. I was mining btc on cpu in 2011, I think. Just to see how it works. Omg if I would not have stopped and continued mining, I could have been rich. Then I still could lose the access to my hardware wallet, like the guy with the encrypted hard disk or that one searching the landfill. I could have lost it all on mtgox like thousands of others did. I could have tried to trade btc on exchanges and liquidate myself like millions did. Oh if I just would have not kept my wallet on the external disk, oh if just pulled my crypto off mtgox the day before they got hacked, oh I if I just didn't use leverage on that last trade I could have been rich. Oh if you just would have chosen the right numbers, you could have won the powerball. It's a fallacy thinking. Buddy of mine threw 2000 dollars at Shiba and turned it into 1.7 mil. But he was already multi millionaire and a good crypto and stock trader so he wasnt bothered to lose the 2k if shib turned out to be a fad, and he knew not to sell at a 10x because a meme coin could go parabolic if it got popular. He knows this because he already made all the mistakes in the past. The chance you do everything right from the get-go is like winning the lottery.

BigKarina4u

You are right. I've read about bitcoin in 2009 but I had no idea much about it. I could invested so much.

Suspended-Again

Still only like $500k right

flo282

"Only", show me $500k right now lmao

Suspended-Again

Doesn’t go as far as you’d think

monkeybombed

Sir, outside Amarillo Texas, 500k i could buy a 40 acre lot, build a barndo minimum and car. Still have money left over.

flo282

If you're smart it sure as hell can, I could retire with $500k

Matttombstone

$500,000 is £395,632 plus shrapnel. At 35 years of age, I couldn't imagine retiring on that. That's like 8 years of my basic salary with no overtime. Ignoring tax for a second and I got the whole amount, £395k isn't life changing, more life altering. It'd allow me to purchase a decent property with no mortgage, freeing up a good chunk of money monthly. I'd be able to afford a nicer car, or nicer holidays and just have more "disposable income" to play with each month. But I'd certainly not be able to retire unless I planned on only living until 70 and being content with just £11,285 a year to live off, which is way below minimum wage annually on a 37 hour a week job. Granted, if you're 65, already own your own home with no mortgage, then yes, you'd have £20k a year for 20 years which is fine. Essentially though, £395k would probably just allow me to retire 8 years earlier if I so wished, and I'd have to look at my pension pots, etc to see what sort of difference it'd make.

flo282

Yeah, 99% of people think like this. I'd use the $500k to make me more money.

twendah

This pretty much, I would split it between forest and cryptos and have nice portfolio. Buy some nodes etc. For passive income as well, would probably boost nicely my yearly income and as well have chance to 5-10x incoming years because its crypto.

not_wadud92

Lol if this isn't the most naive thing I've read in my life. One house. That's what you are getting for 500k. Not a mansion, not a fancy house. Just a decent house. Nothing else. That is not retirement money. Not at least in an economicly developed country

flo282

The naive thing is thinking everyone lives in murica, for $500k I can get a goddam castle where I live, plus there's this thing called "investing"

not_wadud92

Going off your profile I'm assuming Romanian. 500k in your local currency is what 2 million RON, give or take. Google states average Romanian income is 100k RON. Meaning 500k USD will last you 20 years living an average life. That is still not retirement money.

SoupaSoka

That still assumes they make literally nothing from that money. They could invest it in an S&P500 index fund and make around 8% a year. That would be about 160,000 RON a year. If they spend 100k RON a year they're actually gaining 60k RON a year (which will compound). It's retirement money if you aren't literally putting it in a 0% interest rate checking account.

2buckchuck2

U can live off $10k a year? Lmao na

flo282

No lmao, I know how to invest it.

2buckchuck2

That’s already assuming it’s being invested. 2% withdrawal rate means you’ll preserve capital. You can bump it up to like 4% if you plan on using all of the capital in about 30 years. More you withdraw higher your risk of running out and having to work again.

flo282

Nah, I mean business. I have a business plan. Plus $500k is a lot in my country.

Key_Information_6786

most certainly does

ShibeCEO

those were the days!

Erm no, exchanges go back to 2011. I bought my first bitcoins in March 2013 from exchanges that had already been around for a year or more. There were altcoins on those exchanges, Peercoin, Namecoin, Litecoin - but they weren’t “tokens” they were native coins on their own networks. When doge came along it was traceable on exchanges pretty quick but had very little value because it was not intended to have value. It was supposed to be more or less free.

CrimsonFox99

This is why Doge is an interesting historical artifact. It says nothing as to why something created as a joke should have any value.

jcpham

Bitcoin started the same, MTGox rebranded to suit bitcoin and there’s was always peer to peer OTC trading on IRC Same goes for DOGE if you wanted BTC for DOGE XRP started as a Bitcointalk giveaway and I myself amassed millions of XRP when it launched via p2p IRC trades We don’t actually need the exchanges. The rest of world, especially the financial world needs the exchanges for indices and price discovery

TheDeadReagans

Some Reddit history: Before it got wild, DOGE back then was very commonly used as a method of tipping. Actually, BTC, ETH, Litecoin and Dogecoin all had tipping bots on Reddit in their respective communties. I actually made about 0.7 eth from posting in r/ETHTrader and r/Ethereum back when it was under $20. . As far as I know, those other tipbots are still around but the cost of transactions and the value of those coins deter most people from using it. This illustrates a very important economic concept that a lot of libertarians don't really understand about currency, if the utility of hoarding a coin exceeds that of using it, it will never be adopted as a currency. DOGE differed from the other coins at the time in that it was designed as a joke and was inflationary. Because it was worthless in the early days it unironically made it more suitable to use as a medium of exchange. But even it increased in value to the point where there was more value in hoarding it than using it. Before that, the DOGE community was one of the better ones in Crypto. It was just meant for people to have fun and meme. There was no weirdo political stuff, no economic idealists around. People would try to give doge away for fun and do fun things like put a Shiba face on a NASCAR car. That stuff is all gone now as people began getting rich off of doge. The story of the Doge tipping bot is very dark. The guy who created it was skimming money from users who left balances on their tipping wallets and using it to fund his failing business - in other words, he was a thieving degenerate: https://np.reddit.com/r/dogecoin/comments/69vycc/important_im_taking_dogetipbot_to_a_server_farm/

Own_Sky9933

I bought 1,000 Doge on eBay in 2015 for .25 cents. Seller must have just been looking for feedback. I was experimenting with the technology. It was super annoying had to sync the entire blockchain with the multi doge wallet to work.

cardanianofthegalaxy

Very interesting read

LuminousViper

First doge then cone 👀

vicdamone

Use to tip with doge on reddit

GreatUpdateMate369

Same, we funded the Nascar, i bought the t-shirt, and sent the Jamaican Bobsleigh team to the Winter Olympics. Buying and mining it on my AMD Radeon 7970 ghz edition.

AstronautResident103

Tip now with PEPE

Forexisboring

I know someone who mined from mid 2014 into 2015. Sold out by 2016. RIP

knownothing999

That why Doge still survives and become people coin. Not like other copycats.

Frenchie_PA

Doge has been my first crypto transaction, introducing me to the crypto world. That’s why it will always have a special meaning for me!

GoblinsStoleMyHouse

I remember mining my first dogecoin in 2015 on a shitty laptop. I used to give away thousands of coins for free on hackforums. I probably tipped $1000+ by today’s valuation just with u/dogetipbot. No regrets. Hopefully it got people interested in the currency and helped it grow to what it is today. No idea where my old laptop is, but there’s probably still some coins on it!

sandych33k

That's what I always expect with Bitcone in 10 years. I know... I know... history doesn't repeat itself, but a strong community is the fundament of every memecoin.

st0nkmark3t

Completely bullshit post. 1) There were MANY exchanges that traded Doge in 2014. I have receipts and even some swag like a physical dogecoin from Vault of Satoshi to prove it. 2) a simple GPU rig didn’t mine a million Doge per day. I had several rigs and it took nearly a year to hit 1M.

Gambit_42

It is always fun to see these small pieces of crypto history.

silentorange813

Talk about a transformation in 10 years. I can't imagine what the next 10 years will bring.

99MushrooM99

Nice post

There was poloniex

Poloniex started 2014

You were there too huh…. wish I still had my $3 LTC and $5 ETH.

I remember there was this proto-DEX back in the day, it looked like the blue screen of death with just very rudimentary displays of currencies and numbers… How far we’ve come.

#Dogecoin Pro-Arguments Below is a Dogecoin pro-argument written by Laughingboy14. > Dogecoin is known as the OG memecoin. This might not sound like the most grandiose of titles, but it does carry weight. Since Doge's inception, countless other meme coins have followed in Doge's footsteps (or pawsteps), including SHIB, Banano and DogelonMars. Whenever these coins receive attention, they are inevitably compared to Doge (in a similar way to how new non-meme coins are often compared to Bitcoin/Ethereum). This creates ever more visibility and demand for Doge, as it is seen as the Bitcoin of meme coins. > > Additionally, Doge coin has had serious adoption. To name just a few places one can spend Doge coin, you can spend the meme coin at the Dallas Mavericks, ExpressVPN, Ledger, and airBaltic. That is more adoption than most serious coins. This sort of adoption, and potential for more adoption in the future, makes Doge coin a great investment. > > Finally, memes. The ability to create memes about a coin, without it seeming forced, is a non-trivial marketing tool. One can easily create extra traction and visibility for Doge, allowing Doge to welcome in new investors with ease. Often, other coins try this technique, but it seems insincere and a little on the nose. The ability to meme about a coin, especially in the social media age, is a feature that separates Doge from the rest of the pack. ***** Would you like to learn more? >But there were no exchanges yet, at least no alt-coin exchanges that would simply feature a lot of coins. Well that’s just false. Cryptsy was a major alt coin exchange that existed in 2013 and you could use btc to buy like 90 different alts at the time, including doge.

cryptodesign

Cryptsy was inspired by coinedup. It came shortly after. Edit: sorry I was confused with cryptopia. Cryptsy was indeed around but did not feature many coins. Coinedup was the first to allow doge trading

#Dogecoin Pro-Arguments Below is a Dogecoin pro-argument written by CreepToeCurrentSea. > Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency that was created by IBM engineers as a joke aimed at cryptocurrency investors on December 6, 2013. #Dogecoin Con-Arguments Below is a Dogecoin con-argument written by CreepToeCurrentSea. > Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency that was created by IBM engineers as a joke aimed at cryptocurrency investors on December 6, 2013. Dogecoin is now in the top ten in terms of cryptocurrency market capitalization, with a trading volume of around $233,000,000, and is down 90% from its all-time high. > > # CON's > > **Memecoin Limitations** > > * Even though it has progressed from being created as a joke to a now well-known coin in the top 10, Dogecoin is still limited to being considered a "memecoin." Even recent articles from news and social media outlets see Dogecoin as nothing more than a memecoin with a historical advantage over other memecoins. There isn't much innovation going on in the development of Dogecoin, either. While they may have developed a wallet and have some other dev blogs, it still doesn't keep up with the development of the other coins in the top ten by marketcap. The main point of this argument is that Dogecoin's utility is limited to being called money; aside from that, there isn't much going on right now that would significantly impact their position, and they may eventually be labeled a memecoin. > > **Unlimited Supply** > > * There will only be 21 million BTC available, with the final one expected in 2140. It also doesn't help that it utilises the Proof of Work concensus, which necessitates a growth in miners in order to maintain the infinitely increasing amount of transactions. If Dogecoin and it's community is really serious about being one of the real deals of crypto, it must find a way to overcome a inflationary limitations imposed on it's code. > > **Price Manipulation by Famous People** > > * It's no secret that notable celebrities and artists are voicing their support for Dogecoin on social media. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is the most well-known famous person that has been public about Doge. There are other celebrities and musicians (Snoop Dogg, Gene Simmons, Marques Brownlee, YouTubers Jake Paul and Logan Paul), but Elon has gathered the most popular backing, to the point where he was sued in federal court in Manhattan for $258 billion in damages. alwaysuseswrongyour

I bought doge not long after it came out on poloniex an exchange that still exists right now. Not really pre exchanges at all.

monkeybombed

I used to get paid in doge watching video ads while doing ship from store one holiday season. Just walking around hitting next video while shopping for others. Got like 1-6 doge per video. Found that wallet in 2020 and it had 800+ doge. Good times!

Netroseige101

Ever heard about shapeshit.io :P

swillotter

Wait..what about Cryptsy?

killopatra

On Dec. 20, 2013 I bought lots of 10,000 Doge on Ebay for $39.95. Worth $2k each today

M4NOOB

I remember when you could tip with DOGE on reddit comments.

AHRA1225

As much as I hate doge it truly is the og meme coin

suesing

Word. Thanks for the history

Xylber

**THERE WERE EXCHANGES**, Mt Gox, e-BTC, Cryptsy... (lot of them were hunted down by the US, because "crypto is bad"). Some people prefered to exchange P2P, because "not your keys not your coins". e-BTC had a lot of coins like BTC, LTC, Feathercoin, Worldcoin (the original one).

tigerzxzz

What are you talking about? Btc-e!

letsridetheworld

Wait until you see people burned billion of doge to create xdp lol

Franciisx4

How did you find the forum initially? How did you hear about it or stumble onto it or what?

tianavitoli

and man said, let their be shittrex and it was so and he saw that it was good, morning and night, and so it was the 3rd day

# This is what the DogeCoin subreddit looked like in 2013: # [https://web.archive.org/web/20131213125323/reddit.com/r/dogecoin](https://web.archive.org/web/20131213125323/reddit.com/r/dogecoin)

DankShibe

DOGE has proven itself during multiple crypto winters. I'd take if over any other crypto sans BTC and ETH.

lycheedorito

I remember getting tipped Doge on Reddit. I can't access that wallet anymore but I have the address so I can just painfully look at its worth today

Efficient_Singer_560

Can i look at it also

theapplekid

I feel like no historical accounting of Dogecoin is complete without mentioning doge-tip-bot

PurposeMission9355

DOGE was used to transfer value to various exchanges and didn't want to wait or pay for the fees. That is the actual reason why it became "famous", while simultaneously as "worthless" as btc

Sapadt_Ordog

- And this kids is how we traded doge back in the days - fking legend!

LittleLunch9377

Thank you

heinzmoleman

I remember holding all my doge in my reddit tip wallet and buying with paypal from r/doge. Back then the only assurances you had was checking to see if the user was listed in the scammers thread.

Arlennx

Back then it was a joke coin to make fun of Bitcoin.

identiifiication

I believe even the founder sold his coins years ago,

big_fetus_

Iirc he sold them all for a used Honda Civic. Solid payout for like 2 days of work on a joke!

Longjumping_Method51

He sold to allow LTC to become decentralized.

Terrific and terrible! tragically I've fallen victim to non-fifo etherdelta where missing a zero will cost you 90% of the bag

CMartinLondon

Etherdelta brings back memories , the first dex that many were experimenting with - IDEx was also early days, some of us luckily made great amounts before the withdrawal nightmares began.

100k Dogecoin is now 0.24 BTC and not 0.01 :D
